Conde Nast Building
New York, USA

HEIGHT: 247m/809 feet
FLOORS: 48 floors
COMPLETION: 1999
ARCHITECT: Fox & Fowle Architects

was built in 1997-1999 for the Condé Nast publishing company.
The 47-storey facade of the building consists of typically Deconstructivist varying elements. The lower portions of the south and east facades are clad in granite and form a traditionally-inclined grid of windows, with a "core" of glass curtain-wall exposed from the sides and top. The rectangular plan form of both the base and the set-back tower is broken by a rounded corner at Broadway and 42nd Street. The corner facing Times Square is emphasised by a round turret at the base level, housing the curved, 1,100 m² NASDAQ ticker and video screen. The screen is holed at intervals to let natural light into the interior behind the screen.

The top of the building resembles a powerhouse with its curving, horizontally-banded corners, and has four protruding frameworks, one on every facade, for later-assembled electric signs of 16 times 16 meters. Solar panels incorporated into the facade generate idle-time power for the building. From the middle, an antenna tower rises to the height of 217 meters.

The new, prominent gate to the renewed Times Square and 42nd Street received its first tenants in June 1999. It had already gained fame also outside its stylistic importance: In July 1998 a portion of the scaffolding collapsed, forcing the closing and evacuation of all the nearby blocks from Fifth to Eighth Avenue (about 600 residents and workers in all) for several days.

For a construction cost of $500 million, the building houses 149,000 m² of rentable space as well as extensive communications cablings. Within the glass-walled base of the round turret video screen, the street-level NASDAQ MarketSite TV studio features a 14 m long and 5 m high curved wall of video screens for stock market data broadcasts.

The building is also notable for its new economical and ecological features. The energy-conscious installations within the building are expected to provide 10-15% savings in operational costs as compared to the conventionally built and equipped high-rises.

9...oh, what the hell, 9.5.

The best contemporary high rise in New York, IMO. And look at that first picture. Look at the illusion the protuding part of the facade gives. Looks like someone at Fox & Fowle really likes MC Escher. Just wonderful.

A very innovative design with a good mixture of forms and materials.

I love robotic tops on talls.

6/10 - Gets out of the modernist box and soars fairly well. But while I like its individual parts, especially the curving glass curtain wall, it's visually not well organized, and almost looks like it was pasted together, so it's hard for me to wrap my eyes around it, to get an overall impression. And shouldn't all those signs on top have something on them?

5.5! Really solid building (my scale reserves only the best of the best getting 8+, considering we're rating the 100 tallest, some have to be the worst, some have to be better)

Anyway, back to my review.

I like this in pieces. Some of the elements don't seem to mesh, which may be what they are going for: cut 'n' paste skyscraper???

Anyway, it looks like a Shogun Warrior robot, which is cool in my book, but considering this is in NYC, it's just sort of a "striver."

What can I say? I love it.

I gave it an 8.5 which probably gives it the highest status (in my mind, anyways) of nearly any modern building in New York City.

I love this building. It's almost schizophrenic.
There appears to be so many different designs
all in one building. This tower certainly adds a
whole new spicy flavor to the NY skyline. Fits
in perfectly in chaotic, crowded Times Square.

To me, this building is another that just is business in New York. It really reminds me of the skyscraper in the third level of Max Payne. (damn that was a great game and I'm not even a gamer)

This is my favorite skyscraper in the whole world, it has an amazing design. I love the way it has so many different facades. It has a shint more vibrant glass facade on the the times square side and a duller more business- like side on 6th ave. The best new skyscraper to come out of NYC. This building is only going to get better when the new antenna is done and when the light of the billboards at the top. AMAZING!!!!:guns1:  :) 10/10

This building finally shattered the standard mold of post war Manhattan corporate towers and spit on the likes of David Childs-forcing him and his ilk to start thinking "outside the box" so to speak! Its' influence will continue to resonate and encourage architects to think boldly in NYC. For that alone it deserves a standing ovation.

It is a bit too squat for me though this is not really the designers fault. They did quite a commendable job considering all the various restraints placed upon them. They took chances and IMO have put in place the icon of Times Square for now and long into the future. Along with numerous video walls at the base the screens at top are designed and zoned to be fitted with video and/or neon if called for in the future.

And of course this was the first "green" (environmentally sustainable designed) office tower built in NYC and I believe in the USA.

Love this building. 4 sides, 4 completley different facades. The glassier sides are aimed at Times Sq and the granite and more classic sides aimed at 42 st and the business world. and now they've added an antenna at the top that rises to 1100 ft. not bad at all. i see this changeling design copied all over the place but this one is still the best.

8.5/10 - I'm split here... I love it from the ground.. and it looks great from the ESB.. but from certain angles it almost makes me want to cry...

it need either about another 100m ( make it happen Trump ) or a modern Chrysler Building like top..

Sometimes it looks cool in context with the city, but on it's own it's a bit silly. Some bonus points for being the most recognizable building in NYC when standing right next to it and not looking up, thanks to the NASDAQ ticker. 5.0

Why -.5 for location? What's wrong with the location?

It's in between all of the other buildings and it's difficult to appreciate the full beauty of the structure because they kinda block it.

Edit: In other words, "it gets lost in the jungle" like someone said.

This is rate our talls, not rate the photo. You should give points to just the building itself, not for things beyond its control.

I don't see how you can subtract points from a building because of it's neighbors. It's like saying that Miss Universe should only win because her family members must also be good looking too.

can´t you all see the building is just too small and has a desproportionated spire on top?

those kind of spires were not meant to be reaching the sky in new york

Well..number 1

IT'S A ANTENNA. NOT A SPIRE.

You should reserch things beforehand so you won't look retarded.

From wiki:
During 2002 and 2003, the existing radio antenna, built for Clear Channel Communications as a backup transmitter site for its four FM stations, was removed and replaced with a 300-foot (91 m) mast to support television and radio broadcasters who were displaced by the destruction of the World Trade Center. Including the antenna, its height is 1,143 ft (348 m), making it the second tallest structure in the New York City, behind the Empire State Building.

Number 2

Disliking the name is kinda dumb considering Conde Nast is a worldwide magazine publishing company. You've probably read some of their magazines:

Allure
Details
GQ
Glamour
Jane
Lucky
Men's Vogue
Self
Teen Vogue
Vogue
W

To name a few.

This is not a great building but it is a very good one. it is cheery and light and confounds the conservatism many would seek to impose in that area.

it is tall enough. it is unafraid and it deserves an 8. One of the best NY talls in the recent years.

I like this in pieces. Some of the elements don't seem to mesh, which may be what they are going for: cut 'n' paste skyscraper???

Anyway, it looks like a Shogun Warrior robot, which is cool in my book, but considering this is in NYC, it's just sort of a "striver."
