A smiling Buddha statue greets guests at the door, set against a background of indigo. “Welcome to Indigo Spice,” it seems to say, “and relax.” This restaurant is just a little over three weeks old and is already becoming a go-to place for people looking for Italian, continental and Indian cuisine. Or patrons who just want to chill in the bar or in the lounge with cocktails.

The four-bedroom house along Muthithi Road in Nairobi’s Westlands suburb was empty when Indigo Spice’s Tejal Ghelani spotted it. She immediately realised that its location was ideal: it was surrounded by both office premises and residential houses, opening up the possibility of attracting clientele from two distinct groups of people.

Fine dining
The house, she found, was large and roomy, and the kitchen spacious, in contrast with that of her other establishment, the Cafe Cafe located next to Unga House in Westlands. It’s position was ideal too. “The road [past the restaurant] is central for people driving to the city centre and to Westlands,” she says.

That makes it an ideal getaway for people harassed by Nairobi’s notorious traffic jams to stop by and have a drink or enjoy a meal in one of the restaurant’s five ambiences as they wait for the evening’s mad rush to die down and sanity to return to the roads. At Indigo Spice you can treat yourself to the experience of your choice, from fine dining, to a drink at the bar or even a light-hearted conversation over a snack as you relax in luxurious leather sofas in the lounge area.

There’s a bakery besides, that serves pastries, sandwiches and coffee for people on their way to work in the morning or who want lunch on the go. Ms Ghelani, the proprietor, has accumulated a wealth of experience over the span of 17 years from time she opened her first restaurant, to the set up of Indigo Spice. She hopes this will be her best venture yet.

Variety of cuisines
While running Cafe Cafe that it occurred to Ms Ghelani that her menu was so fixed as to appear somewhat rigid, prompting her to take the bold step of offering three different cuisines on the Indigo Spice menu. “The menu is to offer people a variety of distinct tastes to choose from according to their preference,” she says.

Her patrons appear to enjoy the choice available to them. When she weaves her way around tables at the restaurant, she notices that people sharing a meal together at one table have picked dishes from different cuisines. She worked with her chefs for two months to come up with a menu that, she says, had to be completely different from the other restaurants in the wider Westlands area in order to attract clients. The unusual mix of Indian, continental and Italian cuisines seems to have been just what she needed to give her the edge.

She then hired two chefs from India each with a minimum of 16 years’ experience in five-star hotels and cruise ships. “I just explain to them what I want because they understand different palates,” she says.

Kenyans are already acquainted well acquainted with the Italian cuisine so in planning her menu, she did not limit herself to the pasta although she does serve these too, including a particular pasta dish unique to Indigo Spice—a pasta with broccoli and hazel nuts.

The Tandoori fish, a roasted stuffed fish, has quickly become a favourite. It takes a year for a restaurant to know its “diehard” regulars—people who are comfortable enough to tell her where and when she gets it right or wrong—according to Ms Ghelani. In the meantime, she plans to keep people coming back by serving daily specials just as she does at Cafe Cafe.

Served chilled
In addition there will be a live jazz band on Fridays while on Wednesdays patrons will be treated to “Indigo Spice Served Chilled” an event in the lounge area with lots of candles and a DJ play soft music in the background.

With the lounge area strategically in the backyard of this charming old house, the restaurant can be hired for parties. The lounge comes complete with its own kitchenette and is far away enough from the main house to allow for a separate affair. When Ms Ghelani began to renovate the premises nine months ago in preparation for launching the restaurant, the economy was not as bad as it is now. This does not worry her much, but the rising insecurity in the area does. Still, she says, there are always people looking for somewhere to go.

Nairobi Wealthy area: Westlands
Westlands is traditionally Nairobi’s social and entertainment centre for expatriates and wealthy Kenyans, a lively cluster of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs 3 km to the northwest of the central business district. One of the city’s largest modern shopping plazas, the four-storey Sarit Centre, is here, competing with two smaller centres nearby. There are dozens of restaurants, three late-night western-style bars, two nightclubs and a casino. Westlands is a favourite with Nairobi’s large Indian/Asian community. The residential roads ringing the busy hub are popular with Kenyans and expatriates, young singles who live in 1980s/1990s apartment blocks, as well as families in older houses, all attracted by the choice of facilities.

The quieter, smarter streets spread into Spring Valley to the north, where the apartment blocks give way to bungalows and large, detached houses. Some streets here are gated, with security staff screening visitors. Peponi House, an international primary day school, is located here. Westlands’ southern edge borders the busy Waiyaki Way, a main route to Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, which saw some of the worst post-election violence in early 2008. The road is served by dozens of buses and matatus heading into the city centre. Alternatively, a taxi there will cost KSh400.

By the way, being an expat and being paid in euros or dollars and affording to live in an apartment in Westlands does not make you wealthy. Maybe we can term it as enhanced purchasing power because of income coming in form foreign currency which can convert to a weaker local currency. So it just makes look more moneyed than the average folk that's all.

I don't think you can classify westlands as wealthy anymore. Maybe middle class. The wealthy people line in Karen, Kitusuru, Nyari and other places...where you find real homes (mansions with big compounds swimming pool.et al.... All those proliferation of high-rise apartments has made westlands a middle class neighborhood.

What about suburbs like Riverside, Spring Valley and Brookside? they are in Westlands and they are wealthy.

I agree, I think we are talking wealthy not neccessarily wealthiest. Westlands|Parklands corridor houses I think the largest number of SME & Large enterprise managers who own/run businesses in the larger industrial area and Eastlands area where they are concentrated. The proliferation of private schools in the area is a good case in point, also a large swathe of the Kenya Asian population whom to most Kenyans perception are generally considered wealthy reside here.

It may not seem as wealthy to an expatriate who plys his/her trade in the comfort of San Francisco, Tokyo or London but again I do not know of any other place in Kenya that has the highest number of White collar jobs per capita as Westlands (Of excluding the nearby Kangemi suburb) the existece of numerous accounting offices and entry of safaricom to the area just reinforces my point.

Why do they still have those mabati structures in Westlands? This is an uptown area and those sheds should not be there. Its an eye-sore and they are definately lowering the value of properties around the area. NCC needs to do something.

There are still many fruitkiosks that dot westlands, especially around bus stage, I suggest the City Council shoud work with the sellers to upgrade the structures or they should do it unilaterally and rent them out.

In light of the current global recession, the cost of building a new hotel chain from scratch is a pipedream to most developers today. So who in their right mind would risk millions in this climate betting on an uncertain future Thankfully, there are still visionaries who buck trends, get out in front of current global gloom and generate commerce, jobs and help to spur a comeback for the industry. One such company is hotel management firm, Sankara Hotel Group which hopes to manage deluxe hotels in key gateway cities in Africa through their Sankara Hotels and Resorts brand. Whilst this may seem overly ambitious to some, to them there is a clear belief that on the back of increased investments, there is a new generation of travelers to the continent who are demanding a newer type of hotel and their timing couldn’t be better. The company is in the final phase of completing its first unit in Westlands, Nairobi. The $30 million, 156-room, 5-star Sankara Nairobi is scheduled to open its doors in the fourth quarter of 2009.
“It is a good thing to be anti-cyclical – that is, build when the business is not so good – and by the time we are ready (after the initial start up challenges), hopefully the world economy will have picked up,” says Jan-Paul Kroese, general manager of Sankara , Nairobi.

This insight has been the key impetus for the Sankara development. “I believe that there is need for more hotel rooms in the city, which will create more opportunities once business executives and airlines are assured of enough bed capacity,” he says.
Echoing Kroese’s sentiment is Mr. Mike Macharia, the chief executive of Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers, who also believes that the city lacks bed capacity. “There metro-is more demand than we can meet as Nairobi attracts business and conference tourists,” says Macharia. “For instance, during the 2007 World Social Forum, the city’s bed capacity could not fully handle the 10,000 delegates who attended the global event, as some had to stay in people’s homes.” According to Macharia, Nairobi currently has a total bed capacity of about 3000 (good quality hotels). “The addition of about six new hotels (under construction), will increase the city’s bed capacity by about 1000.”
Leveraging the shortfall in bed capacity as compared to potential, Sankara Nairobi adds to the list of growing new hotel constructions in and around Nairobi. Over the past 2 years, the city has witnessed the opening of several top-of-the-line hotels. Luxury, boutique hotel, Tribe, opened last year. Other hotels include the 163-room Crowne Plaza hotel, 134 room Ole-Sereni hotel and 245 room Radisson hotel. This growth in new hotel construction reflects the growth in the appetite for luxury products in the region. “The signs are out there. If you look at other hotels being built, you will notice that there is a big change in Nairobi from what it used to be years back into a more cosmopolitan city. At the moment, there is over one million square feet of office space under construction in the Westlands area of Nairobi so we expect a big shift [of business] from other areas [into Westlands],” says Kroese.
In the spirit of Nairobi’s growing metropolitan milieu, the owners chose the name Sankara. It is a Sanskrit word, meaning ‘causer of tranquility’. True to that, Sankara Nairobi will have a world-class urban spa with seven appointed treatment rooms and two hydrotherapy rooms presenting a mix of eastern and western therapies. The spa will be managed by Banyan Tree through its award-winning Angsana brand. And of course, you can’t have all of that tranquility without a resident health club, fitted with a gym, Turkish steam room, a sauna and an outdoor rooftop swimming pool, to top it all off.
Kroese says that the Nairobi hotel will house a multifunctional meeting space that caters for 150 people, complete with a fully loaded business centre. And what’s a five-star hotel without its food? Sankara Nairobi will have five gathering spots including a food gallery, wine bar and Pan-Asian restaurant spread out over the first floor – styled with sophisticated use of colour and texture showcasing the very best of modern African art. The main multi-cuisine restaurant will host an outdoor terrace and a live show kitchen that will allow guests to freely interact with kitchen staff while sampling cuisines prepared by Head Chef, Gaetano Sgroi, a native Italian.
Sgroi is a star in his own right. He brings 23 years of culinary expertise including residencies at the Hyatt Regency in Belgrade, Serbia and the Park Hyatt in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he opened the highly awarded Zafferano Restaurant. Prior to this, Sgroi also worked as an Italian Specialist Chef with Shangri-La Beijing and Ciragan Palace Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey.
Until his current appointment, Kroese worked for IHG (InterContinental, Nairobi, Amstel InterContinental, Amsterdam and Holiday Inn, Accra Ghana). Preceding this, he worked for Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group during the pre-opening of the Mandarin Oriental New York and The Mark, New York. He has also worked for the Japanese based group, Okura Hotels and Resorts in their ‘Leading Hotel of the World’ Okura Garden Hotel in Shanghai, China.
Product pricing for the hotel is yet to be determined but Kroese says he prefers a BAR (best available rate) pricing model since it is internationally competitive. He adds that although Sankara Nairobi is a five star deluxe hotel, his team will endeavor to offer more than just five stars. “Existing hotel rating systems (one to five stars) are subject to own interpretation since every hotel should have its own internal rating system. It is always good to ask yourself questions about the service you offer [for instance], does a guest get value for what he is paying? Can your company live up to its brand promise? If the answer is yes, then you can even be a 20 star,” he says, adding that any property is only as good as its last guest check-out.

Westlands, located to the Northwest of the CBD, is considered the hub of Nairobi’s nightlife. During the night, the well lit streets are inviting as one makes his way through the lively cluster of restaurants, late-night western-style bars, various nightclubs and casinos. Westlands has one of the city’s largest modern shopping plaza, the four- floor Sarit Centre which entails a supermarket, clothing stores, a food court, banks, restaurants and movie theatres. Along one of the streets are curio shops and stalls that sell quality second hand clothes and shoes' so on. Despite all this activity, Westlands tends to have a relatively more relaxed atmosphere when compared to the city centre.

While it used to be highly popular with the Indian/Asian community and the expatriate community, that is fast changing and more and more black Kenyans are now moving in. Its proximity to the city centre yet not being in the thick of it has prompted many businesses to relocate here from the city centre. Others consider it as a strategic place to have an office or have a branch.

That's a great Neighbourhood Kenguy with great shots to boot, Counting it as a CBD of its own I bet Westlands(Waiyaki way stretch specifically) has the most concentration of cranes than any other urban centre in Kenya Nairobi central Included!

I havent had a chance yet to go to other areas like upperhill though you are right about Waiyaki way. Theres a new building going up near the standard bank HQ which is also still UC. Another tower is going up next to the Bandari plaza tower.

One of the parking lots in the CBD near Kencom has been fenced off. I dont know if they are going to put up another tower there. Theres alot of stuff going on.

With all the 'Mega Projects' Mukhesh Ambani's DELTA CORP has planned for Nairobi(5 My last count), and indeed all of EA Iam seing India being a very formidable investor in kenya in the near future, its seems Britain's investment have levelled up and America looks like they are more interested in just democracy and aid.

Westlands: City Within a City

State-of-the art developments have made Westlands a city within a city. Modern architectural designs are common in this up-market hood as developers scramble for the remaining space. Real estate has shifted into top gear with hardly any land left. Developers here are forced to buy old property, pull them down and erect apartments.

More high-rise residential buildings are coming up especially along Lower Kabete Road where Garden Apartments and Nuriana Park are under construction. Majority of the upcoming apartments in Westlands are either three or four bedrooms, which private developers say are in demand.

Most modern developments are around Brookside Grove, Muguga Green, Chiromo Road, Ring Road Westlands, Matundu Lane, School Lane and Brookside Drive.

Cosy life
Shopping malls and modernly furnished apartments are among the latest developments in commercial and residential real estate. Residents of this area, popularly known as Westy, live cosily as infrastructure and social amenities are not a problem. Westgate, Nakumatt Ukay, Sarit Centre and The Mall are among the many alternatives to shop in the area. High cost learning institutions, private hospitals, banks, financial institutions and sports bars explain why the area is lucrative.

Modern multi-storied buildings host corporate firms.

Here's another busy corner on Waiyaki way. That's another hotel coming up (crane to the left). Im not sure about the building thats almost complete (far right), and what they are building where the second crane is (behind the billboard).

I think some of these businesses should also consider Eastlands, if they can move out of Westlands it would be a great opportunity for employment and would greatly reduce traffic into the CBD. Easlands produces most of NRB's jams because they form a major part of the workforce in the CBD.

Most Kenyan corporations are not willing to invest in very tall buildings maybe to cut cost or its no longer feasible for them. But the influx of foreign entities like Delta is breathing a new lease of life on this front.

to Kenny's Fried Chicken, then it collapsed as it had lost the
franchise (and the chicken formula)

Amazing how some people in Kenya can afford huge modern SUV's live in mansions, employ dozens of house workers, buy the best everything and shop at ultra modern stores, while in the same country people are dying of preventable deceases like malaria, they cant afford a simple bicycle, live in a poor excuse for a house and drink water from dirty polluted rivers.

I have to say being Kenyan, I am sick of the way things are. I mean I know every country has it's issues and the rich never take care of the poor, but I am still disappointed nonetheless. I wish there was something I could do, but in order to be able to do anything I would need to get a high position in Kenya, and those positions seem to be almost exclusively accessible only to corrupt or extremely ignorant individuals who directly after being appointed to these posts, get their brains replaced with cow manure.

Nairobi Medium area: Parklands

Parklands, due north of the city centre, is traditionally an Indian/Asian zone. The area is dotted with mosques and Hindu temples and there is a hospital, a university and school named after one of its most illustrious benefactors, the Aga Khan, who spent his early childhood in Nairobi. Housing is a mix of apartments, townhouses and large, detached houses in private compounds, although some of the properties are in poor repair. Highridge shopping centre at the junction of Masari Road and 4th Parklands Avenue has a good selection of shops and other amenities, including two supermarkets, a late-night chemist, banks, an optician, a bakery, a butcher and a furniture retailer.

The colourful daily Hawkers’ Market on Limuru Road sells fresh fruit and vegetables, second-hand shoes and clothes. The landscaped gardens and indigenous trees of the nearby City Park offer a welcome escape from the noise and pollution of the city, as well as a good place to see monkeys and butterflies. Local entertainment centres around Diamond Plaza, a few steps from Highridge; known affectionately by the local population as Little India, this arcade of shops, bars and restaurants draws a mostly young crowd from within the area and beyond. The bars and clubs of Westlands are also just a short drive away.

There is no bus service through Parklands but there are plenty of matatus on the main roads. A taxi to the city centre costs around Ksh300; the fare to the industrial area in the southeast, where many of the local residents have their businesses is roughly Ksh800.

I'm afraid Sakangu's right. Remember the Triton saga? This was the first casualty. They are still sorting out the company's assets and my hope is for someone else to take over this project.

I hear the Nairobi serena is also about to be expanded and a large conference facility will be built where their parking lot stands today (the one across the street from the hotel.) Looks like everyone has their eyes set for a tourist boom.:)

i don't even recognize westlands anymore. i think that there is a SERIOUS construction boom in nairobi and no one is paying attention to it. i can barely recognize nairobi anymore!!!!!

Nah! Its not a project. I have seen this one many times over the years in property magazines especially those belonging to Villa Care Kenya (Mentor group). They usually present it as a sample of what they can design.

I was walking through Westlands today and I couldn't help thinking about Nairoberry's comment. Westlands is changing rapidly.

Let me put it this way. Its hard to find a street without any new building or construction cranes...the cranes are literally everywhere. I hope I'll be able to take pics in the coming days.

These are just but a few. I didn't get time to go behind sarit centre or towards westgate mall coz i noticed a few more cranes there. I think the relevant authorities should just get rid of the few remaining colonial residential houses and improve on the supporting infrastructure ( proper footpaths, streetlights etc) otherwise westlands is good enough to be the CBD of most African capitals. Plus the best view of the westlands skyline in my opinion is along ojijo road close to parklands sports club. Any1 near there should do the neccessary
