METROPOLITAN STADIUM BARQUISIMETO, Venezuela

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/beachpow1/391042749_78a8156ac5.jpg

The Estadio Metropolitano de Fútbol de Lara is a soccer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_%28soccer%29) stadium located in the heart of the city of Barquisimeto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barquisimeto), Venezuela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venezuela), home ground of Guaros de Lara FC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guaros_de_Lara_FC). It was built by the Venezuelan company Jantesa, and it is one of the nine venues for the Copa America 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_America_2007). It has a capacity of 40,312, it has a field of 110 x 70 m, it has Aloha Seashore Paspalum grass, it has a parking lot for 4,000 vehicles, elevators, 4 locker rooms, an anti-doping room, a medical room, referee room and two gigantic screens, 24 cabins for the press and a VIP area.

The Metropolitano De Lara has no athletics track, so the spectators are seated very close to the game action. Because of this construction, it is often compared with Old Trafford, the Manchester United Stadium in England
Lara F.C. opened Venezuela to many opportunities by playing in the Copa Libertadores (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_Libertadores) in 1969. In 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005), the CONMEBOL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONMEBOL) chose the Copa America 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_America_2007) venues; in those selected Barquisimeto was not one of the venues selected. In 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006) the CONMEBOL decided to add Barquisimeto as a venue for the Copa America 2007 in honor of Lara FC.

The Stadium is now under the final stage of construction, it will be opened in 2 months (October 2009).

Capacity: 40.312 seats

The sport is called football, and to the people who call it soccer, get over it because this sport has only one name and will always have one name.

True... the word "soccer" is used only in United State of America so as the word "Calcio", that only used in Italy both names of the sport world fomous football...

Apparently you need a history lesson.

Well this brand has taken the name in most of the world, but it certainly hasn't always, and we have the British to thank for any confusion. Rugby used to be known as football too. In the late 1700 and early 1800s any number of sports played on foot were known as football, in difference to sport on horseback or Cricket. What are know known as Football/Soccer and Rugby became quite popular and in order to avoid confusion were given nicknames. The soc in association lead to those playing the game to be called "Soccers" as opposed to "Ruggers" playing League or Union.

In Countries where rugby and the rugbyesque games that developed there from became the dominant sport are known as Football (Aussie rules, American, Canadian rules) andfor the most part kept calling Association Football Soccer. Where Association won it its obviously the colloquial Football.

As far as this forum goes I for one am going to keep using the term by the specific region; US, Canadian, Australian threads as there specific football, vs football as in association football for Europe, South America, Africa, Asia.

It's official name is association football which, like Rugby football, is shortened to football and rugby respectively. Futbol and futball are just translations yes?

The only exception you have to get used to is from Americans and Canadians who call it soccer. No-one likes it, but that's life - just live with it NMAISTER007 .

It looks too square. The interior design is very dissaponting imo. The exterior one I like it very much. Even if it is also too square, I like the poli-colour panels.

This one is an old picture... the opening game was USA vs Colombia and after it, Argentina vs Paraguay (Copa América), that's the reason why they painted those 4 flags.

This stadium has got too many names: Cabudare, Lara, Acarigua, Barquisimeto... Why don't they just call it "Hugo Chavez" to avoid confusions?

City: Cabudare, it's in the Metropolitan area of Barquisimeto, Lara State. Those aren't names, just tags.

So Cabudare is a city located in the metropolitan area of another city, Barquisimeto? A city inside of a city? Sorry, but "no comprende"... :dunno:

It's not that hard to comprehend really.

Like Santa Monica or Compton are both cities (I think), and then they're both in Los Angeles, also a city.

Well, it's a town with a population of ~200.000.

This stadium was "inaugurated" for the Copa America while it was unfinished. Now it is being "re-inaugurated" for the Top Festival and it is STILL unfinished. I suppose that when they finally finish it Hugo Chavez will declare a national holiday.

Rbs
October 30th, 2009, 05:17 AM
Well, it will be re-inagurated in January, there was a huge problem with the constructor, corruptcy, etc... then they started last March to finish it, now the stadium has 95%, allmost done.

More pics, this time from the top festival

I like it, love the steep pitch of the stands...But why is there a cage surrounding the field?

It gets a little intense in South America. Barbed wire fences and moats are the norm.

Yeah I forgot about that living in the civilized world :) I also marvel a the separate and sometimes caged off visitor sections in Europe, aren't they supposed to be civilized as well? I mean here, say at a Leafs Sabres game the worst that will happen is maybe Leafs fans getting beer poured over their heads

Most football stadiums have segregation. Things can get out of hand. People take their club associations very seriously in most corners of the footballing world. It may seem strange, but its quite normal. It is a miracle people in the US go to sporting events when it is normally bereft of any kind of atmosphere :)

Completely different culture. People in Europe will and do regularly fight for their club. Isn't it Galatasaray or Fenerbahce who's branded clothing slogan is 'Die/Kill for you' or something like that? There is massive hostility between fans and that is the reason for segregation. Usually, in the UK at least, it's just simple mouthing off and chanting though which all adds to the atmosphere.

Oh god you're going to set them off with that! Kind of true though from a European's perspective in what we consider an 'atmosphere' is completely non-existant in the US and vice-versa to a certain extent I guess.
