piles July 29th, 2009, 08:27 AM http://www.carisbrook.org.nz/index.html
The Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza will be New Zealand's largest indoor arena with the capacity for more than 30,000 avid fans.
The multipurpose, fully-roofed venue will be capable of hosting a wide range of music, entertainment, cultural and sporting events.
Planned for completion by 2011, construction is already underway on site.
Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza is set to become the southern showcase for passion and excitement.

The plan is to have the stadium completed in time for the Rugby World Cup in September 2011, work started at the end of June. If the stadium is not completed in time, Dunedin's games will be held at the aging Carisbrook as pictured below.

piles July 29th, 2009, 09:01 AM ^^ Thanks Bing! Off topic, but is that the Silverdome Wrestlemania III crowd in your avatar?
SSE July 29th, 2009, 11:51 AM Better have a high roof if South Africa are going to play any games there. Francois Steyn will just see it as a challenge for his right boot!
Looks a cool stadium though. I've always thought Carisbrook was a great old ground, nice to see it being replaced with something equally unique.
aus16 July 29th, 2009, 12:32 PM i think this design is monumental but the only problem i have with it is that it appears that there is no way they can add seats to it
piles July 29th, 2009, 12:37 PM ^^ Yeah, adding extra seating would be tricky, but Dunedin does only have a population of 120,000 odd.
NMAISTER007 July 29th, 2009, 03:03 PM So this will also be a football stadium? Not just a rugby stadium?
piles July 29th, 2009, 03:17 PM Yep, will be fine for all rectangle field sports.
CharlieP July 29th, 2009, 06:05 PM So this will also be a football stadium? Not just a rugby stadium?
You can fit a soccer pitch in any international rugby stadium, but I can't see it being used for soccer much, if at all.
Benn July 29th, 2009, 08:50 PM That is pretty fantastic, I really like the modular end idea for concert stage and basketball use. Its nice to keep big venues in use year round.

I can't really imagine any situation where that will really be necessary.

This stadium will seat nearly 1/4th of the city of Dunedin.
South Island is a fairly sparsely-populated place.

NZ Warriors in the NRL has indicated a willingness to play exhibition games; so too has the Wellington Phoenix, NZ's soccer team in Australia's A League. Main sporting use is for the Highlanders Super 14 rugby franchise and the Otago provincial rugby team in the Air NZ Cup (as well as international rugby tests)...

According to the Otago Daily Times the lowest part of the roof will be 30 metres and the highest part 35 metres. The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has a roof height of 33 metres.
darkhorse09 August 8th, 2009, 03:33 AM This will be an awesome indoor stadium once completed. The first real indoor arena 30k stadium in NZ. Good on Dunedin for it's vision. Maybe it should be called Hydroponic Arena - where history will be made and grown!! :)

No1_Saint November 29th, 2009, 01:37 PM It has a roof and can therefore double up as an exhibition centre, indoor arena. The roof provides an array of options.
It is unusable as an exhibition space. Grass in those types of environments are notoriously difficult to maintain all season. You just have to look at Etihad stadium in Melbourne to see the issues. Large levels of foot traffic on there outside the sports traffic could be highly damaging.
Even with the translucent roof, there are issues surrounding air flow and watering. The only successful indoor pitches are fully retractable like the Sapporo Dome in Japan.

Absolutely right:yes: it's a multi purpose arena more than being a football stadium...i remember reading during that pathetic debate some loser saying quote: "It'll just be a shine to rugby" that more or less describes the intelligence of the that anti-stadium lot:nuts: well done Dunedin:applause: for having the vision in building what will be NZ's best stadium by far:okay: and for standing up to that unbelievably narrow minded lobby group:crazy2:...which sadly NZ seems to be cursed with an over supply of.

Dunedin; wish a moderater would fix the spelling mistake - ok Dunedin's only a little place of 123,000 but it's nice to get the name right. Stadium is looking quite impressive and on track to open in August 2011.
Irish Blood English Heart August 3rd, 2010, 12:48 AM Progress looks good but what is the feeling as to whether this will be completed in time for the RWC? Noticed that the official site still has the old stadium (is it Carrisbrook) listed as the stadium for Dunedin.

KiwiRob September 24th, 2010, 09:05 AM Why does everyone dislike Lancaster/AMI so much?
It's ugly, none of the stands match, all the seating is at different angles, the roof on the Hadlee Stand looks unfinished, you have massive gaps between each stand and it's another one of those stupid rugby cricket compromise grounds which are two small for cricket and too big for rugby. Like Eden Park it's a cheap and nasty hash up, I can't understand why anyone likes either stadium, in this day and age neither are good enough.

I think we've all established that it was a poor decision locating the stadium at Eden Park.
However, the finished product that we have seen thus far, is quite pleasing given the renders we were initially exposed to.
Its certainly no longer an embarrassment and definitely not a bag of shite.
There is nothing the IRB can do about it apart from what has already been done i.e. awarding the 2015 and 2019 events to countries with large stadia, and an array of modern venues.

 Hardly my gold (that would be a 11/10), I give Eden Park a 6/10 and a bag of shit 0/10 .... now what would we do with stadiums as large as the one's that you have shown us ? It should be quite evident that New Zealand places it's citizens first and a temporary sporting event fourth.
You are also quick to forget that we are a country of 1.4 million people and Auckland only has 1.4 million people. Why would we be so stupid as to burden ourselves with a white elephant ? I am one of the first to agree that Eden Park is no architectural wonder but it is a HUGE improvement on what we had.
Besides the stadium, the city will be left with a greater legacy which we as citizens can use every minute of every day - unlike some stadium. Your priorities are seriously screwed up mate. We will just have to agree to disagree on this one

No way should Eden Park be rated along side Stade De France, Stadium Aus, or Twickhenham.
Yes eden park looks alot better with its upgrade, but would never compare it along side those world class stadiums.

and gosh.. isn't it great how a country that's half the size of london, with shit stadiums has managed to be able to host the tournament - ahead of countries with much better stadiums
shit infrastructure perhaps. excellent negotiating skills though.
as for how eden park will look at world cup time? well you don't see the outside of a stadium on the tv when the game is being played. 99% of people don't actually care what it looks like, as long as it's facilities are world class, the seats are comfortable and they get a good view. in this respect, eden park will probably be superior to most of the stadiums you listed above (especially stadium "no atmosphere" australia).

gorgu October 30th, 2010, 06:52 AM and gosh.. isn't it great how a country that's half the size of london, with shit stadiums has managed to be able to host the tournament - ahead of countries with much better stadiums
shit infrastructure perhaps. excellent negotiating skills though.
as for how eden park will look at world cup time? well you don't see the outside of a stadium on the tv when the game is being played. 99% of people don't actually care what it looks like, as long as it's facilities are world class, the seats are comfortable and they get a good view. in this respect, eden park will probably be superior to most of the stadiums you listed above (especially stadium "no atmosphere" australia).
you miss my point, I was comparing the venue as a RWC final venue and my original complaint if you take the time to read back there was that where Auckland has spectacularly failed in building a worthy stadium Dunedin has succeeded spectacularly in delivering a stadium worthy of the tournament.
Anyway, I doubt it came down to negotiating skills really, the tournament was meant to go to Japan but i think there was a realisation after the outright success of France it was a safe time to take the tournament to a downsized event and probably the last time NZ will get a chance to host it. The event is going from strength to strength and will probably be too big for NZ to host on its own in the future.
Also I think you mean the population is half the size of London and not the actual country itself ;-)

UglyBob November 27th, 2010, 09:40 PM Looks very cheap tbh.
Yeah, it's not the most extravagant design. The total design and construction cost is NZ$200m so it is a cheap stadium by any standards but I think it will scrub up reasonably well once finished.
Bear in mind that the NZ government has only contributed $15m toward construction with $130m through the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Regional Council (the rest largely comes from private sector sponsorship and seating package sales). All this for a city with a population of 120,000 supporting an additional 80,000 regional population in a country of 4 million. NZ is never going to build mega stadia.

Don't agree i think it is a super stadium, built by a bold council more adventurous than Auckland, Christchurch AND Wellington.

I'm in full agreement - it's great to see a roofed stadium that doesn't conform to the normal "wrap around bowl" that you get in other stadiums. Don't get me wrong the likes of Veltins Arena are great but its nice to see the separate four stands within the full cover of the roof. Certainly the one stadium for next years World Cup that i'm really looking forward to seeing completed

No problems so far, but they have only opened the stadium just before the RWC so they have'nt been really tested. The football season has just started and the rugby will be starting from next year February. They use a Desso GrassMaster surface which is a natural playing surface combined with artificial fibres. This allows the grass to cope with a shorter rest period and is popular overseas, especially in the Premier League.
If you look at the last picture, you will see that there are gaps in the corners of the stadium, which gives enough air movement. And because of the roofing material (EFTE) the pitch gets enough sunlight.

Ok. I`m just thinking that if they pull this off and it works, which i hope it does, it could be somewhat of a revolution. At least here in Scandinavia where we have tough winters with lots of snow and low temperatures this could be a way to have grass pitches all year around. But of course it`s as allways a question of money, and if memory serves me correct, this stadium wasnt exactly cheap...

The Dunedin Stadium costed NZ $198.3 million (that includes land purchases of NZ $32.5million).
Eden Park, Auckland upgrade costed NZ $256 million, just for an increased capacity of 2,500 more seats.
Here's something about the cost of the roof from the stadium website:
Cost-effective — up to 70% cheaper to install vs. glass, and it transmits more light and heat than glass (resulting in up to 30% less energy costs)
http://www.forsythbarrstadium.co.nz/stadium/construction
The enclosed roof and steep stands makes it loud too so the fans like it; even in NZ where we have no specific support groups or ultras
