I went to school with Keith Galloway, who scored the only try for the sharks. I remember back in primary school how everyone believed he was going to succed in league - and he's finally done it.:)

Keith has also represented the state in league in youth competitions and also was an Australian Schoolboys representative back in 2002 touring the UK. He also played league for the school - the same one that fellow Sharks player Jason Stevens went to which was Marist College Kogarah. He also played in junior comps for the Brighton Seagulls (Jason Stevens played there), Mascot in the South Sydney comp and Yarrawarrah in the Cronulla comp, which would see him at the Sharks

There's more I could say about him, but i'd go on forever.

That was a pretty good performance by the dragons last night especially since Barrett and Gasiner were out for the match.

Barrett unfortuantely is out for a month with a leg injury of some sort. :bash: Not good for the dragons at all, and hopefully they can do well without him like they did last night.

Gasiner is also thinking of quitting too. He is also 22 like Jamie Lyons. Hope he decides to stay.

Panthers were too good for hapless Roosters 22-6. I was very lucky to go to the game last night after reciving free tickets. I thought both sides played quite well but the panthers were lucky to break through their defences. Adrian Moorley is on report over a high tackle and Swain ended up having three teeth knocked out during the first half. The Roosters also missed some opportunities to score as well. The Panthers also had a new home crowd record of 25 852. I was expecting 50 000 out there as someone told me that many were going.

Here are some pix I took

hapless??? wtf
roosters would of cleaned up the panthers last night if they had there full team! seems everyone has forgotten about craig wing? probably the best utility player in the world. Roosters really need him to set up play.
also 2 more players are out injured and only 20mins into first half Craig fitzsimmons was taken off due to injury. he is a major forward. with out the 4-5 players its hard to perform at best. im sure if panthers were without Gower, wesser, campbell ect.. they would not of played there best. I still think Roosters are the team to beat this year. lets see what happens when there side is back to full strength!!!

Shannon Hegarty, Chris flannery,Craig Wing,Craig Fitzgibbons,Adrian Morely,Micheal Crocker,Jason cayless and Stuart Webb!!!!!

cul, dont go knocking the broncos too much, sure last season they had a end of season slump, but that was obviously not the broncos of old... i cant see the broncos playing worse in the second half of the seasons this year, actually i can see them playing better. Theve fielded teams with like 5players uner 19 already this season...these guys should prevent the broncos from failing, firstly they wont suffer as much player burnout and secondly, there young so there only going to get better.

-Corey Parker
-Karmichael Hunt
-Motu Tony
-Sam Thaiday
these guys are the future of the broncos

The Sharks have been performing poorly against struggling teams and are now at the bottom of the ladder. They were smashed by the cowboys last night and copped a big hiding by the rabbitohs the week before. What's been in the water down at Cronulla???? Or could it be just the fact that the struggling teams such South Sydney have managed to find some form.

Amazing day for the dragons. They were two points down just after halftime and would end up 26 points in front. A few records also fell. The crowd record was broken as 18 971 went to see them play and Matt Cooper scored four tries, the most scored by any dragon in a match.

Aussies win ANZAC Test
by: Mark Fowler
Sportal

A dominant second-half performance has helped Australia to a 37-10 win over New Zealand in the ANZAC Test at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle.

The Aussies ran in seven tries to two, Anthony Minichiello, Timana Tahu, Brent Tate, Darren Lockyer, Craig Gower, Michael De Vere and Michael Crocker all crossing for the home side, despite only going into the break 11-10 up thanks to a late Lockyer field goal.

Australia went behind after just six minutes when David Kidwell crossed after being set up well by Thomas Leuluai. Sione Faumuina converted to give the Kiwis a 6-0 lead.

Minichiello grabbed his team’s first try just four minutes later following a Shane Webcke offload, but the Kiwis went 10-4 ahead on 18 minutes when Lesley Vainikolo charged over from a scrum after Minichiello knocked on.

Tahu then got Australia back in the game on his home ground following a fine kick by Matthew Gidley, and when De Vere converted it was 10-10.

Clinton Toopi bombed a certain try, going himself despite having a number of players in support, and Lockyer made him pay with a late one-pointer.

A tight opening to the second half was broken when the outstanding Tate crossed, pushing off Toopi in the process, and although De Vere missed the conversion to keep the Kiwis within a converted try, the Aussies then ran away with the game.

Lockyer crossed three minutes later after Nigel Vagana knocked on, and 10 minutes later Gower went over. De Vere strode over on 70 minutes, putting the Aussies 31-10 up, and Lockyer then set up Crocker for a late try to give his side a 27-point winning margin.

New Zealand played for much of the game with only 15 men as Nathan Cayless and Robbie Paul were forced off with early injuries, although Paul was able to return midway through the second half.

Australia 37
Tries: Minichiello, Tahu, Tate, Gower, Crocker, Lockyer, De Vere
Conversions: De Vere 4
Drop goals: Lockyer 1

New Zealand 10
Tries: Kidwell, Vainikolo
Conversions: Faumuina

its great to see the broncos going the way they are... there were critics everwhere saying this would be the "re-building year" and how there "nothing like the broncos of old".. yet the last few games and especially the one against the panthers proved how good they are and theres quite a few people who reckon its like the broncos of old. And considering how young many of the players in the team are i think this may be the beginning of a great season.

It was the second largest crowd for the broncos since the stadium opened and they topped the brisbane lions crowd by something like 3'800...

only one position i dont agree with in the queensland team and thats paul bowman. he has to be the most boring player ever. the rest of the back 5 are choc a block full of excitement. between wesser, hodges, tate and slater there are some worries for nsw

"The Leader" is reporting that the Bulldogs Braith Ansta is set to move to Union and is expected to join Southern Districts in the Sydney Rugby Competition and play for the Waratahs.

Fabian for starters, "the leader" or whatever still has a year left on his contract with the bulldogs meaning he wont be able to move till the end of 2005, unless given a release. As for being expected to move, well thats bullshit, cause at the moment he has called the QLD Reds for a contract, and i havent heard to much about the Waratahs yet, yet just cause his a NRL player doesnt mean that the Super 12 teams are gonna drop everything to grab him.

Fabian
May 21st, 2004, 05:19 AM
That is what Southern Districts are claiming at the moment and also it is stated that his contract ends this year. Southern Districts is where Waratah and Wallaby player Mat Rodgers plays.

Also I'm disgusted by Mark Gasiner's behaviour over the phone sex incident with Minichello's mobile phone. In addition to being kicked out of the origin side, he has been suspended from the Dragons indefinately and will cop a fine. Apparently more Blues players are believed to be involved and they will also cop similar punishments when they are named.

It's disappointing he cannot play against Parramatta tonight, but he has to be punished for his actions. Some guys just have no idea about how to treat women. Being the main goal kicker for the dragons, it will make beating Parramatta pretty tough. With 12 players out due to injury (Barrett, Blacklock etc) or origin it will make things even tougher for the dragons. They will fire back like they always do.

Fabian

Minichello is now suspended and out and a couple of others were fined for their involvement as well. Willie Peters, Ten News League reporter was fuming over the whole thing during a crossover during the news last night. believing league had hit a new low and hadn't seen anything like it. He called for tougher rules to bring them into line "just like everyone else"

And Brisbane got their two points back at a cost of $75 000

As for the beleagued Dragons, well they didn't let the Gasiner saga along with the dozen or so absentees wreck their performance. Nathan Blacklock's last minute addition paid off, and halfback Matthew Head was the main player setting up a number of tries. Riddell also played very well.

In the end the dragons cleaned up the eels

St George 37
Parramatta 6

And I can say that the Dragons are back on fire. Bring on the finals!!!!!

It was good to see Mark Gasiner in top form again , scoring two tries for the Dragons during Friday night's narrow loss to Brisbane. It could of been alot worse for the dragons. I wasn't expecting a win seeing the game was in Brisbane and St George have never virtually won up there. Maybe if they had Barrett and co, it could of been a big upset.

Also there are calls for coach Brian Smith to be sacked following their latest loss. Fans have just had enough of Parramatta's woes. As for former Eel, Jamie Lyon (I got it right this time), he will be released to play for Wee Waa. There is speculation some NRL clubs might be chasing him as well.

TOCC

Jamie Lyon is only being released to play for Wee Waa, he wont be allowed to play for another NRL club until his given a release. Which Parramatta? isnt going to do...

Broncos may not face the mid seasons slump like they usaully do, with players like Lockyer, Tallis, Webke, Shaun Berrigan not playing as many games as they did this time last year, theres every chance the broncos will breaze through it.

Also, Karmichael Hunt, who my brother is friends with is a absolute Sensation up here in Brissie aat the moment. His still only 17 and has started ever Broncos match this season. He only left high school last year from one of Brisbanes top Rugby Union playing schools. His already scored 6 tries this seasons, tied for top try-scorer with 2 other players. He was selected to play for the kiwis in the last international, but said no so he could play State of Origin in Australia. People reckon he has the potential to be the best FB in the world, who better to teach him the ropes then Darren Lockyer.

His practically has a collum written on him each week in the paper, and last Sunday the front sports page just had a picture of him with "Special K" written across it.

And to think just last year he was running out and playing my brother in schools rugby union.

this also goes for Parra! its not the coach! its the bloody players!!

Rabbitohs axe Langmack

Sportal

South Sydney has sacked coach Paul Langmack after a long board meeting to discuss his future.

The club's chairman Nick Pappas has named Arthur Kitinas as caretaker coach.

"The board of South Sydney met tonight and resolved that Paul Langmack be excused immediately from all his duties with the club as head coach," the club explained in a statement released late on Tuesday.

"Paul's contract with the club gives the club the right to excuse him from providing his services and the board has resolved that it is in the best interests of the club, its players and supporters that this occur immediately."

Souths are on the bottom of the ladder with just two wins and a draw after 12 rounds, but Pappas did thank Langmack for his efforts.

"On behalf of the board of directors, I thank Paul for the effort he has shown and wish him well in the future," he said.

Pappas is already looking to a better future, throwing his support behind the caretaker coach.

"I know that Arthur Kitinas and the players will rise to the challenge and do their very best for the club for the remainder of the 2004 season," he said.

"I call on all South Sydney supporters to show their support for the club, as they have done so many times in the past, by coming out in strong numbers for the club's next home match against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday," he said.

Langmack is the second Souths coach to be sacked in as many years, with the first coach Craig Coleman, shown the door before the start of the 2003 season.

Coleman stuck with the club when Souths were kicked out of the comp before the 2000 season.

He coached the team through 2002 when they rejoined the NRL, but was shown the door in the off-season after poor form in the club's trial matches.

Langmack took over at the start of the 2003 season, but the side still finished last, eight points adrift of Manly and the Wests Tigers.

Fittler's NSW return
Sportal

Roosters veteran Brad Fittler is set to return to State of Origin after a meeting with New South Wales coach Phil Gould.

The Blues are in desperate need for a number six with several injuries to key players, and Fittler told ABC Radio that Gould had asked him to return.

New South Wales won the first match thanks to a field-goal from five-eighth Shaun Timmons, but he was considered a temporary measure and is also under an injury cloud.

Fittler, who earlier this year announced he would retire at season's end, hasn’t played State of Origin since 2001.

He was the youngest person to play Origin for NSW, and he captained the side 14 times from 1994 to 2001, as well as making 15 other appearances.

Went to the SCG yesterday to watch the dragons match. I was expecting a good fight from Souths, but the dragons just demolished them in the first 25 mins. It was good to see the Rabbits fight back late in the half but in the end they were overwhelmed.

There was a great crowd there as well - 24 000 with 15 000 already there an hour before the match and the atmosphere was fairly good. All Souths Vs St George matches should be played there from now on. Aussie Stadium cannot rack up the crowds, atmosphere and the tradition associated with the rivalry

I hear Storm won again.

Btw, is it a top 8 or top 6 playoff. I think its top 8. But dont you think top 8 is a bit much for a 15 team comp? I mean its possible to lose more than you win and still make the finals. Take a look at the Canberra Raiders who currently sit in 8th spot. They have won 7 and lost 8. Isnt the finals (or play offs) about getting the best performed teams of the season and making them square off against eachother to decide the champion?

Fabian
June 28th, 2004, 03:21 AM
Eight teams qualify for the finals just like Aussie Rules which isn't too bad. I think it's better than the old structure where only five teams qualified and I find the eight team final series to be more competitve and fair.

Amaruu
June 28th, 2004, 03:51 AM
Yea but it will be a bit silly if say Canberra qualifies in 8th spot with say 10 wins, 12 losses (assuming the NRL is 22 rounds excluding byes). Well you know what I mean, how ever many matches each team plays in the minor round, if a team loses more than it wins, and gets through to 8th spot, it looks stupid.

As the AFL has 16 teams, you have to be at least 50 per cent or better to get 8th spot. The past 3 years, 11 wins from 22 matches plus good percentage (points for and against) has been good enough to get 8th spot. But other years it has been 12 wins. At least thats over 50 per cent or equal. But to get 8th spot and into the finals with a less than 50 per cent win loss record in the NRL really only promotes mediocricy.

But what can you do? Add another team I guess. Make it 16 teams. Bring back the Adelaide Rams.

Mr MacPhisto
June 28th, 2004, 09:17 AM
Amaruu, another way to look at it is you have a top 6, with 4 teams guaranteed to make it and 4 more teams playing off for the last 2 spots.
It adds a couple more games to the playoffs (more spectators) and will look alot better once the NRL gives the Gold Coast it's licence back :)

Amaruu
June 28th, 2004, 09:58 AM
Mr MacPhisto, yea I know the deal with that. I think the NRL uses the 1v8, 2v7, 3v6 4v5 format. The last 2 sides really only make up the numbers under that format. The AFL used that format for about 7 years, but it wasnt very popular.

It goes like this:

The top 2 ranked winners from week 1 automatically go to the semi finals (or preliminary finals).

The bottom ranked two losers from week 1 are eliminated.

This means that if final results go to form, meaning teams 1, 2 , 3 and 4 win, that means 1 and 2 go directly through to the semis to be played in week 3 and teams 7 and 8 are eliminated. It also means teams 3,4,5 and 6 swap over in the second week of the finals. That is, in week 1, where you had 3 v 6 and 4 v 5, the teams swap in week 2, being 3 v 5 and 4 v 6. The matches in week 2 are sudden death.

Confusing? You god damn right it is.

Thus if final results go on form, the 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 matches in week 1 are incosequential. They have no bearing. This was not popoluar with the AFL and so they got rid of that format. These days in the AFL they have the 1v4 2v3 (double chance to the loser) and 5v8 and 6v7 (sudden death for the loser) format.

Anyhow, I wasnt whinging about a top 8 in the NRL, I just thought it was a bit odd as the NRL only has 15 teams.

Mr MacPhisto
June 28th, 2004, 10:26 AM
^What I hate most about it is with the current format if teams 5 and 6 loose and 7 and 8 win, a team that finished 5th is screwed.

The 8 team thing was weirder a few years ago when they only had 14 teams.
I'm guessing it's all to do with the dollar. Better TV ratings, bigger crowds, more advertising revenue etc....

fro
June 28th, 2004, 11:05 AM
Good point Macphisto. That pisses me off when the two bottom teams win and 5 and 6 lose. Anyway, I think it should be a top 6 in the NRL, teams 7 and 8 really don't deserve to be there.

When's the last time a team finishing 7 or 8 won the Premiership?

Amaruu
June 28th, 2004, 04:46 PM
^ Well that was my original point, in a 15 team comp, the 8th ranked team doesnt deserve to be there, especially if they lose more than they win.

I couldn't believe this match. I was watching all the first half and then part of the second half and thought when it was 14-0 to the Dragons: "I'm going to bed, safe in the knowledge that the Dragons will go home with the points in the bag". Then I get up this morning, visit smh.com.au and BIGNO! Roosters, 18-14!!!!!

Disappointing that the dragons couldn't keep that lead, but overall it was a good game with finals like football however both sides had their lapses which cost them dearly with the roosters in the first half and dragons in second half.

My brother who went to the match thinks Adrian Morley should of been sent off over the tackle that put him on report, calling it a professional foul. I agree with the refs call as it only wrapped part of the neck of the player. Morely was warned earlier and he couldn't keep up to it. He was cheezed off when he went over minutes later too.

The Dragons were never mean't to win the game but the final score suggests that they wouldn't go down with a fight.

It's confirmed Townsville will host the Broncos v Cowboys semifinal. The capacity of Dairy Farmers Stadium by the way is down to 25,000 these days I think because extra seating has been added at the expense of the higher density grass areas. People are sleeping at the ticket office tonight to buy tickets tomorrow morning.

Not really, rugby league games usually rate better in Melbourne than AFL games rate in Sydney (particularly the GF) even though Swans games are continually being shown live here. Channel 10 are making a big loss through those games but they will recover these losses through the big amount they'll make showing the final series.

I'm sure when the next tv contract comes up for the NRL, I think in 2007, they will get a much bigger and better deal than what they have at the moment. The last deal was made in the wake of the Super League War where rugby league was on its knees, however now it is riding the wave as the biggest ratings winner for channel 9 and they will pay huge amounts to retain the rights. Channel 7 are also finalising a big bid for the rights, but I doubt they will get them since NEWS LTD owns both the NRL and Channel 9... but its possible.
