Thats my kind of muslims, who live by their religions peacefully, as its meant to.

that#s damn right. No violence between people of different religion (Buddhist, Shaminaism, Muslim, Christians) are repoirted throughout the country, same applies to the different ehtnicities living in Mongolia: Mongols, Kazakhs, Tuvins, Burjats and lots of other little minorities.

Time to introduce another aimag: today it's time for Tov aimag. Tov - meaning "central" or "middle" is sort of "Mongolia light" or "Mongolia for beginners". It's not Kraftwerk but Scooter, not a mysterious underground bar but an ordinary Mc Donalds outlet. With 74.000 square kilometres it has about the size of Bavaria or slightly smaller than the Czech Republic.
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/b%20o/tov/Map_mn_tuv_aimag.png
The national capital Ulan Bator is located roughly at its center, but the city itself is administrated as an independent municipality. The Aimag includes the western part of the Khentii Mountains,
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/b%20o/tov/12185291.jpg
the mountains around the capital,
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/b%20o/tov/3173743234_b937ed2168_b.jpg
as well as rolling steppe in the south and west

Despite encircling the 1-million-inhabitants capital, the province is as empty as every other province with only 90.000 people living within the province borders, which equals about 8% of Ulaanbaatars population!
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/b%20o/tov/3908688775_d18acee5e6_o.png

The most interesting body of water is the Tuul River, which crosses Ulan Bator and later joins the Orkhon watering Lake Baikal.

The Töv aimag is populated primarily by Khalkh Mongols. Given its location, infrastructure is among the best in Mongolia, with paved roads, railway lines, tourist facilities, some industry and of course mining

Why "Mongolian mainstream"? Because it is easily accessible for touristss in a rush, quite tamed because of its well developed facilities and it is not one of the most spectacular Mongolian aimags although it boasts some attractive sights as the ruins of Manchur monastery
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/b%20o/tov/8803621.jpg

The monastery is located only 30km away from Ulaanbaatar on the other other side of the city's Bogd Khan mountain. It can easily be visited within a half day trip. Aimag capital Zuunmod (nothing worth to write home about) is located just north of the monastery.
Like most Mongolian monastery it became victim of the Stalinies purges in 1937/38

50km east of Ulaanbaatar, the Gorkhi-Terelj Park covers a part of the Khentii Mountains. It is most well known for its spectacular rock formations, including a rock that looks like a giant turtle from the right perspective. The landscape has an alpine character, with larch and pine forests, sparkling mountain rivers, and very diverse flora and fauna.

"Montana of Mongolia?" a visitor might ask himself. Well, some parts of the NP actuaaly remind of the US-America's Marlboro country scenery.
And this might be the reason why former East German filmmakers used Terelj as a setting for former Wild West movies.

nice pics! thanks for sharing. I wonder how long it gonna take for Mongolia capital Ulan Bator to look like cities of it Asian neighbor like China Korea Japan? anyway Mongolia is a Amazing country and i have a lot of respect for the Mongolian people.

I doubt UB will ever look like Chinese and Japanese cities, since its culture is very different from its southern nieghbours. The capital might be the most "European" in Asia and this is not only due to its Soviet architecture.

Changes. Skyline in 2005:

2009:

Back in 1999 the city looked much more empty and "soviet" than on the 1st picture, e.g. there were no coloured buildings at all on the other side of the river in the center of the photograph.

WOW. I spent half my morning looking through this whole thread; not only have I properly seen Mongolia for the first time, but you have really given me an education on the country, it's culture and it's history. Thank you! This place looks amazing, surreal, beautiful and out-of-this-world; I'd love to visit one day!:D

These pictures tell that UB is not a nice city and some remote areas are still untouched by the economical boom.
But the construction and the traffic jams tell you that something is going on in the country. When major mining projects are on the way, per capita income is expected to grow to Taiwan or South Korea levels. Hope that the fovernment can utilize these benefits.

200 reindeer people (Dukha) still live as nomads in this totally remote and isolated area. So far, these people almost completely live on their animals, their diet mainly conists of reindeer dairy products and ocasionally some meat during winter.
Their dwellings are quite similar to the North American tipies.

One of the very few anicent buildings (possibly from the 1910s or 20s) which survived Soviet urban city planning.

Ulaanbaatar was founded in 1639 but merely consisted of some yurts then which moved around under the command of the Khan.

It was not until 1778 that the city finally settled in a permanent location. The first buildings erected were monastery for worshipping the newly introduced Lamaist religion.

Ulaanbaatar was a disorderly collection of yurts and some monastery untiul it grew into a trading post in the 19th century accomodating Russian and Chinese salesmen in two different districts. While the Russians lived in typical wooden dwellings, the Chinese preferred buildings made of claim. The building shown on the pciture is one of the few pictures of this Russian heritage.

The citys outlook did not change too much until the Soviets began to modernize the rather chaotic city in the 1940s.

A nomadic society does not erect permanent structures. This is the reason why few traces of the past can be found thoughout the country although the Mongols have exported history three times (Huns, Turks, Genghis Khan) and shaped the global environment,
One feature which can nevertheless be discovered especially in the countrys west are Turkic memorial structures from the medieval Kitan period (7th to 11th century).

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/random/6.jpg

From http://mongolianaltai.uoregon.edu/arch_turkic_mem.phpTurkic memorial structures include squared enclosures that are often accompanied by image stones, false image stones, or balbal. There is every indication that these structures were commemorative in function. Within the Mongolian Altai, they are not typically associated with recognizable burials

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww63/OrangeUtan/random/7.jpg

Other relics of the pre-Genghis past except standing stones are stone circles, burial mounds, altars or petroglyphs.

Ulaanbaatars old architecture - besides the temples - can be found norht of Sukhbaatar square. Currently some of these rather decrepit buildings get renovated. These row houses were constructed in the 1940s in the Stalinist era

Until 1990, the countrys political system was similar to North Koreas. Stalins statues were destroyed after the Democratic Revolution in 1990 but his stooge Choybalsan and can still be seen not too far away ffrom the parliament building has survived just like also Lenin did.
But the last two statues constructed in UB were commemmorating theBeatles and Gandhi clearly showing what an enormous progress the country has made in rthe last two decades regarding political freedom.

And it was the only one which was operational (and not filled up with tractors) just to show the few visitors from the outside world that everything is okay in Mongolia and freedom of religion is guaranteed for everybody.
