Some info about Sabra Sport GT:

A well-engineered Ford-special, the Reliant Sabre was born in 1961 when the British Reliant company, maker of lightweight three-wheelers teamed up with Autocars of Israel. Autocars bought the rights to Lesley Ballamay's ladder frame chassis and one of Ashley's fibreglass bodies in order to make an instant sports car to sell to America. Reliant engineered the car with 1703 cc Ford Consul engine and supplied the kits to Israel where Autocars assembled them.
Israelic build Sabras are chassis number 4xxx and they where build from 200 kits produced by the Tamworth factory and send to Autocars (aka Sabra) It is not reported how many of these cars where ever produced.
Reliant Sabre 4: 208 were built in chassis ranging from 200001 to 200208
Reliant Sabre 6: (SS300xxx), 77 built (not including the three Sabre-6 look-alike Sabre-4 with shortened nose)
Autocars wasn't prepared in time to assemble the kits so the production and export of the Sabras started and did run for a while at the Reliant factory with the cars never seeing Israel at all!
From 1962 the vulgar nose treatment was chopped and a GT version was offered. This updated version was also offered by a six-cylinder Ford Zephyr image. But it costed nearly the same as an Austin-Healey 3000 so it was not a success at all. In 1964 debuted the successor of Sabre, named Scimitar.
1960 Reliant Sabre Convertible. Chassis No. 1 prototype car. Wire wheels, manual gears, finished in powder blue with dark blue leather piped tight blue.

the funny part is had it been done now, with carbon fiber instead of fiberglass, we'd pull it through.

Nah, actually that's sad. :(

I never thought about cars from Israel. This Sabra Sport GT looks quite nice.
However, the Carmel and the Gilboa look like the Eastern-German Trabant ("Trabbi"), which one can fortunatly hardly see on the streets anymore - their exhaust gases smell like... :dizzy: !

']Why did Israel stopped make own cars?

Because it was a time where everyone made cars.

Now we source them, cause we are rich

']Why did Israel stopped make own cars?

I heard that the main reason was due to low selling rates in asmall market of atiny country so it wasn't so profitable.

AIL is one of the active car companys currently in Israel I believe. Do you have pictures of cars made from AIL? Good pictures by the way though I can't say I like the cars designs too much except that one sports car.

*EDIT: didn't realize this thread is from 2004!

No. They went out of business i think.
They might make car parts or something like that.

Israel moved from a place wheres it cheap to producde quality cars to a place where they demand "quality" (and i put it in quotes) cars from the far east (Malaysia, China, Japan, Korea)

israel makes great cars - humvee cars, also top of the line buses.

Kappa21
July 26th, 2006, 06:07 AM
i doubt it...

Israel might have a engineering firm that makes prototypes and sells it to Car companies, but thats about it..

I don't think Malaysia sells cars to Israel for polictical reasons. And i won't consider Chinese or Korean cars to be of good quality.

^^ I dont think we allow chinese or indian cars, yet.
A) Because of pressure from other big importers on govt. (cause these cars will be cheaper)
B) Safety standards
C) Cost - cheaper to import japanese/us/eu cars from east europe.

Malaysia do not have there own car companies. They are an affiliate of bigger comopanies like Opel or GM.

Once it goes on a boat, its an international boat..so we can get it. I dont think we have a problem with getting a Malaysian made car.

I heard they make a BMW's, but i think we get ours from Germany.

Sooner or later Chinese car companies will come to the market. I know it cause in Canada they are starting to make 'room' for them.
I think in Israel they will have it too!

The problem with them is that no one has tried them yet. But they have small engines..

for almost 25 years now, we made parts in China and assembled car parts from exhaust to body works to even an engine...
so since the chinese produce all the little products..why not produce a car.

Im still pessimistical about a MADE IN CHINA car, but i think that it needs a few years to get along.
KIA in Canada was bad...but now its building up somehow...

and we dont have Daewoo no more...they lost business.....
and no SEAT and no Opel and no Renault or Citreon..
cheap European cars..

i prefer some good ol' American steele :D

good riddance ^^ they are now part of GM/UMI :) so now they use there design but not there engine/system in making small cars for GM in North America...

Chevy Aveo is one example

chevrolet is doing preety good here, theyare trying to enter their luxury cars, they are doing better with teh cheper like aveo.

Kappa21
July 26th, 2006, 05:04 PM
Cheverlot was never a luxury car to start off with...

it was a regular mans car.

The only way it was going to be high end was with its trucks...they are expensive...
I think Cadillac and another brand is the only high end for GM...

Ford high end is Lincoln...
:D g-d bless america!

Livni, Merkavim is not really an auto company. They just assemble the buses (Merc, Volvo, DAF).

Shohad
July 26th, 2006, 07:16 PM
But Israeli companies design and build unique vehicles for military purposes.

Kappa21
July 26th, 2006, 08:07 PM
Does Merkavim only get huge parts of a bus and assemble them?
is that how they work?
