View Full Version : Nigeria| High Speed rail| Transportation
Nixoderm August 27th, 2009, 06:50 AM Ok, so i thought ill just post something i was wondering maybe could happen in Nigeria. HIGH SPEED RAIL! Ok this is my prosal for some lines in Nigeria. Tell me ehat u think. Thanks.

As you can see there are 5 lines. These lines are:
Purple Line: Lagos -> Abuja (via Abeokuta, Ibadan and Oshogbo)
Blue Line: Lagos -> Enugu (via Benin City and Onitsha)
Orange Line: Benin City -> Calabar (via Warri, Port Harcourt and Aba)
Red Line: Kano -> Port Harcourt (via Zaria, Kaduna, Abuja, Enugu, Okigwi, Umuahia and Aba)
Green Line: Abuja -> Maiduguri (via Jos and Bauchi)
Of course, there would also be stopovers in smaller towns and suburbs n the cities they pass through.
I also created a map of the major stations in Lagos it should pass through, again, the can be more stations in lagos to provide fast transport for commuters.

I welcome you to add changes, suggestions, improvements and critiscm.
qymekkam August 28th, 2009, 04:02 AM instead of ending the red line at kano i would end it at katsina
Nixoderm August 28th, 2009, 05:47 AM Because, Katsina is not a major city, maybe a future expansion to Katsina. Even the whole Green line would be a gamble, as i can tell there isn't enough activity in that area to justify such a massive investment.
Eman-07 August 28th, 2009, 11:07 PM The "whole nigeria" railway project is halted right?
Nixoderm August 29th, 2009, 08:09 PM I have no idea, anyone know?
friendsofthecity August 30th, 2009, 03:39 PM if only such idea ever come across their minds.
Carver02 August 31st, 2009, 03:00 AM Nixoderm, your map is just about what I would have planed. Port Harcourt to Kano and Lagos to Maiduguri. The obvious places to start construction here would be Lagos-Abuja and Port Harcourt-Abuja.
But I don't think you would want intercity rail going straight through Lagos Island. The intercity station should be on the mainland and Lagosians can take the Lagos light rail to the intercity station.
if only such idea ever come across their minds.
It has come across their minds. They have received proposals on just this before.
Nixoderm August 31st, 2009, 03:30 AM I put the Lagos intercity should go through Lagos Island, ikoyi, VI, Lekki and that region for several reasons.
1. It provides added High Speed transit for the people of Lagos.
2. That is the most expensive, exclusive and profitable corridor in West Africa maybe even the whole of Africa, It would only make sense to provide them with super fast rail opportunities to other Nigerian cities.
3. That area is to be developed further and lacks arail system, this provides one for the area.
4. If the rail passes through lekki it shortens the distance from Lagos to Benin and therefore makes the system millions cheaper.
Several more that escapes my mind at this point.
Nixoderm July 14th, 2010, 04:54 AM I really want to hear people's more detailed opinions on such a proposal. I want to see alternate plans, interests, cost, infrastructure. I know this is fantasy but I want to hear whether people have better plans or ideas.
GAR3TH July 14th, 2010, 07:37 AM HERE IS A MAP THAT I CREATED. . .HOPE YOU LIKE IT. . .WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

Pink Line (looks red): Port Harcourt -> Yaounde (Via Calabar)
Blue Line: Lagos -> Abuja (via Abeokuta, Ibadan and Oshogbo)
Light Blue Line: Kano -> Niamey (Via Katsina, Sokoto, Dosso)
Yellow Line: Abuja -> bauchi (Via Jos)
Artemis July 14th, 2010, 10:58 AM what about Kano > Maduguri > Djamnea (Niger Republic)?
GAR3TH July 14th, 2010, 11:53 AM I Think You Mean Djamnea, Chad...and thats a good Idea...I'll change the map
GAR3TH July 14th, 2010, 12:14 PM New Line Green Line: Kano -> Djamnea (Via Maduguri)

GAR3TH July 14th, 2010, 12:21 PM New Line Hot Pink Line: Bauchi -> Maduguri (Via Gombe)

Artemis July 14th, 2010, 03:49 PM ^^ Djamnea, Chad of course... :) looks good and would be a practical idea
Nixoderm July 14th, 2010, 03:50 PM I like your map except I don't think the light blue, pink and green lines, would be economically wise at this stage in time. the would not be enough passengers to justify travel from these places. Niger, Chad and Cameroon are way too underdeveloped for an HST line to pass through them and for them to reap good rewards. However, I like the Accra to Enugu line though.

In terms of high speed passenger rail probably only the Lagos-Abuja line (perhaps it could be extended to Kaduna), and maybe a Port-Harcourt-Abuja line could be economical - although even Port Harcourt is questionable.
I think GAR3TH has a good map in terms of conventional rail. Connecting Niamey and N'Djamena would be great, especially after you annex these countries, which should be a long term goal.
friendsofthecity July 16th, 2010, 12:55 AM I think Abuja - Port Harcourt could be as viable as Lagos - Abuja. The Abuja - Port harcourt will be utilized by other cities along that route, thereby could even make it one of the most profitable in actual sense, unlike Abuja - Kaduna which is few kilometres away from each other.

What would be the benefits of annexing Chad or Niger, except for increased land and population?
Carver02 July 16th, 2010, 06:06 AM What would be the benefits of annexing Chad or Niger, except for increased land and population?
The increased land and population create larger markets for Nigeria's companies. Unification would also create new economic and educational opportunities for the people living in Niger and Chad - and this would ultimately benefit Nigerians. Generally, larger size results in more opportunity and more prosperity.
Another reason is that size would help give Nigeria more security by giving Nigeria "strategic depth." Strategic depth is a problem for Pakistan which is why they had an agreement with the Taliban in Afghanistan to allow Pakistani forces to retreat into Afghanistan if they needed to do so.
Tbite July 16th, 2010, 06:19 AM I don't like how in Nixoderm's map, Minna and Ilorin are bypassed.
Especially Ilorin.
