Ericeira is a town of about 7 000 inhabitants located some 40km to the northwest of Lisbon. It was recognized as a municipality in the early 13th century and given special rights regarding its fishermen. Giving its location, fishing was, until the second half of the 20th century, the town's most important activity. Whaling was also an important activity during the middle-ages. Nowadays it is part of the Mafra municipality.
From the late 19th century until the early 20th century, the Portuguese nobility from the Lisbon region was very fond of the town and the townsfolk were strongly partisans of the royal family. When a republican uprising overthrew the monarchy in 1910 and the authorities intended to arrest the royal family, the population of Ericeira sheltered them and helped in their escape to England.
Despite the town's small size, it developed a significant economic activity thanks to its harbour. During the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, Ericeira housed the 4th custom's post in the kingdom, after Lisbon, Porto and Setúbal and it covered a very wide area of the Portuguese coast.
The town's harbour started to lose importance in the last decades of the 19th century but the growing number of visitors during the summer started to make tourism an important activity. In the second half of the 20th century, the growing numbers of tourism accelerated the weight of the tourism industry in the town, as the fishing industry started to contract.
The seawater in Ericeira is considered to have a very high concentration of iodine, which contributes to its intense smell and was recognized to have therapeutical qualities - indeed, in the past, many doctors would recommend a stay in this town for people with respiratory problems.
Personally, I'm very fond of this town - I've been there on holiday every year when I was a kid. Afterwards we started going to other places and I didn't visit Ericeira for about 15 years - I returned twice in the last month driven by curiosity and to re-experience childhood memories and the result surprised me, as I must say the town is in a much better condition than when I was a kid; the streets are much cleaner, the town is generally better organized, the beaches are taken better care of and the variety of restaurants is much wider, it seems the local administration has taken a lot of care in improving quality of life in the town.
Regarding the climate and sea conditions, I'd say it is an "average" town in the west coast of Portugal - meaning, chilly waters, strong winds [stronger in August than in July] and a sea that imposes some respect to the visitors, to the point of several beaches being almost completly covered when the tide rises.
