View Full Version : #135 l Conde Nast Building l NEW YORK l 247m l 48fl
RafflesCity November 5th, 2002, 01:21 AM Conde Nast Building
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 247m/809 feet
FLOORS: 48 floors
COMPLETION: 1999
ARCHITECT: Fox & Fowle Architects
was built in 1997-1999 for the Condé Nast publishing company.
The 47-storey facade of the building consists of typically Deconstructivist varying elements. The lower portions of the south and east facades are clad in granite and form a traditionally-inclined grid of windows, with a "core" of glass curtain-wall exposed from the sides and top. The rectangular plan form of both the base and the set-back tower is broken by a rounded corner at Broadway and 42nd Street. The corner facing Times Square is emphasised by a round turret at the base level, housing the curved, 1,100 m² NASDAQ ticker and video screen. The screen is holed at intervals to let natural light into the interior behind the screen.
The top of the building resembles a powerhouse with its curving, horizontally-banded corners, and has four protruding frameworks, one on every facade, for later-assembled electric signs of 16 times 16 meters. Solar panels incorporated into the facade generate idle-time power for the building. From the middle, an antenna tower rises to the height of 217 meters.
The new, prominent gate to the renewed Times Square and 42nd Street received its first tenants in June 1999. It had already gained fame also outside its stylistic importance: In July 1998 a portion of the scaffolding collapsed, forcing the closing and evacuation of all the nearby blocks from Fifth to Eighth Avenue (about 600 residents and workers in all) for several days.
For a construction cost of $500 million, the building houses 149,000 m² of rentable space as well as extensive communications cablings. Within the glass-walled base of the round turret video screen, the street-level NASDAQ MarketSite TV studio features a 14 m long and 5 m high curved wall of video screens for stock market data broadcasts.
The building is also notable for its new economical and ecological features. The energy-conscious installations within the building are expected to provide 10-15% savings in operational costs as compared to the conventionally built and equipped high-rises.

SteelCity32 November 5th, 2002, 02:18 AM Looks good, and I like it. 8/10
Caledon1981 November 5th, 2002, 02:33 AM crazy design and gets "lost in the jungle" . .but i think its a goodie. . 7/10
Steven November 5th, 2002, 06:13 AM Its ok
7.5/10
250gto November 5th, 2002, 08:18 AM 9...oh, what the hell, 9.5.
The best contemporary high rise in New York, IMO. And look at that first picture. Look at the illusion the protuding part of the facade gives. Looks like someone at Fox & Fowle really likes MC Escher. Just wonderful.
Bobdreamz November 5th, 2002, 08:25 AM the top is horrible..it looks robotic..very cheesy....
6/10
MrTall November 5th, 2002, 08:37 AM Magic. 9.25.....maybe 9.5!
Looks even better in real life.
DamienK November 5th, 2002, 09:16 AM 8.5/10, but I will lower the score if that giant antenna planned gets put on top.
AG November 5th, 2002, 09:52 AM A crazy NYC Times Square Tower. The advertising adds some style to it, the shape isn't to plain either.
8/10
Muse November 5th, 2002, 03:30 PM A very innovative design with a good mixture of forms and materials.
I love robotic tops on talls.
The lobby seems starck.
9.5
Liz L November 5th, 2002, 06:35 PM 6/10 - Gets out of the modernist box and soars fairly well. But while I like its individual parts, especially the curving glass curtain wall, it's visually not well organized, and almost looks like it was pasted together, so it's hard for me to wrap my eyes around it, to get an overall impression. And shouldn't all those signs on top have something on them?
Sunflower November 6th, 2002, 12:30 AM Nice enough.
8/10
RafflesCity November 6th, 2002, 12:59 AM 6.5/10
Although its new, I find its design too incoherent to appreciate.
DrumCorpsAlum November 6th, 2002, 07:11 PM 8.5/10. Very cool!
scottythebody December 7th, 2002, 12:50 AM 5.5! Really solid building (my scale reserves only the best of the best getting 8+, considering we're rating the 100 tallest, some have to be the worst, some have to be better)
Anyway, back to my review.
I like this in pieces. Some of the elements don't seem to mesh, which may be what they are going for: cut 'n' paste skyscraper???
Anyway, it looks like a Shogun Warrior robot, which is cool in my book, but considering this is in NYC, it's just sort of a "striver."
SUNNI December 7th, 2002, 03:21 AM 9, i love its design. and i love its height..
Daniel8ty8 December 7th, 2002, 11:07 PM What can I say? I love it.
I gave it an 8.5 which probably gives it the highest status (in my mind, anyways) of nearly any modern building in New York City.
parody24 December 10th, 2002, 05:46 AM 9/10
I love this building. It's almost schizophrenic.
There appears to be so many different designs
all in one building. This tower certainly adds a
whole new spicy flavor to the NY skyline. Fits
in perfectly in chaotic, crowded Times Square.
cabasse December 10th, 2002, 11:20 AM To me, this building is another that just is business in New York. It really reminds me of the skyscraper in the third level of Max Payne. (damn that was a great game and I'm not even a gamer)

Rainier Meadows December 11th, 2002, 06:51 AM 4.5 - This tower shouldn't have been built......travesty to the historical works of art that reside in this great city!
TYW December 13th, 2002, 03:04 PM 6.5/10
nice building but i hate the top
CG5 December 14th, 2002, 06:52 AM This building takes the cake for me. This is the best thing to come out of skyscraper design since the days of Art Deco and New York Style setbacks. Bravo! Bravo!!!
10/10
The Messiah February 25th, 2003, 10:28 PM Original tower.Looks a bit hysterical in my eyes but my eyes like that a lot :)8.5/10
Oaronuviss February 26th, 2003, 06:00 AM IMO it's kinda... eww.

SteaPVU March 12th, 2003, 10:33 PM Ended of the 20th century with a "bang!" Pure urban theatre. 10/10
I like the hyper-industrial exhaust crown.
AtlanticaC5 March 14th, 2003, 10:18 PM Conde Nast is really cool! Is the big "4 Times Square"-sign at the top of the building just a sign or has it a function? :?
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 03:07 AM 4.5 Very busy and quite random
airsickpenthousedweller April 18th, 2003, 12:32 AM Looks industrial.

I love shiny buildings like this
TropicalSQ744 May 4th, 2003, 11:42 AM Pretty futuristic and modern design.. Good stuff i tink.. :) I like how the translucent glass shows the contents of the building...
9.5/10
rj2uman May 26th, 2003, 06:59 PM It COULD be cool. But it's not. 6/10
Imperfect Ending May 29th, 2003, 10:59 AM 9.5
What is that thing on top?
It should be a T.V. screen instead of that black thing
dnice215 June 20th, 2003, 05:43 AM This is my favorite skyscraper in the whole world, it has an amazing design. I love the way it has so many different facades. It has a shint more vibrant glass facade on the the times square side and a duller more business- like side on 6th ave. The best new skyscraper to come out of NYC. This building is only going to get better when the new antenna is done and when the light of the billboards at the top. AMAZING!!!!:guns1:  :) 10/10
Falcaonet June 21st, 2003, 04:51 PM It's really good looking. It has conservative and modern facades. It's one of the most varied buildings i've seen, in terms of facades. But it doesn't look it has 247 m.
I gave it an 8.

It's just a sign, as far as I know.
New Jack City July 5th, 2003, 07:06 AM 8.5/10...Conde Nast is very futuristic, unique, and interesting to look at. The design might be a bit too overdone, detailed or futuristic but it suits its location very good.
Hacksaw July 5th, 2003, 12:10 PM The top seems a little cluttered, but it's shiny... 7/10
enzo July 22nd, 2003, 01:16 AM 9/10
This building finally shattered the standard mold of post war Manhattan corporate towers and spit on the likes of David Childs-forcing him and his ilk to start thinking "outside the box" so to speak! Its' influence will continue to resonate and encourage architects to think boldly in NYC. For that alone it deserves a standing ovation.
It is a bit too squat for me though this is not really the designers fault. They did quite a commendable job considering all the various restraints placed upon them. They took chances and IMO have put in place the icon of Times Square for now and long into the future. Along with numerous video walls at the base the screens at top are designed and zoned to be fitted with video and/or neon if called for in the future.
And of course this was the first "green" (environmentally sustainable designed) office tower built in NYC and I believe in the USA.

7 World Trade August 22nd, 2003, 02:59 AM i like the overall feel of the skyscraper. but the top just annoys me, especially the fact that i think they're planning to put a taller atenna on it >(. the top of the building should get a total makeover but otherwise it's okay.
8.0
AtlanticaC5 August 26th, 2003, 03:08 PM I don't remember how many points I gave it earlier, but now I say 8.5/10. It looks very futuristic, one of my favorites in NYC.
SFtoBoise September 2nd, 2003, 02:58 PM 6.5/10
Labrador September 2nd, 2003, 03:56 PM 7.5/10 :)
One of the corners reminds me of the HSBC in London, and so does the shiny blue glass used. However, I don't like the 'thing' at the top much.
Wu-Gambino September 3rd, 2003, 12:53 AM 8/10
Better in person. This building could only fit in at Times Square. If you put it anywhere else in NYC, it would be a travesty.

sjambler November 25th, 2003, 07:33 PM 8.5/10
I like the oversized antenna that was added recently - I think it makes the building look sort of like an insect
Aquarius December 21st, 2003, 07:10 PM Risked, original, futuristic, 8,5/10 ;)
LeCom February 1st, 2004, 08:20 PM It looks kind of dumb without the antenna. Yet, New York doesn't frequently get skyscrapers of such kind.
Jasonhouse February 3rd, 2004, 08:08 AM This building was looking pretty good until that hideous crown appeared. It it would have been 10 more floors, instead of that crap, the building would be very nice.
5.5/10

Jasonhouse got it right. Add ten floors and remove the monstrosity on top and you have yourself a great building. I like the curved corners on the blue glass, and the mixing facades is pretty good too.
yoyo22 July 31st, 2004, 12:13 AM IN addition, I am not fond of the enterance to the building itself. Stark and uninviting.
Ellatur August 10th, 2004, 03:40 AM one of my personal favorite 10/10

Q-TIP March 11th, 2005, 03:46 PM Different 9/10 for NY!
LeCom March 12th, 2005, 11:52 PM Love this one. A total whack mess, businesslike on one side, world's largest screen on another, mixed facades right above it, a totally unrelated shape on the top, giant billboards on the top and a rocket aith a launch pad above. All the characteristics of Times Square.
MattSal March 14th, 2005, 04:13 AM Great facade and great design. Gives downtown NYC the modern look it so desperately needs. I give it a 9/10.
get13 April 13th, 2005, 03:18 PM I don't like this building. It doesn't fit in with the surroundings. And the top is disgusting.
4/10
Djoez April 13th, 2005, 09:54 PM Wow high-tech architecture. Looks good 8/10
PornStar April 20th, 2005, 01:55 AM Too many different styles/parts/materials don't really make this one a nice building. And that awful antenna makes it even worse.
6.5/10 , since those commercials save it from a complete disaster.
lakegz April 20th, 2005, 10:39 PM one of my favorites, and to think i used to not like it!
heres a pic i took over the weekend
http://images2.fotop.net/albums/lakegz/lakegz/P4170078.jpg
Justadude April 21st, 2005, 01:52 AM Whoa... very very different. I think the elements work together well, though. The colors are complimentary and the different textures don't intrude on each other. I wouldn't want to see a whole city full of buildings like this, but it's a pretty neat looking thing on its own.
Pengui April 21st, 2005, 07:51 AM Huuuh is that deconstructivism ? OK, I don't like it ^^
It looks like a striped off Jiali Plaza.
The top part is one of the worst I've ever seen, but the mess of shapes at the bottom is not much better.
1 or maybe 1.5 if I'm on a good day ^^
360 Modena April 22nd, 2005, 12:53 PM errrr, ugly antenna, sorry, i don't like it 5/10

Phobos May 13th, 2005, 12:06 AM 8/10
It's not a "new yorkish" building, however,it gives diversity to the city's skyline.
3tmk May 14th, 2005, 04:05 AM 3 or less
Biggest piece of crap in my city.
I guess I'm too harsh and it might be worth more, however I only like the base, and it looks good from the street, as well as some parts of the facade. But when you look up and see that top, you just think WTF? The problem is that there is no way of hiding it, it's too tall
And it's in midtown, btw
Latoso May 28th, 2005, 12:54 AM 6.5/10 Conde Nasty!
Jules May 29th, 2005, 01:07 AM Doesn't deserve to stand in NYC. 3.5.

SkyscraperJunky November 24th, 2005, 06:22 PM 7/10.. The building's great. A very unique building. The two facades it has make it very unique as well, but.. can they just shorten that antenna! It's just WAY too big. Looks too out of place.
Besides that, I think the building is beautiful and a great addition to the skyline.
Adam from Oz November 25th, 2005, 12:06 PM Looks like someone put the facade in a blender on puree.
The antenna is just way too tall for the building.

Scruffy88 January 9th, 2006, 07:59 PM Love this building. 4 sides, 4 completley different facades. The glassier sides are aimed at Times Sq and the granite and more classic sides aimed at 42 st and the business world. and now they've added an antenna at the top that rises to 1100 ft. not bad at all. i see this changeling design copied all over the place but this one is still the best.

AndySocks April 2nd, 2006, 05:46 PM Sometimes it looks cool in context with the city, but on it's own it's a bit silly. Some bonus points for being the most recognizable building in NYC when standing right next to it and not looking up, thanks to the NASDAQ ticker. 5.0

Neutral! November 12th, 2006, 04:38 AM Why -.5 for location? What's wrong with the location?
It's in between all of the other buildings and it's difficult to appreciate the full beauty of the structure because they kinda block it.
Edit: In other words, "it gets lost in the jungle" like someone said.
centreoftheuniverse November 12th, 2006, 04:48 AM This is rate our talls, not rate the photo. You should give points to just the building itself, not for things beyond its control.
I don't see how you can subtract points from a building because of it's neighbors. It's like saying that Miss Universe should only win because her family members must also be good looking too.

futureproof December 4th, 2006, 10:27 PM now that´s what i call a piece of crap for new york standars
can´t you all see the building is just too small and has a desproportionated spire on top?
those kind of spires were not meant to be reaching the sky in new york
the building = 4, the name= 1

Well..number 1
IT'S A ANTENNA. NOT A SPIRE.
You should reserch things beforehand so you won't look retarded.
From wiki:
During 2002 and 2003, the existing radio antenna, built for Clear Channel Communications as a backup transmitter site for its four FM stations, was removed and replaced with a 300-foot (91 m) mast to support television and radio broadcasters who were displaced by the destruction of the World Trade Center. Including the antenna, its height is 1,143 ft (348 m), making it the second tallest structure in the New York City, behind the Empire State Building.
Number 2
Disliking the name is kinda dumb considering Conde Nast is a worldwide magazine publishing company. You've probably read some of their magazines:
Allure
Details
GQ
Glamour
Jane
Lucky
Men's Vogue
Self
Teen Vogue
Vogue
W
To name a few.

tigerboy January 15th, 2007, 11:53 PM This is not a great building but it is a very good one. it is cheery and light and confounds the conservatism many would seek to impose in that area.
it is tall enough. it is unafraid and it deserves an 8. One of the best NY talls in the recent years.
