The first series is on Box Hill TAFT, which is the Australian equivalent of ITE. This one is about 30 mins drive from Melbourne CBD.
The second series is shot outside the Melbourne General Post Office (GPO). A big fire broke out a year or 2 ago and the interior was pretty badly damaged. It is now undergoing extensive renovation, extention, restoration, etc to transform into a commercial building(resaurants, shops, etc) The post office moved to the immediate building next to it.
RafflesCity March 5th, 2004, 05:12 AM Oh thanks:)

I'm not a big fan of skyscrapers but this is my favourite....... http://www.walkingmelbourne.com/building_profile.php?ID=468
140 William Street, Melbourne. The former BHP building. My final year project is sited diagonally across it. :)
RafflesCity March 5th, 2004, 05:36 AM The diagonal bracing on that building is distinctive. My favourite is Rialto Tower. Nothing great but the two blocks have an interesting interplay and the glass changes colour depending on the time of day:cool:
The spires of 101 Collins also looks quite cool at night.

The Rialto would be one of the better ones in Melbourne I think.
What I like about 140 William Street is its facade detailing. Very clean and almost 2D like. You can't see the frames of the windows. Steel and glass appears to be on 1 plane only. The building is originally conceived as a testimonial to BHP's products. They manufacture steel components.

I didn't quite like the convention centre either. Done by SOM, the very same people doing Terminal 3 so cross yer fingers.....
I'm still rendering some of my stuff. So earliest I'll post some by this weekend.

Erm nope. That one was taken with a wide angle zoom lens. Actually I don't own any of those lenses I mentioned over there, still saving up. I borrowed, rented, etc them in Aussie though.

Maybe I should add watermarks..... Yeah it wold be best to do so. I didnt post mine, since I tend to hotlink them from s.com, which dosent allow watermarking. I would have to find a picturehost of my own then, which is too tedious.
Kit March 5th, 2004, 05:31 PM I signed up for this as heirloom recommended....... http://www.photobucket.com/ Very easy and hassle free.

Huh? Orhhh..... a wide angle zoom lens is a lens that covers a range of focal length that's considered in the wide range. In this case, I used a 17-40 zoom lens.
There are 3 popular zoom lenses that almost all major manufacturer offer............ as follows.........
Wide angle zoom --- 15/16/17 - 35/40
Standard zoom --- 28 - 70
Telephoto zoom --- 70/80 - 200
Another one that's not as popular but still a number of people using would be the 80/100 - 400 class of zoom lens.
As you can see, all these lenses kinda overlap each other to ensure seamless coverage of focal lengths from 15 - 500 for most photographic applications.
huaiwei March 5th, 2004, 06:42 PM Just to double check....a wide angle obviously means u can see more in your lens, and a telephoto only a small range but closed up?
So those numbers actually mean focal lenght, btw?
Sory for all thse super elementary questions. As you can see, I would rather ask u here then get ppl mad over in the other forum. :D
Kit March 5th, 2004, 06:45 PM No worries. We all have to start somewhere...
Yup, those numbers are focal length. Smaller the number, the wider the coverage. The bigger the number, the narrower the coverage.
Kit March 5th, 2004, 06:47 PM Other than the more popular lense that I've listed out, there are a few that goes a little wider or with a bit more reach like the......
Nikkor(Nikon) 12-24
Sigma 12-24 / 15-30 and 50-500
huaiwei March 5th, 2004, 06:51 PM Thanks for the info....
So when you use a wide angle on a skyscraper, it actually helps to bring the entire building into the picture is it? I was actually expecting some form of distortion around the edges of the photo or something.....maybe I was thinking of fish-eye lenses instead. :D

No, you're right. All wide angle lenses have certain degree of distortion. Cannot escape as this is the nature of wide angles. Another form of distortion which is usuallt associated with wide lenses is barrel distortion. This will depend on how well the lens is designed. The better(and often the more expensive ones) will have less of this problem. The fisheye lenses.......... well, think of them as having a really bad case of barrel distortion.
Kit March 5th, 2004, 07:01 PM Almost forgot, if you're using DSLRs like the 10D or 300D with a cropping factor, you most likely won't be able to see any barrel distortion as the edges have already been cropped off.

And are DSRLS basically WYSIWYG? ie if I were to look into the view-finder, it will have blocked out the areas which will be cropped? Or so I have to mentally be aware of my photo not having the exact same cropping as I see it in the viewfinder?
btw, if I am cluttering your thread up with all these, and you dont want them here, feel free to protest and I will get raffi to move these over to your "take pictures" thread...or shall we just move over instead? ;)

Unless you get the flagships, you're never getting a 100% viewfinder. Applies to all SLRs, film or digital. On the 10D, I think its about 92% - 95%. However, the review on the back LCD is close if not 100%
Kit March 5th, 2004, 07:32 PM I have no preference. Anything's fine. Or maybe can start a new thread on equipment alone?

Haha... ok. Here goes.
If I remembered correctly(this is about 3 years ago), the studio apartment is about 25 - 30 m.sq. That would be quiet a standard size for studio apartments in an urban setting. My own apartment in Melbourne was about 26 m.sq. The studio apartment you see is bigger than an average hotel room.
Ungracious Living is designed on a residual site (in between 2 buildings) that measures 3.5m in width and 22m in length. The challenge is to fit 4 apartments onto the site. This project investigates living minimally (not taking up more space than you should). A study showed that a person on average only requires about 22% of the space that he/she is using currently. Each apartment consists of 4 1.8m x 1.5m living pods and are accessed with staircases. Staircases are used to circulate the building and are designed to the extend of being "pervous" some may say. That's one of the main idea of this design studio. To investigate the limitations and potential of staircases. The other objective as mentioned before, is to see how much you can design on a restricted site.
heirloom March 7th, 2004, 11:17 AM why... didnt.... you.... die... of ... claustrophobiaaa.........:dizzy:
the smallest studio apartment i've seen in sg was 587 sqft i think... thank goodness for that...
but i dont understand why not just flat apartments? will having apartments on different levels save space? how bout that little triangle at the bottom? what's that used for?

Actually 25 - 30 sq.m. is quite comfortable for single living. If it's ok for an archi student, its ok for everyone.:D You should see my stuff!!! Actually, all it takes is a bit of organisational skills.
Are you talking about Ungracious Living? The reason why the apartments were staggered is due to the design of the staircases. The set of staircases you see on the front are only internal staircases used within the apartment. There is another set of staricases behind the concrete wall that let you assess the apartments from ground level. The pods were staggered to "meet" up with that main set of staircase. If not, you won't be able to reach the pods and will be banging your head against staircases.
The components (triangle, etc) are parts of the structure that holds up the pods. The pods are suspended by stainless steel tension cables from the top and are anchored at the bottom.

Have you? You obviously cant be speaking Singlish over there so how does it sound like when you speak?
heirloom March 9th, 2004, 12:53 AM no i haven't... and thank goodness i dont think i'm the type that can pick up accents... i got really appalled with myself when i said 'seeya' for the first time haha and am making a conscious effort not to :) dont like aussie accent.. a bit like.. texas drawl... just a bit... i speak.. sterile singlish? no lar or lor but the singapore accent is there. you have brit accent?
RafflesCity March 9th, 2004, 01:04 AM Nope. But when I speak to non-Singaporeans I try to pronounce everything properly and try to make it sound more tonal - to get better understood of course. However I do use some local British terms like bollocks and cheers..suits the context I guess:D
Kit March 9th, 2004, 10:00 AM Yeah it has become a second nature. Singlish can be switched on and off depending on who you're speaking to.
eyetoeye March 9th, 2004, 10:29 AM Still off topic. I've a friend in Melbourne who's been in OZ since 1996-8(forgot). He has quite a strong Aussie accent now. When he visited last Christmas we had a bloody difficcult time trying to figure out what he was trying to say. ;)
I really despise Asians who try to adopt 'western' accents simply because they think it's 'cool' or 'in' or something. Argh.... If you've actually lived overseas it ain't so bad, but if you've been in Singapore all your life or visited the country for only a week, then i get really pissed....
Kit March 9th, 2004, 11:28 AM Ever heard of someone picking up a fake yankee accent after spending a month there on holidays? Yup, it actually happened.
eyetoeye March 9th, 2004, 11:55 AM Yes. I've heard it happen. My friend is just like that. She acts all posh and sophisticated and can speak in more accents thatn probably exist, including 'yankee', Can't stand her.
heirloom March 9th, 2004, 12:26 PM eew yankee is really one accent you shouldnt pick up... it makes my skin crawl.... i like singlish - it's a much more efficient variation of english to communicate in :D we say in three or four words what they use 20 words to say and we get the message across just as clearly. but i always thought i might go for elocution lessons one day though... see if i can pick up the 'original' english just for fun... would also like to learn latin :D
RafflesCity March 9th, 2004, 01:31 PM Maybe we should speak like the newsreaders. Unaccented but clear and understandable:cheers: Its usually the radio DJs that like to put on accents.
heirloom March 9th, 2004, 01:38 PM ppl like to poach singapore newsreaders :D

Taken this quite some time back but I think I used a 6 secs exposure with f11 aperture. I did however darken the image by a 1 stop in post editing though.

Seriously artistic I must say. Really nice inspiration of how to use aperture settings.
I always avoided manually setting aperature settings since I don't really know how much different the settings affect the end result. Recently I've been playing with it, and I've screwed up many photos, most of my most wanted shots are underexposed. But I'll try getting it right the next few photo sessions or so. :)
Kit August 11th, 2004, 05:30 PM Its not that difficult. If your camera comes with aperture priority or Av mode, I recommend you use it. Set the aperture manually and the camera will pick a suitable shutter speed for you, hence the correct exposure. For insurance, bracket your shots both ways. Take one shot with the shutter speend recommended by your camera. Take 2 more shots dialing + and -.

These days, I'm playing with total manual. The right combination is kinda hard to get right, well for me that is. Anyway, I use film, so I can't just take shots to test out water. :D

Which camera are you using. Most film SLRs would come equipped with an exposure meter bar to aid exposure even in full manual mode to eliminate guessing.

Canon EOS 88. Yes it has a meter bar and I've set the settings slightly to overexpose it a little. But I used too small an aperture and too long a shutter speed, so the parts where there is sparse light appears total black and the place where there is light appear overly bright. Sigh...

You've given me the impression that your image had over exposed and underexposed at the same time and frankly, I can't imagine that happening at all. Would like to see the pics and study what really happened.
