The Sh2.9 billion expansion works on the Kisumu airport are well under way and it is likely the facility will be completed on schedule.

Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director George Muhoho recently said upgrade of the airport was on course and will be ready for use next year.

“Going by the speed at which the work is moving, we are sure by next year the facility will be ready for use,” Mr Muhoho disclosed.

Upon completion, the facility will be upgraded into a world class international facility, with capacity to handle up to 280 passengers per hour

I have used Eldy a number of times. Its Not as big as you may Imagine. I think its just the right size. The Original idea was to make it a cargo port for the agricaltural produce which it was realy ideal. It didnt take off fast but it is taking off now with more cargo

from the amount of planes on the render it looks like they expect the airport to handle a lot of passengers. i could also tell the airport will become inadequate quick. why not add jetways instead of making people walkout onto the tarmac.

lagos's newly built domestic terminal is already becoming crowded and inadequate and it was designed to be expandable. lagos is now going to build two more terminals to deal with the problem. i have a feeling the same will happen to this airport

This airport is nowhere near the size of MMIA:lol:. I also think that jetways would have been a good idea. There is still plenty of room for future expansion and believe me, in less than 10 years we may need another expansion program. The budjet airlines fad for domestic flights has just started in Kenya and many more kenyans will prefer flying to taking long road trips if made affordable. Kisumu needed a decent airport and at least now its getting one.

Nice updates folks, I didn't think that this type of forum would exist. The Airport's render is superb. I will be traveling later-on this year to Kisumu and will of-course get more pictures of the brand new airport.

I'm also made aware that the entrance will not be the usual entrance for those that have used the airport. the new entrance will be at the Kisumu-Busia road section close to Otonglo market.

Dont be too surprised when Entebbe starts having expansion plans (its the only one together with Kilimanjaro without plans as far as I know). Besides, I dont think it will make that much of a difference. For example, Mwanza in TZ had a larger airport than Kisumu but I dont see how that affected air traffic bound for Kisumu.

Kenya: Africa's Newest Aviation Hub?

Filed in archive Aviation News by Terah Shelton on May 8, 2007
With the rehabilitation of 15 airstrips, the renovation of the Moi International Airport, and the expansion of the Kisumu Airport, Kenyan government is making bold strides to become the leading aviation hub in Africa.

Transport minister, Mr. Chirau Ali Mwakwere, said that the move was in tandem with the ongoing harmonization of aviation sector in the East Africa Community and Comesa region. He said the Government would continue to provide the necessary infrastructure and put in place appropriate policies to enable the aviation industry to thrive.

"Kenya will be one of the leading countries in Africa in terms of aviation," he said. He added: "This year, 10 more airstrips are planned for upgrading while 14 more will be inspected for rehabilitation." Among airports earmarked for upgrading is Moi International Airport in Mombasa, which is currently under going renovation, and Kisumu Airport whose run way will be extended at estimated cost of Sh2.6 billion.

At the Kisumu Airport, the terminal building will be expanded and the runway increased to 3.2km, from the current 2.1km, to accommodate bigger aircraft. A new control tower will also be built.

Other facilities to be upgraded are lighting and security systems. Another airport in the sights of KAA for expansion is the Malindi Airport, which locals want to be upgraded to an international airport. The Wajir Airport terminal building has been constructed and the control tower rehabilitated for the airport to serve both military and civilian aircraft.

Fourth airline launches flights between Nairobi, Kisumu

ALS Dash 8 has launched services between Kisumu and Nairobi, bringing to four the number of airlines operating that route. The airline will fly in and out of the lakeside town to Wilson Airport in the mornings and evenings daily.

Each flight has capacity to carry 37 passengers. Yesterday, the schedule flights Manager Muhamed Taher hinted at the possible addition of more flights if the market proves suitable. "If we establish that the route is viable, we may introduce midday flights to enhance our domestic services," said Mr Taher.

MPs Olago Aluoch (Kisumu West), Shakeel Shabir (Kisumu East) and Kisumu Airport Manager Joseph Okumu attended the launch. Taher said the ALS Dash 8 flight was developed in the late 1970s due to increased market demand for a new generation 30-to 40-seater commuter airline.

Kenya Airways, Fly 540 and Jetlink have been the only airlines plying the route. They all fly passengers directly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Yesterday, Olago appealed to the Government to reduce taxes levied on air tickets.

exorbitant fares
He said many people avoid using airlines because of the exorbitant fares caused in large measure by high taxation. "Air transport is no longer a luxury as many people use it for business. We want the Government to reduce taxes," he said.

For instance, the Government taxes between Sh2,000 to Sh3,000 on air fares, capitalising on the willingness of travellers to pay more for better passenger experience and faster travel. If a passenger pays Sh4,200 for fare, the tax is Sh2,000, almost double the ticket cost.

Olago called on the Government to review the taxes downwards, to promote air transport and boost domestic tourism. The airline launched the flight at a time when the Kisumu airport runway had been shortened during ongoing rehabilitation and expansion.

Kisumu Airport Upgrade Project On Schedule

The serene lakeside city of Kisumu is about to have an international airport soon following upgrades undertaken by the Kenyan government. The extension of the Kisumu Airport runway and expansion of other facilities is going on according to plan. According to the airport manager, Mr Joseph Okumu, the project is halfway through and right on course. The project is expected to be complete by August.

Kenya Airports Authority is extending the length of the runway from the previous two kilometres to 3.3km. Initially, the runway was to be lengthened to 3km but this was revised to 3.3km.Kenyan aviation authorities are satisfied with the progress of the project and have confirmed that the extra 300m of the runway will be done, indicating that the Government is working out modalities of completing the added length.

Once the project is completed, the airport will handle Boeing 767s, Airbus 310 and 300, bigger aircraft which could previously not land or take off on the shorter runway. The apron area is also being enlarged and this, according to the airport manager, will allow cargo aircraft to land in Kisumu. Aware that the runway is being extended, some investors are making enquiries about setting up operations at th improved facility. One of the companies, One Jet One, wants to start operating an Airbus 320 in August this year. Some charter flight companies have also expressed an interest in operating from the airport. This is apart from normal concessions like setting up hangars and godowns, according to Kenyan aviation authorities.

There is a firm that wants to start an aviation training school and a flying school. Other firms have expressed interest in starting ground handling business at the airport. Yet others want to build a five-star hotel at the airport. Thomsons Airways, the third largest airline operator by passenger traffic in the UK, has also enquired about the possibility of operating a Boeing 757 aircraft the lakeside airport. Situated in the hub of the East African community,Kisumu Airport is expected to become a major aviation hub in the near future, interconnecting the various cities around the lake.

According to this news, it should have completed in august:

http://allafrica.com/stories/201005170307.html

Nairobi — The Government is cutting on costs to speed up completion of Kisumu International Airport by August this year.

According to Transport permanent secretary, Mr Cyrus Njiru, the contractor will now have to concentrate on completing extension of the runway, strengthen it and constructing runway shoulders that will be able to handle Boeing 767 aircraft.

He said construction of a new cargo apron and a section of the car park will have to be halted to be done later.

Different contract

"The new cargo and a section of the car park can be constructed later under a different contract," he said during a meeting with Netherlands Airport Consultants and the contractor, Chinese Overseas Engineering Company.

Mr Njiru wanted the contractor to halt construction of a passenger terminal but after discussions he agreed to the building of the mezzanine.

He asked the consultant to advise the contractor on how to proceed with the changes. "We expect you (consultants) to advise the contractor on the changes that the government has effected, so that we can complete construction on time," said the PS during his inspection of the airport.

In the era of development by leaps and bounds in countries all over Africa, I do not expect to hear cuts in budgets for infrastructure projects like this. That is not a way forward. Change please. And how come Nakuru does not have an airport? Nakuru county could do well with an international airport.

Kisumu International Airport to begin operations in May

http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/InsidePage.php?id=2000028781&cid=14&j=&m=&d=

The much-awaited Kisumu International Airport will be up and running by May this year after two and half years of renovation and expansion.

The facility is likely to build the Nyanza economy coming at a time when the region is on the path to economic recovery with several investments coming up.

Yesterday, Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Stephen Gichuki said the ongoing construction was 90 per cent complete.

increased passenger traffic

Gichuki said the new terminal building will handle up to 700 persons per hour, translating to two million traffic per annum. This will surpass the current traffic of 300,000.

He made the revelations during Kisumu Airport stakeholders’ business forum that brought together local investors eyeing business opportunities at the port.

"We are at the finishing line and are now focusing on enhancing business opportunities at the Airport," Gichuki told the forum.

He urged those who will be allocated space at the airport to do business to ensure they uphold high moral standards of service so that they stay afloat.

Some of the business openings at the facility up for grabs include duty free shops, and curio shops, cargo handling, catering and transport services.

Gichuki told curio shop investors to use the arts works to promote Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage and to boost tourism earnings.

The expansion is estimated at Sh3 billion. Work at the site begun on 29 October 2009. Initially the works was to end in August last year.

But Nyanza leaders led by Prime Minister Raila Odinga asked for more funds to extend the runway, which the delayed completion date.

When Completed, Kisumu International Airport will be among the top eight busiest regional airports in East Africa and is expected to create more than 30,000 jobs fuel business growth and stir up the hitherto East African economies by boosting bilateral trade.

Kisumu airport manager Joseph Okumu said the facility would handle Boeing 737-800 planes and Airbus of 310 capacities or any plane with similar capacities that would fly directly from Kisumu to other international destinations.

Nyanza PC Francis Mutie and Kisumu Mayor Sam Okello said local businessmen were upbeat as the expanded airport will open the lakeside side to visitors.

Kisumu Airport Expansion:project fuels reflection and big dreams

Driving along the Kisumu Busia highway is not always a rosy affair with its giant pot holes and rogue road users.Recently, another nuisance has been added to the scene:dust. There has been a beehive of activity. The China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Company is busy at work expanding the long neglected Kisumu Airport that is expected to become a major aviation hub as the economic dividends of East African integration translate into increased passenger numbers and trade.

Currently, the facility can only accommodate the Boeing 737s but the expansion will ensure the larger 767s ,which are the most popular for international travels are able to use the facility. The apron and taxiway will also undergo major refurbishment to fit into the requirements.Analysts say the airport has the potential to shore up Kenya's earnings from exports and foreign exchange to EU, Asia and American markets.

But as they say,you can't eat potential.Something must done. And Kisumu residents feel they should do that something in order to make full use of the airport."We must invest in something, maybe fish processing or horticulture, otherwise we will be reduced to plane-spotting;we will be watching people come and go instead of utilizing the facility to our benefit."

But what has Kisumu got to offer?Kisumu is not an agricultural hub but a net importer of almost all foodstuffs. The city does not host major multinationals or industrial complexes. The city is neither a financial hub nor an IT hub.But the residents are aware that they must convert their beautiful sleepy city into a some kind of "hub" if they are to fully harness the opportunities of the new look Kisumu Airport.

NGO City
The last two decades has seen a steep growth of non governmental organizations most of them dealing with health and community development but now there is a realization that business driven economic growth should be central to the sustainable and long term growth of the city. The NGOs have not been sustainable and they have not solved the city's social and economic problems.

Another possible sustainable avenue to growth is tourism. The region was expected to get some impetus from Obamamania but from what I saw,and with the poor roads to Obama's ancestral home, the pilgrimage to Kogelo has been a trickle and not the expected avalanche. The region's business community should invest in and market(the Magical Kenya campaign is doing a great job marketing the Western Kenya Tourism Circuit) viable tourist hotels and resorts that give visitors value instead of the halfhearted second rate hotels and resorts currently available.

The keyword is investment.Whoever invests in Kisumu's and Nyanza's fledgling agricultural ,property and tourism sectors at this time will reap great dividends when the region's fortune change for the better. From the look of things, that future is not that far off.And the residents of Kisumu will find greater financial value and profitable ventures from their airport rather than plane-spotting.

Kisumu Airport Expansion:project fuels reflection and big dreams

http://www.flight-africa.com/2011/02/kisumu-airport-expansionproject-fuels.html

Its true that Kisumu isnt a hub for anything...its sleepy as they say and the airport notwithstanding, it needs alot more investment to get it going and sustainable. I was saddened to find that the Cinema at United Mall had closed down and that space up there is empty and just gathering dust.
Maybe there should be investment in tourism...Kisumu could be a holiday destination, it has quite alot to offer to tourists and the diversity is amazing...such projects or investments are the ones that would help grow the city and make that airport usefull to capacity.
Does anyone know what happened to that idea from KR to develop some property in the town? And why cant someone with access to capital develop the pier area - a leisure spot, conference facilities, shopping, a marina etc...doesnt it have a potential to sustain such?

Maybe there should be investment in tourism...Kisumu could be a holiday destination, it has quite alot to offer to tourists and the diversity is amazing...such projects or investments are the ones that would help grow the city and make that airport usefull to capacity.
Does anyone know what happened to that idea from KR to develop some property in the town? And why cant someone with access to capital develop the pier area - a leisure spot, conference facilities, shopping, a marina etc...doesnt it have a potential to sustain such?

As usual, just wait and see. There's one thing I've noticed these past few years in Kenya. Places with new infrastructure are now having a construction boom. Kisumu is not just getting an airport upgrade but also new highways. Once they are all complete, this place has no excuse not to attract investments.

Construction on the expanded runway, taxiway and apron is gradually nearing completion at the Kisumu airport, after the terminal building and other facilities had been upgraded and expanded before already.

The ‘new’ Kisumu airport, which on the occasion of ‘inaugurating’ it by the end of July is expected to be named a new international airport, will then have runway of 3.3 kilometres length, capable for the landing and takeoff by all wide bodied aircraft presently in use. Passenger throughput capacity has been raised to as many as 700 per hour, although that is not expected to be fully utilized until a much later stage.

Watch this space for the announcement later in July, that the ‘tape’ was officially cut, making ‘Kisumu International’ finally a reality.

Global Take-Off Soon for Kisumu Airport

Nairobi — The third busiest airport in Kenya has seen a transformation from domestic to international standards, raising hopes it will spur regional economic growth and lower the historic poverty levels.

Kisumu Airport had been serving just ten airlines flying domestic routes and only carrying passengers.

In October 2008, the expansion and the upgrading of the airport began, with a total of Sh3 billion being set aside by the government and the World Bank to improve the strategic airport.

The runway, which was initially 2.1 kilometres was extended a kilometre longer, while its width was extended by 15 meters to accommodate larger planes.

The airport's apron has also been expanded, and a new terminus that can attend to up to 700 passengers per hour was built. The terminal has the ability to check in passengers for eight flights simultaneously.

Kogony clan

Although the airport was intended to be completed in 22 months, construction works were delayed due to constant wrangles between the Kenya Airports Authority and members of the Kogony clan, who live in areas surrounding the airport.

The clan complained on several occasions that they had not been compensated for the land they surrendered for the expansion of the airport and that they had been side lined in the allocation of jobs at the facility during the expansion.

In October last year, members of the community who had been compensated land in Muhoroni moved to the airport and threatened to block further construction and fencing, claiming that they had not been given land as agreed, in Muhoroni.

The protesters claimed that private developers had been allowed to build on the land that was earmarked for the airport expansion.

During the protests, Kogony ward councillor Joseph Osir said the community had been promised an ultramodern primary school with two streams at the cost of Sh50 million, and that they could not understand why the school that was under construction was downgraded to a one-stream one, done to a cost of Sh19 million.

The councillor, flanked by his nominated counterpart George Weda, claimed that according to documents in their possession, the community gave a total of 206.09 hectares of land for the expansion.

"The title deed on the lease certificate indicates 362.9 hectares, thus say 158.81 hectares of our land is in dispute," Mr Osir said.

The community demanded that construction activities at the airport be stopped until their issues had been addressed and a lasting solution found.

During the times of solving dispute, construction works at the facility were halted several times, pushing the completion to close to one year later.

The issues raised by the community were later addressed, enabling construction to resume. For now, the relocated Usoma Primary School is still under construction.

The completion of the construction works at the airport sparks new hopes for investors in the western region, who are optimistic that the expansion and upgrading to international standards will boost the region's economy by opening up new business opportunities.

Farmers and businessmen have started introducing new crops, products and investments in preparation for the commissioning of the airport and introduction of cargo flights.

Earlier this month, the authority unveiled a new raft of investment opportunities, which included provision of aviation fuel, ground handling services and the management of an automated car park.

"We are now focusing on enhancing new business opportunities and encouraging people to open up more," KAA managing director Stephen Gichuki said during a stake holder's business forum in the lake side city.

After commissioning, Kisumu International Airport will have large aircraft like the Boeing B737 and B767 landing safely.

The third busiest airport in the country has recorded steady growth in passenger numbers. In December last year, passenger numbers increased to 24,271 up from 16,989 in 2009.

The expansion which has lasted two years is expected to offer an estimated 30,000 jobs and boost bilateral trade.

Apart from the direct earning expected from businesses and employment, Nyanza Province and the whole of western region expects to receive a higher number of domestic and foreign tourists.

Locals also enjoy enhanced security while value for land adjacent to the facility has appreciated tremendously.

Several construction projects have also sprung up around the facility while numerous hotels have been built or are under construction within and around the lake side city.

Even nearby towns like Ahero are now feeling the growth ahead of the commissioning of the new facility which will greatly open up the region for serious business with the rest of the world. Fish, horticultural products will now be exported directly to Europe and other world markets.

During a visit to the facility earlier this month however, the PS Cyrus Njiru of the Ministry of Transport said that the facility will not hold cargo flights yet, but collaboration between several stake holders would speed up cargo handling facilities and the emergence of cargo flights.

"The second phase of the airport expansion will concentrate on handling cargo flights, being the biggest need of the area that requires economic growth and poverty eradication" Mr Njiru said.

"We can now proudly say that the airport expansion and upgrading has been successful despite the various challenges that the Ministry and the Kenya Airports Authority faced" Mr Njiru said.

The PS attributed the delay in completion to the need to meet international standards and expectations of travellers, now that the facility was being transformed.

"The government needed to deliver a fist class international airport and fit it in the class stipulated by Vision 2030," Mr Njiru said.

Kisumu airport to open doors in one month

Updated 2 hr(s) 34 min(s) ago
By Kepher Otieno

The much-awaited Kisumu International Airport will be officially commissioned in a month’s time, as engineers wind-up construction works.

Airport manager Joseph Okumu told The Standard that works at the new site was now 98 per cent complete.

"What we are doing now is test runs to ensure that all is ready as we look forward to opening up the facility to the public," explained Okumu.

Some of the works that are yet to be completed include ground lightening, visual aids and markings at the runway.

Okumu said the new terminal building will be able to handle 600 to 700 persons per hour, translating to two million traffic per annum.

This will surpass the current traffic of 300,000 and will see it accommodate big planes such as Boeing 767 and the 737 planes.

It was also allow airbus 310, which can carry up to 250 passengers to land in the lakeside town.

At the weekend, former Nigerian president Oleisugun Obasanjo tested the facility when he flew direct from Abuja to Kisumu international airport.

The former head of state was leading a powerful delegation from Nigeria on a two-day familiarisation tour of the Sh2 billion mechanised rice-farming ventures by the American-based Dominion group of companies.

"This was part of the test runs that we allowed to see how effective we are as we map the Kisumu international route," explained Okumu.

The new airport is likely to build the Nyanza economy coming as the region recovers from the rigors of post-poll violence and the subsequent global economic crunch.

Already, a number of investors are eyeing the town and are rushing to set up business in order to tap the export market.

Dismantle arrangement

A team of Norwegian investors has unveiled plans to put up a S4.1 million Tilapia fish-farming project and processing plant, which will be based in Nyando constituency.

The group hopes to produce enough fish for export to the Europe, Asia, and pacific and Caribbean countries with the anticipated opening of Kisumu international Airport.

Another Sh837 million project that will see to the harvesting and re-use of hyacinth isexpected to generate up to Sh7.6 billion a year. The project will be undertaken jointly by Kenya, US and Canada under the banner of Hyaquip.

The developments are part of effort that the area leaders have been making to woo investors back to the town, which suffered tremendous economic backlash following the 2007/08 post-election violence.

Kisumu airport expansion project, estimated to be worth Sh3 billion, begun on October 29, 2009 and was supposed to be complete in August this year.

But Nyanza leaders, led by Prime Minister Raila Odinga, asked for more funds to extend the runway, which delayed completion date.

Once opened, Kisumu International Airport will be among the top eight busiest regional airports in East Africa.

It will be elevated to international airport status, thereby joining the league of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Moi International Airport, Mombasa.

The airport is expected to create more than 30,000 jobs, fuel business growth and stir up East African economies by boosting bilateral trade.

Kisumu International Airport opened after expansion
The Standard (http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/InsidePage.php?id=2000042868&cid=4)
15 September 2011
The new Kisumu International Airport has officially began its operations after the completion of an expansion project which began three years ago.

All airline operators using the airport have shifted their operations to the new facility.

The new terminal building has been completed and all the markings done.

The building will handle 600 to 700 persons per hour, translating to two million traffic per year.

The length of the runway was also extended from the previous 2 kilometres to 3.3 kilometres.

Kisumu Airport manager Joseph Okumu told the standard that they were running series of test to ensure that systems and procedures were running efficiently.

He appealed to the airline operators to increase their flights to accommodate the increasing number of passengers.

He said, " we have no restrictions on which kind of plane we can accommodate as the facility is extremely spacious".

Kenya Airways plane touched down at newly completed airport grounds amid jubilation amongst the passengers.

National Assembly speaker Kenneth Marende , Nyanza provincial commissioner Francis Mutie , and Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa were amongst the first dignitaries to have a glimpse of the new facility.

While on a brief tour of the facility, Marende expressed his joy over the new facility and called upon the residents of region to utilize it.

Mutie said the Government would ensure security around the area is tightened as they expect an influx of tourists visiting the region.

Mutie said security will be beefed at the airport due to the high number of passengers expected.

Kenya Airways station manager Sammy Ndirangu said they were working on plans to increase more flights in the area.

The sh 3 billion expansion of the new aiport began three years ago and is expected to create new business opportunities in the region.

More tourists are also expected to flock the region after the ministry of tourism launched the western tourism circuit.

Tourism minister Najib Balala last month announced that his ministry would build an international conference centre alongside a new utalii college to cater for the expected tourists in the region.

I think they may be moving the airport to the more spacious side and think of fresh new structures. Plus the old terminal was so small, it looked like someone's house may be. May be they will use them as a police station for the airport or just as offices ,ay be for KRA or something.

You'll get wet, but only a bit. The apron is not that big (it's barely 160m from a remote stand to the terminal-side exit). And it doesn't really rain that much or get very cold in KSM anyway. So not having airbridges was a sensible decision.

You must be living the 2030 vision in 2011. Kenya is NOT and will not spend that kinda money on just a small scale fishing venture. Yes, the Kisumu port is important in the fish trade (locally),.... but I gotta ask, do you honestly think it's economically viable? The rich western states can afford a venture of the same magnitude on town by town or city by city basis. Kenya/African states can't!
An airport can only attain 'International' status if it caters to international flights set by ICAO standards OR based on it's strategic geographical location.
No, Kisumu airport cannot just be used for exports coming out of that region alone. Eldoret airport cannot just be used for products emanating from that region alone either. It's much cheaper to build a reliable road network to link the towns to already recognized hub cities than to build an airport in each.
P.S Eldoret has what we call a white elephant. Moi wasted taxpayers money building a useless airport that nobody uses to this day. He built it to placate his KANU supporters. Disheartening to know that some of them still linger around.

Why not KaiserSoze? It is all possible, it would be possible if we got more serious earlier. We'd be further ahead, but even now, are we making big strides forward? I'd say not much, because many issues even just of leadership and governance still bog us down a lot. On the issue of the airport, I think you have to build a facility first and then it can be classified and useable, and if you build a bad or poor quality one people will not want to use it, while if you build a great facility many people will like it. Its position geographically also has to make economic sense. I'm saying that now that we have both Eldoret and Kisumu airport already we should look for great ways to make them both achieve optimal performance levels and having a super quality facility with requisite aspects, like cargo facilities, is a first step towards great performance. No point in running them down. Next, I believe is that we all have to big dreamers and people who follow through our dreams to make them a reality for the benefit of us all as kenyans whichever part of the country we may be!!

^^ Kinda sad that Kenya spent a fortune building Eldoret airport that has practically been reduced to a footnote in the Kenyan aviation industry. But it's a good thing that efforts are being put into place to at least make Kisumu airport commercially viable. Here's to hoping that investors & foreign commercial airlines come into play and make it a target city. That will create jobs in that part of the country and stem the tide in the ever increasing migration to Nairobi.

So are they doing the cargo terminal along with the other projects like parallel runway and apron in the phase 2 project? Kwa kweli we need better airports indeed for our country to move forward. We need roads to connect the airports and railways to connect sea ports and towns. Picture you taking a train to Egypt for example instead of flying there for example, in Europe something like that is possible and in Africa it can be done. But we must start in each of our countries!!

Don't be, both JKIA and MSA airports are earmarked for expansion and modernization. It all comes down to construction funding. KAA is adhering to the government's current trend of encouraging public-private joint ventures in accomplishing infrastructure projects rather than fully finance the expensive projects, which in a sense reduces the country's purchasing power which in turn affects her purchasing power & credit rating. Remember that the Somali piracy problem has nearly crippled the tourist sea cruise business at the coast. That expansion at MSA is on a conditional basis.

You are absolutely right. What I meant was that the volume in that region right now hardly warrants two international airports. At some point in the future I'm sure having both those airports will be really awesome. But spending a fortune to prop up an airport the size of EDL is quite silly considering the volume of cargo that goes through there.

So MSA will have a double runway and an upgraded or new terminal building

That has been the general idea for years... but, building a second runway at Mombasa's Intl airport is a stretch at this point with the greatly reduced tourist traffic & pirate activity at the Indian Ocean. At the moment, JKIA is the only airport that can justifiably demand a second runway.
MSA had a somewhat ultramodern executive lounge aimed at attracting foreign wealthy travellers, but we all know hat happened later.

From MSA wikipage:

Moi International Airport serves the city of Mombasa and surrounding communities. It is the second-largest and second-busiest airport in Kenya, behind Jomo Kenyatta International Airport located in the capital city of Nairobi. Mombasa Airport is operated by Kenya Airports Authority. The airport was named after former Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi during his tenure.
Situated at 61 metres (200 ft) above sea level,[2] the airport has two runways: (a) Runway 1 measures 3,350 metres (10,990 ft) in length and (b) Runway 2 measures 1,260 metres (4,130 ft) in length.[3] Runway 1 is also known as Runway 03/21, while Runway 2 is also known as Runway 15/33. Runway 1 is equipped with an ILS (Instrument Landing System).

So that means the second shorter runway will not be expanded any time soon till the proposed Lamu airport gets built. It's a long way off.

There is no room the expand the second runway since it used mainly by the airforce.. So we would be required to construct a new runway parallel to the current one so we could be able to meet the demand in the near future

Air bridges? In Kisumu? People that fly into Kisumu currently don't wear $2K Armani business suits, they don khakis for safaris. Getting drenched is part of their paid experience of Nyanza travel. Business travelers are highly encouraged to buy umbrellas.

Not quite so my friend. It may seem like it, but that's an urban legend.
There are roughly 14,951 airports in the US. 5,000 have paved runways and 376 have regularly scheduled airline service. The amount of International airports out of the total airports is about 1,000. Although there are 1,000 airports with the international title, only a handful actually have international flights. The other airports earn their international title from Custom officials. Most of these airports are municipal airports that serve light aircrafts (like Wilson in Nairobi or Lokichar airport).
Air bridges are a reserve for heavy commercial airports. They cost a lot of money to build, operate & maintain. Hence, airport fees are a determinant factor to having them. Building even a single air bridge in a small airport is not cost effective. It's why Kisumu Intl Airport doesn't have one.

da_scotty
April 6th, 2013, 02:52 PM
That's what I meant?

Because we where talking about airports like kisumu, the same 376 airports you are talking about (with sceduled national/international services).

My point was, that most airports with scheduled services (even if its American Eagle or Delta Connection) have air bridges. Unlike Europe (and Kisumu) where boarding a scheduled service by foot is much more common practice.

Guys, if you've never been to this airport, you need to go and see.

It's small, modern and very intimate. It's just right!

Once you're here, you'll hate big airports.
