The island where the castle of San Sebastian has been continuous settlement since antiquity. According to tradition this was the Temple of Kronos, then a lookout tower-Muslim, and by the fifteenth century rather than a shrine to San Sebastian Advocado.

In the year 1457 a craft Venetian took refuge on the island because of a plague epidemic, rebuilt the tower and built a hermitage dedicated to San Sebastian. In this place even carved the arms of the city of Venice in recognition of the hospitality of Cadiz.

After the sacking English late sixteenth century, the place went to the castle, the tower rebuilt in 1613 under the leadership of Juan de la Fuente Hurtado, providing it with artillery and in turn making services beacon for mariners. In 1706 works began on the castle on the island that faced the city. In the year 1739 the castle with 17 cannons that controlled the entrance to the Creek and south into the bay fairway. In 1860 the castle was reinforced casemated batteries. During the nineteenth century was built a long pier on which the castle was unnido ground at the door of La Caleta, but initially had to wait for low tide to enter the castle.
