Lucky you, Kenguy is the picture below your neighbourhood!

I grew up on a small farm near town, more or less on the edge of town. I took the last two pics I posted at the bottom of the farm. Though at the rate Nyeri has been growing these last few years, the farmland surrounding the town is slowly disappearing.

Nyeri is the Provincial Headquarters and biggest town of Central Province. The town is situated about 150 km (a two hour drive) north of the capital Nairobi ,It is nessled in between Mt Kenya and the Aberdares, lying just east of the Aberdare Mountains. The Nyeri area is very fertile and is the center of Kenya’s coffee industry. Tourists are most likely to see Nyeri on their way to Aberdare National Park. The town has many accommodations and places to eat.

Transport
Nyeri is served by a reasonably well maintained tarmac road network connecting it to Nairobi ,Nakuru , Nanyuki , Othaya and other surrounding towns.

Most transportation of cargo to and from Nyeri is by road, though the town has a largely underutilized railway station at Kiganjo (about five kilometers out of town towards Nanyuki) on the branchline of the railway from Nairobi to Nanyuki ,and an Airstrip at Mweiga (about 10 Kilometers out of Town towards Nakuru).

The main mode of public passenger transport to, from and within Nyeri is by way of fourteen seater minibus taxis (matatus), though un-metered (but inexpensive)saloon car taxis are also widely used within the town.

Education
The town has one universityKimathi University College of Technolog, which was recently upgraded from a technical college.

The national state Police Training College is also situated in the town. There is also a Medical Training College, a government nursing school, two polytechnic colleges, and several private and public secondary and primary schools.

The catholic church also runs a number of schools and colleges.
Various Kenyan public universities and institutes have satellite campuses within the town

Tourism
Nyeri, being an unpolluted country town with a friendly population and numerous serene quiet areas, is a good and popular destination for relaxation, business, entertainment, educational, and cultural tourism.

Its pubs offer lively entertainment, the farms in and around it offer pristine scenery, and the grave of the scouting Movement's founder, Lord Robert Baden powell and his paxtu cottage are popular attractions.

The Italian War Memorial Chapel, located at Mathari, is a beautiful attraction. It was built in honor of the fallen Italian soldiers and their African recruits from the Second World War. It is used not for regular worship, but only to celebrate a special mass on every September 2nd, the official All Souls Day according to the Roman Catholic Church, in memory of the fallen soldiers. It has beautifully manicured lawns and flowerbeds. On the entire walling of the main church building are memorials for many tens of Italian servicemen who died in the war.

Mount Kenya-The most imposing landmark around Nyeri is,Mount kenya and starting from about twenty kilometers out of town is the Mt. Kenya National Park. Mt.Kenya is an imposing extinct volcano lying strategically astride the Equator which rises to an imposing height of 17058 ft.

The Aberdares-The National Park lies 10,000ft contour with some forest and scrub at lower altitude in the 'salient' area near Nyeri with the boundary running down to the 7000ft contour. The park is famous for freedom fighter hide outs including the Kimathi hideouts, the Mau-Mau caves, and the Kimathi “post office” where agents used to drop messages for Mau Mau fighters.

The third and current president of Kenya. Kibaki was previously Vice President (1978–88). He also held several other cabinet positions, including a widely acclaimed stint as Minister for Finance (1969 - 1981), Minister for Home Affairs (1982–88) and Minister for Health (1988–91).

He then served as an opposition Member of Parliament from 1991 up to his election as Kenya's third president in 2002.

He was sworn in on 30 December 2007 for his second term as president after controversially emerging winner of a bitterly contested election that was marked by accusations of fraud and widespread irregularities that led to civil unrest.

Thats true to a large extent following a directive from a former PC for all pubs to close by a certain hour. Though I understand the business community is working towards lifting this artificial ban.

Statue of Gikuyu and Mumbi.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3989430408_de469c18e7_b.jpg

Kikuyu legends have it that in the beginning, a man called Gikuyu and his wife called Mireia (Mumbi) were placed on Mũkũrwe wa Nyagathanga in present day Murang'a District by God, Mwene Nyaga or Ngai. It was said that they were placed near the Mugumo or Fig tree upon the slopes of the mountain. They gave birth to Nine daughters named, Wanjiku, Wanjirũ, Wangeci, Wambũi, Wangari, Wacera, Waithera, Wairimũ and Wangũi. It so happened that when they were grown up, they met nine young men from a distant land, (ostensibly Maasai) who married the girls and from whom the Kikuyu nation arose. A popular myth claims that when Kikuyu's daughters came of marrying age, Kikuyu prayed to Mwene Nyaga to provide husbands for their daughters whom he duly provided by a fig tree.

Wow,nyeri rocks.I've never set foot in nyeri but i love what i see.The new developments look good and i can say with a few improvements like paving areas of dust in cbd or better drainage, gardens to make it even cleaner, making landlords improve some buildings and more streetlighting this town's quality of life is up and up.

Totally agree with you. I remember a time when nothing new ever got built in this town, when smooth tarmac roads and streetlights were almost non existent. Things are looking up just like in much of Kenya at the moment. :)

Nyeri has a couple of supermarkets equivalent to that one like Maathai and Samrat supermarkets. Though I'm still waiting for the big retail giants to set up shop in Nyeri. Nakumatt are planning to open a store here soon.

I think Nyeri is the only major town in the Mount Kenya region without a major retail store. Embu has an Uchumi hypermarket, Meru and Nanyuki both have malls with Nakumatt as the anchor store. Its only Nyeri that's left out.

Yes, the road to Sagana does pass through Muranga connecting it to the Nyeri-Nairobi highway (A2). Its roughly 70-85 kms to Nyeri though they are building a brand new tarmac road connecting Sagana to Nyeri though Mukurueini at the moment which will make the distance even shorter.

Since age 11? I guess that must have been a very long time ago.

Lol. Sagana never changes...apart from a building or two. Though there is a new fruit processing plant and the Sagana power station has been expanded in recent years.

As for roads, you should go to some parts of Meru where almost all roads have tarmac. If this goes on, I can only imagine how the roads network will be like countrywide.

Guys, don't you think it's time the Administration police's residential area(about a quarter of CBD) and(maybe) Kenya police got relocated from Nyeri's CBD to facilitate the growth of the town. all I hear from potential investors is that Nyeri town has no building space as well as office space. KISII once an uncommon term to hear has become the place to be and has had a mad rush for investors.^^^^

My thoughts exactly. The police quarters as well as that huge chunk of land on Gakere road that belongs to the Kenya police. I'd also suggest the same for the Telkom/Posta Kenya residential quarters on Kimathi way.

If I had a chance, I'd put up a major mall on Gakere road where the empty police land is located and convert the residential quarters into commercial property after adding some streets.:)

Things are looking up. Just like in the rest of Kenya ATM. Coffee prices have gone up (that's a big deal here) as well as other agricultural activities and there is alot of cash coming in from students in universities that have their campuses around town. Tourism also seems to have picked up. :)

No malls yet. One was proposed at the present location of the White Rhino hotel with Nakumatt as the anchor store. However, the place is gazetted as a historical site so those plans got shelved.

Its really wierd. Nyeri may be the only major urban centre in Kenya without any of the major retail chain stores yet there is clearly a market for such stores.
Witimire is a slum area within the municipality. Nyeri does have its fair share of poverty, just like many places in the country.

White Rhino Hotel

This hotel was Nyeri's first hotel, situated at the corner of Kanisa road and Kenyatta way in the CBD. It was established a few years after Nyeri was founded in 1902 and was the preferred spot for settlers in the Mt Kenya region to socialize back in the colonial days. Just like Nairobi grew around the Norfolk hotel, Nyeri grew around the White Rhino hotel.

It was recently refurbished and it can now rival any of the top restaurants in Kenya. I must apologize in advance since my pics cannot do justice to the place. It's really nice.

Nyeri still has a long way to go before it attains city status going by its population.

Got this from wikipedia.

The town's population as at 2010 according to the 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census was 119,273 with 36,412 households.

That new law targets larger urban areas like Nakuru and Eldoret which will join the other three cities (Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu). Nyeri will most likely attain city status in a decade or so if growth continues as it is today.

You may have a point. I also wonder if they included people in the new estates or it was just the old traditional estates that border the CBD that were considered in determining the population.

I hear Nyeri is a dead town at night. No night life at all!!! Is this true or has this changed?

Found an interesting article on Nyeri's nightlife.

Former Central PC Peter Raburu was a deeply religious man. He ordered the closure of all bars before 8pm in a bid to tackle crime and immorality in Nyeri Town.

Increased crime and the lack of proper lighting were major reasons that led to enforcement of the curfew.

As a result Nyeri was called "the town that literally sleeps after dusk."
It became normal for all businesses to close immediately after 6pm. And to reinforce his point, Mr Raburu commissioned a billboard reading 'Central for God' on one side and with the Ten Commandments on the other.

Its presence was in meant to emphasise that the town would be governed by rules different from those the residents were used to. And the combination all these measures brought nightlife in Nyeri to its knees.

In spite of being the provincial headquarters for Central, the 24-hour economy remains largely unexploited. Efforts to revive it are burgeoning however, with several restaurants and hotels now operating after 11pm.

Businessmen and women, residents, the administration and the town council have all agreed that night life should be revived. And as a symbol of that, the 'Central for God' billboard has been destroyed by vandals.

It signals the end of the Raburu era.

"We are in discussion with various stakeholders now that Gakere Road is lit to kick off night business, said Nyeri mayor Edward Mutero, "however security will have to be enhanced further."

Kimathi Street is also now lit and various entertainment spots are catering for an increasing number of revellers. They include the recently refurbished White Rhino Hotel and the Banana Leaf restaurant as well as other places throughout the town.

Businesses are now working after 9pm as security has been enhanced through street lighting and increased police patrols.

Groups like Artists for Contemporary Theatre and Roso la Salsa are set to spice up night life in the town. Started last year, the Artists for Contemporary Theatre is made up of Nyeri residents and has attracted students from the ever increasing number of colleges.

Roso la Salsa, a salsa dance group formed only a few months ago, has attracted many followers. The group wants to integrate various cultures in entertainment besides engaging youths in fruitful activities.

Nightlife in the town is now near back to normal. Today, snooping around Nyeri town on a weekend evening, one gets the feeling that serious boozing, rather than revelling, is the main pastime.

To confirm this, one only has to pop into the crowded bars at the Batian and Maru hotels, both pioneers in the hospitality industry, on any weekday evening.

And you can bet the frenzied imbibing sessions get more intense over the weekend. Not surprisingly, the majority of guests in such joints are heavily made-up women, with their male counterparts thoroughly outnumbered.

There are more relaxing places in the town though, and the dedicated reveller will find enough space to do his thing at top night spots like Makutiland and the Banana Leaf hotel, both on Karatina Road.

Alternatively, one might want to check out the Impala Konnect Club on Kanisa Road. As for real nyama choma gurus, the places to make a beeline to include Kungu Maitu and Kimingi eating joints on Kimathi Way, as well as Unity Paradise near the Ruring'u stadium.

Also worth sampling is the usually crowded and aptly named Nyama Choma Village on Gakere Road. And if you have fairly deep pockets, there is always some action at the refurbished White Rhino Hotel, as well as at the Green Hills Hotel in the town's outskirts.

The same applies to the numerous tourist resorts scattered around Nyeri County. If you can afford the entry or membership fees, that is.

^^

They finished this project. I love how the new lobby looks. They collected a bunch of pictures taken in the late 19th century and early 20th century showing how the local people lived back then. It's almost like a small picture gallery.

Two university campuses next to each other, this will be interesting to watch given the way hostels are popping up around Kimathi Uni. I see a new construction belt forming in the next few years between Garden estate and Hillcourt and Kimathi along the road to Mweiga (B5).

Nyeri is slowly turning into a university town. Almost all the major universities in Kenya have a campus there and students are increasingly driving the towns economy.

 Nakumatt's finally here. They 've fenced (actually ironsheeted) the area round their said piece of land(used to be KBL 's deport; area next to Homeage). The site is as big as to accmdte a mall as big as Nanyuki's.There is a row though btwn them and Taxi owners who claim to have been "thrown out" of the land they have occupied for a long time.

Wow! That's smack in the middle of downtown Nyeri. Talk about a perfect location for business. Its on Nyeri's busiest street (Gakere road), Next to the busiest bus/matatu terminus. Anyone coming in from Nairobi by public means will definitely have to visit it. :)

One problem though. Driving or getting parking space on Gakere road is a real headache. Now throw in a busy mall on that road. We might start seeing major traffic jams not only on Gakere but on every other nearby road from Kimathi way to Temple road.

I have actually uploaded some photos on my facebook page but am having trouble posting them here.

Just try uploading your photos on a picture hosting site like http://www.flickr.com then use the pic's URL to post them here.

Thanx for the update. Might be visiting Nyeri sometime soon. :)
