Rajkot's BRTS update (http://20twentytwo.blogspot.com/2010/11/rajkots-brts-update.html)

The much-awaited 10.7 km pilot project of Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) from Gondal Road chowkdi to Jamnagar Road chowkdi on 150-feet Ring Road is finally gaining some momentum. Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) officials have set June 2011 as the deadline for running BRTS buses on the dedicated corridor. The project is being carried out under the central government-sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Senior RMC officials said the total length of blue corridor (part-1) pilot project from Gondal Road to Jamnagar Road junctions on the 150-feet Ring Road is 10.7 km and will have 13 bus stops on the route. “As per the original design of the BRTS corridor, foot overbridges were designed on the dedicated corridors to reach the bus stops, but now we plan to have an underpass to reach the BRTS bus stops. We will first construct an underpass as an experiment near the Big Bazaar junction on the BRTS route. We will see which would be more convenient from all aspects and then take a final decision,’’ said a senior RMC official. Sources said the underpass will be around 18 to 24 meters in length and 5 to 7.5 meters in width. “In all, there will be 14 junctions on the 10.7 km BRTS route. If this experiment goes well, we will decide whether to go for a foot over-bridge or an underpass at all the junctions,” sources said. RMC officials have also been learning from the successful BRTS experiment in Ahmedabad.
“We will soon have a meeting of all the stake holders regarding the BRTS project where in everybody concerned will be invited to discuss the plan. The issue of the underpass will also be discussed. Common people will also be invited for putting in their suggestions,” said the RMC official. The BRTS project in the city has already been delayed. Earlier, RMC had planned to start running BRTS buses on pilot corridor from January 2011. Now, the deadline has been extended till June 2011.
The entire project will be implemented in three corridors — blue, green and red — in a phased manner and cover 104.86 sq km area in the city. The total length of BRTS project is 63.50 km.

Rajkot realtors want Infra development in outskirts (http://www.sify.com/finance/rajkot-realtors-want-infra-development-in-outskirts-rba-news-equity-kmzbvgdhaai.html)

Rajkot Builder Association (RBA) feels that the city needs to develop infrastructure in the outskirts of Rajkot to drive growth in the real estate sector.

"Rajkot is one of the most developing cities. While the growth in realty so far is good, development of infrastructure in the outskirts would help to grow more business. It would also help people to get properties at affordable rates", said Hitesh Bagdai, president of RBA.

The size of the real estate market in the city is estimated to be around Rs 4000 crore and is expected to cross Rs 5000 mark in the next year. RBA felt that to cater to the demand of the city, at least 15000-20000 residential properties are needed every year. At present about 40000 residential properties are developed per year in Rajkot.

Hement Patel, chairman of RBA said "Most buyers are end-users. The proportion of investors is around 15 per cent. Requirement for residential projects is on the rise as industries like engineering, automobiles, forging are fast growing. Of the net realty projects, nearly 20 per cent are commercial developments, while 80 per cent projects are for residential purposes"

Rajkot auto-comp industry eyes growth as auto giants look to Guj

Vimukt Dave / Mumbai/ Rajkot June 21, 2011, 0:51 IST

With the recent spurt in activities in the automobile space in Gujarat as Ford and Maruti come knocking, the auto-components industry at Rajkot is eying huge growth in the coming years. The component makers in Rajkot expect at least 20-30 per cent growth in business.

The automotive component makers in Rajkot had witnessed good growth after Tata Motors parked its Nano project at Sanand near Ahmedabad. Earlier this month, Maruti Suzuki chairman R C Bhargava visited Gujarat and the company has shown keen interest in setting up a manufacturing plant here. Meanwhile, the state government is in final stages of discussion with Ford India which has sought for 550 acres of land at Sanand. Ford is almost all set to enter Gujarat.

"It will surely boost the auto components industry of Rajkot. As auto giants like Maruti and Ford show interest to come to Gujarat, demand of auto-components will increase. The industry at Rajkot may witness more than 30 per cent growth," said Dhanubhai Vora, president, Greater Rajkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GRCCI). At present the auto-component industry at Rajkot is clocking a 15-20 per cent growth per year, industry sources claimed. Rajkot has more than 500 auto component manufacturers with a net turnover of around Rs 1500 crore.

"The entry of these major automakers in Gujarat will attract new investment in Rajkot auto-components industry as well. Moreover, one cannot ignore the possibility of companies from outside Rajkot coming to set up units here," Suresh Santoki, managing director of Amul Industries said. The state first hit the headlines when Tata Motors decided to relocate the Nano project here from Bengal. Untill then the only prominent automobile company in the state was General Motors which had set up base in Halol. Atul Auto, however, has been present in Rajkot for years.

Some of the Rajkot-based units have even expanded to cater to the rising demand thanks to the Tata Nano. Amul Industries, for example, has invested around Rs 25 crore on new unit at Sanand to supply parts to the Tata Nano plant. "Smaller players will have to move on the way to automation to reduce the problem of shortage of skilled manpower," Santoki said. As Gujarat emerges as an auto hub, it will not only provide a boost to the auto-component makers business, it will also cut down the cost of transportation significantly.

"The Rajkot industry will see the growth when auto makers start operation in Gujarat, and it will help to expand business. Moreover it will cut down the cost of transportation. The industry would have move towards automation to beat the issue of manpower shortage," said Upen Modi, managing director of Unitech Engineers Private Limited. The company is setting up a new unit with an investment of Rs 15 crore to meet demand. Of the 500 auto component manufacturers at Rajkot, around 50 are suppliers to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) while the remaining are small players which supply to the retail market.

The industry in Rajkot produces more than 300 types of parts for the automobile industry and employs about 10,000 people

RMC launches demolition drive

RAJKOT: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) started demolition drive against illegally constructed buildings in the newly developed areas of the city. In the past two days, more than 50 foundations of under construction buildings were razed by the town planning (TP) department of RMC, under orders from RMC commissioner.

According to assistant town planner M D Sagathia, the drive was carried out in Suchit societies (construction on agriculture lands without prior RMC permission) on Morvi Road. Most of these constructions were done during night so that RMC officials didn't come to know about it.

But on the night of June 20, with direct orders from RMC commissioner Dinesh Brahmbhatt, TP team conducted demolition drive in Jamunaprark and Satyam Park societies situated on Morvi Road. In the last two days, more then 50 illegal structures were demolished and 300 kg of iron and 200 bags of cement were seized.

Brahmbhatt said, "In Rajkot, more than 40,000 such illegal constructions exist. Suchit societies were developed under the protection of influential politicians of the city. We have not demolished those constructions where people are residing, but we have commenced a drive to raze those constructions which were under construction. This drive will continue in full swing in coming days also."

City starts drive on traffic violators

RAJKOT: In a major crackdown on traffic rule violators, city traffic police on Wednesday detained hundreds of vehicles in the city. The vehicles which were detained included school vans, school auto-rickshaws, commuters driving without licence, not possessing PUC certificate or driving without proper registration documents, talking on mobile while driving and having fancy numberplates among others. All the detained vehicles were taken to police headquarters.

"We have detained more than 230 vehicles, most of them were school going children who were caught driving without licence under the age of 16. Many of them were driving triples. Similarly, school vans who were found ferrying schoolchildren above limit, were also detained. This was a surprise drive,'' police inspector, traffic branch, Rajkot, A D Shrivastav said.

The surprise drive begun on Wednesday morning on major city roads and entire traffic force was on the road. Police said the detained vehicles will be released after they pay fine for breaking traffic rules. "We want to educate people to follow the traffic rules which in the long run will help in saving many lives on the road. The idea is not to collect money, but to implement the law properly,'' Shrivastav said.

Sources in the city traffic police department said despite repeated warnings and awareness programmes, people did not follow traffic rules and schoolchildren, who were not given licence by regional traffic office, were making their life as well as others' miserable.

RAJKOT: Residents of Harsiddhi Society in the city on Saturday morning attempted to set ablaze a ward office of Rajkot Municipal Corporation for not clearing garbage that had accumulated on a private plot.

Cleanliness has become a serious issue in Rajkot as several complaints of residents have fallen on deaf ears of municipal authorities. In the past few weeks, ward offices had seen protests by residents. Incidents of dumping garbage on municipal officer's table have also been reported of late.

Residents of the society of ward no. 1 near Gandhigram area have been complaining about garbage lying unattended near their residences, but municipal authorities didn't pay much attention, it is alleged.

On Saturday morning, a group of residents went to the ward office on the 150-feet ring road. When they found that it was locked, they got furious and pelted stones and tried to set the office ablaze.

When contacted, office clerk Sanjay Dave said, "We received a complaint by residents of garbage lying in an open private plot on Friday. We ordered safai workers to clean it, but early on Saturday residents came to the ward office and found it closed since we come to the office only at 10 am. Some unidentified people threw stones and flaming objects into the office through an open window. A few papers were burnt and furniture was damaged. Later in the day, the area was cleared of the garbage."

When ward no.1 councillor Bababhai Ahir was contacted, he said, "Cleaning of open plots is not the responsibility of safai workers, although they used to do it. In this area, we had cleared that particular open plot earlier, but garbage had accumulated there again. Such protests are wrong. People should cooperate with authorities in such cases."

After Ahmedabad, it’s now time for the people of Rajkot to have a chance to ride in Mercedes-Benz.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation is going to start the trial run of the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz bus this Thursday between Gondal Road chokdi to Jamnagar Road chokdi on the ring road under the pilot project.

A special training for driving this bus has been given. The bus has already arrived and presently in process to complete the needed RTO formalities.

Ahmedabad: The civic centres of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) bear a deserted look these days. Not too long ago, hundreds of people used to crowd outside these centres, wanting to know about their tax payment deadlines or how to pay electricity and water bills.

But that was before the RMC implemented its mobile governance project, providing useful information to the residents of one of Gujarat’s largest cities.

“There are no more long queues,” says Sanjay Gohil, deputy electronic data processing manager at RMC and a part of the four-member team that designed the m-governance project. “The longest queue at RMC headquarters and any of our six collection centres is not longer than 10-15 people, which used to be 400-500 earlier.”

Loading video

“The average time to get to the window for a person used to be more than 2 hours; which has now reduced to a little over 10 minutes,” adds Gohil.

Implemented in 2009, the RMC sends text messages to 74,000 registered citizens regarding infant vaccination schedules, updates on property, professional and water tax transactions, status of citizens’ applications of birth and death registrations, bill payment to vendors and contractors under the m-governance project.

This was not RMC’s first attempt to make life easy for citizens living in 23 wards spread across 104.86 sq. km through digital governance. Back in 2000, the civic body had launched an e-governance project; it tried to provide information through its website www.rmc.gov.in.

But the programme was not too successful, as only around 10% of taxpayers used the Internet. The rest continued to queue outside the RMC offices.

Then in 2009, RMC’s electronic data processing department, headed by Mahesh Gohel, thought of using mobile phones to reach more people.

“While computers with Internet connections are still not so popular in Rajkot, almost all adult citizens have access to cell phones,” Gohel says. “We thought of using this medium to communicate important information and designed a mobile governance application and content development in-house and tied up with Idea Cellular as our mobile service provider.”

Using the interactive feature of this project, users can also know details of their property, water and professional tax outstanding dues, property name change details, send property tax assessment requests and lodge complaints about civic problems.

Gohil says long queues also meant poor tax collection and the initiative has led to better collections. .

In 2008-09, RMC’s total tax collection for property and water was Rs98 crore, which rose to Rs140 crore in 2010-11 after the service was implemented. The body has also closed 14 of the 15 complaint centres, on which it used to spend Rs50 lakh annually.

M-governance has also brought procedural transparency. RMC has a call centre that receives all text messages on grievances. These messages are forwarded to concerned officials, who send a message back acknowledging the receipt of the complaint, another message on visiting the place of the complaint, and a final one when the complaint is resolved. Those who lodge the complaints are also sent messages at every stage. “At the end of the day, daily income, expenditure and grievance management statistics are sent as text messages to all the higher officers. This has made the process transparent and faster,” says Gohel.

The cost of running the project is Rs11 lakh, including mobile operator and call centre costs. There is no additional cost of content development and software upgrades as these are done in-house.

“The expenditure on this project is peanuts if we compare it with the benefits,” Gohel says.

Rajkot civic body to install more kiosks for paying taxesTNN Jul 20, 2011, 10.40pm IST
RAJKOT: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) will soon install five more multi-functional transaction kiosks across the city so that residents can pay property and water taxes more easily. The decision has been taken after more than 600 people used the kiosk at Amin Marg civic centre to pay taxes worth Rs 33.28 lakh.

RMC officials expect that within one year, about five per cent of tax-payers will switch over to internet and kiosk-based payment modes in the city. The kiosk works like an ATM, where residents can come and pay their taxes at any time in the day without standing in lines.

The civic body is one of the first in the state to introduce such a system. "At present, people pay their dues either at different city civic centers or through post offices and have to wait in queues often," an RMC official said. "At the kiosk, citizens can pay their due by cheque and cash. Within two months of installing the kiosk at Amin Marg, many people started using it. This system will help us manage crowds and save citizens' time as well," the official added.

Other services like professional tax and housing scheme EMI collections will be added to the kiosk in a phased manner.

RMC also allows paying taxes through its website, using credit cards. Officials say 618 people have used the website in last three months to make payments. RMC collects around Rs 140 crore annually from property tax and water charges in the city.

The civic body has already been running various e-governance and M-governance services for its citizens which include 15 SMS-based services, for which it recently bagged a national award.

RAJKOT: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation intends to develop an environment and people-friendly transport system for the city. With this objective in view, the RMC had assigned a pre-feasibility study on urban transport in the city to Gopa Worldwide Consultants. The study, funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB), done between May and December 2010 under the auspices of the Cites Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), demonstrates the benefits of a coordinated approach to public transport planning.

The pre-feasibility study touched upon the subject of infrastructure, institutional development/reform, effective management, policy and regulatory frameworks and has recommended a strategy to improve public transport, infrastructure development and capacity-building among other things.

"The principle objective of the study is to design an environment and people-friendly transport sector," said Alpana Mitra, officer on special duty, RMC.

RAJKOT: It is a nightmarish experience for any commuter to pass through the Hospital Chowk in the city. Traffic chaos will simply get on one`s nerves. And the problem is highlighted in the pre-feasibility study (PFS) on urban transport.

The study is divided into two parts. One consists of `soft` measures and is focused largely on institutional developments while the other is about infrastructure.

Six traffic `bottleneck junctions` in the city were selected for the study. The objective of the study was to improve urban transport system in Rajkot. The junctions were Jawahar Road/Jamnagar Road (Hospital Chowk), Kuvadava Road/Dhebar Road/ (Mochi Bazar Chowk), Dhebar Road/Kenal Road (Bhutkhana Chowk), Gondal Road/80 Feet Main Road (Makkam Chowk) and the railway under bridge at Lakshminagar.

Rajkot wants to raise FSI all over city (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/rajkot/Rajkot-wants-to-raise-FSI-all-over-city/articleshow/11329275.cms)

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RKC) wants to increase the FSI across the city. Mayor Janak Kotak said he would meet the urban development minister in this regard. "We are working out a proposal to increase the FSI in the city as a whole as it is an urgent need to meet the requirement of a fast growing city,'' Kotak said.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has in principle approved the proposal to FSI along the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor on the 150 ft Ring Road.

As of now, 1.50 FSI is permitted in low-rise buildings while 1.80 in high-rise buildings. The RMC plans to increase it to 2.25 and 2.66 respectively along the BRTS route.

The 10.70 km pilot BRTS project is underway from Gondal Chowkdi to Madhapar Chowkdi and RMC officials are expecting to run BRTS buses on the dedicated corridor soon. They hope to raise Rs 120 crore for the RMC by selling extra FSI along the 10 km BRTS corridor in city. "The proposal will now be sent for approval to the Urban Development department of the state government,'' said Kotak

http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/state-to-get-two-new-central-jails/913635/

Ahmedabad Two new Central jails set up at Surat and Rajkot would officially start in the last week of this month.

The two districts jails of Rajkot and Surat have undergone a massive expansion plan where more barracks, space for jail officials, training centres have been set up.

ADGP Prisons P C Thakur said, “The Central jails are required in Rajkot and Surat for smoothing up the functions. Having Central jails in all the four commissionarates in the state would streamline the population of prisoners in the state.”

While Surat Central Jail is expected to accommodate nearly 3,000 prisoners, the Rajkot Central Jail would accommodate 1,000 to 1,200 prisoners.

The Ahmedabad (Sabarmati) Central Jail that was housing prisoners from Ahmedabad, north Gujarat (four districts), Saurashtra (eight districts) and Kutch, who are under life terms, undertrials, Saurashtra- Kutch prisoners with more than five years term and north Gujarat prisoners with more than six months term.

Hence, the overcrowding at Ahmedabad Central Jail is the high in the state. The new Rajkot Central Jail would take away nearly half the population of prisoners from Ahmedabad, prison officials said.

The Vadodara Central Jail that was accommodating prisoners from the whole of central Gujarat and south Gujarat.

The south Gujarat prisoners with six months term, women prisoners with one year term and other prisoners with life term and undertrials are lodged in Vadodara Central Jail.

According to the officials, although Vadodara Central Jail accommodated south Gujarat prisoners, the Surat sub-jail was badly overcrowding with prisoners. Looking at the alarming rise in prisoners in Surat, the Prisons Department decided to convert the district jail to Central jail.

The prisons officials said while the Surat district jail has capacity of 300 prisoners only, at present, it has 1,600 prisoners. However, there is not much overcrowding in Rajkot district jail but the neighbouring district jails of Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Amreli sub-jail was overcrowding with undertrials.

The state police would appoint two new superintendents for the Rajkot and Surat Central jails respectively.

The Prisons Department has already begun shortlisting jail staffers for the two new Central jails. The 107 jail assistants, who recently finished their training at Sabarmati Central Jail, would be posted in Rajkot and Surat Central Jails.

Artificial quartz, marble unit to come up near Rajkot

Tile manufacturing company H&R Johnson (India) will set up a new plant near Rajkot by using Chinese technology to roll-out artificial quartz and marble products. The unit, having a cumulative annual capacity of 9.6 million square feet, is expected to begin commercial production by mid-February.

A 50:50 joint venture partnership between H&R Johnson and Rajkot-based Antique Granito, this new unit will herald the company's foray into the engineered marble and quartz business. This is the fourth joint venture partnership that the company has forged in Gujarat.

It already has three units manufacturing tiles in the state that function under different tie-ups with Antique Granito, Spectrum and Small Tiles Pvt Ltd. H&R Johnson already owns 50 per cent equity stake in Antique Granito and Morbi-based Small Tiles.

“We will be importing the raw material needed for engineered marble from countries like Vitenam and Greece, while those for quartz will be sourced locally,” said T J P Rao, SBU head-Marble & Quartz, of the company which it set up its first tile-manufacturing plant in Gujarat in 2005.

The commercial production of quartz will begin by mid-February at the Rs 50 crore unit, while that of marble will begin by March-end.

Engineered marble is an artificial marble made from marble lumps or marble chips and powders. Similarly, engineered quartz is a denser product, compare to granite stone. It is made entirely from hard powders and bonded together with polyester resin.

The company also plans to export a sizeable quantum of quartz produced at this unit to European and North American markets. It had clocked Rs 1,500 crore in sales last year.

Cool Idea......
-------------------

Other than hosting matches, the Madhavrao Scindia International Cricket Stadium on Race Course Road will be put to another interesting use. In the near future, the stadium's roof will have solar panels installed, which will power nearly 40,000 streetlights that dot Rajkot's roads.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has invited international bids for preparing a detailed project report for its 'Solar Power Cricket Stadium.' RMC commissioner Ajay Bhadoo said that proposals have been invited from qualified and experienced consultancy firms and institutes. "We thought that if the stadium's roof which has a usable area of approximately 5,500 square metres could be converted into a solar panel. The energy thus generated could be used to light up the stadium during the matches as well as the street lights,'' said Bhadoo.

Solar power could also help bring down RMC's electricity bill. Presently, the 40,000 street lights consume 10.88 MW electricity per year and the civic body pays for Rs 5 crore as bills, said Alpana Mitra, officer on special duty (OSD), RMC.

"Apart from matches, solar panel could be connected to the grid and it would help us to compensate for the energy used by the street lights," said Mitra. The initial project cost is estimated at Rs 30 crore. "We have initiated an administrative process in this regard and floated an advertisement for the appointment of the consultant for the same. Soon, a project proposal shall be submitted to Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) and the Union ministry for new and renewable energy, for financial assistance. We will apply under the Clean Energy Fund of Prime Minister's Scheme,'' said a senior RMC official.

RMC is also upgrading this international stadium and hoping to host more cricket matches, league matches and club cricket.

Rajkot machine tools industry grows despite slowdown (http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/rajkot-machine-tools-industry-grows-despite-slowdown/470096/)

Despite an economic slowdown in economy, the Rajkot based machine tools industry is witnessing a steady growth in recent times. Thanks to increased automation in the engineering sector and good growth in manufacturing field, demand for machine tools, especially the ones with computer numeric controls (CNC).

"We were wary about our growth amidst the current economic slow down. But domestic demand for machine tools have been on a constant rise, not only in Rajkot but also across India. In fact, demand for CNC machine tools itself have increased by 30-40 per cent while that of conventional ones grew by 10-15 per cent as compared to last year," said Jay Mavani, joint secretary, Machine Tools Manufacturer’s Association of Rajkot (MTMA).

Mavani attributed the reason for growth in demand to increased automation in related industries.

"As most of the companies in Rajkot as well as in other parts of the country are moving towards automation, demand of automatic and semi automatic machines has increased during past one year and will continue this year too," he added.

At 450 units, the Rajkot machine tools industry stands at number position in the country as a cluster.

During financial year 2011-12, it pegged a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore, while this year the industry is expecting over 20-25 per cent growth, thereby tapping more than Rs 1,200 crore of turnover.

"Auto components and engineering sector is doing very well and automation progress is going on various sectors. Further, we have lots of orders yet to be completed and more are on their way in the coming days," Parakramsinh Jadeja, managing director of Jyoti CNC said.

One of the largest CNC machine manufacturing company, Jyoti CNC Automation Private Limited invested about Rs 250 crore last year on capacity expansion. The company also pegged a turnover of around Rs 400 crore.

As a cluster, Rajkot alone consumes about 600-650 high value fully automatic CNC machine every year and according to industry sources, it is expected to cross over 750 this year. "It is hard to convert conventional machine tools to CNC as it requires huge amount of investment but capable players are now manufacturing both simultaneously," Mavani added.

Auto-Component makers in Rajkot in top-gear (http://www.bsmotoring.com/news/auto-component-makers-in-gujarat-in-top-gear/4952/1)

With their eyes set on the growth path, Rajkot-based auto components manufacturers are planning to invest Rs 200-250 crores towards capacity expansion and automation during the current financial year 2012-13.

According to industry sources, in past two years, more than 100 new manufacturing units have started their operations in this region. Courtesy, a number of automobile majors setting up their operations in Gujarat.

This has also prompted many of the Rajkot-based auto components manufacturers to expand their production capacity. The auto components industry in the region is growing at the annual rate of 30-40 per cent.

"Over Rs 250 crore worth of investments are expected to be made in components industry at Rajkot during the current financial year. This is because several auto giants are eyeing Gujarat for their manufacturing facilities. Moreover, small players are endeavoring to become tier-1 suppliers," Hemant Shiparia, past chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Saurashtra and Kutch region.

Adding further he said, "Most of the players in Rajkot are tier-2 suppliers and doing aggressive marketing for their products in national and international market through participating in auto exhibitions."

Tier - 1 suppliers are those who supply components directly to the original equipment makers (OEMs), while tier-2 suppliers supply these components to bulk buyers.

Amul Industries, a leading suppliers of auto components to OEMs, is also expanding its production capacity of crank shafts from the current 3,000 units to 5,000 units per months. For this, about Rs 5 crore worth of investment is planned. The company currently supplies parts to auto companies like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Layland, John Deere and several others.

"It becomes necessary for us to expand capacities as auto components demand has increased in past two years. Moreover, manpower shortage in the industry forces us to go for automation. Many manufacturers from Rajkot are investing depending upon their capacity," said Sanjiv Vadodaria, director of Royal Engineers.

Royal Engineers makes pins, steering and suspension parts for cars. The company exports over 70 per cent of its production to the European countries. It is a tier-2 supplier in India and now trying to become tier-1 supplier.

"We are now trying to be a direct suppliers to auto major and for that we are preparing to double our production in this year with an investment of about Rs 25-30 lakh on automation," Vadodaria said.

Another Rajkot-based components manufacturer Kadvani Forge Limited that supplies gear box parts to Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors, Tata Motors and Ford, is also planning partial automation at its plant.

Himanshu Dhaduk, managing director of Kadvani Forge said, "We are going to invest about Rs 30-40 lakh in our plant for automation. It will reduce our dependence on manpower and increase our quality. We are also focusing to utilise our production capacity from present 1,500 tonnes to 2,800 tonnes per month."

City-based ISK Bearings Industries - the only producer of clutch release bearing and wheel hub unit in India is considering to start new unit in Rajkot.

"Currently, we are at the developing stage as we are just two years old company. There are several expansion plans, under which we will invest about Rs 1 crore during this year on machinery and new channel line of production," said Haresh Hadvani, managing partner of ISK Bearing Industries.

ISK has also signed an MoU with Gujarat government in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit held in January 2011. Company has demanded land near Rajkot to start state of the art production unit.

According to industry estimate, there are around 500 auto component manufacturers at Rajkot. Out of these around 50 are suppliers to OEMs, while the remaining are small players that supply to the retail market. The industry in Rajkot produces more than 300 types of parts for the automobile industry and employs about 10,000 people. The industry has a turnover of around Rs 800-1000 crore per annum.

Finally some good newsss....

The proposal of shifting Rajkot airport has been finalized after getting a nod from the Airport Authority of India (AAI), state aviation department, and the state government, said sources from the Rajkot district collectorate.

"Now that the decision has been taken, a fresh round of deliberations will take place. The new airport is proposed to be set up either in Khanderi or Parapipaliya on 200-acre of land. There will be a meeting between AAI officials and the district collector in this regard within three-four days," said an official from the collectorate.

The meeting will discuss various issues pertaining to the feasibility of the project including technical aspects during landing and take-off and wind directions, the official added.

Worl on 2nd Ring Road to start soon (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/rajkot/Work-on-2nd-Ring-Road-to-start-soon/articleshow/13457299.cms)

If everything goes as per the plan, the Rajkot Urban Development Authority (RUDA) would soon begin the work of second Ring Road in the city.

On Thursday, Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) commissioner and chairman of RUDA Ajay Bhadoo met around 150 farmers of seven villages whose land would be acquired for the construction of the new road.

According to RUDA officials, the second Ring Road would be constructed from Jamnagar Road to Gondal Road and will be 20 km long and 45 meter wide. The Ring Road has been divided into two parts. One part is from Jamnagar Road to Kalawad Road and second is Kalawad Road to Gondal Road. The Ring Road will pass through Ghanteshwar, Munjka, Mota Mava, Mavdi, Pal, Kangishiyali and Vavdi village's revenue limit area.

Bhadoo said that RUDA has already issued tenders for selecting developers for the road.

"The new Ring Road will help ease traffic in the city as well as in the expanding city areas in the western part," he said.

According to RUDA officials, the farmers are ready to give their land for Ring Road amicably.

RUDA officials said that the Ring Road project will be executed on built, finance, operate and transfer basis.

Yeah, its sad. We need more Rajkotwalas to represent their city. Its a shame because Rajkot is growing so fast.

I think it is the smallest city in India to have BRTS under implementation which is a proud fact.

My visit to Rajkot left me with a positive impression of the city. Praises for Jamnagar, Porbandar and Bhuj but can't say much for Junagadh, Dwarka and Bhavnagar. Saurastra's potential is under appreciated compare to rest of Gujarat. Some of those Kings have done good job building their kingdoms during British Raj under the circumstances.

Residents of Rajkot will soon have another venue to spend their leisure time on weekends and other holidays. For a city deprived of amusement spots, the development of a nature education park would be a welcome step.

The proposed park is being developed by the local civic body along Randarda lake on the outskirts of the city. Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) wants to develop Vivekananda nature education park as a destination for amusement and generating awareness about nature.

RMC officials said the park will be developed on seven hectares of rocky area. "While lawns and seating arrangements will be developed on three hectares, there will be plantation of various trees in the remaining area. This is actually a waste land of RMC located in close proximity to Randarda and Lalpari lakes," said RMC commissioner Ajay Bhadoo.

He said the RMC will use the natural landscape while designing the park. "It will have path ways, resting sites along with an amphitheatre among other facilities. The park will be for kids, youth and old alike,'' Bhadoo said.

RMC officials said that the civic body will spend Rs 1 crore on developing the facility while another Rs 50 lakh would be spent on the civil construction works. The entire project will be completed within one year.

"Forest department will carry out the plantation activity. Keeping in mind the aim of providing nature education to children, various types of plants including bamboo, cactus, bonsai along with others will be grown in the park. The water for developing the park will be taken from Randarda lake using drip irrigation technique," said an RMC official.

"Once ready, it will be another green patch for the city and a space to spend time amidst nature. Moreover, the location is close to Pradhyuman Park zoo. Those visiting the zoo will visit the park as well,'' said Dr Jaiman Upadhyay, chairman, standing committee, RMC.

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) will start to run AC buses on Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor from Monday. RMC will not charge fee from commuters for the next three months.

RMC officials said that high floor luxury buses would be deployed for commuters on the 10.7 km pilot project of BRTS from Gondal Road chowkdi to Jamnagar Road chowkdi on 150-feet Ring Road. The BRTS project is being carried out under Central Government sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), in the city.
"The RMC has given a contract to an operator who will operate and maintain the AC buses. RMC would not purchase the buses. RMC would pay Rs 47 per km to the bus operator'' said an RMC official.

"Our idea is to provide more frequencies of buses along BRTS corridor. Commuters will get bus from every five minutes from the BRTS bus stops'' said RMC official.

"In order to popularize the BRTS services, we would invite various association members, women groups, school children among others to have free ride on AC buses on BRTS'' said source.

According to RMC officials, total 19 bus stops on BRTS rout on Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis are being developed.

This is the pilot project of BRTS in the city and the entire project will be implemented in three corridors - blue, green and red - in a phased manner and would cover 104.86sq km area in the city. The total length of BRTS project, when implemented entirely, would be 63.50 km.

Gujarat is developing fast without taxing people much. The nation can progress if made free of corruption.

GHB Chairman Jayantibhai Barot said that the board has decided to go 13-storey flats as part of paradigm shift, looking to the needs of the time, to build more flats on same plot at affordable price. GHB is building 1,092 units at Vadodara, 630 units at Surat and 416 units at Ahmedabad.Prominent among those present on the occasion included Urban Development Minister Nitin Patel, Agriculture Minster Dilip Sanghani, BJP State President R.C. Buses on BRTS in Rajkot gets overwhelming response (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-10-20/rajkot/34605679_1_brts-from-gondal-road-10486sq-brts-corridor)

The buses on Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) on 150 foot Ring Road in city have received overwhelming response. Rajkot Municipal Corporation has started running semi- high floor AC buses on BRTS corridor from October 1 in city. RMC is not charging any fees from commuters in buses on BRTS corridor and free service will be for three months.

The semi-high floor luxury buses have been on the 10.7 km pilot project of BRTS from Gondal Road chowkdi to Jamnagar Road chowkdi on 150-feet Ring Road. The BRTS project is being carried out under Central Government sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), in the city.

RMC has given the contract to run buses on BRTS corridor to Rajsthan based firm bus which will operate and maintain the AC buses. RMC has not purchased the buses.

According to RMC officials, as of now, there are two AC buses are running on BRTS corridor and three more buses will be added from 22 October.

"Buses on BRTS received overwhelming response since the begnning. On an average, 2800 commuters use buses on BRTS corridor daily in city and we are hopeful that the number of commuters will increase in coming days'' said RMC official.

"Our idea is to provide more frequencies of buses along BRTS corridor. In the first phase, we plan to run 11 buses. Commuters will get bus from every five minutes from the BRTS bus stops'' said RMC official.

The entire BRTS project will be implemented in three corridors - blue, green and red - in a phased manner and would cover 104.86sq km area in the city. The total length of BRTS project, when implemented entirely, would be 63.50 km.

Nice pics VnKotak, cant honestly say much looks different to when I last went through Rajkot a few years ago (albeit very briefly), but still, always good to see some of the less photographed places

Rajkot Racecourse Redevelopment
100acres, Central Rajkot link (http://www.hcp.co.in/project-details/61/69/257/race-course-development-project-)

Race Course, though originally developed as an arena for horse races, has evolved over many decades into a collage of disparate campuses providing space for sports activities, a science centre, an energy park, an art gallery, a library, gardens, amusement rides, exhibitions and periodic lokmelas. Though this area continues to be quite popular in parts, its full potential is untapped.

In this regard, Race Course Area Redevelopment Project is a significant step taken by the city towards the transformation of this place into an integrated, enhanced and unified ‘Race Course’. This project aims to address the entire 100 acre of Race Course site for master planning and design guidelines. While the proposed master plan focuses on the redevelopment of Race Course and consolidating the assorted programs, the design guidelines aim towards establishing a network of open spaces including streets and greenways in the vicinity.

Extensive site analyses have been carried out to assist in formulating apt strategies for the various aspects of the master plan. The design process also greatly benefited from public consultation, design workshops and the participation of experts and key personnel from the local municipal corporation.

The master plan aims at creating an enhanced park environment by consolidating the open spaces, increasing the green cover, creating an extensive pedestrian network, upgrading the existing facilities and providing an array of special features to anchor the main nodes. The design proposes a comprehensive vision that can guide the development of the Race Course over time and make it a world-class urban park for the city of Rajkot with its own unique identity.

CM to dedicate 1.12 km long Vivekananda over bridge in Rajkot (http://deshgujarat.com/2013/03/07/cm-to-dedicate-1-12-km-long-vivekananda-over-bridge-in-rajkot/)

Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi will dedicate a new triangle over bridge on Gondal-Mavdi road. The bridge has been named as ‘Swami Vivekananda over bridge’. It has been constructed by Rajkot Municipal Corporation.

Construction of this bridge began in 2008. Due to lack of permissions from Railway the construction work took four years instead of two.

Rs 58.44 crore bridge is 1129.81 meter long and 16.50 meter wide. It has total 37 spans..

First-of-its-kind in Saurashtra region, the triangular overbridge conceptualised under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission will ease traffic chaos on the busy Gondal Road.

Commuters using Gondal Road are held up for long durations due to railway crossing. The flyover will also connect Mavdi Road, where another railway crossing is situated. The project was sanctioned in view of level crossings on broad gauge Rajkot-Veraval railway line along Gondal Road and Mavdi Road as part of city development plan.

Of the total project cost, 50 per cent is grant from Government of India while 30 and 20 per cents contributions are by the state government and RMC.

I hope there is some kind of roundabout that has maybe been cut out of the shot, otherwise this seems like a crazy and dangerous design for a flyover.

Two new JNNURM projects for Rajkot (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/rajkot/Two-new-JNNURM-projects-for-Rajkot/articleshow/19716519.cms)

Two new projects on solid waste management and improving water supply have been sanctioned for Rajkot under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the flagship programme of central government.

These projects are for improving solid waste management and water supply in the city.

"A sum of Rs 73.65 crore has been sanctioned for the water supply project and Rs 41.65 crore for the solid waste management project," a Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) official said.

RMC commissioner Ajay Bhadoo had presented the detailed project reports for approval at a meeting held in Delhi on Tuesday.

Officials said RMC would strengthen its water supply network by setting up a 50 million litres per day (MLD) capacity water filter plant in Bedi village and laying water pipelines from Anandpur village to Bedi.

"The RMC will also construct overhead and underground water storage tanks in the city,'' an RMC official said.

Under the Solid waste Management project, RMC would strengthen its door to door collection of solid waste and it would purchase various modern equipments to handle and transport the solid waste from different parts of the city.
