I think white is quite well in blending with the surrounding BB area. What kind of color you have in mind? Don't you think that having a different color will make that area kinda like a circus.

BB Park Roof Canopy

Design Features:
The project consist of a huge semi-enclosed canopy (1,080 sq.m.) covering a public plaza, that will contribute towards "place-making" in the city of Kuala Lumpur. The plaza will contain a number of F&B outlets and public multi-use spaces that shall become a destination for local and overseas tourists to enjoy the local cuisine , tropical environment and
culture of Malaysia. It is also a place for the public to aggregate.

The large canopy has secondary layers or "leaves" of roofing which are overlapped to permit cross-ventilation. "Mixed-mode" bioclimatic devices such as overhead fans and demister fans are used to improve conditions of comfort and to keep users below cool. At night, super-bright lights may be used to give the effect of turning night-into-day making the place a 24- hour space.

The structural steel columns support the roof and the multi-media screens below. The place will be unique and one of its kind found anywhere in the world.

Summary of features:
?
The roof as a "tropical umbrella", encloses the spaces below for multi-use activities giving partial protection from external weather conditions.
?
The umbrella also provides a covered pedestrian thoroughfare from Jalan Bukit Bintang to Low Yat Plaza at the rear.
?
The umbrella serves as a focus for the community. The umbrella's height gives it added prominence as a landmark structure in the precinct.
?
The umbrella serves as a focus for the community. The umbrella's height gives it added prominence as a landmark structure in the precinct.
?
The umbrella has a multi-layered overlapping roof form. Ventilation louvres and openable sliding roof panels enables cooling of the spaces below the roof, preventing heat build-up during the day.
?
Under the umbrella will be various mixed-mode bioclimatic devices to keep the users cool such as the use of demister fans. Water features and landscaping further improves the comfort level of the users.
?
The roof construction is a steel frame with metal deck and polycarbonate skylights.

There is this very strange thing between my cousin and his friends. I used to drive em out for late night excursions in KL many years back and I cummunicate with them in Cantonese. I found that KL chinese were quite stubborn. They often speak cantonese rather than english. Unlike in Petaling Jaya, most of them speak english. I also encountered with few chinese customers when i was working which reluctant to speak chinese with me. It seems like they thought speaking english will make them feel high-class or special. To my surprise, I also encountered with a few malay families which spoke English among each other when i was working in Giant shah alam :?.By the way, most of the customers spoke broken english :D I could even speak english better than them :D

aiyah....Klang and Penang Chinese ALSO stubborn in this case as they keep speaking in Hokkien! :D ......sometimes you can't blamed them as apart from their Chinese dialect mother tongue, they only know Malay or a little English. It would be weird for a Chinese to speak to another in Malay....I dunno why .....but it is perfectly allright to speak in English.

When you're serving customers, speak to them in whichever language they are comfortable with. When they start speaking to you in English then you replied in English and dun change to Hokkien or Cantonese as some do not speak their any Chinese dialects at all. You can't expect everyone to speak Chinese to you when you work in a supermarket........it is different from pasar lah!

Sometimes when you see 2 Chinese speaking in English, it is not in all cases they think they are high-class or what. Although most people think so, but there are many genuine case. The reason why I speak to some of my Chinese friends in English (although we all know Cantonese) is because the bunch of us used to have a lot of non-Chinese so speaking in Engllish make sense to others. Then we got so used to it that even amongst ourselves, we speak English.

I also speak to my one of my cousin in English and when we go out together....we speak English all the way but when we are joined by his friends, he and myself speak to his friends in Cantonese but I kept speaking to him in English. It is weird but the thing is that I am so used to speak to him in English so that it is very automatic.

I've seen countless Malay and Indians whom speak amongst themselves in English too so this is not too weird already ;)

What are you talking about dude?

The wide nationalism movement in the early 70s is the factor here.

It is not because of the government's governing style. Malaysia has had the same government since independence. I don't believe the government in the 60's, when English was the medium in schools, was less Islamic than now.

At least, that is my opinion.

I think you got the wrong idea between Islam and Malay Nationalism. Yes it is true that our govt can be conservative at times but I dun think it has anything to do with the decline of English and the promotion of Malay language.

Take Turkey for example.......a predominantly Muslim country but are very modernised just like Malaysia. English are also widely used in Turkey but not to the extend of Malaysia as we used to be part of the British Empire. So English could be used widely even in Islamic countries :)

So religion had nothing to do with language preference as a Chinese muslim could still preach in Chinese in China or a British muslim could use English all he wanted. Just like how the Bible are translated to English, Chinese, Japanese and host of other languages so religion and use of language are non related in this matter ;)

Tomkat is right.....the current use of Malay in education and in the mass media is due to the 'nationalisation' in the 70s to promote the use of Malay Language. The govt had wanted to use Malay as the medium of communication between all races (which is a good move IMO) but had neglected English in the process.

I can see that many older (and to a certain extend newer generations too) communicates better in Malay than in English. You could see an old Chinese man buying something from an Indian storekeeper and conversing in Malay. Likewise just the other day, I was at a mamak stall with one of my friend (a Chinese), a Sabahan and an Indian and we're all communicating in Malay while watching a football match in English :D

szehoong
June 15th, 2004, 02:00 PM
Anyway the wide use of Malay and rendered English lesser in use in day to day usage until the 90s when Malaysia enters the world stage in globalisation. At the same time more and more parents are able to afford to send their childeren to overseas for tertiary education. Thus English came into the spotlight again as it the world's trading and communication language and Malaysia is one of the world's important trading and manufacturing nation.

Our government is now promoting the use of English once again. Science and maths are being taught in English now (I wish they do the same thing with arts subjects like economics). English words are slowly getting visibility in signages and many public buildings are named in English. Even newer developments embraces English names these days.

I think the eroding factor in English isn't due to the fact that Malay is dominating our education system but the lacking of good educationist in English. Teachers taught wrong English usage to schoolchildren and the lack of interest of students in learning the language. This is on top the fact that most parents speaks rojak English to their children at home.

I used to be very good in Malay (since eroded to just being conversant in bahasa pasar hehehe) and English and the fact that I won first placing in both the pidato (Minggu Bahasa Malaysia) and Public Speaking (English Language Week) in my school speaks volume that being good in both Malay and English is possible. I think students nowadays need to use English more to improve.....likewise BM too.......;)

Litterbugs aplenty in Bukit Bintang area

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While tourism has placed Jalan Bukit Bintang on the map, it has also generated an unexpected problem — garbage.

Alam Flora Sdn Bhd collects some 15 tons of rubbish per month, mostly cigarette butts, plastic bags and sweet wrappers.

According to its deputy service area manager Mubarak Ali Gulam Rasul, this is enough to fill a football field. This makes Jalan Bukit Bintang one of the dirtiest places in the city.

"Can you imagine how many cigarette butts, plastic bags and sweet wrappers it takes to make 15 tons?'' he asked in an interview with the New Straits Times.

He said Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman also suffered from the same problem.

"Jalan Bukit Bintang is a high-traffic area popular with both locals and tourists. Keeping it clean is very important to uphold the image of the city. It is hard for us to do so if people throw rubbish indiscriminately." Alam Flora has 38 workers working the five square kilometre area in three cleaning shifts daily. "We have enough manpower to keep the area clean but that's not the point. The point is that garbage should not be on the streets in the first place. Keeping the city clean is the responsibility of all." Mubarak said it all boiled down to the attitude of some city folk who did not care about cleanliness.

"Talk about third-world mentality. Some of us still think that one little cigarette butt will not amount to much. But what if 1,000 people throw cigarette butts in the same drain? The most frustrating thing is when we place a bin near a drain, people still throw rubbish into the drain." City Hall City Centre division inspector Abdul Rahman Bador said although there were enforcement officers on the lookout for litterbugs, it was impossible to do so around the clock.

"If we just catch a few, nothing is going to really change. The important thing here is that we must seek the solution, not the cause of the problem," he said.

He said City Hall and Alam Flora had been working together on cleanliness awareness campaigns in the hope that everybody played their role in keeping the city clean.

"We just hope the next time you want to throw something on the street or into the drain, just think of the effect."

......the other day there is this idiot whom parked in front of my shop to wait for the bank to open in the morning.....then threw his drink can in front of my shop! My aunt whom is sitting at the counter saw him and ask him politely to please pick it up and throw it in the rubbish bin just a few feet away (there's a 7-eleven next to our shoplot and the rubbish bin is in front of the convenient store). Guess what he told my aunt? "You have any proof I threw it on the floor?" ...and then he drove away! These idiots got the cheek to say such thing and dun realised that he's on the wrong. The least he could do is to apologised and throw it in the rubbish bin. To make things worst he speaks good English and are professionally dressed. And this is just ONE person.......I guess we have lotsa these people walking around town :ohno:

on another note

I think our construction can be different to begin with though. Perhaps shops shouldn't any longer have open uncovered drains in front, furthermore, back lanes should be used for garbage so that it can be kept out of sight from the main roads. I think some shopping lots already have this....it should be a design requirement fr City Halls everywhere I think....houses too!

Hi,

I am lucky enough to visit KL every year or so, and think the changes over the years to BB are brilliant!

I'm visiting again next March, and am keen to discover whether there will be any changes to the street? e.g. will the Regent side be paved? Will there be any extension to the current pedestrian street?
What changes to StarHill ? (Which really needs a better retail mix IMO)
Any other new shops or centres?

I'm staying in the new Westin and can't wait to discover BB again.

Thanks,

Welcome to the Malaysian Forums Gary!

The new mall which DY2K2 described as opposite StarHill Centre are called The Pavillion. When completed we'll see the other side of Bukit Bintang Road as having a good pedestrian walkway like Bintang Walk. This would also be extended via 2 overhead bridges connecting to the opposite side of Jalan Raja Chulan (Weld Road) to a new developement called Chulan Square which is gonna complete construction maybe sometime next year as it is more than half completed now ;)

I would highly recommend you to give Berjaya Times Square a visit since there would be lots more exciting things to be opened there within the next few months :)

There is a smallish shopping mall in between Planet Hollywood and Lot 10 called Piccolo Galeria. It just opened its doors like about 2 weeks ago. I can't show any of ya any pics of it cos I forgot to bring my camera out that day :wallbash: ....but then again the mall has got only 5 tenants moved in the time I was there. ;)

For the benefit of those whom had not seen it or dunno where is it......here's some pictures I took of this 'mini' mall back in August when the exterior of the place is completed ;)

The Samsung 'centre' that DY2K2 mentioned is actually a Samsung kiosk along Bintang Walk. Its the nicest one there so far so it is advisable to check it out as well :)

And lastly......the partially-opened Avenue K (as of now). It should be fully opened in time for Christmas or at the very least by Chinese New Year ;)

This shopping mall is the shopping place for Haute Couture and had very high-standard finishing to its interior and exterior. More pics could be found here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=103569&page=10&pp=20

Well...the BB Monorail station is in-between Lot 10 and Sg. Wang Plaza and it is connected directly into both malls. From there you need to walk to the rest of the other malls. Other than those at BB, it is also conencted directly into Berjaya Times Square via the Imbi station. In the future it would be connected to Berjaya Central Park (a new mall u/c) via the Bukit Nanas station and KL Sentral's new mall (planning stage).

Oh....and Starhill Centre now are in the midst of a major renovation by the world's renowned interior designer David Rockwell. Anyway the mall is gonna be extended via a skybridge to its neighbouring sister - the Ritz-Carlton Residences podium which is gonna feature more upmarket stores ;)
