This is really the third thread in this series...the first one was called "Bangladesh - Tourism"...then Tmac decided to call the second one "Beautiful Bangladesh"...after an advertising campaign, I think.

As Amar suggests, you could post questions in the Philippines sub-forum. They may be privy to some (their) "desi" information that I'm not aware of.

I haven't been to Mount Mayon or the Chocolate Hills. My father-in-law retired from ADB before I had the opportunity to visit those places. The usual places of interest are: Baguio, Boracay Island (my personal favorite), Clark (former US air base), Cebu, Corregidor Island, Pagsanjan Falls, Puerto Galera, Subic Bay (former US naval base), Tagaytay.

Manila is a very large city known as Metro Manila that actually is comprised of many municipalities (cities). The most expensive gated communities are in Makati City, which is also the business/commercial capital of the country and is part of Metro Manila. Manila is probably comparable to Mumbai in that the city is of extremes, super rich neighborhoods on one spectrum with shanty towns on the other. The metro area is like any western (American) city.

If you pm me with your contact information I could probably hook you up with some people over there, who could probably take you around or at least provide tips on the ground. When are you planning to visit?

Waterfalls in Shitakunda Eco Park. The one in the upper left, I had not seen before. The one lower right, is the more commonly photographed main falls. However, peak flow with three parallel falls, which probably occurs only during or after the rainy season, is less seldom photographed. Not sure that I could ever rationally afford that particular convertible, but I don't put it past me to buy a convertible some day. I have a liking for classic cars...and could see myself checking out an oldie drop top later in life.

Awesome, please repost the pic if you like then, since I cannot undelete it myself. We had some trouble with a photographer in the past, who did not want his pictures here, so I try to be careful of what we post here.

Don't want to stray too off topic but I have read that the spongy bulb of 'kochuripana' harbors all sorts of bacteria as well including dysentery. So may not be a good idea as it exists in waterlogged areas. My link above has some pointers.

Additionally, it contributes to water stagnation and thus to mosquito growth. Very hard to get rid off once in a given water body. When I was younger my dad told me a story that it was introduced to our waters because of a British mem-sahib who thought it looked pretty. I think that's just an old-wives'-tale, but they can look nice if blooming all at once as in the pic.

I don't remember exactly, if I find out I'll let you know.

Looks like there's no permit/license needed for riverine boat piloting or use -- I think it's high time whoever got on the rivers needed a permit and got some kind of training. Basic training would be fine and you could get the NGO's to do the training cheap...

What this would do is let the slow boats stick to certain areas of the river and not cause hazards to the large passenger boats.

I checked and the only description the author gives is, "Stone Collecting Boats." The place that particular activity brings to mind is the Sylhet / India border (ie Jafflong etc) but I can't really tell from the shot.

They are about 20 mi from the border at Tetulia, so not hard to see on a clear day. A pic similar to the one above was posted before...in the old Beautiful Bangladesh thread, I think.

Yep...if it were just up to me, I'd settle in a mountain place myself. Here is a similar view from Panchagahr district of Bangladesh, looking out towards the Himalayas. This picture was posted previously in one of the precursor threads to this one.

I once took a drive from the mile high city (Denver) on I-70 West through the Rockies. My ears started to pop as I was driving up the mountain. It is beautiful and sometimes a bit scary. The mountain and snow are all around you and breathtaking breathtaking. The occasional road side ditch can be 1000s of foot deep!

Bangladesh is mostly flat delta but there are some hilly areas. The country is divided into 64 districts of roughly equal size. Of these, three have relatively high hills, another 6 or so have a decent number of low hills, plus maybe as many as 6 others have a few scattered low hills.

I was shocked to realize too but we do have a Briddhasrom (around 400 people)in Gazipur and there are quite a few people from the upper social class residing there- I met a man who used to be an officer in the British Army and his daughter is currently living in London! Really sad place. We were sent there from our college for community service.

From what I learned I figured out arguments with daughter/son in law was the most common reason for people ending up there, especially true for those who lived with their children.

This is a picture of Baklai Falls, the tallest waterfall of Bangladesh. Until recently, I had seen just one picture of this falls, and also didn't know its name. Now I have found a bunch more pics...which are higher res than this one by zrkhans, but which also need to be resized before I post them here. This I will do in a few weeks, as work will keep me busy till then...

Not 100% sure...but Banglapedia mentions a waterfall on a tributary of Lulaingkhal of height 107 m...and I would bet that they are referring to Baklai. Maybe not tall in a global context, but certainly not bad for a flat deltaic country.

I believe it's in the army administered area of Bandarban that is off-limits to the general public. The first picture I saw of the falls was a couple of years ago. I wrote to the guy who took that picture and he said that he took the shot from an army chopper. More recently I found some pictures shot from the ground by this trekking club...I don't know if they had permission from the army or if the area can now be accessed on foot by the public. When I have a little more time I will try to find those pictures and resize them for posting here. I think its a mixed blessing that most of the falls in Bangladesh are in more remote or restricted areas. On one hand, this makes it more difficult for someone to get there. On the other hand, it prevents all these natural attractions from becoming a bazar, for instance as has happened to Shuvolong Falls in Rangamati in the past few years.

I am going to be gradually posting a series of Bandarban photos by D-way Expeditors. This set will include the Baklai photos promised earlier. One to start with:

Is Baklai fall is on the way to Nilgiri-Thanchi road? An army personnel told me that there is a nice fall about 750 ft down from Nilgiri. There is also a nice 'Chori' on the way to Thanchi, it's about 1.5 KM inside from the road.

Btw, Does anyone has any pics of 'Nafakum'? it's one of the most dangerous n remotest place in Bandarban. But the fall is beautiful. I saw pics of the fall in Facebook.

I don't know exactly where it is, however, any district of Bangladesh is in reality a pretty small area, so we're never talking more than a few miles in one direction or another. However, there's no way any fall in Bangladesh is 750ft. 350 ft was indirectly mentioned in a Banglapedia article, and from the pictures above, that seems fairly accurate.

Aashiq, please remove the two images from Ahmed Sharif. As you may notice, Mr Sharif has a big "copyright" posted over his photographs. He is very particular about this, and was very angry when his photographs were posted here in the past. You are very welcome to post pictures here, but not those that have copyright written or indicated on them...without first getting permission of the photographer. With other photographs...we should always credit the photographer anyway...though usually few abide by that rule.

Take the road toward Cox's Bazaar from Chittagong, pass through town of Patiya and hang a left at Satkaniya toward Bandarban. Go for about 55~60 km and there you are. Wintertime is the best time as usual and not the rainy season. Roasted cashew nuts and Pineapples are the local produce.

These aren't clouds. In coastal areas you get a foggy marine layer in the mornings that evaporates with afternoon heat.

A waterfall I had not seen picture of before...Hummum Fall in Srimongol. Probably not as frequented by tourists as Madhabkunda due to a more demanding trail.

You can stay a few nights -- but underlying tension is still moderately high between Bengali settlers and local tribal people, so I'd exercise caution. Bandarban does have a Cantonment.

Electricity is available in Bandarban town -- though the area where the images are from (a few miles away) may depend exclusively on a generator.
