I lived in Nagoya for about 4 months - not very long, but enough time to get to know the city and its people. I must say I love it, though it's said that comparing to Tokyo or Osaka there's nothing interesting to do in Nagoya, but I disagree. I like the city, its atmosphere and its people :) Sorry for the bad quality. Due in 2013. Is that on 広小路通? near the hilton? if so that means a great Showa themed restaurant is going to get knocked down. But I like what's happening in that area! asahi January 17th, 2008, 04:53 PM Sorry to say, but I don't like it at all. Dunno why, just don't. They could've designed sth way better than that. But you guys like it, so it's just the matter of taste I guess... Blackraven January 17th, 2008, 06:08 PM Well, I do like the exterior design of the office tower (especially the mid-section). As for the residential tower, there goes you're typical boxy Japanese architecture once again. Oh well. As long as they make up for it with super-modern interior then perhaps the flaws can somewhat be minimized. sumisu January 17th, 2008, 06:43 PM If it's in the location I think it's in it will be displacing a lot of seedy businesses. The area has great restaurants and it used to be the busiest area in the city (until the americans took over the area after the war for a base). It's not an amazing building, but it's not horrible. Among otakus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku) like me, however, it is also famous as the location where the game (later anime) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) took place. From now, I'll be talking some nonsensical otaku-lingo for a few pics, so ignore them if you are a sane normal person. Now this is the Furude Shrine (http://www.orientalarchitecture.com/japan/shiragawa/shirakawa_hachiman.php). As you can see, the shrine was preparing for the Watanagashi Festival (http://shirakawa-go.org/english/e_kyoudo.html). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3514/4042804668_765fea34ce_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3514/4042804668_765fea34ce_b.jpg) The timetable of the festival... when will Rika dance? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2641/4042812252_14d12e435c_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2641/4042812252_14d12e435c_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2446/4042804844_61f96feffe_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2446/4042804844_61f96feffe_b.jpg) You see a wodden board on the right. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2445/4042805022_58095b2e89_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2445/4042805022_58095b2e89_b.jpg) Okay, it's an ema (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ema_%28Shinto%29) (Shinto prayer card) hanger. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2663/4042060709_bfdcc2c026_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2663/4042060709_bfdcc2c026_b.jpg) But, wait... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3485/4042805474_d8440195b9_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3485/4042805474_d8440195b9_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2474/4042805636_ce7dc64781_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2474/4042805636_ce7dc64781_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2517/4042060835_5f522dd968_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2517/4042060835_5f522dd968_b.jpg) Looks like this shrine now converted from Shinto to Otakuism. I mean Shirakawago, I took a bus to Gokayama. (This photo is not by me.) http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6678/res709.jpg Gokayama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gokayama) is a village next to Shirakawago. Administrativley, it's a part of Nanto City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanto,_Toyama), Toyama Prefecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyama_Prefecture), Hokuriku region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokuriku_region), while the village of Shirakawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirakawa,_Gifu_%28village%29) belongs to Gifu Prefecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gifu_Prefecture), Tokai region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C5%8Dkai_region). In reality, though, Shirakawa has more economic/cultural ties with Toyama than with central Gifu (or even Takayama). Gokayama also preserves gassho-zukuri houses. There are actually five settlements (hence go (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E4%BA%94#Japanese)), and I visited Ainokura, the largest among them. Ainokura, however, is still much smaller than Shirakawago, which itself is fairy small. Ainokura preserves 20 or so traditional houses. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2699/4042067807_0fb9a20beb_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2699/4042067807_0fb9a20beb_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2624/4042068197_f22c7ec2ef_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2624/4042068197_f22c7ec2ef_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2516/4042812888_883ff3dba3_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2516/4042812888_baa4d3eb73_o.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2435/4042813080_7557735c45_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2435/4042813080_7557735c45_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2518/4042813246_bed87b97be_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2518/4042813246_bed87b97be_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2701/4042069631_2d0a2df7af_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2701/4042069631_2d0a2df7af_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2612/4042813472_81822fbd5e_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2612/4042813472_81822fbd5e_b.jpg) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/4042069101_867d62953f_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/4042069101_867d62953f_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2617/4042813954_294d976209_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2617/4042813954_294d976209_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2555/4042069847_99ca58b52e_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2555/4042069847_99ca58b52e_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2719/4042070063_1b9611ff49_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2719/4042070063_1b9611ff49_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2464/4042070275_7199b44c0e_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2464/4042070275_7199b44c0e_b.jpg) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2532/4042814946_3e4790296a_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2532/4042814946_3e4790296a_b.jpg) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3500/4042815614_04033c0154_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3500/4042815614_04033c0154_b.jpg) Feels like in the world of Japanese folklores. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3536/4042815850_a29dd397db_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3536/4042815850_a29dd397db_b.jpg) From Gokayama, I again got on a bus... the last bus of the day. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2422/4042816356_53edecfa1e_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2422/4042816356_53edecfa1e_b.jpg) 30 minutes trip by bus took me to Johana, a small town in southern Toyama Prefecture. The town calls herself "the little Kyoto of Etchu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etch%C5%AB_Province) (Toyama)", but is much less famous than Takayama/Furukawa. The onsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onsen) (hot springs) is nowadays losing its popularity against the rivals such as Wakura Onsen. This place, however, is known for the ryokan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryokan_%28Japanese_inn%29) (Japanese hotel) called Hoshi. Hoshi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoshi_Ryokan), opened in 718, is the oldest hotel in the world still operating. It is also the oldest continuously operated company in the world still surviving. (It was the second oldest until Kongo-gumi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kong%C5%8D_Gumi), founded in 578, was sold in 2006.) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2598/4042820844_8fb376e027_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2598/4042820844_8fb376e027_b.jpg) Onsen Supermarket. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3529/4042820984_c387cf31bc_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3529/4042820984_c387cf31bc_b.jpg) Sushi and bicycle at the same time! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2552/4042821126_eee65461d4_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2552/4042821126_eee65461d4_b.jpg) Roughly 2 km from Awazu Onsen, or 40 minutes on my foot, is the Motorcar Museum of Japan (http://www.hot-ishikawa.jp/f-lang/english/kaga-hakusan-area/muse-detail.html). The museum, founded by a local millionaire, is relatively unknown compared with the official museums by Toyota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Automobile_Museum) or Honda. (http://world.honda.com/collection-hall/) However, it is this museum that houses the largest collection of cars in Japan. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2607/4042821222_74c7cb247a_d.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2607/4042821222_74c7cb247a_b.jpg) The building is not large enough for its huge collection, so 500 cars are very much crammed here. But boy, this place is the heaven for car enthusiasts! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3509/4042134363_d3ba808683_d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3509/4042134363_d105235d6b_o.jpg) The museum roughly groups Japanese cars by their makers, and foreign cars by countries. If successful, it could spread to the rest of Japan where the country's goal is to reduce emissions from 70-80% by 2050. Background on Toyama: Had one of the highest car use/car dependency rates in the nation Its now making the city more compact and improving mass transportation accessibility to reduce commute times. Down town is also being shifted to along these transportation corridors to help minimize movement.
