Kenya successfully hosted the 5th Africa Flatwater Canoe-Kayak championships at Masinga dam from the 24th to the 27th of January 2008. The success story of this event went a long way in showing to the world that Kenya is a diverse and safe destination.

A total of 15 African countries took part in this first of a kind event to held in Kenya which also acted as qualifier event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The event was officiated by French officials led by the chairman of the International canoeing federation slalom committee.

A team from Iran and North America graced the tournament, their presence a testament that the competing nations had confidence in the tournament’s organization and Kenya as the host and a leading tourist destination.

The still waters of Masinga dam, a source of Kenya’s hydropower, offered an idyllic arena for flat-water canoe races that were dominated by the experienced teams from South Africa and Tunisia.

The fast moving Sagana River in central Kenya was the venue for the canoe/kayak slalom event. Participating teams as well as guest teams from North America and Iran tackled the rapid waters of the Sagana all looking to set the fastest times possible over the well planned course. Athletes from North America, South Africa and Togo carried the day in the four competitive races.

The participants were also treated to Kenya’s world famous wildlife at the Mwea National Reserve. The park which is located within reach of Masinga Dam provided the perfect getaway for the team members. The park is home to a modest elephant population, Rothschild giraffes, common zebras, hippos and over 150 different species of birds.

Masinga dam is a budding location for water sports and is easily accessible by air and road. Accommodation is available at the Masinga Dam Resort. Budget accommodation is readily available in Matuu, a small town 40Kms from Masinga Dam.

You don’t have to be a water sports enthusiast to enjoy what Masinga and its environs have on offer. A good number of interesting sites are easily accessible from Masinga.

By road, an amazing place to visit is Fourteen Falls and Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park. The park is home to the African buffalo, different species of monkey and abundant forest birds and on certain times in the year, a colorful showing of butterflies are a charm to spot.

The serene summit of the hill also popularly christened Kilima Mbogo by the locals provides panoramic views from all angles as far as they eye can see. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya are easily visible.

Remember the famous maralal camel derby.

The Annual Maralal Camel Derby will be flagged off on August 1st 2008, starting 3 days of festivities in this remote desert outpost. The quiet town of Maralal, about 348 kms North of Nairobi, is considered the gateway to Kenya’s wild and arid North, and is a mecca for adventurers, nomads and camels.

This is real camel country, and the single humped dromedary camel is a vital part of life for many of Northern Kenya’s nomadic people. Each year, the Camel Derby brings colour and action to the streets of Maralal as the finest Camels in the North gather for the big race.

While most of Kenya’s camel rearing communities do not ride them- using them as pack animals- they are excellent handlers and judges of an animals strength and potential for speed.

Winning the Derby is a great local honour, and each year the title is hotly contested. But this by no means a purely local event. Maralal is a haven for nomadic cultures, and that includes travellers from all over the globe. The Town is a popular stopover for travellers looking for adventure in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District - one of Africa’s last great unspoilt wilderness areas.

For anyone visiting the area around this time, attending the Derby is a must. The three day race event is a chance to experience culture, colour, action and adventure first hand. This is not just a spectator sport - if you are going to attend the derby, why not saddle up and join in?

Bull fighting set to be an international event.
Written By:Rosalia , Posted: Mon, Apr 30, 2007

Bull fighting is set to rise a notch higher when plans to make it an international event this year materialize. This is one of the cultural activities earmarked by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) as potential tourist attraction that can be promoted to enhance revenue.

Kenya Tourism Board Managing Director Dr. Achieng Ong'onga says the first batch of tourists will arrive In June to witness the event. Dr. Ong'onga was speaking in Khayega in Kakamega during a media audit of the tourism in the western region.

He said in countries like Spain, bull fighting is a major tourist attraction. As a starting point, Ong'onga said plans are underway to restructure the stadium in order to provide a suitable facility of high standards for the event.

Chairman of the Abakakamega bull fighting association Peter Likabu says the move to upgrade the stadium is welcome by the residents and will, through revenue collected, uplift the standards of the people of Khayega, and promote Kenya on the International market.

The Africa Concours d’Elegance is the classiest event on the motor sport calendar and the 2008 competition enhanced the growing international importance of the annual vehicle beauty contest now in its 39th year. The Concours attracts competitors from outside East Africa and helps the Kenya Tourist Board publicise Kenya as a destination for special interest groups and sports enthusiasts. ANDY STEAD, a South African journalist who covered last year’s event, wrote this article for the Classic Africa magazine.

I hear this is a tradition that has survived for centuries in the coast?

Yes this event if properly sponsored by both Govt and private sector can really be a very big sporting event in our calender. Already their are huge events that normally take place in Lamu like the Maulid festivals of which it can be paired with(around the same time) to pronounce it in a huge way.

Great Video Mwanamwiwa. This is a natural to the Maasai, with proper training from childhood to adulthood Iam sure Kenya can strike medals in future games if only they are serious in such sports.^^
