Mayor Hardberger saw Voelcker Park as a prime opportunity for a major park in one of the few remaining undeveloped parcels in San Antonio. The 311-acre purchase allowed the city to establish an oasis in a densely developed area surrounded by subdivisions, freeways and shopping centers.
Positioned in the heart of one of San Antonio’s major population centers, Voelcker Park is envisioned as a new central park for the city. The goal is to create a park that offers ample and varied recreational opportunities to all of San Antonio’s citizens, while simultaneously celebrating the natural beauty of the space and preserving as much of the original landscape and vegetation as possible.
The hope for this park is that it will be a popular destination for San Antonio’s residents for the next 200+ years. It should provide a convenient means of escape from the urban environment into the serenity of the wilderness. It should also be a place that encourages health: mental, spiritual, and physical. San Antonio wants to encourage healthy lifestyles and activities for all its residents.
In meeting this goal, the City of San Antonio has conducted a series of public input meetings in order to give citizens the opportunity to participate in the master planning process for Voelcker Park. After extensive site analysis and a series of community meetings, the Voelcker Park Master Plan was adopted by City Council on May 8, 2008
