View Full Version : City of Trnava, Slovakia
peterthegreat February 23rd, 2005, 10:02 AM The town is situated in fertile plain of Trnava range hills, 50 km from the capital city Bratislava. The surroundings of Trnava was colonized already from the 8th century by the Slavs. The first written reference about Trnava is from 1211. The name of the town derives from the markets, that they carried out of Saturday (in German Tyrnau and the Hungarian Szombat) Trnava as the first town in Slovakia (and as the second town in Hungary) was granted by the Hungarian King Belo IV free royal privileges in 1238. In the second half of the 13th century the citizens have built the first town fortifications and more late the stone fortifications with the ramparts and four gates in order to defend their property.
The town of Trnava was also the town of important encounter and agreements between the monarchs. The king Luis I of Anjou was built here the real court ("curia regia") and thanks to him were built many gothic buildings.
The importance of the town grew above all in the 16th century, when in 1543 the archbishops of Esztergom with their diocese have transferred themselves threaten by the Turkish danger. Trnava became the coronation town of the Hungarian kings and also the spiritual, religious and cultural center. In the XVII century it was "written" a chapter of golden history of Trnava, when the cardinal Peter Pazmany founded in 1635 the Trnava University, and became quite soon a well-known university town in all Europe. But this period not last to a long time. After that the Turks were repelled, the town began loser its importance and in 1777 the empress Maria Theresa made transfer the university to Buda.
In the years 1792-97 Trnava became a center of the Slovak National Awakening and Anton Bernolak established here the main stand of Slovak Educational Craftsmanship (Slovenske ucene tovarisstvo). Bernolak has been the codifier of first Slovak literary language based on the dialect of Trnava. Trnava comes called also a "Little Rome" because of the characteristic complex of university buildings and the many present churches in town.
Trnava has app. 70.000 inhabitants :-)))

I agree with you, he can have his opinion, but it is ridiculous to say "I don like this or that country" without any explanation. It is better to keep quiet, than to say something foolish.

Because of this "Turkey has great history, modern highways and beautiful cities" crap in every thread on SSC.
Ozcan February 23rd, 2005, 02:35 PM Because of this "Turkey has great history, modern highways and beautiful cities" crap in every thread on SSC.
Firstly, those are the truth, not crap :weirdo:
Secondly, everyone is promoting their country, but I agree it should be more proper!
long foot February 23rd, 2005, 02:45 PM Maybe it is truth, but if someone open thread about Slovakian highways, you shouldn't post 1000 pics of Turkish highways immediately, to prove that your highways are better ;)
peterthegreat February 23rd, 2005, 02:49 PM Maybe it is truth, but if someone open thread about Slovakian highways, you shouldn't post 1000 pics of Turkish highways immediately, to prove that your highways are better ;)

AZ2SI February 23rd, 2005, 04:43 PM Thanks for sharing pics of your wonderful towns with us, Peterthegreat!
Funny map! Things like that happen all too often: During a ski jumping competition last year, for instance, NBC referred to Slovenian ski jumper Primoz Peterka as a Slovak. And we all know about Bush's famous mix-up (maybe that's he decided to hold his summits with Putin in both countries).
I've got another one: This is what the blogger Michael Manske of The Glory of Carniola (carniola.org) discovered recently:

Source: carniola.org
And this is a tourist guide from neighboring Austria!
Arpels February 23rd, 2005, 05:55 PM very beautiful city, the churches are amazing :)

Provoking a discussion and indicting a person, especially, when he is not present at the forum is sometimes a mean to reach someone goals. Well, going into the discussion with Peter, who is not that often present in Eoroscrapers, and mostly present in other forum and rapidly seeking for "results" is desperating. Btw, lenghth and sometimes quality of Iran highways is bigger, than turkish ones.
I am not that down to call you by a means of mental, or animal diseases. You have your own forum in Euroscrapers section and you should be very happy and grateful to have it. Appreciate that, especially, when your country is desperately trying to catch up, what has been neglected for the centuries.
Turkey has many sins and problems from the past and from the present. But instead of being cautious and at least trying to be a little bit decent, you naively think, that being an offensive will bring you some kind of result.
Btw, I am not the only one, who is attacking Turkey, there are not quite a few, but a majority of forumers, that are either ignoring, or attacking, yes, many times Turkey, when they feel, that something is not appropriate.
bubach_hlubach February 23rd, 2005, 07:15 PM Trnava is a sweety pie of town, really cute :)
Trnava is also sister city of Varazdin in Croatia.
How come that any of you guys didnt lunch a thread on Bratislava yet? I am looking forward to see it to happen :)
@Ozcan, i am a Croat too, but i may not gonna like you only because of your childlishly silly attitude that's got absolutely nothing to do with your nationality. You are such a wierdo sometimes. :weirdo: :weirdo: :weirdo: :)
long foot February 23rd, 2005, 09:16 PM Trnava is also sister city of Varazdin in Croatia.

BTW Trnava is also one district in Zagreb :)
Wicky February 23rd, 2005, 09:23 PM Sure they are. Not the appropriate picture, but just take these sportsmen aside: http://www.baseballgreece.com/mareu3.jpg.
But there are also adapted commieblocks, to be more aesthetic

Aside from that, the two pictures from the modern architecture I found:

As well as new projects and construction, like this satelite town (http://www.trnava.sk/mesto/images/mesto/k01.jpg), already in construction.
bubach_hlubach February 23rd, 2005, 09:27 PM What does it mean "sister city"?
BTW Trnava is also one district in Zagreb :)
Here is an example of what 'sister city' means :)
"Cornerstones of Co-operation and Partnership"
"In the spirit of open friendship and true understanding among peoples, the City of Varadin is taking steps toward a growing co-operation and partnership with other local communities, in light of the outreach toward respect and tolerance between different cultures and traditions.
By decisions Of the City Council of the City of Varadin, relations of partnership and friendship have been set with the following Cities (in chronological order):
Montale (Italy), Trnava (Slovakia), and Ravensburg (Germany).
A common will wrapped in the spirit of Europe, one respecting human dignity, freedom, equality, solidarity, and justice, is found in the official documents on mutual co-operation signed by representatives of both Cities-friends.
It is our hope, and the hope of our partner cities, that this partnership serves as one of the cornerstones for peace and united Europe.
In order for these pages to contribute to this noble cause, you may use the following links to get to know our friendship and partnership cities by way of their Web pages."

Anyhow, there are more places called Trnava in Croatia, besides the one in Zagreb, there is one Trnava known by wineyards somewhere in central Croatia.
Wicky February 23rd, 2005, 09:30 PM @bubach hlubach: Good point. There should be definitely more information about Bratislava construction.

Wicky February 23rd, 2005, 09:55 PM Somethink like thishttp://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=158537? Donīt worry, we have Petrzalka, especially the part further from Danube.
Maybe you should consider the changing of this district name though. If the Varazdin is the twin city...
bubach_hlubach February 23rd, 2005, 10:47 PM @long foot, i thought Trnava was a part of Dubrava, really...BBB!!! :D
@Wicky, i think it would be very needless to rename it to something else, to tell you the truth, Trnava in Zagreb isnt even considered a district, it's just a few streets, very uknown part of the city, quite far away from centre. :)
