About the name, what you said is correct. Buses, newspapers etc. mention the name of the place as Kalathipady. But on K.K Road (NH 220), the nameboard shows the name of the place as 'Kalathilpady' in both malayalam and English. For the ease of saying, people pronounce it as Kalathipady, I think.
Kalathil+pady = Kalathilpady ---> Kalathipady.

Tail piece: Can anyone guess what makes Kalathilpady one of the main Residential areas in Kottayam?
Kalathilpady and the nearby areas -Kanjikkuzhy and Vadavathoor host a 'good' no: of 'very good' CBSE, state and ICSE schools. One of the famous schools is 'Pallikkoodam' run by none other than, the one and only 'Mary Roy', mother of the famous writer Arundathi Roy.:)
