WAHT'S UP: 'You got New York eyes..'

I MET a new club last week. It’s really an old club but the owners decided they didn’t need for business to slow down before injecting new life into it. In fact, this club called Liquid injected OLD life into their offering.

For the longest time, all I knew of Liquid was that it catered to an alternative lifestyle. Oh, alternative schmalternative. Who are we kidding here? We can say gay, can’t we? After all, it just means happy.

Just about a year ago I thought to check the place out and I saw very many men in singlets dancing with each other. There were brawny ones, there were slim, small ones. There were Greek gods and there were geeks. But there were very many of them.

And in the packed former-movie-theatre dance hall, there might have been nine women, all un-pretty, all wearing comfortable shoes.

Last week, however, the clientele composition seemed balanced. I went to the preliminaries of a retro DJ competition at Liquid and found that there were just as many men as there were women. And you can tell the difference between the two sets, how refreshing.

Dubious locale, in the Central Market complex of Jalan Lebuh Pasar, Kuala Lumpur. Nice decor, ample parking, fairly priced beverages.

What totally enthralled, however, was New York Eyes berkumandang di udara (in the air). This is the scorching Nicole and Timmy Thomas duet that mesmerised clubbing KL with its sensuousness, circa 1985. That, is retro. That, is R&B.

Since the legendary club BAZE fizzled out, no other club, not seven Spiral, played New York Eyes. And there is more. Liquid has Omar’s There’s Nothing Like This and Princess’s Say I’m Your Number One as well as Good To Be Back by Natalie Cole. Music from my time.

It’s such a big deal to me and my fellow ‘60s children because, despite claims by the biggest and best clubs in KL that they have retro on Wednesday nights and R&B on Thursdays, no one plays REAL R&B, much less New York Eyes. At best, they try to pass off hip hop and rap as R&B, shudders.

For so long now I have surveyed the scene for something like the music Liquid plays, at least once a week, but alas, the DJs keep playing techno.

Every club in operation and every club that opens these days will play house music and other sounds like it. One such club’s owner says she needs to tap into that market – generally aged between 18 and 33 – because it’s the biggest and most lucrative.

“Besides, we get older people too,” she insists. So I crawled around in her club one night and lo and behold, she was right. Not on the dance floor but on a cosy chair made for one is an older patron, a very much older patron, wrapped around a sweet young thing on his lap.

It was a cringing moment. How could he! To compromise his musical preferences and stay in that club just because some girl has got him pinned to his chair! Surely they don’t play Matt Monroe there...

So where do I and my contemporaries, with flowers in our hair, go? The grouping of 35s to 45s who still want to dance SOME of our nights away, to music we can understand and hopefully sing to.

What, there are too few of us? And fewer who go out nights? We don’t count? Wanna bet?

Some of us are finding that our children are old enough to be left home with the hired help at night. We’re tired of backgammon and we don’t want to learn sudoku. We want to paaarty.

Some of us have divorced and a good prowl once in a while doesn’t mean we’re redeeming our egos. It’s just that the years of waiting on spouses hand and foot have been too good for us. We need to breathe smoky air and drink unhealthy drinks. And yeah, maybe meet men who are as irritating as our ex-s.

We earn very healthy salaries, more then the pocket money of some rich kids even. We don’t try to “get in free” but if we do it’s because we’ll spend more than three times the first drink cover charge in one night, anyway.

The young ‘uns tend to share a coke. I’ve seen too many girls walk in free into clubs on “ladies nights” and then share a coke so their hands have something to do while they wait to get picked up by older patrons. How much money do clubs make off of these types?

We dress well, we drive upper range Protons and lower range Hondas and we don’t brawl. At least not in public.

Most important of all, we can dance. If we want to. Sound familiar? Men Without Hats, 1983.

KL's got some good clubbing scene. The Zouk is interesting and it's a lively as it's SG counterpart.

i do love movement when the first open because of the huge amount of space! and the very first club i entered was the infamous modesto rohas perkasa.

bali near the jambatan LDP was hot once... with the koi fish swimming in the ceiling above u on the middle of the dance floor!

then modesto bangsar, spiral, barbarran etc etc... and the list goes on...

the ones at Heritage row are nice..esp the Loft and Bar Sar Vanh...yeah.. Thai Club & Bistro also nice..a club with Thai element..sawadikap...:D
