HOK Sport designed something that would be used as the main stadium for the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. It would have a 70000 capacity during the Games and be reduced to 30,000 thereafter.

However, the stadium that was supposed to have the role that this new stadium is intended for is Munhak Stadium.

The new stadium looks like all seats are permanent and if that stadium is built in Incheon, it will be a white elephant even at its reduced capacity. I wish the stadium were built in some other city. Do you like this stadium or not? I do, but Please do not build this stadium in Incheon. Let the Munhak Stadium be the main stadium for the 2014 Asian Summer Games.

well, that's really weird to build a 70k seater in a city where already is a 50k stadium. and you also have an athletic stadium in Daegu for more than 65k. isn't this one good enough for the games? madness and waste of money.

This stadium and its design should be traded to Manila in the Philippines.

I can't see the point in a city with a perfectly suitable 50,000 seat stadium already built. The design is nice but the whole project is un-necessary.

well, the munhak stadium is big enough to accomodate the fans for the asiad and theres no need to build another one for popularity purposes!

(to be completed in mid 2013)

Below images are 2014 Incheon Asian Games Stadium.

The competition-winning design of the main stadium for the 17th Asian games in Incheon, in South Korea, illustrates a new level of sustainable design in stadia in Asia.
This Stadium accommodates 70,000 seats and may be expandable to 100,000 seats considering big events such as Olympic Games and World Cup.
After big events , It will reduce down to a single sided grandstand for 30,000 afterward as a People’s Park for the city of Incheon.

The global architecture firm, Populous, formerly HOK Sport Venue Event, is designing Incheon stadium with local firm Heerim Architects and Planners.

For a city with only 2.7 mil, Incheon has too many "large-sized" stadiums.

1. Incheon Munhak Stadium (50,256)

2. Incheon Baseball Stadium (30,480)

3. Seungui Arena Park (Football-Specific stadium, 20,030) - Currently under-contruction; about 30% completed

^^ Indeed. Why can't they host the Asian games at Incheon Munhak Stadium?

Btw that Seungui Arena Park looks great, surely one of the best 20k stadiums in the world. Any construction pics available?

I hoped that the new stadium would be cancelled, but they instead had to go ahead with this project anyway. Why dodn't they just trade the proposal to Bangkok? If a Soccer World Cup comes to South Korea, Incheon would have to choose between the Munhak Stadium and the new white elephant stadium.

The Bidding Committee for the 2022 World Cup held a general meeting on March 4, 2010 at the Chosun Hotel and officially announced the list of host cities that will be included in Korea's 2022 World Cup bid.

At the meeting it was decided that the Incheon Asian Games Stadium would be the host stadium for the 2022 World Cup opening ceremony.

The seating capacity of Incheon Asian Games Stadium will be expanded to 80,000 from 70,000.

^^If this stadium hosts the opening game of a World Cup in South Korea, then Seoul's upgraded Olympic Stadium (which was not used in the previous would cup held in Korea republic) should host the final. How about the capacity remains at 70,000 instead of being expanded because if it si expanded, it's still gonna be a white elephant.

This stadium still sucks though.

How are they supposed to reduce a big stadium's seating capacity from 70 000 to 30 000?

What do they mean by "single-sided grandstand"?

Are they going to deconstruct one side of the stadium? Or are they going to downsize all sides of the stadium to a single tier?

How are they supposed to achieve this reduction in capacity?

Look carefully.
On one picture. On the right side, you have the main stand. On the left side, you have a "green wall" or "green stand" or "nature stand" (i apoligize not for speaking good english).
Si in closing one stand, they can reduce the capicity to 30 000.

^^I'm sure that you're referring to this rendering.

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3148/main2n.jpg (http://img7.imageshack.us/i/main2n.jpg/)

So, after the games, the entire left side of the stadium (whose stands I assume are temporary) will be completely removed? And that side of the stadium will be replaced by greenery?

Yes, i was referring to this render.
In Asia, they used to reduce capacity of stadiums, like the Kobe wing stadiums in Japan or the ANZ Stadium in Sydney.
What are they going to do with this green stand... i don't know.

Aesthetically very pleasing, but why do the have to build this so the spectators are such a long distance away from any of the competitors?

From Korea Herald News

Ancient tomb remains found at stadium site

Remains of tombs dating back to Korea’s Baekje Kingdom (B.C. 18―A.D. 660) have been discovered at the site secured for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Stadium.

Seokyong Cultural Properties Research Institute, a government-affiliated organization, has been excavating the lot since March 2010.

The investigation team in August of last year started focusing on a particular 58,996 square-meter plot of land where traces of the tombs, known as Jugu graves, were found.

A total of 39 sites were found, along with more than 1,000 remains of dugout mud holes and Joseon Dynasty pit-houses, the organization said.

During the Baekje period, the dead would be placed in a square ditch with a hole at the bottom. The body would then be buried using the mud dug for the grave.

“The ditch had a symbolic meaning,” said Lee Young-ho of Seokyong Cultural Properties Research Institute.

“The people believed it would connect this world to the afterlife.”

Most of the Jugu grave sites have lost their center where the bodies were buried, Lee said.

“Most of the sites only have their square ditches remaining,” he said.

“This is a rare case, as Jugu graves are rarely discovered in Incheon,” said Noh Seon-ho, another official of the institute.

“The remains are not in a good condition, but they are significant for future academic research, nevertheless.”

Apart from the lot the team has been excavating, construction of the stadium has already begun. The excavation team will complete their work by next week, and the property will be turned into a green outdoor space next to the stadium, Noh said.
