LRT in Manila are great.:)
wino October 16th, 2009, 12:09 AM ^^ yea, it's really helping somehow to lessen the Traffic nightmare in Metro Manila.. (i guess)
but during rush hours.. i would never dream to ride it.. very very long line (millions ride on it daily) jam packed and uncomfortable :D
but during other hours, it is a fast comfy ride, and it's not too expensive. Specially convenient when shopping. :D

Almost same thing happen to KL during peak hour.... I think it happen to Bangkok and Singapore also...
RonnieR October 16th, 2009, 05:02 AM ^^ yes, during rush hour, wow, it's really packed. They have separate coaches for men and women but I've seen some women inside the men's coaches hehehe.

wino October 16th, 2009, 05:26 AM ^^ i remember when i was working back in Cubao and then Makati Metro Manila.. it was really horrible to go with the mob..
usually i'd rather wait a few hours to go home.. stroll the mall, buy some snacks.. till the mob of people has lessened.
but still, i'd rather take it than the bus. it has a lot of advantages compared to buses.

Most metros are packed during rush hours even in HK.
But with Manila's situation especially the MRT, it would less packed and efficient if a full metro system was planned instead of light rail. A light rail system planned in a major thoroughfare doesn't do justice.
Plus Queueing. There are only a few manned ticket booths and people have to wait for around 30 mins or more. It would take much less if MRT had these
http://www.johnnyjet.com/image/PicForNewsletterHongKongMay2008280.JPG
As with the LRT-2. It is well planned. It uses several ticket machines though you can buy your ticket at the counter as well.
Sky Harbor October 16th, 2009, 06:42 AM ^^ The MRT has TVMs, but not all stations have them, and if they do, they're not a lot. Sometimes, the machines are even out of order. :ohno:

It's good that there are now other forms to to pay the fare - the RCBC smart card. If I ride the MRT, I use a different card (reload) that I bought with a chocolate brand name on it - as a sponsor.
I'm wondering what would happen next year when the LRT North extension (loop section) is finished - surely it would increase the traffic of Blue line, which is currently the most congested line.

still, in a way, it's not that bad really. at least that's a few hours saved from being stuck in traffic. That's why people really don't mind it that much.

chengo November 10th, 2009, 09:22 PM Thailand Plans THB1.47 Trillion Project To Improve Rail Service
BANGKOK -(Dow Jones)- Thailand's Transport Ministry will propose to economic ministers at a meeting Wednesday a plan involving investment worth THB1.47 trillion ($44.14 billion) to upgrade the railway system and services to meet international standards.
1.Under the first stage of the development plan for the State Railway of Thailand, the SRT will spend THB46 billion between 2010-2014 to replace old train engine cars, improve railway and signaling systems nationwide, Transport Minister Sophon Zaram told reporters Tuesday.
2.Upon completion of the initial stage, the SRT will invest THB392 billion to expand network coverage by 2,651 kilometers and at the same time spend THB323 billion to develop dual-track lines nationwide
3.In the final phase, the government plans to allow the private sector to invest around THB708 billion on high-speed trains nationwide.
The SRT will also seek to restructure its organization and management structures to improve efficiency, said Sophon.

RonnieR December 2nd, 2009, 10:12 AM Updated Map of Metro Manila's MRT/LRT
Oh hi Sky Harbor. I got confused, thinking the MRT-7 is the Red Line. Anyway...
Here's a map I made tonight. This is intended for Wikipedia, but I want to know if there are any mistakes or comments or whatever before I upload it:
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/9336/srts.png
It's the 3 LRT/MRT lines, including the LRT-1 extension. The MRT-7 and LRT-6 can be added in the future once they start to take shape.
wino December 2nd, 2009, 03:23 PM ^^ did you include the ongoing construction on the extension to Bulacan Province?? i heard it's already ongoing.. then next year they'll start the extension to southern Manila..
I wish they will also have a concrete time line for the extension in Cavite province.
yawa_posoy_kaayo December 2nd, 2009, 04:01 PM Manila's mass transit looks crap and old-fashioned, just my opinion but I think everybody agrees with it. Please post more from Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore's mass transit, they look superb and modern.

RonnieR December 3rd, 2009, 12:55 AM ^^ did you include the ongoing construction on the extension to Bulacan Province?? i heard it's already ongoing.. then next year they'll start the extension to southern Manila..
I wish they will also have a concrete time line for the extension in Cavite province.
MRT 7 (23 km) will start its construction next year and so with LRT 6 South Extension.
The LRT 6 South Extension is a priority project as this is funded by the government while MRT 7 is privately funded with government guarantee. They will also extend the MRT 2 all the way to Antipolo. :)

Big-ticket projects lined up for 2010

THE GOVERNMENT WILL PUSH big-ticket infrastructure projects in 2010 following this year’s first wave of fast-moving, labor-intensive projects in line with efforts to stimulate economic growth, an official of the National Economic and Development Authority said.
Dennis Arroyo, director of Neda’s national planning and policy staff, said in an interview that the shift to large projects had in fact started with the ongoing construction of the link between the Light Rail Transit Line 1 that ends in Monumento in Caloocan City with the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 that ends at the corner of North Ave. and Edsa in Quezon City.
Arroyo said there was also the extension of the Skyway elevated toll road all the way to Alabang in Muntinlupa City.
“Big projects in the pipeline for next year include the extension of the LRT line to southern Metro Manila, the construction of LRT lines going to Rizal (MRT 2) and Bulacan (MRT 7), and the C6 circumferential road,” he said.
“These projects will serve not much to create jobs but to improve our national competitiveness,” Arroyo added.
Last week, Neda Acting Director General Augusto B. Santos said the government should continue upgrading the country’s competitiveness—such as through lower electricity cost—even as efforts under the Economic Resiliency Plan runs its course in the remainder of the year.

Manila-X December 3rd, 2009, 03:18 AM I just hope the MRT-7 will follow MRT-2's system and make it heavy rail instead of light rail.
The MRT-2 is still my favourite of all ASEAN trains. It has this cultural element to it especially in the design.
I just hope other lines in MM have this design like this.

Not really. The BTS is more a medium capacity system while the MRT-3 is light rail. Plus the BTS uses full metro while the MRT uses trams.

BKK's metro system is not that big. Metrowise, there are only 3 lines which is composed of 2 BTS and one MRT. There you have the new Airport Link and some old commuter/suburban rail lines. The rest are composed of public buses and ferries.
The city still has a long way to go. Singapore still has the largest metro network in ASEAN.

Sino-Thai wins second Purple Line contract
The Nation Published on January 21, 2010
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority yesterday awarded the second civil-works contract, worth Bt13.1 billion, to Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, for construction of the Purple Line mass-transit project.
The Purple Line has been divided into four contracts. Last August, the MRTA awarded the first one, worth Bt14.292 billion, to CKTC, a joint venture between CH Karnchang and Tokyu Construction.
After a signing ceremony yesterday, MRTA chairman Suphoth Sublom said the state agency expected to award the third contract, worth Bt5.025 billion, to PAR, a JV consisting of Ascon Construction, Power Line and Ruam Nakhon Construction, this month.
The fourth contract, worth Bt4 billion, has yet to be put up for bidding and involves installation of the rail system.
Sino-Thai won the bidding for the second contract last June after first quoting Bt15.32 billion, then lowering the figure to Bt13.1 billion after negotiations with the MRTA. The contract covers eight stations, starting at the Rama III Bridge and ending at Klong Bang Pai in Thon Buri district, and the structure spanning the Chao Phya River.
President Vallop Rungkijvorasathien said his company was confident it could finish construction within the required 1,350 days.
Suphoth added that six companies had bought bidding documents for the Blue Line's Bang Sue-Tha Phra and Hua Lamphong-Bang Khae sections.
The Bt52.46-billion project has been divided into five contracts.
The six companies are Unique Engineering and Construction, which bought documents for four of the contracts; Obayashi, only the third contract; Ch Karnchang, all five contracts; Nawarat Pattanakarn, all five contracts; Italian-Thai Development, all five contracts; and Sino-Thai, all five contracts.

sutee January 23rd, 2010, 04:47 PM SRT awards rail contract
Bangkokpost 30/09/2008
The SRT board also yesterday approved the selection of the Unique-Chun Wo joint venture as the contractor for the civil engineering of its 15km Red Line railway's from Bang Sue to Taling Chan.
Although the joint venture, which comprises SET-listed Unique Engineering and Construction Plc and Hong Kong's Chun Wo Construction & Engineering Co, was the only qualified contender, the SRT selected it because it would otherwise have to raise the median price by two billion baht in a fresh bidding contest, Mr Yuthana said. He expects the contract to be signed next month.
Earlier, a construction operator which was disqualified from bidding filed a petition with the SRT opposing the committee's selection of the Unique-Chun Wo joint venture since there was only a single bidder for the project.
In the meantime, the SRT board delayed consideration on the demand from Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) for the SRT to clear encroachments from the construction sites eyed for the Red Line's 26km section from Bang Sue to Rangsit before the construction commences.
Mr Yuthana said he would ask the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning and the Finance Ministry if the lending condition was acceptable.
The Japanese bank had never before raised such a condition, he added.

SRT signs contract to construct Red Line
Bangkokpost 15/12/2008
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has signed a contract for the construction of its Red Line route with a Thai-Hong Kong joint venture.
SRT governor Yutthana Thapcharoen said the 8.7-billion-baht contract was signed with the Uniq-Chunwo joint venture on Friday for the construction of the 15-kilometre Red Line from Bang Sue to Taling Chan.
Construction will start next year. The joint venture is made up of Uniq Engineering and Construction Plc and Hong Kong's Chunwo Construction & Engineering Co.
The SRT also signed a contract on Friday with Central Pattana Plc (CPN) to renew the lease for the agency's 47.22-rai plot at the intersection of Phahon Yothin and Vibhavadi Rangsit roads. The SRT will receive a total of 21.2 billion baht over the 20-year lease period from Central Group.
Meanwhile, applications for candidates to run in the election for governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will be accepted from today.
Soithip Traisut, the director-general of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning and the chairperson of the selection committee, said the panel has finished setting the qualifications for the MRTA governor's position and will accept applications from today.
The position is open following the resignation of Prapat Chongsanguan, who quit his post to run in the election for Bangkok governor in October. However, he finished a distant second behind Apirak Kosayodhin, who resigned only weeks after securing his second term to fight corruption charges.

Yes but Tokyo's rapid transit system is a combination of underground and elevated lines. Same with New York where rapid transit lines run above ground especially in the outer boroughs say Brooklyn or The Bronx. But its still called subway.
As for HK's rapid transit, The MTR operates the city's underground rapid transit system. Other than that, the company also operates The Airport Express line, Tung Chung line which connects the Tung Chung New Town with the city centre and the Disneyland Resort Line.
The KCR on the other hand operated surface/surburban rapid transit to the new towns of The New Territories and a light rail line connect the New Towns of Tuen Mun and Yuen Long. The company has then been taken over by The MTR.

100% correct. MRT-4's future is still uncertain though. Even it's envisioned path is loosely placed.
Just a recap:
LRT-1: Baclaran-Monumento...North Ave, QC - running
L/MRT-2: Recto-Santolan...Masinag, Antipolo - running
MRT-3: North Ave-Taft Ave, Pasay - running
MRT-4: ???
MRT-5: Northrail-Metro Manila (segment). - plan
LRT-6: Baclaran/Redemptorist-Niog, Cavite - approved
MRT-7: North Ave-Araneta, Bulacan - approved
MRT-8: Recto to Angono, Rizal - plan
MRT-9: Old Bilibid-Sandigan Bayan, QC - plan
-I hope MRT-4 is the underground metro manila loop or simply traverse C-5

JICA is also conducting feasibility study for phase III from Balaraja, Tangerang (Banten Province) to Cikarang, Bekasi (West Java) as West-East JMRT line...

RonnieR February 12th, 2010, 06:36 AM Based on the plan: YES. Based on reality: still need to wait for realization
In Jakarta MRT (JMRT) thread, actually JICA has already finished the feasibility study of JMRT Phase II (from Dukuh Atas to Stasiun Kota, as extension of phase I Lebak Bulus to Dukuh Atas).
JICA is also conducting feasibility study for phase III from Balaraja, Tangerang (Banten Province) to Cikarang, Bekasi (West Java) as West-East JMRT line...
But, let's just wait when that project will come to real
Oh I see...this could be the reason the Jakarta MRT thread is not that active. They should start the PHase 1 since the construction can last for 4 years, right? With this, the expected opening of PHase 1 in 2015 is achievable.
I love the Bangkok airport link.

We have now 52.8 kms of LRT/MRT plus 36 kms. of commuter rails. I hope the next President will continue to pour more investments in railways and BRT in Metro Manila.
and we now have a video of that...

Seamless rail travel in Metro now possible
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today led a ground-breaking commuter train ride along the 39-kilometer MRT-LRT loop project to introduce the riding public to interconnected travel around Metro Manila.
After leading the commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the February 1986 People Power Revolution at EDSA, the President rode the elevated rail from the Santolan Station of the Metro Rail transit to the Trinoma station and then followed the new route to Monumento. The P6.3 billion Trinoma-Monumento line which is now nearing completion, closes the rail loop around Metro Manila.
From Monumento, the President continued the ride to Pasay City using the LRT 1 line and back to Santolan aboard the MRT.
The President said the loop project fulfills one part of her 10-point agenda called the BEAT THE ODDS which she said will be her legacy of accomplishments to the Filipino people.
Citing the significance of the MRT-LRT interconnecton, the President said the project “binds the metropolis as never before so people can travel faster, cheaper and safer in any part of the metropolis to another.”
“This is the fastest, cheapest and safest mode of transportation for the ordinary Filipino,” she said. “This is katas ng VAT(value added tax).”
Aboard the train coach LRTA general manager Mel Robles briefed the Presidential party, which included Vice President Noli de Castro, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, and Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza, on the loop project.
Mendoza said the “the loop project” will be opened to the commuting public on March 15 and by June, a single ticket for the MRT and LRT will be introduced.
The whole loop is 39 kilometers long with 112 trains and 148 coaches.
The project involved the construction of a 5.71- kilometer elevated line seamlessly from Monumento Station of Line 1 to North Avenue Station of Line 3.
The scope of work included civil and architectural works—construction of a viaduct and three new stations—Balintawak, Roosevelt and the central station.
The Balintawak station will provide modal interchange for bus and jeepney services entering Metro Manila from the north via the North Luzon Expressway.
The project also involved the construction of a P777-million Grand Central Terminal, which will connect the existing MRT Line 3 to future lines such as MRT 7.
LRT Line 1 currently runs from Baclaran in Pasay City to Monumento in Caloocan City. Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 runs from the intersection of Edsa and Taft Avenue in Pasay City up to the North Avenue in Quezon City.
Upon completion, the loop is expected to serve about 1.3 million passengers daily compared to 400,000 before the Arroyo administration embarked on the project.

2011 the comuter train east line improvement track are speed up with new train and double track
so by 2014 there will be the large amount of people moving out from the city to the suburb area.so the traffic jam that you see in bangkok now are like manila and jakarta

i will update photo of construction soon
i am not just saying or showing about this but now bangkok traffic are not good and nothing can change except mass transit . so untill it finish in 2014,now there will be no improvement
how about manila, kuala lumper, jakarta , ho chi minh city and other
how many station you have now ?
how many staion and line you will have in near future? (i want the one with under constuction, not proposed or plan because i dont trust the process , all the time can change and delay)

San Miguel mulls bullet train project
By Mary Ann LL. Reyes (The Philippine Star) Updated March 26, 2010 12:00 AM
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=561232&publicationSubCategoryId=66
MANILA, Philippines - San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has set its sights on what could probably be its most ambitious and expensive project to date as it spearheads the Philippines’ bid to become the first country in Southeast Asia to build and operate a bullet train.
SMC president and CEO Ramon Ang told The STAR that they have commissioned a group that includes international companies with experience in bullet trains to study the possibility of building a bullet train railway that will run from the north to the south end of Luzon.
As planned, the bullet train railway will run the Laoag-Manila-Bicol route. As for the right-of-way acquisitions, Ang said this will be up to the government.
He revealed that they hope to submit their unsolicited proposal to government by the end of the year.
SMC’s top executive expressed optimism about the possibilities that this venture will present to the country’s tourism industry. “We want to help tourism. If nobody dared, we will,” he said in an interview. A high-speed train service is also expected to help boost not only tourism but also the economy in general.
Travel from Manila to Laoag takes around 12 hours by land. The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has a train service that runs the Manila-Bicol route – the Bicol Express which carries as much as 20,000 passengers daily – although it has not been operational for three years due to heavy damage wrought by typhoons. There are plans to resume operations before President Arroyo’s term ends.
Both the Manila to Laoag and Manila to Bicol lines are also currently accessible by air and there are public buses that ply the two routes.
Running speeds of as fast as 300 kilometers per hour, a bullet train can cut travel time to the far ends of Luzon from Manila significantly. Fares are also expected to be cheaper than plane fares but higher than bus fares.
With SMC’s plan, the Philippines will be pitted against Vietnam in the bid to build Southeast Asia’s first bullet train.
The Vietnam project is estimated to cost $56 million and may choose either the group of Sumitomo Corp. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, or Itochu Corp. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, all Japanese companies, for the project. The two groups currently run lines in Japan similar to what would be built in Vietnam.
Vietnam is said to be favoring Japanese technology for the 1,555-kilometer Hanoi-to-Ho Chi Minh City line as Vietnam “is geographically similar to Japan with not enough land and too many people, and a long coastal line,” Nguyen Huu Bang, chair and CEO of Vietnam Railways Corp., was quoted as saying.
The Nomura Research Institute has helped with initial studies for the project, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will fund a feasibility study that will start in June, Vietnam Railways said.
Work on the Vietnam bullet train line is due to start in 2012, with services beginning on the first section by 2020. The high-speed train will probably be financed by a mix of overseas development aid, state funding and public-private partnerships.
A ticket for the full Hanoi-to-HCM City high-speed rail journey may cost about 75 percent of the average current plane fare, Bang said.
China is also working on building high-speed trains to support its surging economy. The country in December opened a high-speed rail link of more than 1,000 kilometers between the cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan.
Back in 2004, South Korea became the second Asian nation after Japan to build a high-speed train service between major cities.
The Tokaido Shinkansen, connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka was inaugurated in 1964 as the first shinkansen (high speed train or bullet train line) and the world’s first high speed train service. At that time the trains already ran at about 200 km/h. Nowadays they reach speeds of 300 km/h.

Each ASEAN cities do but how I see it. The first that will get implemented will be the one connected KL and SG

Is the bullet train between KL and SG under construction? How fast? That's really cool.
Manila-X March 26th, 2010, 07:03 AM Is the bullet train between KL and SG under construction? How fast? That's really cool.
The better term to describe is high speed rail.
The KL-SG one are just proposals.
chengo March 26th, 2010, 08:23 AM Philippines' plan to have a bullet train. I heard that Thailand and Vietnam do have plans, too.
Yes...

according to the plan , they want to bring them back to life
tollfreak March 26th, 2010, 06:32 PM ^^ we use to have that also in Jakarta (built by the Dutch colonialists). However, the government in the late 1950's started to dismantle the trams, which consisted of 6 lines running in Central Jakarta, parts of West and East Jakarta. Sadly now the removal of the tram tracks seem like a bad move considering the amount of traffic jams that jakartans have to endure due to a lack of mass transit options beside the commuter rails and BRT.
@WANCH: how about the North-East (Purple) Line in SMRT? isn't that a heavy metro?
sutee March 27th, 2010, 12:10 AM It does but it doesn't have the organized rail system that other ASEAN cities have. Its the same with the current SRT commuter rails of Bangkok.
srt line is shit but i hope after this done , we can include 1 comuter line in bangkok in the next 2 year

Ok updated

THE second phase of Singapore's newest train line, the Circle Line, was officially opened by Transport Minister Raymond Lim on Friday evening.
Eleven new stations on this line will start operations from Saturday morning at 6am.
The stations are: Tai Seng, MacPherson, Paya Lebar, Mountbatten, Dakota, Stadium, Nicoll Highway, Esplanade, Promenade, Bras Basah and Dhoby Ghaut. They will link up with the five existing Circle Line stations which were opened last May.
Commuters can expect to cut their travelling time and cost using the new line. A commuter travelling from Paya Lebar to Bartley station would normally take 38 minutes and spend $1.61 on his fare. With the new CCL, he will take six minutes and pay $0.66.
By next year, the entire 33km Circlie Line will open and give commuters more travelling options.
Among the stations yet to open are Telok Blangah, Holland Village and Kent Ridge.
