TheRedofBahrain August 31st, 2009, 10:11 PM I heard Gulf Air was supposed to give an important press conference today or yesterday, but I havent heard anything so far...
Halawala September 1st, 2009, 08:02 PM Gulf Air Lands in Baghdad
Gulf Air started its Bahrain-Baghdad route today with leading businessmen and VIPS including GF CEO, and Bahraini ambassador to Iraq. There will an arrival ceremony.
Wondering what were the flight loads, as Gulf Air is the only major carrier in the Arabian Gulf countries to fly to Baghdad.
Gulf Air has officially revealed in the GDS systems that it will be launching new 5 weekly nonstop flights to BGW-Baghdad International Airport from its BAH hub effective Sept 1st 2009.
All flights will be flown using an A 320 and the timings are as follows:
GF 201 DEP BAH 0945 ARR BGW 1130
GF 200 DEP BGW 1245 ARR BAH 1425
Flights will be operated on TUE THU FRI SAT SUN only.
Good connections are available to LON especially in both directions as well to FRA and CDG on certain days of the week.
banuthev September 2nd, 2009, 03:21 PM Gulf Air puts A340 fleet on the market (http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2009/09/01/331725/gulf-air-puts-a340-fleet-on-the-market.html)
Gulf Air is seeking takers for its Airbus A340s as its newly appointed chief executive begins a "comprehensive review" of the loss-making Bahraini flag carrier.
Aircraft trading and placement company Avinco has been handed a remarketing mandate for the five A340-300s that Gulf Air owns. The airline also has a further four A340-300s on lease.
The five aircraft - which according to Flightglobal's ACAS database are 13-15 years old - are being put up for sale or lease, says Avinco chief Francois Gautier.
The move marks the first major fleet decision since the airline came under new management - former Royal Jordanian head Samer Majali replaced Bjorn Naf as chief executive in August.
Majali says that "Gulf Air is not sustainable and is losing public money", but he warns that it must become less reliant on subsidies from the kingdom. Majali has told employees he will undertake a "comprehensive review" of the airline's strategy - something which, he says, has not been implemented since Gulf Air became the Bahraini flag-carrier.
Oman became the last of its local Gulf shareholders to pull out in 2007, following Abu Dhabi and Qatar's withdrawals, leaving Bahrain as the sole investor.
"We do not yet know what size or shape Gulf Air will take following this review," says Majali. "However, as a result it may be necessary for us to look at our fleet orders and adjust them accordingly to the airline's newly defined requirements."
Gulf Air has 20 Airbus A330s and 24 Boeing 787s on order, as well as a batch of A320s. In April the airline said it would introduce 10 new A320s during the coming year.
"We are keeping an open mind and will look at all potential avenues to achieve a sustainable business," Majali says. "This may include developing existing or building new alliance or strategic partnerships with other airlines."
Gulf Air has long intended to phase out its A340s, originally in favour of leasing Boeing 777-300ERs from Jet Airways. But the carrier, having flown the 777s for a few months, opted not to take the aircraft for the long-term dry-lease it had been considering.

banuthev September 2nd, 2009, 03:24 PM Anyone know when Bahrainair is commencing flights to Colombo?
B-Patriot November 21st, 2009, 02:11 PM More choice when flying to Dubai... =)
Flydubai, Dubai’s first low-cost airline, will launch two daily flights to Bahrain, its second GCC destination, starting from December 13.
Bahrain is one of the Gulf’s most established business and commercial centres and in 2008 it was named the world’s fastest growing financial centre by the City of London’s Global Financial Centres Index.
A gateway for the eastern region of Saudi Arabia with its highly important oil and gas industry, Bahrain is the the low-cost carrier's tenth route.
The Bahrain service will target the peak morning and evening periods of travel and provide an alternative on an already busy route. The one way flight tickets have been priced at Dh250 ($68) onwards, said a top airline official on Wednesday at the Dubai Airshow.
The flydubai’s daily flights to Bahrain (FZ015 and FZ021) will leave Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 at 07.15am and 08.05pm, arriving in Bahrain at 07.30am and 08.20pm (local time) respectively.
The return flights FZ016 and FZ022 leave Bahrain at 08.15am and 09.05pm arriving in Dubai at 10.25am and 11.15pm local time respectively.
Flydubai landed on global stage exactly six months ago when the airline’s first Boeing 737-800 was unveiled at the Dubai Airport Expo’s Royal Pavilion. The same venue was chosen for today’s announcement, which took place on fourth day of the Dubai Airshow.
Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, said: 'Announcing Bahrain as our tenth route at the Dubai Airshow is a nice way to round off a successful six months since the unveiling of the first flydubai aircraft.'
'On May 18, when I was watching the crowd catch their first glimpse of a flydubai aircraft, I would not have predicted that six months on we would have achieved so much,' said a beaming Al Ghaith.
'In that time we’ve launched 10 routes, begun operations to eight cities, taken delivery of five aircraft, opened a new flydubai HQ and carried thousands of passengers. In short we have become one of the fastest growing start-up airlines in the world,' he observed.
'It has not been without a few hitches along the way, but this has been a very exciting and relatively smooth journey,' Al Ghaith remarked.
'We still have a long way to go, but we have built a good foundation and I believe we are well placed to handle the challenges that we, as any business, will have to face. I look forward to seeing where our journey will take us in the next six months,' he added.
All flydubai prices include all taxes and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10kg. Flights are available for purchase from the website (flydubai.com), call centre (04 301 0800) and travel agents.-TradeArabia News Service
B-Patriot November 21st, 2009, 02:13 PM So now we have Bahrain Air, Gulf Air, Emirates (but they're usually expensive), and FlyDubai... =)
And Air Arabia perhaps, thats sort of an option...
I'd love to see more options when flying to Beirut.. But i doubt MEA will be flying to Bahrain anytime soon... FlyDubai will add a good option to beirut, albeit, an indirect flight!
B-Patriot February 9th, 2010, 08:18 AM I dont understand why its soo difficult to turn around this company.. Its a company at the end of the day, like any other (although more strategically crucial than most i suppose).. Is there just too much corrurtion that is impossible to root out or something..!?
I'm getting sick and tired of Gulf Air.. I used to be hopeful.. And think 'No, give them a chance, they're trying hard'.. But i'm not soo apologetic anymore..
LIFELINE VOW FOR GULF AIR
MANAMA: Gulf Air is to get a fresh lease of life to ensure its continuity.
"Being the national carrier, it will always get absolute state support," His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander, pledged yesterday.
They described the need to ensure Gulf Air continues as a top priority.
"Backing the national carrier is a duty and protecting employees' rights is essential," the two leaders said.
They vowed to salvage the national carrier as they met yesterday to discuss the current plight of Gulf Air.
"Restructuring the company to ensure its continuity and overcome its difficulties is a national necessity", they said.
They stressed the need to back Gulf Air, citing its strategic importance as a key pillar of the national economy and its status as an iconic aviation symbol in the region.
The need to mobilise all official efforts to restructure the airline was highlighted. "Logic and long-standing history covering five decades plead in favour of backing Gulf Air and make such a support a compelling necessity", they said.
They described it as an outstanding symbol for civil aviation in Bahrain and the Gulf and a trademark for promoting the kingdom abroad.
The Premier and the Crown Prince discussed proposals tabled by the Economic Development Board to restructure the company.
The Premier vowed that the government would never let Gulf Air down and would lead it on the path to success.
B-Patriot February 21st, 2010, 03:57 PM Gulf Air to combine first and business classes!
Bahrain's national carrier Gulf Air will combine its first class and business class, starting on March 1, its chief executive said on Sunday, as the loss-making airline looks to reduce costs.
'We decided to move to one super business class offering by combining the two cabins without changing the seating,' Sameer Majali told Reuters over the phone.
Majali said one reason for the change was that a large amount of Gulf Air's traffic consisted of passengers transiting through Bahrain and it would be easier to cater to them with just one premium offer.
'A similar product across our airplanes will make things easier for us', he said. The carrier has been reducing costs by closing unprofitable routes and has said it planned to cut job positions through natural attrition.
The global slump in air travel demand has in particular hit airlines' premium offers, with many corporates shifting their bookings to cheaper classes to save costs.
Australia's Qantas said last week it would reduce its first class seats on some routes flown by its Airbus A380 aircraft fleet. Gulf Air plans to shift its order book from wide-body to narrow body planes and regional jets as it changes its route network to focus on regional traffic.
Gulf Air was established as a regional airline but has struggled to find its niche. Previous shareholders Oman, Abu Dhabi and Qatar gave up their stakes, after which ownership of the carrier was transferred to Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat in 2007.
Mumtalakat said earlier this month it would transfer ownership of the carrier to the Bahraini government.-Reuters
B-Patriot February 21st, 2010, 03:58 PM Sounds strange.. I think Gulf Air is officially turning into a low cost airline!
I think the same happened with Aer Lingus in Ireland.. Maybe that's what it'll take to finally get Gulf Air to be profitable..
Kuwaiti February 22nd, 2010, 10:51 PM Gulf Air lost their credibility and their only hope for survival is to give away all these luxuries it once offered to passengers. Just turn it into a low-cost carrier, in my opinion.
B-Patriot February 22nd, 2010, 11:51 PM Well.. they're sorta on that track.. But i don't think they want to become a totally/typical low-cost.. But yeah, they need some extreme restructuring..
Kuwaiti February 23rd, 2010, 12:07 PM Of course they dont want to be. Its not good for their name. But really its no surprise whats happening to Gulf Air. Theyre not backed by a rich govt like Dubai or Qatar. Gulf Air are acting the same way most airliners around the world today. I just hope they maintain their aircrafts better. The seats are broken, lights dont work, the plane vibrates for 20 seconds after takeoff. Not the same carrier it once was...
Adel February 23rd, 2010, 12:36 PM Dubai is not rich, it's drowning in debt. Bahrain could have gone the same route if it wanted.

And i don't think the planes are THAT bad... LoL, 7aram 3aleik..!! Although they're not exactly good, thats for sure..
There are huge plane orders to renew the fleet.. I think this yr or the next they should get their first planes delivered..
But its a bit confusing and messed up.. I'm not too happy/assured still.. Cuz they've ordered both Airbuses and Boeings i believe... And Now Majali is saying he wants only narrow-bodied aircrafts.. And i don't think thats what they necessarily ordered..
God knows.. lol.. But they definately do plan to renew and refurbish their fleet one way or another..
And i personally wouldn't be surprised if Majali changed Gulf Air's Livery soon, although i do like the current one..

No that's Dubai World:bash:
In a few years Dubai will be back on its feet proving all of its bashers wrong.:mad2:
B-Patriot February 23rd, 2010, 01:27 PM Its the Dubai Government too.. LoL.. The Public debt is estimated at around 100% of GDP i think, if not more...
Countries are recommended to limit public debt to 65% or so... not 100 or 120%..
But they're managing their debt so far, thanx to big daddy abu dhabi...
No disrespect meant towards dubai, i admire what they've done and continue to do.. But lets get real and face facts :)

B-Patriot March 1st, 2010, 12:03 AM MP warns of 'mass resignations'
MANAMA: Bahrain's national carrier Gulf Air faces mass resignations by its pilots.
"There are 20 resignations submitted by pilots to the company to date," MP Shaikh Abdulhalim Murad claimed.
He said a rival airline company was benefiting from Gulf Air's woes and had interviewed its 46 pilots, describing the potential haemorrhage as a "real boon".
Shaikh Murad, who is also Gulf Air probe committee chairman, described the alleged mass resignations as tantamount to a "big crime". He also deplored what he called a "brain drain" which is bleeding the national carrier.
"Gulf Air is losing its best national competencies while corrupt gangs continue to thrive on public money," he said.
He also criticised "contradictory statements" issued by the government, the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Mumtalakat.
"Mumtalakat chief executive said Gulf Air would be transferred to the government before announcing that it would remain under the company's authority," he said.
He also cited the EDB chief executive's statement announcing the privatisation of the national carrier within a year although such plans were previously denied.
He blamed what he called a "mess" on "random policies and hasty decision-making". He also criticised the government for failing to co-operate with the probe committee.
"Sixty questions addressed to Finance Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa remain unanswered to date," he said.
Shaikh Murad accused the government of "procrastinating to gain more time", with two months left in the fourth legislative session.
He also accused Gulf Air officials of sowing fear among employees, speaking of the need for 1,500 lay-offs, the majority of whom are Bahrainis.

B-Patriot March 9th, 2010, 12:52 PM إحلال الطائرات الجديدة لطيران الخليج مستمر في 2010
http://blog.seattlepi.com/aerospace/library/1_E170_Gulf_Air_ALTA.jpg

B-Patriot June 11th, 2010, 11:16 AM Bahrain Air plans revamp
MANAMA: Bahrain Air announced that it was no longer a low cost carrier (LCC) and was in the process of positioning itself as a 'value for money' airline. It said that its costs would be marginally more than what it offered earlier, with more services and facilities on offer.
"We have had a close look at the LCC model and found we do not fit into that bracket in this part of the world," newly appointed Bahrain Air commercial operations director Richard Nuttall told the GDN.
"As part of the new look, we have started offering all facilities being offered in any other regular airline but at a significantly less cost.
"On the other hand, our costs will now be marginally more than what we offered earlier but in some cases, these would be the same as before." Mr Nuttall, who joined the airline in April, said free food on board, the same baggage allowance as regular airlines and free access to premium lounges for premium passengers have all been introduced.
"In the future, we plan a loyalty programme, frequent flyer points as well as code shares and alliances with other airlines the world over," he said.
Mr Nuttall the LCC model was simply not working in the GCC region.
"We need to have a number of factors in place to make a LCC model work," he said.
"These include web-based bookings, point-to-point operations and flying to secondary airports."
Mr Nuttall said most of this was not happening in the region.
"We had to, therefore, reposition ourselves," he said.
"The process is now already on and we hope to consolidate as we move along."
Mr Nuttal said with the LCC model, the airline was unable to get the savings it wanted.
"With the new model, we hope to do well," he said.
The airline now offers 120 economy and 12 premium seats on an Airbus A319 as well as 150 economy and 12 premium seats on an Airbus A320, said Mr Nuttal.
"We are also looking to expand our network in the near future and are thinking of more destinations in India," he said.
"These include destinations in north and south India."
Bahrain Air now flies to 20 destinations, with the 21st to Amman resuming next month.
B-Patriot June 11th, 2010, 11:20 AM I don't know how i feel about this in relation to myself..I like their current prices for the most part, hehe.. Some of their prices, like to Beirut, are too expensive actually..
However, i think its probably a good idea for them.. Too many low costs in the region.. Air Arabia is very much established with 2 secndary hubs soo far.. Also, Gulf Air has eliminated first class, and is resembling a Low Cost airline in some aspects.. So now the models and quality will converge between Gulf and Bahrain Air.. Hopefully this will put pressure on the prices, seeing as they fly to a lot of the same routes!
What do u guys think..?
hakz2007 September 25th, 2010, 10:31 AM GULF AIR BEGINS SERVICES TO ADEN
MANAMA, Sept. 25 (NNN-Saba):Gulf Air, the national carrier of Bahrain, has launched flights to Aden, making the airline the first carrier in the region to commence service to the commercial capital of Yemen.
"Bahrain’s links with Yemen have been historical as both were prominent seafaring countries for decades," said Maher Al Musallam, Gulf Air deputy chief executive officer.
"Gulf Air has been linking Yemen for nearly 35 years since we started our services to the capital Sana’a in 1976. This has been further strengthened today as we add Aden to our growing network of destinations."
"We strongly believe there is a huge commercial and tourism potential in Aden; with the presence of the largest port in the country, just four nautical miles from the second largest shipping corridor in the world, a free trade zone, a transshipment point, a modern port, and a renovated airport. Aden is well positioned to grow as a hub of manufacturing, real estate/land development, transshipment and tourism," he added.
"In addition, the historic Hadramout’s cultural heritage, Socotra island’s unique bio-diversity and the beautiful seafront city Mukalla situated in between, Yemen’s tourism is bound to grow as another important economic growth sector of the country," Al Musallam continued.
"I am proud of the fact that Gulf Air has established a leadership position as the first Gulf carrier to connect Aden to the region as currently no other Gulf carriers are serving this city."
"Gulf Air’s new strategy is to identify and connect under-served and niche markets that present business potential to grow and, create potentially high yield city-pairs by providing direct service to Bahrain and beyond. The launching of our services to 11 new destinations in the past 14 months is a clear demonstration of this strategy," he added.
"Our aim is to serve every regional capital with at least a double-daily service and to generate a new market of travellers, who wish to conduct their business in the region and return home the same day."
Gulf Air will operate four weekly flights from Bahrain to Aden via Sana’a.
Gulf Air was founded in 1950. The airline's current network stretches from Europe to Asia, connecting 43 cities in 28 countries, with a fleet of 36 aircrafts. http://namnewsnetwork.org/v2/read.php?id=134352

Gulf Air Adds More Flights to Milan
Airline to operate six weekly flights from 1 July with 117% increased capacity
Manama, Bahrain 14 April 2011: Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which started services between Bahrain and Milan last month, has increased its frequency to the fashion and business capital of Italy from four to six flights per week with a 117% increase in total seat capacity.
From 1 July, Gulf Air will operate six days a week in two different schedules giving customers convenient options to choose from when they want to travel to and from Milan. On Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays the flight will depart Bahrain to reach Milan early mornings while on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays the flight will depart Bahrain late mornings to reach Milan by afternoon.
Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Majali said, “We are pleased to increase our frequency to and from Milan and add more capacity. The new route, which we launched just last month, has already become popular and we are encouraged by the bookings and high level of enquiries from potential travellers. Come summer, the demand will be even higher and therefore we have decided to upgrade the route with a new Airbus A320 aircraft, which can take more people and cargo.”
“In addition, the split schedule gives flexible options for our customers to choose their arrival and departures according to their business and leisure needs. Last but not the least, the split schedule also offers more onward connectivity options for those travelling beyond Bahrain.”
“As the only carrier operating the largest network in the Middle East with over 1000 flights per week, we present an unique advantage for our European customers to reach the vast Middle East and North Africa markets with our seamless connection via Bahrain,” concluded Mr. Majali.
From 1 July, Gulf Air will be operating an Airbus A320 with 16 seats in Falcon Gold class and 120 in Economy class with the cargo capacity to carry four tons of freight.
The new schedule is as follows:
GF 0021 Mon, Thurs, Sun Bahrain 0215 - Milan 0735
