View Full Version : Espanyol Captain dies of heart attack. Only 26
ChilenoFutbol August 8th, 2009, 10:56 PM Espanyol skipper Dani Jarque dies of heart attack: reports
(AFP) – 37 minutes ago
MADRID — The skipper of Spanish top flight side Espanyol, Dani Jarque, has died from a heart attack while on a pre-season training camp in Italy, Spanish media reported Saturday.
The 26-year-old Jarque was reported to have died at the hotel where the team were staying in the town of Coviciana. He was found after teammates realised he had not shown for a meal.
Espanyol did not immediately confirm the news.
Jarque's death comes two years after the death, also from heart failure, of Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta, who died aged 22 after having collapsed during the opening game of the Spanish La Liga season.
DennisRodman97 August 8th, 2009, 11:27 PM so sad ...this guy joins the likes of marc vivian foe.
^Anton^ August 9th, 2009, 01:51 AM I really don't understand how this kind of thing still happens... I know it seems heartless to speculate about drugs at this point but... if that's what's causing these deaths (it's not the first time it happens), people should know and start taking it more seriously... I personally find it hard to believe that a 26 y/o proffesional athlete just dies of heart failure...
It's really sad though, apparently his gf was 7 month pregnant... it's just awful..
ChilenoFutbol August 9th, 2009, 03:09 AM i wouldnt speculate, marc vivian foe's death wasnt drug related it was Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (got that off of wikipedia). miklos feher died of a heart attack (i coundlt find the cause and antonio puerta's death was from a genetic disease. i think its just that they push themselves too hard and their heart cant keep up now if u combine that with some type of drug its nearly suicidal
DennisRodman97 August 9th, 2009, 06:20 AM so sad....
juzzy August 9th, 2009, 10:18 AM the problem with sportsmen is that they still do physical activity when they have a cold or flu etc... what that does is cause the heart to swell since the body is run down after being sick and with the extra need of the heart having to pump harder when doing cardio exercise the heart swells and gets tired and unable to pump blood to the body = HEART ATTACK
the same thing happened to a 19 year old rugby player from ireland who collapsed when playing a match in durban a few years back
Its called acute myocarditis, and from acute myocarditis it develops into cardiomyopathies. go look it up but dont look on wiki. thats a load of crap
briker August 9th, 2009, 11:01 AM so some unknown person dies. And what's it with us??
DennisRodman97 August 9th, 2009, 11:06 AM briker u are a scumbag and hope u are next to die of such a thing
african biohazard August 9th, 2009, 11:23 AM Easy guys - lets keep it civil. Look, as someone in the medical field I can tell you that on average, this is bound to happen to somebody. The overall incident of this is still very very low, especially in sports people.

Higher morbidity in sports-people than the average Joe if I remember correctly.
african biohazard August 9th, 2009, 06:46 PM ^^ yes maybe, not sure about that. I do know that with sports people, there's probably some fundamental underlying problem. Still not sure what the cause is in this case.
briker August 9th, 2009, 07:28 PM briker u are a scumbag and hope u are next to die of such a thing
No dearest, you won't find me running after a ball till my heart stops. That's just a dumb thing that dumb okes do. And hasn't he heard of warm-ups?
^Anton^ August 9th, 2009, 07:28 PM Then again... not to disrespect soccer or anything, but soccer players are not exactly the most dedicated or challenged sportsmen... I just don't see it likely for a healthy person to die of a heart attack at such a young age...
Also, I don't know much about soccer, but would someone suffering from some kind of cardiomiopathy be a proffesional sportsman?
^Anton^ August 9th, 2009, 07:30 PM briker u are a scumbag and hope u are next to die of such a thing
I got nothing personal against you and you know it, but I wonder how you're still running around SSC when you systematically insult everybody that disagrees with you.
We can all call names Dennis, and it doesn't make your point any more valid.
GetDownAdam August 9th, 2009, 08:19 PM ^^ yes maybe, not sure about that. I do know that with sports people, there's probably some fundamental underlying problem. Still not sure what the cause is in this case.
You're 100% right. What irks me a bit is that the little digging I've done on this guy, people automatically assume that hypertrophy must mean steroids or cocaine which is an insult to sports fans and the players. This guy was obviously good at what he did and to die at 26 is a hell of a shame.
african biohazard August 9th, 2009, 09:04 PM Yes, indeed it is a shame. I remember the Marc Vivien Foe incident very well and it shook the sports world back then. Unlike with maybe cycling and athletics, where performance enhancement has caused a number of high-profile early-onset conditions, we should hold judgment with football/soccer cases - unless new info points to drugs which I doubt.
^Anton^ August 9th, 2009, 11:48 PM Well, then what are doing people like him in professional sport, when it obviously poses a big risk to their health...
Reggae Boyz Ja August 10th, 2009, 06:22 AM someone post a pic of the guy i forget what he looks like..
Andrew_za August 10th, 2009, 05:15 PM The guy is blue, next to the legendary fernando torres

haggiesm August 11th, 2009, 09:54 AM heart failure among young guys is not that uncommon. my brother had a friend who was unbelievably fit and just died suddenly of heart failure when he was 28. it just happens.
Durbsboi August 11th, 2009, 10:25 AM Shame to hear, its hard to predict what can happen. A person can be at their peak physically but any small thing can change things in a second.

It happens often under fit, young men in their 20's. Reason being, influenza is very common and contrary to what most people know, the flu puts tremendous strain on you heart. It is not fatal, as long as you do not put the heart under stress during the onset of symptoms, while ill and for at least a week after the last symptoms subside.
The reason fit, young men are prone: Bravado and an uncontrolable urge to get back "into action." Doing heavy cardio-exercise during that "flu window" can prove too much stress for the cardiovascular system, resulting in fatal heart-attack.
haggiesm August 12th, 2009, 08:03 AM ^^ good point.

I have seen football stats where the average midfield player covers around 7-8 km in a match would that also affect them? .The hyper ones like Gerrard probably do 8-10 in a single match
haggiesm August 13th, 2009, 11:51 AM and pienaar sometimes goes up to 12 km.
annman August 13th, 2009, 12:03 PM ^^ Influenza's tends to stress the heart in all individuals as far as I know, irrespective of the level of fitness. But, since fit people tend to want to return to the cardio and the gym too quick, often you hear of the fitter guys dying of flu-related heart attacks.
juzzy August 13th, 2009, 03:58 PM double post

its called Acute myocarditis ( Swelling of the heart) Which then leads to either a cardiomyopathy or heart failure... If youre sick or just come off the flu...dont do anything...REST!!!
