ReiAyanami July 30th, 2009, 10:33 PM Why you krauts made a thread for the tommies?
erbse July 30th, 2009, 10:45 PM Out of pity.
Kame July 31st, 2009, 04:55 PM :lol::rofl:

schumari November 24th, 2009, 02:49 PM gefaellt mir total gut!

English Understatement statt kinesischem Spektakel?

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) issued new images showing the testing of the London 2012 Aquatics Centre dive pool and two 50m swimming pools that will host record-breaking performances in 2012 and open to the public after the Games.
The three concrete pools are being tested with over 10 million litres of water before being sealed and lined with 180,000 tiles. Testing of the dive pool and training pool is complete and the competition pool starts being filled this week.
Work is also underway lining the unique 160m-long wave-shaped steel roof, which weighs more than 3,000 tonnes and rests on just three concrete supports. In the coming weeks cladding will start on the curving timber ceiling and work is continuing on the huge 250m and 45m-wide land bridge that forms the main walking access into the Olympic Park and the roof of the training pool.
The Aquatics Centre is on track to be complete in summer 2011 ready for Test Events and after the Games will provide two 50m swimming pools with moveable floors and separation booms, a diving pool and dry diving area for the full range of community and elite use.
ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: 'The Aquatics Centre is on track for completion in mid-2011 and the sweeping roof that will form the ‘Gateway to the Games’ is now a fixture in the skyline alongside the Olympic Stadium. Testing the pools is major milestone for the construction of the Aquatics Centre which in legacy will provide a range of swimming and diving facilities and become a new London landmark.
'The Olympic Park "big build" is on track and within budget as we move through our toughest year, with the workforce and activity on site reaching its peak.'
London 2012 Organising Committee Chairman Sebastian Coe said: 'The Aquatics Centre is going to be a spectacular venue for the Games in 2012 and its unique roof will be a wonderful addition to the east London skyline. At Games-time, 17,500 excited spectators will be able to "raise the roof" cheering on the swimmers, including our British medal hopefuls, and in legacy it will become a much-needed elite and community facility. We are making great progress – and are fully on track with this iconic gateway to the Olympic Park.'
Andrew Altman, Chief Executive of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, which is responsible for the long term planning, management and maintenance of the Olympic Park and venues after the Games, said: 'The Aquatics Centre will be an iconic building and a thriving centre for community use in the Park after the Games. Its two 50m pools and a 25m diving pool will also offer elite swimmers a world-class training facility.'
The Zaha Hadid designed Aquatics Centre is located in the south of the Olympic Park and will be the main ‘Gateway into the Games', hosting swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, water polo finals and the swimming discipline of the Modern Pentathlon
The Aquatics Centre will have a capacity of 17,500 during the Games, reducing to a maximum of 2,500 in legacy, with the ability to add 1,000 for major events, and provide two 50m swimming pools, a diving pool and dry diving area - facilities London does not have at present
Eleven industrial buildings have been demolished on the 55,000sq m site.
Around 160,000 tonnes of soil have been dug out on of what was one of the more challenging and complex areas of the Olympic Park, contaminated with pollutants including petrol, oil, tar, solvents and heavy metals such as arsenic and lead
Four skeletons were discovered and removed from a prehistoric settlement discovered on the site of the Aquatics Centre.
140,000 tonnes of clean soil has been brought from other areas of the Olympic Park to prepare for construction to start.
Balfour Beatty is building the Aquatics Centre and huge land-bridge that forms the roof of the training pool and the main pedestrian access to the Olympic Park. Construction work will be complete in 2011 for test events ahead of the Games.
The river that runs alongside the venue has been widened by eight metres by building 550m of new river walls.
The sweeping roof, which is 160m long and 80m at its widest point, is an innovative steel structure weighing more than 3,000 tonnes with a striking and robust aluminium covering, half of which is recycled, resting on three supports.
Construction started on the foundations in July 2008. A 3,000-tonne concrete ‘bridge’ has been built spanning and protecting the tunnels which have been dug to run powerlines beneath the site. The 18.5m-tall northwest roof support has been built on top of this base.
Work is well underway on the 250m and 45m-wide land bridge that forms the main ‘Gateway to the Games’ from the Stratford City development, spanning the Aquatics Centre and forming the roof of the training pool.
Around 1,000m cubic metres of concrete has been poured to create five sets of bridge supports, steel beams have been lifted into place to form the first section of the bridge spanning railway lines and roadways. Work is now currently underway on the section of bridge that will form the training pool roof. The land bridge is on track to be complete before summer 2010. Fourteen steel beams, up to 60m-long and weighing 75 tonnes each have been produced in Scunthorpe, fabricated in Bolton and lifted into place .

Sandblast July 19th, 2010, 12:50 PM The Athletics Stadium looks pretty boring and 'cheap', especially when you compare it to the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing.
Both Wembley ...

.... both in London, would have been perfectly acceptable for an athletics venue. After the 2012 London Games, guess what the new athletics stadium will become? Yes, you guessed correct .... yet another football stadium!!! A complete waste of money!
RobH July 19th, 2010, 07:25 PM Not true. The stadium has to keep athletics, even if West Ham do move in (which hasn't been decided yet, despite what you claim).
The Emirates would be too small for IOC requirements even if it could fit in a track (which it can't). Another wrong fact. And Wembley, whilst it can theoretically host athletics, is not ideal either. We've got a park concept with all the main venues close together; and that's what won us the Games.
So, the above post is wrong in almost every point. Please ignore it people. :)

 Not a lot of Athletics will be taking place in the new stadium between August and May when it is eventially "gifted" to a London football club ... I suppose the football team based there will kindly hand it over during the months of June & July to athletics associations whilst football isn't being played, but I truly doubt that will ever happen!!!
Wembley would make a perfect athletics stadium .... this whole Olympic exercise was just yet another excuse to throw £BILLIONS more at London and "regenerate" yet another run down area of London .... which in 10 years time will look just as run down as it did 10 years ago.
Trust me German friends, the British public (the 54 million people that live outside the capital) are by no means united by the prospect of the Olympic Games coming to London, it is something we simply can't afford.

The change in the fortunes in this area are such that the Wellcome Trust wants to buy the Park, invest a further £1bn in it, and turn it into a massive research facility with University campusus, labs, parkland, and of course all the new sporting venues. The government are currently considering this proposal.
Of course not everyone will be behind the Games (though between 70-80% are according to most surveys I've seen), but it's hard to take posts like Sandblast's seriously when he's claiming the Olympic Park will be just as run down in ten years as it was ten years ago.
BTW Erbse, you're quite welcome to see more progress at the London 2012 forums.

WooWoo July 17th, 2011, 03:30 PM Trust me German friends, the British public (the 54 million people that live outside the capital) are by no means united by the prospect of the Olympic Games coming to London, it is something we simply can't afford.
I live in Manchester, and I happen to be very excited for the Olympics. There are always reports on it on the news, and follows up on athletes. You may not be very happy about the Olympics coming to our shores but please do not speak for me thank you :)
The British public's biggest critics are themselves

London 2012's opening ceremony is to be called Isles of Wonder, organisers have revealed six months ahead of the Games.
The ceremony's artistic director, Danny Boyle, revealed the name at a press briefing alongside creative director Stephen Daldry.
Boyle said it would be about a land that has been poisoned by industrial legacy and the recovery of that land.
It is anticipated the opening ceremony on 27 July will be watched by one billion TV viewers.
Bolye, who is best known for directing Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, said they had commissioned the biggest ringing bell in Europe to hang at one end of stadium and ring at opening of Games.
It is to be inscribed with a quote from Shakespeare's The Tempest: "Be not afeard, the isle is full of noises".
Boyle said he wanted people to hear it "for hundreds of years".
'Fabulous opportunity'
Talking about all four Olympic ceremonies Daldry said they were the "greatest shows on earth and the task was enormous."
He said they represent one journey to the end looking at who we are, who we were and who we would wish to be.
More detailed information will be released about the artists in April and the content of opening ceremony in June, he added.
All four ceremonies are expected to be watched by four billion people and advertising experts estimate this is worth up to £5bn in airtime exposure.
At the opening ceremony Boyle will again be collaborating with electronic musical duo Underworld whose 'Born Slippy' featured in Trainspotting.
The pair have been named musical directors of the three-hour ceremony.
Some 20,000 performers are being sought for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
London 2012 ceremonies
Cast of 15,000 volunteers
23,000 costumes
12 hours of music
60 musicians
15,000 sq m of staging
13,000 propos
one million watt PA system with 500 speakers
They will be drawn from members of the public and more than 10,000 have already been auditioned.
Speaking earlier on Friday about the challenges that lay ahead in the next six months, London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe said it was a fabulous opportunity but a "heavy weight of responsibility".
Locog chief executive Paul Deighton said it would be all about attention to detail as well as building the excitement and helping people to be a part of what will be "the greatest thing this city has seen in their lifetimes".
A ceremony was also being held marking the handover of the Athletes' Village, on the Olympic Park in Stratford, from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to Locog.
The 2,818 flats will now be fitted out to cater for 16,000 athletes and officials from 200 countries.

Was danach damit anzufangen war, interessierte vorerst niemanden.

jerseyboi February 10th, 2012, 11:06 AM Olympics-UK going great guns on tourism push
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/09/uk-olympics-tourism-idUSLNE81803O20120209
Reuters) - Britain launched on Thursday its biggest ever campaign to attract visitors to its shores, exploiting a unique year in which London will host the Olympics and Queen Elizabeth celebrates 60 years on the throne.
"(GREAT Britain) is the largest ad (campaign) in our history," said Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for culture, Olympics, media and sport of the 125 million pound trade and tourism initiative.
"We're taking the fight for the tourist pound right to our competitors' doorsteps... there will be no escape from the message that Britain is great."
The international trade and tourism drive is split into a 25 million "image campaign" and a 100 million pounds "tactical campaign" invested over a four-year period across 20 source markets, to be co-funded by companies including British Airways, easyJet, P&O Ferries and Radisson Hotels .
Britain, already the sixth most visited country in the world, plans to splash images promoting its heritage around airports, metro stations and road junctions in 14 cities around the globe, with the aim of attracting over 4.6 million extra visitors over the next four years, and securing an additional 2.3 billion pounds in visitor spend.
The cities include Los Angeles, Tokyo, Beijing, New Delhi and Sydney.
"If you are looking for one traditional British quality that you won't see this year, that is modesty," Hunt said.
The campaign is a cross-department effort between tourism agency VisitBritain, the British Council (educational marketing) and UK Trade and Investment (business investment marketing).
USING THE GAMES
Critics have questioned whether the UK requires such a costly awareness-raising campaign in a year when the UK will already be receiving unsurpassed attention from the eyes of the world. But the government message is clear: There is nothing automatic about a tourism boost, Games or no Games.
"It is an incredible privilege to host the Olympics, and we want to do everything we can to make sure that the legacy from hosting the Games is jobs... for British businesses as a lasting legacy," Hunt told journalists today.
Sandie Dawe, chief executive of VisitBritain added that 2012 is a critical year for the long-term success of British tourism.
The cross-department group aim to convert interest in the UK into the decision to actually commit to visiting.
Shanghai and Beijing commuters will have already noticed the posters that line the cities' metro stations. Two hundred Mumbai taxis will be dressed in the campaign's creative, as will New York subway trains.
In a move which Hunt admits is "cheeky", a billboard outside the Louvre in Paris bellows out the message that "Culture is GREAT Britain", and that museums are actually free in London. GREAT will also link up with international events such as next week's New York Fashion Week.
Overall, the campaign is expected to reach 90 million people.
The UK travel industry figures worry that fewer traditional, foreign tours will come to London this summer.
The European Tour Operators Association ETOA.L announced after a November 2011 survey a dramatic reduction in bookings during the summer 2012 period.
The group said visitors will be put off by the London crowds and the possibility of higher hotel prices. European travel is also likely to be significantly affected by the ongoing Eurozone crisis.
Hunt has in recent months regularly dismissed fears that tourists will stay away from Britain during the Olympics, listing the many other cultural reasons for people to visit.
Today, the minister painted a picture of 2012 as a series of massive promotional "punches", from the cross-country Olympic torch relay on May 18, through the Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June, the Olympics' opening ceremony on July 27 and the London Festival 2012, a 12-week programme of concerts, exhibitions, films and live events which marks the culmination of the four-year Cultural Olympiad.
Hunt said an extra 600,000 international visitors were expected because of the Games.
The government is seeking to bolster UK domestic tourism in 2012 with a four million pound advertising campaign, beginning March 8, which extols the virtues of staying home and watching the Olympic.

jerseyboi February 22nd, 2012, 11:48 AM The photos speak for themselves. Absolutely stunning from even the wings. what's really weird (and quite the architectural moment) is seeing essentially the outside of a building inside. Even being at the same level as the roof is a fantastic experience. Everything just feels so intimate and completely deceiving how structural massive it is. I love how obvious it is what is permanent and temporary, and the commentary made mention of this fact when it talked about the design of the building.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron (C) and Chair of the London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG) Sebastian Coe listen, as International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge (L) speaks during a news conference at 10 Downing Street in London March 28, 2012. [Photo/Agencies]
LONDON - London 2012 will be a blueprint for future Olympic Games, IOC president Jacques Rogge said on Wednesday ahead of a three-day inspection of the venues.
"London has raised the bar on how to deliver a lasting legacy," Rogge told a news conference alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron.
"We can already see tangible results in the remarkable regeneration of East London. This great historical city has created a legacy blueprint for future Games hosts."
Rogge met Cameron at Downing Street to discuss preparations for the Games which start on July 27 and met several London 2012 ambassadors including former heptathlete Denise Lewis.
The inspection visit by the IOC, the last one scheduled before the start of the Games, coincides with the publication of the Government's new legacy blueprint.
"Legacy has been built into the DNA of London 2012," Cameron said. "But by definition, of course, the true legacy of London 2012 lies in the future.
"Though much has been done, I am acutely aware that the drive to embed and secure the benefits of London 2012 is still to come. That is our biggest challenge. It's also our greatest opportunity."

http://i42.tinypic.com/5uqyzd.png
The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) has announced that Greece's British-born swimming world champion, Spyros Gianniotis, will be the first Torchbearer for the Greek leg of the London 2012 Torch Relay.
Running from 10–17 May, the 3,000km Relay will see the Olympic Flame carried by 500 people as it passes through 34 Greek cities, before being handed to London 2012 representatives ahead of the 70-day Relay around the UK and Ireland.
Liverpool-born Gianniotis, who won gold in the 10km open water event at last year’s FINA World Championships in Shanghai, is expected to be a major medal contender at the 2012 Olympic Games and has already stated that, “swimming in London will be like swimming at home”.
The Greek leg of the Torch Relay will begin on 10 May with a ceremony at the Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Flame will be lit using the sun's rays in the presence of International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe. It will then begin its journey across Greece, travelling to the island of Crete before going to Piraeus, Thessalonica, Xanthi and Larissa.
On 17 May, the Flame will arrive in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens – the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 – where it will be handed to the London 2012 delegation.
The UK leg of the Torch Relay will then begin on 18 May, before finishing at the London 2012 Opening Ceremony on 27 July.

jerseyboi April 22nd, 2012, 11:34 AM London 2012 'will surpass Sydney' '
London 2012 will surpass Sydney and be hailed as the best Olympics ever staged, Australia's leading IOC member predicted as organisers marked 100 days to the start of the Games.
Kevan Gosper, an IOC member since 1977 and a vice-president of the Sydney 2000 Olympics organising committee, said London 2012 had succeeded in turning the Games into a nationwide event rather than one just focused on the capital.
Organisers launched their slogan for the Games - Inspire a Generation - with Gosper in attendance and he said there would be no envy from Australians if London takes over Sydney's mantle as the best Games there has been.
Gosper said: "Records are set to broken. Sydney got the accolade of the best-ever Games but that was 12 years ago."
The 100 days to go launch event at Kew Gardens in London also saw the unveiling of giant Olympic rings in a flower display which will be visible from flights arriving at Heathrow airport.
Organisers also announced the Red Arrows - the RAF aerobatic team - will perform a flypast across the UK to mark the opening ceremony on July 27, flying over London 2012 live sites in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London.
London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said: "I am delighted to announce the motto Inspire a Generation.
"It is everything we have been saying since we have started this extraordinary journey, not just since we got across the finish line in Singapore."
The organisation of the Games has been relatively untroubled with all the building work coming in on time and within budget and London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton said organisers would be "paranoid" in ensuring complacency did not creep in.
Deighton said: "When it comes to the risk of complacency I can assure you in life these days only the paranoid succeed so there is absolutely no danger of us not looking at every risk that would prevent us delivering these Games in the effective and spectacular way we have promised."
