That may be the case but does the one in the picture look remotely close to the actual thing?- that's what I meant.

I have seen the real tower upclose but don't recall it distantly close to the way it has been built in the fair ground. :cheers:

See the glass extending upwards into the burnt out areas? The arrow I drew is pointing to it. That's new. Compare to the pics I took four weeks ago from Sonargaon Hotel, in my trip report. I guess the driver who took us to Bashundhara on Dec 23rd was right...repairs are underway!

thats good news indeed....maybe Bashundhara Group realized that they will have a lot of tourists visiting their mall building during the Cricket World Cup:)

But that is ridiculously observant on your part, Tan! It's been around two years since the fire incident and so it's hightime they did this repairing job, even though I doubt they'll be able to finish this by the time the WC starts. But oh well, at least they're doing it. Better late than never I guess!

Now that I realize, I think I'll refrain from putting large images, maybe just smaller ones which will load faster.

^^ My suggestion / request is that you limit each posts to a few pics. Say, no more than four or so per post. For example if you look closely at your recent posts, there are several images a few years old...one shot of Bashundhara City before it got burned, one shot of Monem Business District before the facade was completed, etc. And choose quality over quantity. Find the photos that best showcase Dhaka or show something new or interesting, and stick with those. I actually like the big pictures better, but am overwhelmed by the sheer volume.

But it's up to you. I do really appreciate the effort you make to collect all these photos. I would love to participate more in this thread but just can't...either my computer would take an eternity to download all the photos, or the screen just freezes and I have to force-quit it.

Oh Wow!AJ Heights is looking good.I would imagine that the tower would look even better when viewed from the other direction as this other upcoming tower largely blocks this side of AJ Heights.
On the road leaing from Progati Sarani towards Badda and later Rampure,there are dozens of residential towers being built.I have greatly failed to cover projects on that area which still doesn't look too nice.....but is in the process of it.

Dhaka district admin fails to meet its January deadline to recover five canals

Dhaka district administration failed to recover city's four canals and file a single case against illegal housing projects occupying rivers during its month-long deadline ending in January. It however partially recovered one canal.

An inter-agency meeting of the administration decided to recover Devdholai (Kajlar Khal) in Demra, part of Ramchandrapur Khal out of Dhaka embankment, Baunia Khal (canal) in Uttara, Ulan Khal in Rampura and the main Kalyanpur Khal.

The canals are either grabbed by government agencies or private housing projects, as per findings of district administration's survey.

A High Court bench in June 2009, among other directions, directed authorities to free Buriganga, Turag, Balu and Shitalakhya rivers from various encroachments by November 30, 2010.

Later, the administration concerned obtained an extension of the deadline till May 30 this year.

At the meeting held at the end of December 2010, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Mohibul Haque instructed all assistant commissioners (land) concerned with the rivers to identify and inform him of the river grabbers with housing projects.

Assistant commissioner (land) of Keraniganj was instructed to place the list of land grabbers of Sobhadda Khal, which has been grabbed and recovered several times in the past.

But none of the assistant commissioners came up with the information though they held a similar meeting on February 13.

Asked on failure to file criminal cases against the river grabbers, the DC said, "District administration has to remain preoccupied with many other jobs."

According to officials concerned, two roads occupy Devdholai canal.

Habibur Rahman Mollah, local lawmaker of Demra, filled a stretch of the canal, four kilometre in length and 30 to 50 feet in width, for the construction of a road by Local Government Engineering Department. Dhaka Wasa owns this part of the canal for drainage of urban flood.

Habibur said the road occupies only several feet of the canal's width and was in the interest of the public.

Roads and Highways Department completely filled the other part, owned by Water Development Board, to build Dhaka-Narayanganj Road.

Regarding this canal, the DC said he placed the matter to the national taskforce on river and canal recovery on February 3 and they would instruct him for further developments. The part occupied by the road is irreversible, he added.

On the other hand, Ramchandrapur canal is occupied by different housing projects.

Nabinagar Housing occupies 1.7 acres of land, Sat Masjid Housing Ltd 72 decimals, Chandrima Housing 80 decimals, Ekota Housing 50 decimals, Dhaka Uddyan Housing 8 decimals and Basila Garden City and Future Housing Ltd 20 decimals each, he said.

Baitul Noor Jannat Jam-e Mosque also occupies 30 decimals while Mina Bazar 7 decimals, added Bashar.

Dhaka district administration served notices upon these grabbers with a February 10 deadline, he said.

Baunia canal has been acquired and filled up by Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha, said Abul Bashar Md Fakruzzaman, revenue deputy collector and executive magistrate of Dhaka.

The stretch of Ulan canal within Hatirjheel development project will be restored as part of the project, said Bashar.

However, during the deadline, the administration carried eviction drives and almost freed Kalyanpur main canal from illegal structures.

They also carried eviction drives in Turag River near Tongi Bridge to remove illegal structures and in Buriganga River in Mohammadpur to remove earth filling by sand traders.

Meanwhile, a mobile court led by Magistrate Bashar penalised three sand traders for earth filling in Turag River at Amin Bazar on February 3.

A joint team of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and Dhaka district administration also freed a stretch of Buriganga River foreshore in Lalbagh on February 14.

^^ Thanks for all the pictures, but my personal take is we should try to be more selective and post more photos focusing on the positive of the city rather than slums, dilapidated roads and construction mess.

I have visited some other subforum on cities like Kolkata, Karachi or Bangalore.. and they all focus on the positive developments and not the negatives. The whole world already knows about the problems/issues with Bangladesh and developing nations--- the net is filled with pics on flood,poverty and political unrest.. atleast we can use this forum as an outlet to show the other side.

I know all problems needs to be addressed, analyzed and solved. But I feel that skyscrapercity is probably not the place for that, since almost all the other threads(be it LosAngeles, Mumbai or Seoul) focuses on positives.. members visiting to learn the good stuff of other nations.

There are many other websites like changebangladesh.com or think tanks like Center for Policy Dialogue, dedicated to bring the young minds to solve national issues like poverty, population growth and rising sea level.

Looking at pictures of slums, spill over garbages and run down roads here will just turn off the foreign members from visiting our country. It won't really stir Bangladeshis to start discussing problems and solutions (as you can see in this thread, nobody even discussed about this). Bro, you are doing an EXCELLENT job in sharing pictures of life in Dhaka, please continue to do so. But give some thoughts regarding posting selective pictures..

That would be comparing apples with oranges. Each city has completely different dimensions (land use and population), demographics, profile, etc.

Having said that, I strongly discourage any such questions and comparisons, since they only lead to war of words.

whats wrong with the post? why it shud be deleted or edited? It will not create any war of words until anyone jumps on it with a fighting attitude and starts writing a reply with point a, b , c, d like some freaks do often here in SKC city page. He said Bangladesh is booming - true, Pakistan is going down the drain - true too, and of course even its not completely true, he has the right to express and He places Bangladesh after India, well that makes sense to me coz seems like India IS his motherland. I personally will thank him for his kind words. And will say: we DO NOT want any country to go to drain but, if Pakistan is going that way, then there are reasons behind it and we have a lot to learn from that.

A picture thread on Dhaka has nothing to do with Pakistan or any other country. If one Indian says Pakistan is going down the drain... next moment you will see a Pakistani posting about negative sides of India(gujrat incident, violence in Kashmir or NE India to name a few) and then the thread discussion moves towards that.

There are other political forums in the web to discuss such issues.

Shame about that metro line taking up part of the Parliament green space. At least it's for a good cause. If it were up to me I would boot the military from the central city and turn the airfield and cantonment into a central park / national mall. But of course it isn't up to me :)

I don't think you're the only one with that opinion. Most people would prefer the military facilities to be relocated elsewhere. The problem is that all political parties and political governments coddle the military, probably because they feel intimidated by them (the military establishment).

Such a nice and beautiful city...just as good as most indian cities...I will surely go to Dhaka one day...atleast I will feel safe and secure because there is no Taliban to kidnap me or anything like that that could happen if I went to Pakistan.

Did you know that the shabby old bridge next to the under construction flyover used to be one of the largest bridges of BD when it was built? People from different parts of BD used to come to Dhaka to visit this bridge. My uncle was one of them. :lol:

As an aside: Greater Dhaka city is always under construction. To alleviate horrible traffic gridlock, new highways and overpasses (here they call them flyovers) are constructed. Improving infrastructure is a messy business especially when the original planning lacked adequate vision. New Buildings, roads, flyovers -- construction everywhere! Consequently, dust enshrouds every nook and cranny.

Great pictures, you people have a beautiful country!

Some people on here say Bangladesh (Or rather Dhaka) looks "Chaotic", but still if you compare it to Iran (Tehran) it's very organized, check by our photo thread in the Iranian forums and you'll see what i mean.
