Let's collect pictures, projects and information about Japan's 3rd largest metropolis, Nagoya. It is said that around 1% of world industrial output comes from Nagoya metro area (8.7 million people according to www.gazetteer.de), with Toyota (world's 3rd biggest automaker) being the best known local company.
Overall Nagoya is a veeery underated and unknown city despite of being plenty of interesting projects, such as new scrapers (especially the 247m Toyota bldg), the new Central Japan International Airport built on a manmade island, new freeway rings, the 2005 Aichi world exhibition...

Cities over 100.000 people in Nagoya MA, spreading over the prefectures of Aichi, Gifu and Mie:

Nagoya 2.171.378
Gifu 402.748
Toyota 351.068
Okazaki 336.570
Yokkaichi 291.106
Kasugai 287.619
Ichinomiya 273.709
Suzuka 186.138
Anjoo 158.826
Oogaki 150.238
Komaki 143.117
Kariya 132.060
Kakamigah 131.990
Seto 131.650
Toyokawa 117.356
Handa 110.819
Kuwana 108.417
Tajimi 104.134
Nishio 100.804

Within Nagoya City there are some 170 km of rail lines:

76.5 km - Subway
41 km - JR Japan Railway (5 transfer stations to subway)
39 km - Meitetsu-Nagoya Railroad - a private suburban rail service, partly shared service on Tsurumai Subway Line
8.5 km - Kinetsu-Kinki Nippon Railway (suburban)
5 km - Tokai Kotsu Jigyo line

hey,

I'm from nagoya... Well, I was born and raised there. Now I'm finishing up on my university study here in London. My dad's Japanese (Kyoto) and my mom is Italian :-)

here are some pics i took of my beautiful Nagoya:

another building to be built in the area:

http://www.kawatu.co.jp/nagoya/jpgbox2/usizima2.gif
http://www.kawatu.co.jp/nagoya/jpgbox2/usizima6.gif

the toyota-mainchi building due 2007 is also near the JR central towers.

they are also planning on rebuilding the "dai-nagoya building" infront of the JR towers by 2010. Rumours suggest a 250m class skyscaper.

In fact, Nagoya is by far the wealthiest city in Japan.
Nagoya has the busiest port in Japan (by far the bigger than Kobe or Yokohama), and its industrial output is always No1 in Japan (twice as big as Osaka).

Sakae is the district full of large department stores. A more interesting place to visit is oosu, a shitamachi style commercial area full of hiphop types, electronics stores as well as older traditional shops.

I spent two nights last week in Nagoya with a friend and it's very unique from other Japanese cities. Nagoya isn't quite as haphazardly planned, and it is VERY clean compared to Tokyo and Osaka. In fact, it's as clean as Kobe and Yokohama if not cleaner, and there's a strong upper middle class there. Nagoya also has very wide roads compared to other Japanese cities and a high rate of automobile usage, almost as high as some US cities believe it or not. There were also quite a lot of foreigners in Nagoya percentage-wise compared to Tokyo and Osaka, probably because of the expo, but who knows. I love Nagoya! I think it could replace Osaka as Japan's second city in the future... and Aichi is the second largest area of flat land in Japan, bigger than Kansai, which is about 95% fully developed. Aichi I think is only 30% developed if even that, and still manages close to 11 million people.

IS AICHI NOW ON FOREIGNERS' MAP?
Chubu economy's future seen bright with boost from expo

By JUSTINE BORNSTEIN
Regional correspondent

NAGOYA -- As Nagoya's big coming-out party winds down, thoughts turn inevitably to what's next. The issue of how the prefecture can capitalize on the Aichi Expo is on everyone's mind.
Unlike the expo held in Tsukuba, Ibaraki prefecture, in 1985 that was intended to kick-start the city's flagging growth, Nagoya was already in great shape.

Known for its "monzukuri bunka," or "culture of making things," Aichi Prefecture has profited enormously from its niche in high-end manufacturing, particularly in the automotive and aerospace sectors, and the strong research and development and wide-ranging supporting industries that are integral to such success.

The economy has performed well for years. The industrial production index of the region is 120, having risen 13 percent since 2000, compared to the national average of 101. Consumer spending in Aichi was up more than 7 percent in July, well above the national average of 1.2 percent, and the job to applicant ratio is 1.4 to 1.7 in Aichi alone, higher than the 0.97 national figure.

The goal of the expo was in part to help recast in a more favorable light the prefecture's image in the minds of Japanese and to put Aichi on the map in the eyes of the foreign business community.

The awareness of what this region has to offer to business decision-makers has definitely improved. Stephen Anderson, commercial officer at the U.S. Consulate in Nagoya, said: "(Nagoya) has now established itself as a stop in international, global business. Because business leaders came here, people are more conscious of it."

Thanks also to the array of infrastructure built for the expo, the prefecture has established itself as a vital transit and cargo hub.

The new Centrair airport is expected to generate economic effects worth about 130 billion yen between fiscal 2006 and 2010, according to the Chubu Economic Federation (Chukeiren).

"The infrastructure laid down will be a big change," Expo Association Secretary General Toshio Nakamura said, "especially the added convenience (of the airport). Currently, 60 percent of cargo goes through Narita and Kansai, but Nagoya's share will increase as it attracts more cargo business."

The inevitable downturn that comes after such a big event is looking minimal as well, for two reasons. One is the better than anticipated attendance figures, which means any debts accrued to stage the expo will be offset by increased revenues.

Anderson noted that "the bounce that they are going to get will help them avoid the debt period. Practically, there will be profits." The prefectural government has forecast that the aftereffects of the expo and the new airport should generate 2.2 trillion yen in revenue from 2005 to 2010.

The second big cause is the relocation from Tokyo of Toyota's head offices, starting in 2007. Figures bandied about range from 2,000 to 7,000 people, depending on the source, but the move will likely have a synergistic effect on the economy.

"There will be a multiplier effect when Toyota moves its headquarters to Nagoya," Nakamura said. "Other companies will also come. For example, Mori Seiki (a machine tools maker) will relocate its head office from Fukui to Nagoya."

Already, a mini-construction boom is happening near Nagoya Station, as a number of high-rise buildings are being erected.

Most prominent is Midland Square, future home of Toyota's headquarters and known informally to Nagoya residents as "the Toyota Building," which is slated to be even taller than Nagoya's twin tower landmark, the 51-story JR Central Towers.

Nearby will be the Lucent Building and the Mitsui Building, due to come on stream in 2008. Another site near the station, currently home to the expo satellite De La Fantasia venue, will become Eco City Sasashima, an office and entertainment complex.

As the city's entertainment and business centers shift westward toward the main train station, Nagoya is experiencing its own little property bubble; NHK recently reported that rents in the Nagoya Station area, including the landmark but somewhat dilapidated Dai Nagoya Building, are up more than 30 percent over a one-year period.

In the longer term, the completion of the Second Tomei Expressway, and the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway will see an integration of regional economies, from the western Kanto through the Hokuriku regions, with Nagoya as the focal point. "There will be improved distribution and logistic links," Nakamura said. "Just one more tunnel needs to be completed on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway and then the Hokuriku region will be seen, instead of as part of Kansai, as a part of the Tokai economic area."

While it may be the center of the regional economy, can Nagoya reposition itself as Japan's de facto second city? Anderson thinks not, suggesting that it will function as a specialized niche in a variety of high-tech industries: autos, aerospace, information technology and chemicals.

"(The economy) won't bring the Ark Hills or Roppongi Hills financial people down here, but it will bring the engineers, the designers and the project managers," he said.

In a sense, the expo can be seen as a catalyst for all this change.

"The whole expo event will be the start of things," Nakamura said. "The experience and knowhow that comes from having staged such an event, plus the change in people's perspective, will bear fruit in many areas. It's hard to say what would have happened in 10 to 20 years without this event."

Ahh Nagoya 懐かしい:happy: It's great to see these tall buildings going up around Nagoya station. That area is really coming alive now. I'm looking forward to seeing the Mitsui building take shape! I heard that the "landmark but somewhat dilapidated Dai Nagoya Building" will be making way for another tall one in the future. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Penis Festival in Nagoya

http://www.yamasa.org/japan/english/destinations/aichi/tagata_jinja.html

The Hounen festival at Tagata shrine is one of the most famous (or infamous?) festivals in Japan. Every year on March 15 a huge two and a half meter wooden phallus is carried the short distance between two shrines attracting visitors from all over Japan and international media attention. The festival is fun with a lot of sake drinking; however the background of the festival is rather more serious.

Hounen means bountiful year and like many cultures, Japan had numerous fertility rituals appealing to gods or spirits for a good harvest. Spring is the time of regeneration where seeds sprout and dormant trees and plants that seem to be dead come back to life.

The Hounen festival pays veneration to a female deity, Tamahime-no-mikoto, embodying agricultural fertility. Every year at the height of winter a new phallus is made from a single Japanese cypress tree and carved according to strict ritual. According to Shinto traditions newly made objects posses vitality. The phallus is a gift to the deity, which accompanies her visiting husband once a year.

Originally the phallus was much smaller and attached to a straw effigy. However this was considered a bit too risque even for a fertility ritual, so the effigy was discarded and the phallus was paraded by itself in a small portable shrine. Over time the phallus slowly increased in length from less than a meter to well over two meters. The total weight of the phallus and shrine is now 400kg (nearly 900 pounds) and this year was over two and a half meters long.

The parade is lead by a priest throwing salt to purify the path of the shrine. Next are several men carrying banners, and the last banner has a rather graphic picture which could most delicately be described as being rather anatomic in nature. Following are local dignitaries wearing golden sashes reminiscent of Buddhist priests. Then come several young ladies in purple robes carrying 60cm wooden phalli. Next are a number of Shinto priests led by one dressed as the deity Sarutahiko-no-okami, distinctive with red face, large nose and unruly hair.

The most popular part of the parade follows next: a cart decorated with trees and, most importantly, a vat of sake which is distributed in wax paper cups by volunteers. Then come the two portable shrines. The first of the shrines is a statue of the deity Takeinadene-no-mikoto, the visiting husband of the agricultural deity. Last is the phallus carried by 12 men, all aged 42. This age is considered unlucky and so requires spiritual intervention. Carrying the gift to the agricultural deity is hoped to bring special blessings for that inauspicious age.

Once the phallus arrives at the shrine it is enshrined in the Shinmei shrine for the next year. The old phallus is sold to local businesses or private homes. It is perhaps an unsettling thought that these phalli are all over the neighborhood.

This festival, like most festivals in Japan, is treated in a lighthearted way, with much sake and noisy behavior. However, it is obvious that people do take it seriously, solemnly approaching the permanent shrines and praying in silence. As modern society grew less dependent on the vagaries of seasons and harvests the importance of agriculture traditions has faded. Even so young couples still come to the shrine throughout the year hoping to be blessed with healthy children.

Getting there is fairly simple. The tickets are 710 yen each way. From Shin Nagoya station (next to JR Nagoya Station) catch the Meitetsu Inuyama line to Inuyama station. Inuyama is about 30 minutes from Nagoya and is a major station and the first with several platforms.

At Inuyama station change to the Komaki line (platform 3) and catch any train traveling back in the same direction you arrived, south. Get off at the third station, Tagata Jinja Mae, and you will have no problems finding the shrine. Walk to the west and turn to the left (south) down the main road or just follow the others.

The main parade usually starts at 2pm although there it is worth getting there a little bit early to look around first. There are plenty of yatai (small temporary foodstalls often seen at festivals) selling typical festival foods such as karaage (fried chicken pieces) and yakitori (grilled chicken on a stick), takoyaki (small prices of octopus grilled in batter), french fries and drinks. You can pick up some interesting souvenirs such as some penis shaped candy to suck on while you make your way home?

I lived Motoyama and in gifu Mizunmai shi anybody know it?

I hope to live there one day maybe?

Is it really Japan's most wealthy city? its hard to believe it? more tha Tokyo? how? iknow the people ar emeant ot be the most wealthiest but how is the city more than Tokyo? because of Toyota?

Since you mention the word "gakuen", does this mean that this building would be a school (or an educational facility?)

Gakuen = school or academy (for either primary or secondary levels).
Elementary/grade school and high school come into mind. Not sure though about "junior high school" or any educational level in-between the two.

Fresh news from beloved Nagoya:
In march Midland Square will at last be opened to the public. As I guessed, it will feature luxury French brand stores, but also a Michelin 3 stars French restaurant at 41st floor.
As for Mitsui's turning 170m tower, it is due to be finished by next december...I got pictures coming up!
From the highway I noticed a new tower almost completed not far from Nagoyajo business square. l would say it's 150m high. I'll try to take pictures!

yea I hope the Dai-Nagoya gets rebuilt, it'll piss of the station people more though... they were already angry that Midland was going to wreck their view.

if they re-do the Dai-Nagoya biru that means another priceless beer-garden will fall to 'progress'

Wow when was this picture taken? There isn't the Coca Cola globe on the top of the building!!
Anyway, that's good news it's going to be rebuilt, because I once went into this old creepy thing, it was like going 30 years back in time. But it is a symbol though. The symbol of this area developping several decades ago (there is a bank next to Midland Square where you can see aerial pictures taken in the 60's and 70's  ).

It seems like Chubu Centrair International Airport is Japan's most modern and aesthetic airport (well Osaka-Kansai looks more impressive...but this one is prettier).

I've never been to Centrair myself but some of my friends tell me that it's quite busy at times. Don't you think it needs an expansion considering that it has replaced Narita International Airport as the preferred stop-over/transit hub for South-east Asian air-passengers connecting to U.S. cities? :?

Too many pictures! This thread becomes unreadable!!! There is no point is posting 50 times the same picture just because one is leaning on the left, the other on the right...

Interesting indeed.

Question though:

Does the Oasis 21 shopping center/leisure complex have something to protect it from rainwater? Cause from the looks of it, it looks like that portion is open-air.

Just wondering if it has something to cover all the rainwater from wetting/watering the "expensive carpet".

EDIT:

I mean....judging from the pic above, there appear to be some small portions that the overhead glass roof cannot cover (during the possible event of rainfall).

Is the glass roof/overhead structure BIG enough to protect the entire floor below it from being drenched during heavy rains?

If not, then the floor below it is gonna get all wet and mind you or anyone else that those are expensive carpets (not tiles, or concrete or cement) but blue/purple fabrics used right there.

Another EDIT:

OMFG!!!Is this area covered with the overhead glass roof?

There's expensive carpet below it. So unless the Oasis 21 has lots of money to spend or if they did put a roof/overhead structure to protect the area below from rainwater, then they're gonna be in quite a mess just to clean and dry the area and most especially the carpets (since these are expensive to maintain and become even more of a headache when exposed to water).

double deck lifts are not uncommon these days, but this is the first see-through double deck lift in the world.

It's not carpet, it's stuff like a shower mat at a local pool's changeroom shower. it's hight tech, drains the water away real nice.

So it's some kind of water-absorbent material??? Interesting.

However, as I look through the pics again, some parts are stil left exposed to the outdoors and these are parts that are not suseptible to water/snow (such as the escalators).

Of course, maybe I shouldn't think that the architects, engineers, builders and the safety planners who constructed the OASIS 21 facility failed to see the event of rain or snow falling down on it. I assume that they did (considering that it needs to pass Japan's "TOUGH" construction standards which includes something as heavy as earthquake-readiness to something as simple as rain or snowfall).....but even so...

Perhaps a few more explanations can help the uninformed (such as myself).

Kanazawa is the place where there are tradition, a lot of buildings from old times.
Nevertheless a budget, a mountain became the neck, and the Sinkansen did not go.
However, because the Hokuriku Sinkansen will go in the future, I seem to become an important city. (During construction, 65% are completed now)I penetrated Hida Tunnel.

Because I am tasteful, and there is a town from old times with characteristic tradition of Kanazawa, there are many tourists and visits it.
I considerably lay emphasis on green, a scene, art, a folkcraft, the welfare, a child, a への action.
There is a port, too, and a foreign ship enters port, too.

So that that there is the quiet row of houses along a city street which water flows through in immediate back of busy streets is not believed.

WoW. A woman in the picture was just sits down on a full of water pool?
How dose she do that ? It seems as if she enters into a empty of big fish glass cace, and the sunset just shines into the room.

I've been there once not for visitor and actually didn't know about Kanazawa a lot, so now I want to go again.:)
Thanks for many informative picutres.

According to Aichi city the board of education, there's a new foundation of a strong relationship between Japanese and dog at Yoshigokaizuka, an ancient grave in Aichi prefecture. The grave was made at Joumon era, around 4 thouthands years ago. They found a dog was displayed and buried together with a Joumon child in order. This static shows how wonderful people share a life with their pets and also respect their lives as human from long time ago.
