All the masonry of a Hindu Mandir is in itself load bearing, with no reinforcement from ferrous material such as steel, even in the foundations! Thousands of tonnes of fine marble and limestone have been hand-carved by skilled craftsmen. The Mandir is a masterpiece of intricate design and workmanship of ancient Indian arts, traditions and philosophy. The Mandir was constructed in a record 18 months. It is a testimony to the sheer dedication and devotion of over 400 volunteers. Toronto's BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, by the numbers: ˇ 1,800 craftsmen involved at 26 different sites in India ˇ 305 containers shipped with carved stone modules from India to Toronto ˇ 400 volunteers gave more than a million hours of services ˇ 18 months to complete stone work (jig-zaw puzzle) in Canada ˇ 132 archways, ˇ 84 decorative ceilings, 340 pillars ˇ 24,151 handcarved pieces ˇ 5.6 tonnes, heaviest stone vs 50 grams, lightest stone ˇ 10,000 tonnes of Italian marble, Turkish limestone, Indian sandstone and granite ˇ 95,000 cubic feet of stone carved in India and shipped to Toronto ˇ Built to last over 1,000 years. photo's by : Keith Watson aka Keith Watson on flickr.com http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3312/3449303009_10b09dd235_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3447470946_8bcd80ba1a_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3626/3458551871_30b3f90ea5_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3574/3490508701_db08431c37_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3399/3509476733_aa88333142_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3342/3504319582_7115e36a1e_b.jpg Marathaman August 28th, 2009, 09:06 PM ^Thanks Andrew, but this thread is only for temples located within India. Hey, discussion is over man. Pls post pictures! irutavias August 29th, 2009, 06:14 AM Never knew the Birlas built so many temples all over India. I knew they were a religious family, but I was only familiar with the Birla Mandir in Hyderabad. Nice to see their religious philanthropy all over India! Marathaman August 29th, 2009, 06:18 AM Never knew the Birlas built so many temples all over India. I knew they were a religious family, but I was only familiar with the Birla Mandir in Hyderabad. Nice to see their religious philanthropy all over India! They built arguably the first temple in independent India (the Delhi Birla mandir). Its apparently a family tradition. The story is that a priest predicted great success for the family as long as they continued to build temples. They haven't stopped building since then (or stopped being successful) irutavias August 29th, 2009, 06:40 AM Haha good for them. It's nice to see a prominent business family engaging in such work. I'm sure this quality is rare among their peers. Personally, I am a big fan of traditional/indigenous architecture; it's a pitty that more places around the world don't make such efforts to preserve their architectural heritage like this. Mostly poor villagers with school education. These skills are taught in traditional/informal ways or are passed down within families (or castes). I've noticed that the temples generally tend to be left uncoloured. Is there any particular reason for this and is it the norm with Indian temples? Marathaman May 13th, 2010, 07:10 AM ^Depends on the style. Many of the temples shown here are from a particular Gujarati/Rajasthani style that has become popular throughout North and Central India. Temples from the Maratha Confederacy period (17th-18th century) are often coloured/painted, and so are temples of the Madurai Nayak period in Tamil Nadu and other southern states. Infact, a lot of temples today are built from concrete and painted like modern buildings, but those are very ordinary looking structures and don't have much architectural value. There was a considerable gap in continuity during the Islamic period in some parts of the country, so a lot of temples that may have been painted earlier were not maintained/fallen to disrepair and the paint may have washed away. Later when the styles were revived in the modern period, the architects may have assumed that they were always unpainted. So there is a lot of uncertainty and variation through the ages, but as of today, this white marble or sandstone unpainted type of construction is in vogue (except South India and Himalayan region) se12 May 15th, 2010, 03:59 PM u/c in Talegaon, Maharashtra http://picasaweb.google.com/ranjeetrawal/VisitToTalegaonJainTempleWithKantiLataManipalKumarDrNPVinita# http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2913/india035.jpg http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/2173/india20039.jpg http://img576.imageshack.us/img576/2640/india20032.jpg http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2507/india20033.jpg http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9068/india20044.jpg I like it. :) Joneswilliamsc May 18th, 2010, 06:36 AM Hey many of them I have seen it. Proud2BVietnamese October 2nd, 2010, 06:37 AM India continues to set a precedent the world over of what architecture should be. To be honest, I think Indian architecture to be overly done. Simplicity and elegance is what it lacks. Marathaman October 2nd, 2010, 10:08 AM Aren't Indians bored of building temples in the same architecture for thousand years now? Actually this is an ancient style which has been revived and become popular in the last decade. You'll find very few surviving old temples in this style of architecture. Great job Marathaman. Have you posted a pictures of new Jain temple in Shapur (near Thane). I visited that temple 3 years ago while coming back from Shridi to Mumbai. Main temple was already done but some smaller ones around them were still u/c. I am sure by now they are all finished. These temples (main one and some smaller ones) are build in very vast area. The landscaping is beautiful. Will appreciate if you can post some pictures here. Thanks MM.
