This looks very similar to the housing estates put up in communist block countries in Eastern Europe and Russia. Even the grey weather and air pollution haze matches perfectly.
I believe this Nyayo Embakasi Estate idea originated from Romania whose communist era president was a good friend of former president Moi.

Of all estates in Nairobi, Nyayo ranks as one of my favorites. I love everything about it apart from the distance from the CBD. I guess thats one thing Moi did right.

The Ministry of Energy has joined the bandwagon of State departments seeking to put up its own building at a time when Treasury is trimming down government expenditure.

The ministry is planning to put up a new multi-storey headquarters to house affiliated parastatals but members of parliament and analysts say this is yet another project that exposes the extravagance in the coalition government.

“We have engineers and senior officers who have no offices to sit in ... we are congested,” said the Energy Permanent Secretary Patrick Nyoike.

The ministry says it intends to house its six parastatals under one roof in the new building to be located at Nairobi’s South C estate at a cost of Sh450 million over the first year.

“It will comprise mainly of office space, laboratories, conference rooms, parking lots and related electrical and mechanical works” says the ministry in a public announcement calling for consultants interested in managing the construction tender.

The parastatals to be housed in the proposed headquarters include the National Oil Corporation of Kenya, Electricity Regulatory Company, Geothermal Development Company, Energy Tribunal, Kenya Electricity Transmission Company and the Rural Electricity Authority.

Electricity generator KenGen and power distributor Kenya Power and Lighting Company already have their own headquarters.

Currently the ministry is housed at Nyayo House where it occupies four floors.

“This is not a prudent exercise, it doesn’t make much financial sense because there are much more critical issues that the government could do instead of planning to put up new buildings in town” says Budalangi MP Mr Ababu Namwamba.

Attempts to get the detailed cost of the proposed building from the ministry’s headquarters proved futile as officials said publishing the cost would jeopardize the tendering process.

The ministry has asked consultants interested in offering architectural, quantity survey, electrical, mechanical and structural engineering services to tender but Mr Namwamba says the government should use its internal capacity to carry out such works.

In a public announcement in the media, the ministry of Energy says it has started the process of engaging the services of a consortium of consultant firms that will carry out the exercise of preparing the layout and design options for the proposed headquarters.

Why does this never surprise.With very few exceptions,all towns and cities here have this one problem-they never fix the areas btw their properties and the street.The paved side walks are almost non existent and 95% of all african cities you'll see browny streets which is soil/trash reaching the tarmacked areas,which in turn clog drains.This one actually has rocks and looks tacky with a world class real estate next to it.A world class lawn would be very inviting to this property.Even uhuru park pics show lots of brown areas with easily identified foot tracks instead of a healthy green park.
The reason why other cities are always cleaner is because theres no loose soil reaching the tarmack,streets are swept and well painted (as opposed to always faded lane markings here),buildings are well maintaned and/or painted,garbage is properly disposed of and there's paved sidewalks and/or well maintained healthy gardens at the property's edge and the streets which in turn help keep cleaning costs low.Some cities,well aware that its hard to do all that maintenance,actually reward property owners with an official city plaque reading"Beautification award,city of ......" in the hope others will emulate it,a practice nairobi would do well to adopt.They have done well in the city center for sure,but they can not do it all alone.
If nairobi,as desired, hopes to be a world class city it will have to get everyone onboard with strict rules(very hard in a country of impunity)The owners of rundown buildings on river rd,kikomba,eastleigh and even biashara st and moi ave will have to be leaned on hard michuki style.Old but really well kept blocks in Kiev,Lyiv and Turkey should be an example as the grime in eastleigh is an eyesore.Well designed,maintained,widened and well lit streets with easyflow traffic would help as investors will not come to a gridlocked,potholed,grimey and dirty city.

You are right, my guess is that we are yet to fully embrace the culture of 'lawn keeping.' Look at it this way when we talk about most private properties in Kenya what comes into mind is a "fence" to fend off "intruders" for some security this and that in that case the space outside a given premises to this regard belongs to the respective City|Town Councils, and its their duty keep it neat I am only accountable to my sorrounding kind of attitude. In the west(mostly) a property however how nice and luxurious might end up not getting the right price if the lawn is unkempt the notion of "fencing" does nor arise alot of times(maybe coz of security), to them its all about lawn mowing and getting the right finish both inside the house as in the floor and outside the compound.

I find it so hard to believe how the economy is only growing around 5%, yet so much construction, and so many industries are popping up. I mean unless this boom is just limited to Nairobi. It makes me curious.

It could be because of the drought that hit the agricultural sector last year.Agriculture forms a big chunk of the economy and when production levels go down,price of food because high leading to high inflation,thus slowing the momentum of the economy.

ditto, We still rely heavily on agriculture. Once the diversification promised by Vision 2030 materialises, we should be better able to absord this shocks

Well the construction boom is mainly restricted to urban areas (IMO) ,and higher crop yields tend to have a larger effect on the agricultural cities/ areas. Much of rural Kenya is still not as dynamic as the big cities so this brings down the growth rate.

Kenya's growth this year willl be around 5.4%.This is actu8ally very good compared to last year's 2.6% percent.Thats a major jump of about 3%.This is largely due to improved weather conditions which lead to good food production that decreased inflation.But now that agriculture has been sorted out,there are more shocks to the economy,such as rising fuel prices.This ttime Kenyans can get food easily,but still at high prices because the cost of transportation has skyrocketed.The bloated civil service is not helping much either.Remember this is a coalition government of 40 ministers and 80 assistant ministers plus PS's.

Therefore you find that a good percentage of the money collected by KRA goes back to paying government officials.

A growth rate of 5.4% with such a huge wage bill is indeed incredible.Compare that to 2007 before the elections.Kenya's growth rate was at 7%,with a lean cabinet of about 24 ministers.Fuel prices were good,and agriculture was doing well.

But i also think kenya's growth will hit 10% in 2013(if all goes well in the political scene).Tourism numbers are at an all time high,we have a new constitution that guarantees equitable distribution of wealth in the counties and a growing telecoms,industrial and manufacturing sector.

I wish we could diversify our agriculture to focus also on drought-resistant crops. The cyclical drought/famine heavily undermines the economy.

Ethiopia is hitting 10% plus in recent years.This may be due to the infrastructure investments they have done in recent years.There is a brighter side of Kenya with new constitution ans the investment in infrastructure we are seeing recently.Finishing traffic jams may unlock something else good.

I believe looks could be deceiving, About the scintillating real estate markets in Kenya - The question is what sector of the populace is it impacting is it the well to do whose output are already factored in or the down to earth whose economies doesn't add up. Worst still the industrial and service economies are still largely just accountable to a small portion of overall population. Kenya willl need phenominal growths in these status-quo-sectors so as to offset the balance to move the country out of poverty.

The diaspora is instrumental to Kenya's growth since this is the only avenue at the moment where new monies for the economy is sought, Remember that Kenya hardly attracts any serious FDI(Coz of corruption, 'poor infrastructure' or lack of business friendly enviroinment), infact we are down to 3rd behind TZ and Ug in the region. Again the rate of population increase is increasingly becoming unsustainable in lieu of the mearger growth rate that can't keep up. Agricultural(#1 sector) output pendulum is always swinging erraticly, with no specific direction in stability of crop production since the country is solely dependent on unpredictable rains and of course POLITICS.

Guys,there is a business oportunity which has come up as a result of lack of storage space in Dubai and China.Guys who have godownns are striking deals with suppliers to pump stuff into the godowns free of charge.Then distribution can be done from there.Those who have business instincts be on the lookout..is clean money.

Thats Green Park, A housing development in Athi river with more than 1000 housing units. Glad to see its finally complete (this project had been posted before SSC-Kenya section existed though I can't seem to find it)...and of course glad to see that they are finally expanding the dual carriageway towards the Machakos turnoff.:)

I'm smelling a housing boom here in future.

I am pleasantly surprised that they are making that section of Mombasa road a dual way. Greenpark my future home in Kenya glad I made the investment when I did!

sorry about the nyama choma, i had to brag alittle bit. hahaha. nways, the namanga interchange is complete, it is huge and looks very nice. i got a video of it that i will upload in due time. it has two tunnels which i thought was really cool

the dual carriage as far as i saw will go up to athi river. mombasa road up to machakos junction has been recarpeted but i didnt see any signs that it will be made a dual carriage. i must admit i was disappointed by the apparent lack of such plans.
