This is a serie of pictures I have made in the Rhein-Ruhr area. But my German is not so good, I will use English in this thread. Comments and suggestions are welcome! :)

The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region (German: Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr) is the largest metropolitan area in Germany with about 11,800,000 inhabitants. It is of polycentric nature and the only megacity in Germany. It covers an area of 10,820 square kilometers and lies entirely within the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region spreads from the Dortmund-Essen-Duisburg (Ruhr Area) megalopolis in the north, to the urban areas of the cities of Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf (the state capital), Wuppertal, Cologne (the region's largest and Germany's fourth largest city), and Bonn in the south.

Thanks for all the comments!

In the second part of our trip we will go the the northern part of the Rhine-Ruhr area. We will visit the most industrial city of the Ruhr area, Duisburg. But first, we will view the area from the 70 meter tall slag heap Halde Rheinpreußen in Moers. This slag heap is transformed into a park and is located near the rivier Rhine and very close to the city Duisburg. Enjoy the views!

Note: because these pics were made in Moers, which is part of the Kreis (a type of country subdivision) Wesel, the pics are encoded with 'WES'. Just like the previous pictures of Dusseldorf were encoded with 'D'. This kind of encoding is also used on German license plates.
Some other examples, pictures made in Duisburg will be encoded with 'DU', pics made in Bottrop with 'BOT' etc.

WES 01) View towards the north. This is the urban edge of the Ruhr area. Notice the many green areas. This is not uncommon in the Ruhr area and we will see that this urban area isn't quite dense. It is sprawling and green.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2260/3607613602_9732c900c0_b.jpg

WES 02) The coal-fired powerplant Voerde (Kraftwerk in German), located just north of Duisburg. For those who like facts, the chimneys are 230. 240 and 250 meters tall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3645/3607605996_8c63222fd7_b.jpg

WES 03) Just a few kilometers to the south of Voerde we can find Kraftwerk Walsum. This coal-fired powerplant is located next to an active coalmine and is part of the city district Walsum of Duisburg. The chimney is 300 m tall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3298/3606728197_424bd14527_b.jpg

WES 04) A view towards the gigantic complex of ThyssenKrupp. This is one of the two still active steelmills in the Ruhr area. All blast furnaces in the Ruhr are now located in Duisburg. 49% of all hot metal and 34.4% of all pig-iron in Germany is produced here.
On the left side of the picture we can see a hill. This is also a slag heap, named Halde Haniel in Bottrop and is 159 m tall. This is the tallest slag heap in the Ruhr area. Most slag heaps in the area are transformed into parks and are open for public.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3621/3606712179_31d23d6718_b.jpg

WES 05)Ah, some employees of ThyssenKrupp enjoy their smoke break. Oh yeah, these chimneys are also 300 m tall. Notice the powerplant in the background, somewhere on the left side of the pic. That one is located in Gelsenkirchen.

Autobahn 42 connects Kamp-Lintfort with Castrop-Rauxel, linking several large cities in the Ruhr area, such as Dortmund,Duisburg, the North of Essen and Gelsenkirchen. It is colloquially known as Emscherschnellweg, after the river Emscher, which it roughly follows.
The bridge is named Beeckerwerther Brücke and has a length of 1030 m.

WES 10) The industrial character of Duisburg is symbolized with the 200 m tall chimney in the citycenter.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2441/3607559420_e62d14c185_b.jpg

WES 11) A view towards the city discticts Rheinhausen and Homberg. Until administrative reorganisation in 1975 Rheinhausen had been an independent city and was part of Moers. Since 1975 it is a citydistrict of Duisburg. Many German cities, especially in the Ruhr area are the result of administrative reorganisations.

WES 13) A view towards the south. We can see the city of Moers, on the left we can see a part of Duisburg and on the right side the chemical complex of Bayer in Krefeld is visible. When the weather conditions are excellent, Dusseldorf will be visible.

Duisburg

Duisburg is a German city in the western part of the Ruhr Area (Ruhrgebiet) in North Rhine-Westphalia. With the world's biggest inland harbour and its proximity to Düsseldorf International Airport, Duisburg has become an important venue for commerce and steel production.
Being a major logistical center in the Ruhr and location of chemical, steel and iron industries, Duisburg was a primary target of Allied bombers. As such, it is considered by some historians to be the single most heavily bombed German city by the Allies during World War II. A total of 299 bombing raids had almost completely destroyed the historic cityscape. 80% of all residential buildings had been destroyed or partly damaged. Almost the whole of the city had to be rebuilt, and most historic landmarks had been lost.
Today's city is a result of numerous incorporations of surrounding towns and smaller cities. It is the twelfth-largest city in Germany and the fifth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia with 495,668 residents as of 31 December 2007. The city is renowned for its steel industry. There is still one coal mine in operation, but Duisburg has never been a coal-mining center to the same extent as other places in the Ruhr. All blast furnaces in the Ruhr are now located in Duisburg. 49% of all hot metal and 34.4% of all pig-iron in Germany is produced here (as of 2000).

Great stuff! The Duisburg harbour area has some really interesting architecture to offer :)

There's a "living bridge" project in the pipeline. Does anyone know if it's going ahead?

Duisburg-Homberg

Homberg is a district of Duisburg on the western bank of the river Rhine. It's population is 31,000.

DU 15) The Rheinbrücke Neuenkamp has a length of 777 meter and connects the citycenter with Homberg and Rheinhausen. This Autobahn 40 is one of the most frequented Autobahns in Germany because it connects almost all major cities of the Ruhr area. It has officially been named Ruhrschnellweg (Ruhr fast way), but locals usually call it Ruhrschleichweg (Ruhr crawling way) or simply "the Ruhr area's longest parking lot". According to Der Spiegel, it is the most congested motorway in Germany.

These are really really amazing pics!

Next stop: Bottrop!

Bottrop

Bottrop is a city in west central Germany, on the Rhine-Herne Canal, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Located in the Ruhr industrial area, Bottrop adjoins Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck and Dorsten. The city had been a coal-mining and rail center and contains factories producing coal-tar derivatives, chemicals, textiles, and machinery. Bottrop grew as a mining center beginning in the 1860s, was chartered as a city in 1921, and bombed during the Oil Campaign of World War II. In 1975 it unified with the neighbour communities of Gladbeck and Kirchhellen, but Gladbeck left it in 1976, leading to Kirchhellen becoming a district of Bottrop as Bottrop-Kirchhellen.
Bottrop has the longest stretch of autobahn without junctions which is often used for testing vehicles at high speed, and is home to the famous Mercedes-Benz tuning company Brabus.

A few pictures made in the citycenter of Bottrop. The city itself is not very interesting or beautiful.

The Ruhr area seen from the Tetraeder. Notice the amount of green in this urban area. Because of the low and middle high (building and population) densities you wouldn't get the feeling this is Germany's largest urban area.

BOT 11) View towards the west. We can see the citycenter of Bottrop and in the background the steelcomplex of ThyssenKrupp in Duisburg is visible.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3644/3612965555_34067c174c_b.jpg

BOT 12) The same view, now with some more zoom. On the right the cityhall of Bottrop is visible, the church and tower in the center are located in Oberhausen (200.000).

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3320/3613817336_b2e026e29f_b.jpg

BOT 13) This view is more towards the northwestern part of the Ruhr area. On the right, in the background the coal powered powerplant in Duisburg-Walsum is visible, which is located at a distance of 17,5 km.

BOT 16) A view towards the north.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3335/3613153893_678f5d0ff6_b.jpg

BOT 17) This is the view towards the north-east. The gigantic powerplant is located in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven and the chimneys are 300 m tall. The hill is Halde Oberhscholven, a slagheap with a height of 130 m. The city in front of the powerplant is Gladbeck (75,000).

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3402/3613064075_e4a9e32f24_b.jpg

BOT 18) If we take a look futher to the east, we can see the soccer stadium Veltins Arena of Schalke'04 in Gelsenkirchen. This arena is located at a distance of 8 km from the Tetraeder.
Just right of the stadium the old winding tower of coalmine Zeche Ewald in Herten (63.000) is visible. More impressive the fact that the powerplant in Datteln, located at a distance of 30 km(!) is visible.

BOT 19) A chemical complex in Gelsenkirchen and the powerplant in Herne (167.000). Notice the green area's.
