Top managers in Kenya have more disposable income than their counterparts in many industrialised countries according to a survey ranking salaries of chief executives in 48 countries worldwide. The World Pay Report by global management consultancy firm Hay Group ranks Kenya 25th according to earnings after tax and cost of living adjustments, which translates into an average disposable income of Sh7 million ($104,176) per annum. This is just one place below the United States and ahead of the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Italy and South Africa. The highest-ranked countries are Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “Senior managers in emerging economies are enjoying far higher levels of salary buying power than their counterparts in advanced economies as the competition for top talent intensifies,” says Rob Templeton, Hay Group business development manager for sub-Saharan Africa. This appears to be true as much for local businesses as for multi-national companies operating in Kenya, which are meeting international standards to attract or retain the best people. The highest salaries are paid to executives in the financial services, construction and manufacturing sectors. Kenya’s economy registered 6.1 per cent growth in 2006, up from 5.7 per cent in 2005, 4.3 per cent in 2004, 2.9 per cent in 2003 and 1.8 per cent in 2002.
