Ilgar October 13th, 2009, 12:52 AM Azerbaijan Hava Yollari
http://www.atlasnavigator.com/atlas/imagecache/main/sites/atlas/4/Azerbaijan_Hava_Yollari.JPG
The history of passenger air transportation of Azerbaijan Republic takes them to 1923 when regular passenger flights started to operate between Baku and Tbilisi on Germany made aircraft "Yunkers". Before Azerbaijan Republics independence in 1991 "Azerbaijan Airlines" (AZAL) was a part of "Aeroflot".
Being one of the branches of "Aeroflot" ,National Carrier "Azerbaijan Hava Yollari" was operating only regional and domestic flights within the Soviet Union as "Aeroflot: had a monopoly on operation of international flights. Now when Azerbaijan is an independent state "Azerbaijan Airlines" as a National Carrier is proud of offering high level of services and hospitality to their customers on international air markets according to standards and recommendations of ICAO and IATA.
With its advantageous geographical position and high standard of handling facilities Heydar Aliyev International Airport is fastly becoming a busy hub in the region for transit and connecting flights between East and West, North and South. On the 09th of October 2000 a remarkable event took place in the history of "Azerbaijan Airlines" - the first brand new Boeing 757 - 200 aircraft of the Air Company landed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Since then the aircraft fleet of Azerbaijan Airlines have been considerably reinforced by the Boeings, Airbuses and from the 2005 under the contract with Airbus Industry for supply of brand new Airbuses. They are also serving air routes of the company - the first Airbus A-319, named after second largest city of Azerbaijan "GANJA" joined aircraft fleet of Azerbaijan Airlines on 2nd of September 2005.
On 24th of August 2007 a brand new aircraft - ATR 42-500, arrived at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. This aircraft is now operating on Domestic routes as well as on international destinations.
Modernization of aircraft fleet allows "Azerbaijan Airlines" to expand network of international flights and provide their passengers with high quality of services along with traditionally warm and friendly Azeri hospitality.

Ilgar July 22nd, 2010, 08:24 PM Azerbaijan Airlines Orders Boeing 767-300 Passenger and Freighter Models
FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Azerbaijan Airlines have signed an agreement to substitute two Next-Generation 737 airplanes for one 767-300ER (extended range) and two 767 Freighters, a new model type for the Baku, Azerbaijan-based airline. The substitution has been updated on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website.
"With our centralized geographic location, Azerbaijan is becoming a busy hub in the region between east and west and north and south," said Jahangir Askerov, president of Azerbaijan Airlines. "We are capitalizing on this development by expanding our long-haul passenger fleet and growing our cargo business with the proven efficiencies of the 767 Freighter."
Including today's announcement, Azerbaijan Airlines has a total of eight Boeing airplanes on order: two 767-300ERs, two 767 Freighters, two Next-Generation 737s and two 787-8s.
"With the economic recovery gaining momentum at various speeds around the world, our customers are making changes to their fleets to accommodate the upturn," said Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We have worked with Azerbaijan Airlines to make changes to its order book that meet its needs."
The Boeing 767 family is a complete family of clean, quiet, fuel-efficient airplanes that provide maximum market versatility in the 200- to 300-seat market. The Boeing 767 family includes three passenger models -- the 767-200ER, 767-300ER and 767-400ER -- and a medium-widebody freighter, which is based on the 767-300ER fuselage.

* Designed by Arup, a new terminal building will promote Baku and Azerbaijan to the wider world.
* Projected demand of 3m passengers per year in a 53,000m2 terminal.
Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku is the principal airport of Azerbaijan, and potentially a major hub for the whole of the Caucasus region.
In designing a new international terminal at the existing airport, Arup aimed to create a facility equal to the very best in the world. The terminal is designed to meet a projected demand of 3m passengers per year.
Encouraging relaxation, minimising stress
The aim of the aesthetic design is to create spaces which are a pleasure to use, encourage relaxation and minimise stress. This is achieved through generously-proportioned, naturally-lit spaces with extensive internal and external views. The terminal will also offer luxury shopping and leisure areas.
The design includes a tapered façade which gives the building a unique appearance. The innovative shape allows light from the façade and roof to enter the space. Skylights are an integral part of the steel structure of the roof.
Design by Arup
Arup is responsible for the design of a new façade for the existing international terminal. The work will include stripping the existing façade, adding insulation and replacing with a metal mesh façade in harmony with the design of the new terminal.
The terminal design has been greatly influenced by the vision and design ideas of the client, Mr Jahangir Askerov, president of Azerbaijan Airways (AZAL).
Baku is a seismic zone, and the design uses a frame resistant system to allow for seismic forces. The terminal will have eight air bridges and is compatible with the Boeing 676 aircraft.
The construction of this unique project began with the completion of new entrance tollgate in October 2010. The bulk of the remaining construction is scheduled to begin in early 2011 and finish in 2013.

Galandar November 8th, 2010, 06:43 PM Azerbaijan buys more Boeings
Boeing 787-8 Azerbaijan's Silkway Airlines has purchased a Boeing 747-400F cargo plane from Cargolux Airlines International.
The head of the State Civil Aviation Administration, Arif Mammadov, said the the purchase was designed to turn Baku into a link between West and East.
"I want to say that it is the first time we have entered one of the biggest, heaviest aircraft into the state register of Azerbaijan. All the international documentation for this plane will be ready on 10 November, after which it will start to fly under the Azerbaijani flag," Mammadov said.
Mammadov said another Boeing 747-400F would be bought next year.
"In addition, other Azerbaijani companies are also expected to purchase Boeing 747-400Fs in 2011. Of course, more steps will be taken to expand aviation in the future," he said.
Boeing has several orders on its books from Azerbaijan.
"We are planning to supply several passenger planes to Azerbaijan next year and a Boeing-787-8 in 2014," Boeing's senior vice president for the Middle East, Central and South Asia, Martin Bentrott, told APA.
Azerbaijani Airlines (AZAL) are to purchase eight planes from Boeing: two 767-300 ERs, two 767 cargo planes, two 737 and two 787-8 passenger airliners.

Correct me if I am wrong but why have a security check point from the entrance, then at checkin, a 3rd time at custom control.... To top it off no shops, cafes, restaurants on the departure level to be able to spend time with friends, family, loved ones etc prior to sending them off on their trip?:bash:
Placing the negatives aside the design is nice....

The final one for the greasy security guards to have a look at women with the scanners, it's also a poor setup because anyone can have a look at the images once they go through, I've been there several times when a good looking woman has gone through and all the security guards crowd around the monitor to have a good perve.
