View Full Version : Århus photos
mlm March 17th, 2004, 05:09 PM The weather was pretty fine this morning so I though I better go and try out my new camera.
There's all kind of photos, some probably more interesting than others and also some things you've seen before. I started my tour in the southern part of the harbour (at the dark blue dot) and followed the light blue line to the north, ending at the dark blue dot in the top of the map:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/aarhustour/1.jpg
Enough dots, let's get going.
Looking north towards the harbour from Marselisborg Marina:

That's it:) I'll add all new Århus photos to this thread in the future.
Vaidas March 17th, 2004, 05:22 PM Hehe nice to see that spring has come to this lovely city

Kaneda March 17th, 2004, 07:43 PM Nice pictures ! :okay: Love that building on Strandvejen, mini castle. :)
What kind of camera did you buy ?
samminn March 17th, 2004, 07:49 PM Any news on how Bruuns Galleri has affected commerce and shopping in the old centre?
Excellent pics, been to Aarhus a few times and its lovely. Wish I could trade you shopping street with ours in Reykjavik, going numb basically because of suburbian landscraper competition.
DenverDane March 17th, 2004, 08:19 PM :okay: Great photos, mlm! That's a very nice camera you've got there! Crispy clear shots!
mlm March 17th, 2004, 08:41 PM Thanx everyone:wave: Unfortunately the bad weather will be back the next days, but I'll be back shooting when it gets better again:cool:

Last thing I heard was around Christmas. The "old" shops in the pedetrian streets actually sold more than they used to. And Bruuns Galleri was also over budget. Another thing is that many people feared that the area around B.G. would get a lot more traffic but that hasn't really happend either. I think most people here are possitive about B.G. now:)
It was also announced the other day that the "banegårdpladsen" (the area from where the main pedestrian street ends to the rail station) probably will be closed for traffic within a year or 2. This will bring B.G. and the old shopping area "closer".

I bough a Canon EOS 300D:) There's a bit more about it in this thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68576)
I've still only really used the "auto" functions on the cam, but the photos come out really nice and sharp. Here's (http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/theater.jpg) a larger photo, notice how sharp it is. And the original one (almost 3 times larger) is just as sharp:dooby:
Monkey March 17th, 2004, 09:24 PM Aaahhhh ... finally, Mikael! :okay:
Glad you had a nice day so your could take a walk in your home town. :) Super fine layout, map (in English yet! ;) ), captions and all.
You're right, your camera is fantastic! Catching the rooster weather vane on top of the church tower is amazing, as is the gargoyle on top of the theater. I can't say that I'm totally 100% happy with the Clemensborg renovation, but I surely prefer it to a glass & steel fassade! ;)
Btw, Maersk Shipping--they're HUGE indeed! I've talked about that company with tic_tac. I see their containers in the Oakland harbor whenever I come by there, and occasionally I see one being hauled around on trucks on the freeways. I always think of you guys when I see them.
Oberleutnant March 17th, 2004, 09:25 PM I think that it's perfectly safe to say by now that Århus is definetely the best-looking city in our region, capital cities excluded. And your camera is just perfect. I envy you. :) And that you don't have any snow on the streets, unlike some others.
I will be keeping an eye on this thread in the future. There can never be too little Scandinavian stuff here. ;)
NorthStar77 March 17th, 2004, 09:43 PM Very sharp and good images. Far sharper than I manage with my Olympus c220. And that map with the path and all, damn, maybe I'll have to upgrade the maps in my threads too ;)
Århus looks very beautifull and..danish. Danish cities are much better looking that Norwegian ones, me thinks. And harbours, they are ugly everywere.

Thanx WH, you always have nice comments:wave:
I actually like Clemensborg but we can't all have the same taste. I was looking for some old photos but couldn't find any. And I really have no idea how it was before (was under renovation when I moved here). I'll keep looking though:) On the next photo (with Magasin) you can actually see one of the other facades of Clemensborg, this one is glass (the one to the left)
Yes Maersk is huge indeed, I also remember seeing a lot of their containers when I was in Miami. The owner is also by far the richest man in Denmark. I read that they just ordered 110 new ships to be delivered over the next 3 years:nuts:

I don't know about that, I've only been to Göteborg and Malmö of the larger cities in the region outside Denmark and that's a looooooong time ago.
Since we have no change of competing with your contries naturewise we'll have to beat your architectually:D But seriously, lets not compare our cities by which is better looking, there are great cities in all our countries:) I'll hopefully soon have a new bunch of photos for you:)

Again, I find the Norweigen nature to be way over our league so it's of course a question of what people define as beauty:)
And true, most harbours looks like:puke:
Again thanx everyone, now I feel like getting more images for you soon:wave:
wolkenkrabber March 17th, 2004, 10:54 PM it looks really nice :) many old houses i really like the photo of the houses facing then north port!! it looks really nice i love that sort of architecture
tournesol March 18th, 2004, 12:06 AM Yes, it was indeed a beaufiful day today, also here in CPH.
Sunshine and temeratures arround 18 degrees! I also went on a photo tour. Went to the south harbour and Ørestad. The pictures will be posted soon...
Anyway, back to you, mlm. A 70-300 mm lens!!! I envy you. Had one with my old analogue camera, and I'm really missing that with my current compact digital camera. For all I've heard, a EOS 300D should be a super camera, and your pictures only comfirmes this!
The big "castle" on Strandvejen is really one of my favorite buildings in Århus. I wouldn't mind living there!
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/aarhustour/18.jpg
And this picture is not only really great, it also shows one of my many different homes, in my Århus years.
I used to live in the noble white building, no. 4 (or 5) from the left. :)
Also, notice the background. Århus isn't exactly flat! At least not for a danish city ;)
Keep'em coming, mlm :) :) :)
mlm March 18th, 2004, 12:27 AM WOW Tournesol, what an awesome place to live:okay: I also have to get my ass out of this Gellerup dump soon, maybe I should see if I can get into that beautifull castle like building:D
About the lens, when used on a digital camera you have to multiply with 1.6 so it's actually the same as a 112-480 mm for a normal SLR camera:) A guy at a store told me it was roughly the same as 17x zoom on a normal camera, so I can get really close on most things:)
I'll be waiting for you new Cph pics:cheers:
Devilution March 18th, 2004, 08:31 AM I´m impressed! Århus seems so homely and warm not to mention beautiful too. And it´s now officially added to my list of must-visit-places :D
You must´ve paid a big pile of money for that camera of yours but the quality of the pictures definetely shows!
mlm March 18th, 2004, 01:43 PM Today was (and still is) another nice spring day here in Århus so I though I would give you a few more photos.
Here's the map again, I added todays route in darker blue. I started walking to the southeast, then you can figure what way yourself;)
Here's the updated map:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/aarhustour/1.jpg
First a "bonus" photo taking while I was waiting for the bus. This is not a part of the "tour". It's more to the west than you can see on the map. It's another shopping center with about 70 shops (located a few hundred meters from where I live):
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/aarhustour/24.jpg
Let's get going with the tour, first we have Prismet as most of you have probably seen before:

DenverDane March 18th, 2004, 04:23 PM :master: Another amazing tour! Do you by any chance remember how much it costs to visit the musem "The Old Town"?
tournesol March 18th, 2004, 04:27 PM Thanks again mlm, for a lot of familar views. One thing I miss about Århus is the hills. Gives you some great views over the rooftops and you keep discovering new views all the time... :)
You're spoilings us with all your close up photos. Great :okay:
I'm looking forward to visit the new ARoS museum some day...
mlm March 18th, 2004, 04:30 PM Thanx guys:)
@ DenverDane, the entrance fee depends on when you visit it, you can find all the prices HERE (http://www.dengamleby.dk/entre.htm).
Monkey March 18th, 2004, 09:57 PM Glad to see that the weather is holding up so you could go for another photo tour, Mikael! :)
Thank you so much for another treat! Aarhus is lovely, and your new camera really takes great pictures! A couple of comments:
The Department of Justice: is the tower freshly re-covered, and will it turn green over time?
McDonald's: I've noticed that, all over Europe, those bastards find the most dignified & handsome old buildings downtown to install themselves.
Clemensborg: thank you for the extra coverage! :) I hadn't realized that it's so close to the water, and that one side and the glassy addition actually border right on the canal! The reflection of the old buildings on the other side in the glass is lovely! :okay: Also, the soaring interior space is stunning. Please show us more pix when it's actually finished, OK? :angel1:
Outdoor cafes: a sweet lineup of old buildings! :) I bet you can't wait for them to move tables, chairs & umbrellas outside. It must be so pleasant to sit there on a lovely evening!
Ny/Gammel Munkegade: why, that's a respectable hill!
Summary: A GREAT continuation! :banana::banana::banana:
iac1 March 18th, 2004, 10:17 PM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE WORLD !!!!!! GREAT JOB !!! mlm

Hi WH glad you liked em:wave: Let me try to answer the questions.
Yes I think the Department of Justice was re-clad not too long ago. You can see that there are some other things on top of the right side of the building that are green now so this "tower" will probably also turn green. Anyone know how many years it normally take for copper to get this green color?
About McDonalds, yes it's true, it's like that in many European cities:( This spot is probably one of the best locations in Århus right in the middle of the main pedestrian street.
I tried to get acces to the upper floors os Clemensborg but couldn't. I'll try to go there again later when they've finished the work on it:)
The Café's are very cool in the spring and summer. This place is packed with people every friday and saturday sitting outside drinking and having fun.
And yes, as Tournesol also pointed out, Århus is quite hilly. It is really cool but can be a pain if you're on a bike;)
:)
freson March 19th, 2004, 12:43 AM Great fotos mike! Your new camera is amazing!
designwise March 19th, 2004, 07:46 PM WOW !!!!!!!! Århus is superb ! The canal beside Magasin is very beautiful as is the church. Actually everything is beautiful !!!!! The devil photo is really nice too. :okay:
_tictac_ March 19th, 2004, 08:41 PM Wow, I've never seen such beautiful pictures of Aarhus before and I'm glad you didn't let Prismet out, it's amazing!
The picture below reveals the depth just perfectly:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/aarhustour/18.jpg
Also, congratulations on your latest purchase...I see you figured out how to have fun with the zoom, in a professional way that is. :okay:
Keep em coming Mikael, I'm waiting for the next part already  :D
heavyzakura334 August 9th, 2004, 09:01 PM Oh, I wanted to congratulate you on your great shots and tours of Danemark, the pictures are awesome. Thanks for the shots, they allow people to visit places through your photos. thnx
     cheers to the pictures!
iac1 August 31st, 2004, 07:30 PM yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees Arhus I`m comming soon... from 16.IX.2004. and I`m very very happy
so I take hundreds pictures!!!!!!
klaas September 14th, 2004, 07:17 PM Nice pics of a nice city. Lot's of Danish cities looks a bit of the Dutch cities isn't it??
mlm September 14th, 2004, 07:56 PM Thanx klaas:)
And yes, there sure is some similarities between Denmark and The Netherlands. I always feel quite much at home when I visit The Netherlands. Just wish we had the same kind of highrise boom as many Dutch cities have these years;)
klaas September 15th, 2004, 05:09 PM You're welcome in the Netherlands;)I think the reason of the highriseboom in many Dutch cities is because the Netherlands is very densely populated. In the Netherlands lives about 16.000.0000..Denmark about 5.000.0000??
mlm September 15th, 2004, 06:13 PM Yep, only about 5.4 million here, and that's on almost the same land mass as The Netherlands. Dk= 43,094 km2, NL= 41,526 km2 :)
klaas September 20th, 2004, 05:16 PM Maybe in the futher..something like the TT..;):P
iac1 October 2nd, 2004, 08:39 PM hmmm this picture is very nice but but...

Kampflamm December 1st, 2004, 03:35 PM Awesome pictures! All those brick buildings are simply stunning and I like what they've done to that small stream/river next to the renovated building.
MacGowan December 7th, 2004, 01:25 PM Really great pictures, and what a zoom lens! For being such a small city it looks really metropolitan. When u live in Malmö u think of denmark as nothing more then Copenhagen but now i´d really like to go to Århus. How is the nightlife? '
Btw: arent the danish band Kashmir from Århus? they are really good.
Schroedinger's Cat December 11th, 2004, 12:17 PM That's why I like browsing scandinavian forums - there's a lot of interesting architecture typical for northern Europe which I like. :okay:
Hviid March 17th, 2005, 11:51 PM Fantastic pictures mlm :) .. First time I've actually seen them. I love this picture:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/aarhustour/18.jpg
do you by chance have any pictures of some of the hills in Århus? I'd like to see how big they actually are :)
mlm March 18th, 2005, 12:58 AM Thank you DLL :)
I was just browsing my (huge) collection of Århus photos, but couldn't find much of hills. I did find some old ones from the City Hall Tower though, not exactly super quality, but I think it will give you some impressions of the "hills".
These are all taken with an older camera;)

Monkey March 21st, 2005, 09:08 AM I'm totally undone. :wallbash: I could have sworn I saw a brand new thread of Aarhus photos of yours a couple of days ago, mlm. :) What happened? :(
You showed inside shots of the (now practically completed) Clemensborg shopping center that I had criticised earlier. :dunno:
mlm March 21st, 2005, 12:38 PM ^ The must have been in your dreams. I haven't been in Århus since last summer. ;)
Monkey March 21st, 2005, 06:11 PM Lol, OK then. :)
hooghoudt May 29th, 2006, 06:10 PM Great pictures! Are there any cheap hostels in the city of Arhus? I would like to visit Arhus next month.
With google i found the following hostel, but i don't know whether 115 DK is the cheapest i can get (i am a poor student :))
http://www.citysleep-in.dk/
mlm May 29th, 2006, 07:52 PM Thank you. :)
I strongly doubt you'll find anything cheaper than 115 dkr, unless you want to sleep in a park or so. ;) I don't know that hostel, but the price seems okay for a bed in a shared room. Sometimes you have to rent linen too at those places, but you could e-mail them and ask about that. Also, the location is quite good, very close to the pedestrian street.
FREKI May 29th, 2006, 09:47 PM I did wonder how I could have missed this wonderful thread.. but the dates pretty much explains it :)
Great pics nonetheless, it's certainly not a bad place to spend some time and maybe have a few brewskies ;)
Carpenter May 30th, 2006, 05:20 AM nice place for sure
EDK_DK May 30th, 2006, 07:47 AM It's another shopping center with about 70 shops (located a few hundred meters from where I live):
Now I'm a little confused as well. Do you live in Brabrand!!!
mlm May 30th, 2006, 08:32 AM No, I live in Herning;)
I lived in Brabrand for about 2 years (2002-04), when this thread was started. Then moved back to Herning again...
EDK_DK May 30th, 2006, 08:43 AM No, I live in Herning;)
I lived in Brabrand for about 2 years (2002-04), when this thread was started. Then moved back to Herning again...
Ahh.. I see
I have lived in Brabrand as well. Hejrebakken/hejredalsvej (1989-92) Boring city...IMO
mlm May 30th, 2006, 08:54 AM I lived right in the beautiful luxury village known as Gellerupparken, so boring is not the word I would use to descripe it.
I can't remember a time in my life I've been as happy as when sitting in the lorry taking myself and my things back to Herning. :D
Shenpen November 7th, 2006, 01:31 AM I always thought Mejlborg was a cool looking building. Used to house a graphics related business. There is a shot of it from the harbour above.

Shenpen November 7th, 2006, 02:00 AM Further down we find a travel agency: The old building is nicely fittet with a modern slightly green glas facade. The golden buddha on the second flor makes for a nice contrast to the traditional style too.

I will check out imageshack, thanks.
Not sure why I would start another Århus-thread. I dont want to redo what Mikael did, but rather add a few things, new and old.

TohrAlkimista August 19th, 2007, 11:50 PM I've just read an article about this city...and I found interesting the fact it's a great danish center for the design, isn't it?
cernoch August 26th, 2007, 11:31 AM I have been there two years ago. It is a beautiful historical and modern port at the same time. .... I loved even more Hirtshals.

Hmm .. were you perhaps impressed by the elegance of their marina?

cernoch August 27th, 2007, 10:23 AM Why you do not like this town? There is one of the largest aquariums in the world and the most nice beaches (i have ever seen) in its surrounding.

I'm not saying I don't like it. I was merely questioning your conviction that Hirtshals is more lovable than Århus and pointing out that in my opinion it could not be their "marina" that had contributed to this assessment. The beaches in the vicinity of Hirtshals are pretty decent but in fact they're like that all along the west coast between Esbjerg and Skagen, which equals something like 300 kilometres. In other words you don't have to go to Hirtshals to enjoy them.
Nordsøakvariet is something Århus doesn't have, true. As I understand it they just managed to reopen after the fire. Their website is nothing but one big JPG-file (http://www.north-sea.dk/).
cernoch August 27th, 2007, 12:05 PM Here is the actual web page: http://www.nscentre.dk/default.aspx?AreaID=7
I have visited also many other cities (e.g. Viborg, Alborg and Randers) but Hirtshals had the best atmosphere because of its port, beaches, museum and small number of inhabitants.

Thanks.

Well, none of those cities you mention are on the west coast so obviously they don't have the beaches you hold in high regard. There's a number of cities on the west coast in the Hirtshals style that you may like:
Thyborøn, Hanstholm, Ringkøbing, Harboøre, Thorsminde, Ringkøbing, Hvide Sande, Nymindegab and Esbjerg. Løkken and Skagen are also good options for those, who like a more Tivolised approach to their west coast.
ØlandDK August 27th, 2007, 01:04 PM There aren't any nice beaches south of Esbjerg?:dunno:
What about Fanø and Rømø? IMO you'll find some of the best Danish beaches there...

I'm not saying the beaches south of Esbjerg are not nice. What I mean is that south of Esbjerg the characteristics of the beaches change somewhat due to the influence of "Vadehavet" (the "Wadden Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadden_Sea)"). This does not necessarily make them worse but I would argue they make them slightly different from the beaches north of there, which was the kind that our Czech friend liked. Correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption about Vadehavet.
.oreo. June 9th, 2009, 03:28 PM No new pictures? Such a shame! By the way some pictures of Aarhus university would be great! Thanks. ;)
ØlandDK June 9th, 2009, 05:18 PM ^^
There aren't really any active members from Århus so we rarely see any pictures of this city :(
christos-greece June 9th, 2009, 07:17 PM I must say that Arhus town (or city ?) looking indeed very nice; the old achitecture style (red bricks buildings) is amazing
