niks8887 November 23rd, 2009, 09:53 AM After a six-year delay, the third auto cluster in the state after Pune and Nashik has got the green signal with the centre approving Rs 80 crore for the Marathwada Auto Cluster (MAC) in Aurangabad.
It will cater to more than 1,200 ancillary and engineering units and generate jobs. In 2002, the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA) had initiated the cluster project. The proposal was submitted to the government in 2003-04. But lack of political will and funds delayed it.
The CMIA again submitted a fresh proposal in 2006 in according with revised guidelines of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, but got no results.
CMIA recently held an apex committee meeting in New Delhi with the officials of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry for approval of the project under the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme.
“Finally, our dream has come true,” said Ashish Garde, Hon. Secretary, CMIA to The Sunday Express.
Ajay Shankar, Secretary, Renu Sharma, Joint Secretary and Director Shashi Ranjan Kumar of the department reviewed the revised project report for MAC and approved a central grant of Rs 60 crore. The state will contribute the rest. CMIA has already formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Marathwada Auto Cluster for setting up the facility in Aurangabad.
This is the third such project in Maharashtra. In Pune, the local industries association, MCCIA, has set up an Auto Cluster Project in association with Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and another is coming up in Nashik.
niks8887 November 23rd, 2009, 09:54 AM Will push hard for industrial growth, promises Dar
Pledging to push for Maharashtra’s progress, state Industries Minister Rajendra Darda on Saturday sought support from all parties in the task. At a felicitation ceremony in Aurangabad, Darda said basic infrastructure for industrial growth would be developed. He said the state was leading in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and will soon emerge as number one destination for new groups, including the IT sector.
Darda said inclusion of Aurangabad in Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project will provide growth opportunity for cities located in 150 km range of the special railway track for the venture. He said sick industries were a major challenge. “We should try to find why these industries are sick. If need be, they can be taken over by another group. But existing laws for the process are too complicated,” he said, adding that he would try to get the laws amended.
He also announced to start a single-window facility for completion of various pending works in the industrial sector.
The minister also said that laws for providing compensation to farmers against lands acquired by MIDC should be changed.

niks8887 March 13th, 2010, 07:59 AM Audi Q5 to Be Assembled in Aurangabad , India
German automaker Audi will start production of its model Q5 at its Aurangabad plant in Maharashtra by mid-2010. The plant currently assembles Audi A4 and A6 at this plant and intends to produce 500 units of Q5 initially. Audi Q5 is a soft-roader that is capable of doing tasks as good as Q7 but comes in a more manageable package. The car is being imported as CKD units which will be assembled locally to bring down the costs. Completely built units in India attract 100 percent duty making the car extremely costly and not available for even upper middle class.
The completely knocked down (CKD) production site in Aurangabad is based on an extremely flexible concept that means it can ‘breathe’ and can be adapted to new market requirements. The start of production for an additional model is related to the volume and possible anytime. We will start assembling our SUV Q5 in India by mid-2010,” said Benoit Tiers, Audi India Managing Director.
Luxury car makers are gearing up to capture more of the market by manufacturing the popular models here to bring down costs. The Audi Q5 is priced at Rs 38 lakh for a base model. The company did not want to comment on what could be the price for the CKD model.

Japan to aid state's first green industrial estate
Twitter Delicious Myspace Digg Stumble Upon Facebook Thu, Feb 25 11:30 AM
Mumbai, Feb. 25 -- State will have its first eco-friendly industrial estate in Shendra near Aurangabad, some 400 km from Mumbai. The Japanese government will grant funds for the project, and its experts will work on it later this year. Shendra will be one of the three pollution-free industrial estates in the country to be set up in association with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The other two will come up in Haryana and Gujarat. Shendra will be developed along the lines of Kitakyushu in Japan. Once one of the most polluted industrial cities in Japan, Kitakyushu has now emerged as a smart city, where all kinds of industrial waste - including that generated from automobiles, home appliances, medical instruments, construction, food processing and plastic - are recycled by private companies. Shendra's current facility, run by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), is home to multinationals such as Skoda, which has an automobile unit. A special economy zone has also been planned there. Industry Minister Rajendra Darda told Hindustan Times that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan during his recent visit there. Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corpor-ation (DMICDC) will be the nodal agency. DMICDC is a 1,483-km dedicated freight corridor passing through five states before reaching Maharashtra. Shendra falls in that corridor. That's why it was chosen for the project.
MIDC's CEO, Kshatrapati Shivaji said Japan will fund and carry out experiments, followed by private investments through companies like Toshiba, Itochu, Mitsubishi and Mitsui by 2011

German automobile major Mercedes Benz launched the GL 350CDI BlueEfficiency, what it called the “most premium SUV [sport utility vehicle] in the Indian market” here on Thursday.
The two variants — GL Executive priced at Rs. 63.57 lakh and the GL Luxury priced at Rs. 68.48 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) — were unveiled by the Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes Benz India Wilfried Aulbur.
The seven-seater luxury model is equipped with a 7 G-TRONIC gearbox, 4Matic Permanent all-wheel drive, electrically folding third row of seats and a panoramic sunroof. Speaking to journalists on the occasion, Dr. Aulbur said, “In its segment, the GL-Class is the largest SUV and the only one that offers full-size third row seats with independent AC vents. It has exemplary head and leg room. The BlueEfficiency tag is a statement of its environmental compatibility.”
He said that special attention had been paid to safety. The models were equipped with the pre-safe preventive occupant protection system, a world first in this market segment. The crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and the front passenger would support the head sooner in a rear-end impact.
It accelerates from a speed of 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 9.5 seconds, reaches a top speed of 210 kmph and consumes 9.7 litres of fuel per 100 km. It is also fitted with special off-road features such as Downhill Speed Regulation and hill-start assist.
Dr. Aulbur said, “The model is aggressively priced as we would like to occupy the luxury SUV sector in India, which has a space for 9,000-10,000 units a year.” He said that Mercedes Benz was planning to expand with showrooms and dealerships in Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets like Goa, Bhubaneshwar, Indore, Aurangabad and Surat.

Mr Vinay Surana, projects director, Ajanta Infrastructure, the company which is building Asia’s largest retail mall in Aurangabad, and a partner to the summit, said: “Aurangabad is well connected to Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, which are the existing IT hubs. Companies can break even faster in a city like Aurangabad, compared to existing IT hubs as the cost of living, land rates and lease rentals are half of that in cities like Pune. The city has a vibrant population and so we have undertaken the project of constructing a 22-lakh square-feet retail mall. The project will be ready in the next 18 months, but we have already leased out almost 60% space. The mall will get anchor brands like Shoppers’ Stop, Westside, Adlabs, Croma and @home, for the first time in Aurangabad

fuwad April 29th, 2010, 05:24 AM 'Aurangabad group' buys 115 Mercs at one go
Prafulla Marpakwar, TNN, Apr 29, 2010, 02.44am IST
MUMBAI: Aurangabad, the city in the backward region of Marathwada represented by chief minister Ashok Chavan and heavy industries minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, is known for its poverty, acute water shortage and lack of industrial development.
Last week, however, it achieved a different kind of distinction, when a group of its prominent denizens made what was possibly the single largest bulk booking of Mercedes Benz cars in India— an astounding 115 of them.
The feat was initiated and achieved when 115 industrialists, mediapersons, exporters, developers, medical professionals and lawyers, led by industrialists Rishi Darda and Rahul Dhoot, joined hands, set up what they called the ‘Aurangabad group’ and booked the swanky Mercs. ‘‘We have promised to deliver them in October, preferably before Dussera,’’ Pune-based Mercedes dealer Chandravadan Bhandari told TOI.
Bhandari said the Aurangabad group had set up a seven-member team to negotiate with the manufacturers. ‘‘Since it was the highest ever bulk booking, their plea was considered and they were given a good offer,’’ he said. ‘‘They accepted it and booked 115 cars.’’
Currently, there are five brands of Mercedes Benz available — C, E, M, S and GL — ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 95 lakh. While the C-Classic costs Rs 25 lakh, the S-Classic sells for well over Rs 95 lakh.
Although not named as such, the Aurangabad group was active in the city in social work, organising medical camps, religious pilgrimages and so on. The proposal to acquire high-end cars was mooted a month ago. Several brands were discussed and ultimately, it was decided to go in for the Mercedes Benz. Initially, fewer than 15 persons were willing but later the figure shot up to a whopping 115.

The bogies meet the European standards, that is, EN norms, and will have a minimum life of 25 years and a lower lifecycle cost.
Commenting on setting up of the plant, Armin Bruck, Managing Director, Siemens, said “This bogie factory is the first outside Europe and the U.S., and it enables us to offer our customers localised products at highly competitive rate.” Bogies form a part of the undercarriage of the coach and consist of a bogie frame, wheels, axles, suspension systems and brake equipment. Usually, two bogies are fitted to each carriage, wagon or locomotive, one at each end. They are primarily responsible for the ride quality, safety and comfort of the passengers on board. The range to be manufactured include metro bogies with 18 tonnes axle load, bogies for local trains with 21.5 tonnes axle load, bogies for high speed trains, high comfort bogies for passenger coaches and high axle load locomotive bogies.
fuwad May 1st, 2010, 03:21 PM Siemens new bogie facility at Aurangabad
The factory will manufacture high performance and superior quality bogies for locomotives, passenger coaches, electric multiple units and metro coaches.

niks8887 May 8th, 2010, 12:02 PM When the Mercedes office in Pune got a call two months ago from Aurangabad, a city better known for the nearby seventh century Ajanta-Ellora caves than for its industrial growth, the salesman at the receiving end was not impressed. Not even when the caller told him that they wanted to book at least a 100 Mercedes cars, the largest-ever bulk booking of the luxury car in India. “We’ll call you back,” he said, but never did.
It’s an attitude that raises the hackles of Aurangabad’s mushrooming new billionaires. It’s an uphill task, they say, to convince anyone outside Aurangabad that there’s big money in this small town, once touted as Asia’s fastest growing city but better known for the ‘industrialists’ from outside who milked the state government dry of subsidies and vanished overnight. “We resent being called a backward town,” explains Sachin Nagori, a builder who, like many of the city’s rich, has made his fortune from scratch in the last 10 years. “Even MacDonald’s and Pizza Hut haven’t set up shop here as yet,” Nagori says, adding that a few years ago when Aurangabad’s entrepreneurs wanted Skoda to open shop here, they had to make a trip to the parent office with a Czech interpreter to persuade them. Fed up with the patronising tone they get from metros and multinationals alike, Nagori persuaded his friends and business associates to book their Mercs in bulk—140 of them at last count. “It was time to tell people outside that Aurangabad, far from being backward, has the potential to be another Pune.”
The moped is still seen in the city
It was easier to convince Aurangabad’s rich to buy their first—or second and third, in some cases—Mercs than to persuade the luxury car company to take them seriously, according to Nagori. “We realised it wasn’t going to work with a simple call, so a few of us went to Pune and gave a PowerPoint presentation about us and Aurangabad in general.” The dealer then organised a road show in Aurangabad, and agreed to take bookings. “They gave us only three days to make the bookings, otherwise the number would have easily gone up to 250-300,” Nagori says, adding that he’s still receiving cheques from those he couldn’t get in touch with on time.
Kiran Wadhi, 41, Builder/Contractor
“At least 25 per cent of the people living in our apartment complex can afford to buy a Mercedes,” says Wadhi. It takes courage to own one, according to him, because while it’s every businessman’s dream to drive in a Mercedes, “we put it off, saying not now, maybe next year.”
It’s not hard to understand why the Mercedes Benz dealer, Chandravadan Bhandari, took so long to recognise their true worth: Aurangabad’s new rich seem unlike any you’ve seen before. They don’t smoke or drink, don’t flaunt labels, nobody’s ever heard of a child going astray and their idea of a good time is getting together with other families for a potluck dinner. And many of them continue to live in 400 sq ft apartments with peeling walls and stained stairways, the only concession to their new status being the two big cars parked among the neighbours’ scooters and Marutis. Like Kiran Wadhi, a builder who moved into his modestly furnished two-bedroom apartment in 1993, when he was still working for a construction company on a salary of Rs 5,000. For Wadhi, who rode a bike for many years before he could afford his first Maruti car, the Merc is less a status symbol than a sign of achievement: he and his family of five (mother, wife, two school-going sons) have spent 14 of their happiest years in this tiny flat, as Mona, his wife, tells us. So why spend a fortune acquiring a Mercedes? “Because it’s always been my dream to own one—for a businessman, it’s a sign of ultimate achievement.” Mona interjects: “Our son always used to ask, ‘When will Papa get a Mercedes car?’” But the Wadhis are clear about one thing: “Just because we’re buying a Mercedes, we’re not going to change our lifestyle. We are old-fashioned people who believe in old values.”
Even the concept of a steel-and-glass office is quite new: until Nagori built his swank business centre a year ago, most of Aurangabad’s multi-billion businesses were conducted in 300 sq ft rooms, with an old desk and a few chairs and a mudpot of drinking water. It’s the kind of office even Sitaram Agrawal, chairman of one of Aurangabad’s biggest real estate companies, had until he shifted to his new office four years ago. In fact, Agrawal’s first Mercedes—gifted to him by his son for his 25th wedding anniversary—was parked for years outside their little office and flat. Was it an embarrassment, considering the neighbours probably owned, at best, a scooter or a bike? “It was a gift and I had to honour my son’s feelings,” explains Agrawal, whose father ran a grocery store and who started his own career on a scooter, running small contracts.
As in Agrawal’s case, the Merc is sometimes a tribute by sons to fathers who have built their business empires out of nothing. Virendrasingh Pawar has booked a top-class Mercedes for precisely that reason: his father made a fortune from scratch by supplying private security to Aurangabad’s industries and hotels. And now that Virendrasingh has taken over the business, diversifying into electronic security, growing in the last few years into the country’s leading firm, he wants to celebrate by gifting his father his dream car. For himself, young Pawar would prefer a BMW but feels that can wait. At first, Pawar senior, who has seen hard times, resisted, but like Agrawal, succumbed for reasons of sentiment that had nothing to do with a desire to flaunt a status symbol.
Manzoor Khan, 49, Silk mill owner
Khan’s grandfather started the first Himroo powerloom factory. He went to work in a tonga. With business growing fast, Khan is about to demolish his old home and build a new mansion instead. “In the last three years, owning a Merc here is no longer seen as flaunting your wealth,” he says.
Aurangabad’s rich are also bending the hierarchy of Merc models to suit their own notion of family ranking. As Agrawal explains, the Merc he booked with the group of 140 was going to be of the top class, costing Rs 81 lakh. Since he already owns a Merc, he wanted to buy one for his son instead. But the son refused to accept the top class, saying that if his father drove a E-class Merc, he’d only drive a lower model—so they ended up getting the C-class one.
For Santosh Muthiyan too, the Merc is more a matter of family prestige. Some twenty years ago, his father, who owned a cloth shop, threw him out of the house because he failed his tenth class exam. Muthiyan began as a door-to-door salesman. Today, he and his partners own the biggest infrastructure company in Aurangabad, building luxury homes and a mall that is expected to be one of Asia’s biggest. At 37, Muthiyan believes it’s time he started living: in a few months he’ll be moving from his 1,000 sq ft apartment into a 51,000 sq ft mansion with a swimming pool and gym that he’s building for himself. Left to himself, he’d probably like to go on living in his present apartment which he shows us around with great pride. But Muthiyan sees an upward lifestyle almost as a challenge. “I promised myself that I’d take my father to live with me when I have a big house and a big car, and I’m now fulfilling that pledge.” Muthiyan has, of course, booked the top-class car for his father.
Muthiyan believes that money must “rotate”; that it’s the obligation of every rich man to spend so that the city can grow. But there are those who scoff at this “Mercedes Benz patriotism”. As Ram Bhogale, chairman of Umasons Auto Components, one of the leading auto parts manufacturers here, says: “I can certainly afford to buy a Merc, but why would I spend Rs 50-80 lakh on a car? I’d rather invest it in a machine for the factory.” This Merc gang, according to Bhogale, is attracting the wrong kind of attention to Aurangabad. “You’ll end up attracting scamsters and real estate mafia here by these sort of gimmicks,” he says, adding: “Don’t build bridges to wrong destinations.”
Sanjeevkumar Kankariya, 49, Kankariya Group Chief
Starting his career selling cherries, Kankariya took a loan to start a printing press when he was 21. A multibillionaire today, he says: “I started off on a bicycle, and will always think of myself like that. But there’s no harm spending when you’ve earned it and pay your taxes.”
Agrees A.N. Kadam, secretary of the Mahatma Gandhi mission, which runs several private colleges with an annual turnover of Rs 32 crore: “There’s a cultural difference between the old and new generations in Aurangabad. The latter want fast money and development, not caring if it’s sustainable or not. They call it development, I call it a mess.”
“But it’s in the nature of entrepreneurs to be impatient,” argues Nandkishore Kagliwal, another self-made billionaire who now heads the region’s biggest seed companies. Kagliwal says he’d be just as happy to drive in his old ambassador car. But he’s booked a Merc as well just in solidarity with the group.
As Mansingh Pawaar, vice-chief of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture puts it: “The idea was to make the world sit up and take note of Aurangabad’s rapid growth, and it worked.” What an idea, Sirji!

India101 June 5th, 2010, 02:08 PM No, I am not from Aurangabad, though I am quiet interested in it.
And Satyam Cineplexes is planning multiplexs in cities like Aurangabad.
Satyam Cineplexes bets big on tier II cities
Delhi-based multiplex operator Satyam Cineplexes has plans to expand in tier II cities. It has already raised Rs.55-60 crore for the next 30 screens that it will open in the near future. The amount is raised through private equity, internal accruals and debts.
“Recently, we spread our wings outside Delhi with the opening of a multiplex in Indore. We have plans to launch multiplexes in Jodhpur, Aurangabad, Mysore, Rohtak and Jaipur. For tier II and III cities, our tie-ups are mostly with malls,” said Deven Chachra, MD, Satyam Cineplexes.
Satyam's five-screen multiplex in Indore came up at Century 21 Mall in December last year.
The per screen cost in tier II cities would be Rs.1.5-1.75 crore, Chachra said, while the average multiplex area will be 35,000 sq.ft.
On the retail rental model with malls in tier II cities, Chachra said, “Satyam Cineplexes will have minimum guarantee as well as revenue sharing retail rental model with them.”
Satyam Cineplexes is a fully-owned multiplex chain of Superior Films Pvt Ltd.

fuwad July 24th, 2010, 09:37 AM Bajaj to invest Rs 500 crore in Waluj 4-wheeler plant
Nilanjana Ghosh Choudhury / DNASaturday, July 24, 2010
Pune: Bajaj Auto will come up with its 4-wheeler plant at Waluj near Aurangabad instead of the present proposed location at Chakan.
Addressing shareholders at the annual general meeting on Thursday, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director Bajaj Auto, said, “In all probability we will shift the 4-wheeler plant to Waluj since we have enough land available there and have also reconstructed few of the existing buildings.”
Bajaj had earlier said the company may look at an alternative location for its small car project since it has not been able to get the adequate land at Chakan.
Kevin D’sa, president (finance), at an analyst conference call, said the new 4-wheeler platform, which can also build 3-wheelers and the ultra-low-cost car, will come up with an investment of Rs500 crore.
“The manufacturing cost will be over and above the Rs500 crore and at a later stage the production can be shifted out of Waluj,” D’sa said.
Refusing to divulge much details on the project, Bajaj said, “It is a confidential agreement between the 3 companies, however, we want to make a money making car. Capex would be under Rs500 crore and hopefully we will be able to launch it by 2012.”
The Waluj plant is supposed to be a dedicated site for manufacture of 3-wheelers and the small car. Bajaj already has a plant at Chakan manufacturing motorcycles. D’sa said due to intense competition from TVS in the 3-wheeler passenger carrier segment, there has been some loss of its 90% market share.
“The removal of permit in Tamil Nadu has opened up the market for us where the pent-up demand is around 35,000 units. In the next 3-4 months we will see significant sales happening in this region,” he said.

fuwad July 26th, 2010, 10:26 AM DMICDC to invite global bids for four mega projects soon. Rs 900 crore exhibition and convention centre in Aurangabad.

New Delhi: The Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC), a union government company, would invite global bids in the next three months to build four mega infrastructure and logistics projects as it begins building sophisticated industrial cities across northern and western India connecting Haryana and UP with Maharashtra with a total investment of $100 billion. These six states, where new cities would come up, account for half of the country’s industrial production and exports and about 43% of the country’s total economic output.
The projects, for which international competitive bids would be called, include a Rs 2,500 crore logistics hub in Pune and a Rs 800 crore-Rs 900 crore exhibition and convention centre in Aurangabad. More expensive projects include a mega industrial park in Gujarat at Dholera and a water supply project in Madhya Pradesh. The initial cost estimates could change as the DMICDC gives final touches to the projects. DMICDC CEO & MD Amitabh Kant told FE that bids would be invited for these projects in the next three to four mon ths from specialists in multi-modal logistics, public transport and water supply management. The first phase of the industrial corridor project would be completed by 2017. About 65%-70% of all the projects would be executed in public private partnerships and a large number of them would require trunk infrastructure or long distance pipelines. The projects would be executed with state government participation to ensure that land, water, power and environment clearances are tied up without delay.
“If India has to grow at 9%, then we need large scale manufacturing. For that, we need to step up manufacturing growth from 16% to 25% of gross domestic product. That’s why we are creating the new industrial cities where the back bone would be the Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor,” Amitabh Kant said.
The states that would directly get benefited are Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

fuwad August 23rd, 2010, 08:55 PM Greaves Cotton to set-up Rs 100 crore plant in Aurangabad
23 Aug, 2010,
MUMBAI: Greaves Cotton, one of India's leading engineering companies, is setting up a state-of-the-art greenfield plant in Shendra, an industrial area of Aurangabad in Maharashtra.
The initial investment in the plant of Rs 60-crore will go up to Rs 100 crore in stages and the plant will have a capacity of 80,000 engines per annum which will eventually be scaled-up to meet industry demands, a press release issued here today stated.
This unit will manufacture both single and twin cylinder engines, meeting all contemporary emission norms, which will be primarily supplied to existing as well as new three-and-four-wheeled small commercial vehicles manufacturers.
These vehicles are normally owner-driven and generate immense potential for self-employment, the release said.
With an annual production of over 3-lakh engines, Greaves Cotton is among the world's largest manufacturers of single cylinder diesel engines.
Over 80 per cent of the diesel three-wheelers in India are powered by Greaves engines and more than 2-million Greaves engines are already in the market powering small 3-and-4 -wheeled commercial vehicles.
The foundation stone for the new facility was laid by Maharashtra's Industries Minister Rajendra Darda on August 22 and it is expected to go on-stream by end of FY 11.
The setting up of this additional facility will enable Greaves Cotton to capitalise on the huge growth potential seen in the automotive engines business particularly for three-and- four-wheeled small commercial vehicles which are extensively used in the 'last mile' transportation segment in the country, the release said.

ganesh_evo75 September 22nd, 2010, 08:02 AM @ niks8887,
you seems to love the Aurangabad city a lot, as is same with me.
you have provided a lot of development knowledge regarding various developments going in abd around Aurangabad, thats great, thank you.
I have always dreamt of Aurangabad as an metro which seems to be around the corner. Also the city was always got an step child treatment from the Politician and Govt. of Maharashtra, while the Central Govt. always supporting any development plan whatever if at all State needed or asked for.
Now as of Prozone, or development like these seems to be very promising though its taking a lot of time and are getting ahead of time scheduled inaugrations and openings. While now some good peoples from Aurangabad MNC ( Muncipal corporation ) and especialy young ones like Pramod Rathore, Prashant Desarda and Mayors also seems to have decided to be a part of the makeover of the city. The move toward widening the Jalna road seems to be way in the right direction. But at the same time one cannot be sure of the same unless and untill people like us support the cause and also major support from MLA's and especialy Radhakrishna Vikhe patil.
About the thread, almost all the projects are been discussed and we will make sure that lot of peoples should get into this so that we can get together for the cause of Aurangabad development.

fuwad October 7th, 2010, 06:29 AM Aurangabad drives into the global arena
TNN, Oct 6, 2010, 11.32pm IST
AURANGABAD/PUNE: It was a deal that put Aurangabad a city in the backward region of Marathwada on the global map. The bulk order placed in April this year for over 100 Mercedes Benz cars by the Aurangabad group' comprising doctors, builders, industrialists and professionals is all set to be fulfilled on October 14. The number of cars booked has gone up from 115 in the initial stages to 150, and is expected to touch the 160-mark by the time of delivery.
Currently, there are five models of Mercedes Benz available in the market C, E, M, S and GL with ex-showroom price ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 70 lakh. The actual price will be higher after adding charges for octroi, RTO, road tax and other costs. A majority of the cars booked by the group are among the costliest from the Mercedes stable.
Though the Mercedes Benz has its plant near the Chakan industrial area in Pune, the deal was sealed at the company's headquarters in Germany. "The deal is very important for the German car maker as well. It is being considered as a special project by the company," said a senior official of the company, who refused to be identified.
Deven Bhandari of B U Bhandari Motors, said, "This would take the total number of Mercedes cars in Aurangabad close to 190, which is a significant size for a high-end car dealer. As a dealer, we are scouting for a good location to set up a well-equipped, after-sales service centre in Aurangabad." Another location would be Kolhapur, which already flaunts a large number of modified Mercs.
It all started on a fine February morning this year, when, while working out in a gym, Sachin Nagori, an Aurangabad-based builder and developer, shared his childhood dream of owning a Mercedes with two of his friends. Sachin suggested that all his friends should also join in.
"We laughed it off as we were not sure of even 11 people joining the bandwagon. But, Sachin continued to pursue the idea wherever and whenever he got an opportunity," said Akshay Rathi, director of the Kaigaon Paper Mill, and Balkrishna Bhakre, director, Disha Group, a construction company.
Soon, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, developers, traders and professionals, including lawyers and doctors, joined in and saw it as an opportunity to promote Aurangabad and bring it to the world's notice.
Nagori said, "It was a collective effort."
"It's all about the story of first generation entrepreneurs, who tasted the benefits of privatisation and globalisation, and also proves the uniqueness of Aurangabad where people have faith in each other," said Maansingh Pawaar, the president of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA).
Pawaar, who is one of the Mercedes buyers, said the main idea behind the collective effort was basically to showcase the city's strength. "We have succeeded in grabbing the world's attention," he said.
"Each of us has certain skills in our respective areas, but we faced an image apprehension. Given an opportunity, we have proved our worth in almost all fields," said Nilesh Kapadia, a 39-year-old chartered accountant, who runs a network of 2,000 CAs across the country and is among the 150-plus Mercedes buyers.
Interestingly enough, at least four persons of the Aurangabad group already own a Mercedes, but they found the idea of joining the group to effect an image makeover for Aurangabad an exciting prospect.
"Collective buying was a novel and exciting idea," said Sitaram Agrawal and Sanjay Kasliwal, who already bought Mercedes cars just a few months ago.
"Many in the town could afford a Mercedes, but one needs an attitude and confidence to actually buy one," they said. "If the Mercedes had extended its deadline for booking, the number of buyers would have crossed the 300-mark," said Manzoor Khan, another buyer.
Ajit Muley of Ajit Seeds, who, too, owns a Mercedes, said, "It's not that those who booked the Mercedes want to flaunt their wealth. It is the attitude. They could have owned it any time, but to buy it collectively makes a difference."
"Their reason for coming together and spending money is something that appealed to me. Buying Mercedes cars in a group to create and project an image of the city was a novel and commendable idea and that was the reason I joined the group," said Ulhas Gaoli, an industrial consultant.
"The officials from the company, too, responded positively and took us very seriously. They visited Aurangabad thrice and held a series of meetings. Subsequently, banks, too, came forward with their offers of assistance. Eighty per cent of the vehicles have been financed by the bank," Gaoli added.
A grand function is being planned in Aurangabad around the delivery date, which is expected to be attended by chief minister Ashok Chavan and State Bank of India chairman O P Bhat.

fuwad October 8th, 2010, 07:53 PM India's largest and the first horizontally designed mall to open in Aurangabad
Syed Rizwanullah, TNN, Oct 7, 2010
AURANGABAD: After booking a fleet of high-end cars, Aurangabad is all set to witness the opening of the first phase of Prozone' India's largest and the first horizontally designed shopping mall spread over 1 million sq ft area, housing a mall, hotel and office blocks. The inauguration will be held on October 8.
"It will offer the entire Marathwada region a vast range of shopping and entertainment experiences and it will also help attract tourists," said Nikhil Chaturvedi, managing director of Provogue and Prozone.
Prozone Aurangabad, to be opened on Friday, is a joint venture of Provogue (India) Limited and Capital Shopping Centres Group Plc UK's leading shopping centre developer, formerly known as Liberty International Plc.
"After a three-year study of the city's demography, its youth population, industry, tourism potential and future growth prospects in the next 20 years, we chose to set up shop in Aurangabad," said Chaturvedi.
He said that after India sanctioned foreign direct investment ( FDI) into retail infrastructure sector in 2004, a number of investments and foreign partnerships happened that led to the accelerated development of shopping centres across the country.
"Most of these developments accounting for over 90 per cent investment have taken place in major metro or tier I cities. Now, the first major regional shopping and entertainment centre in a tier II city is set to be launched in Aurangabad," Chaturvedi said.
"Retail is one of the biggest drivers of GDP and it is expected to change the fortunes and lifestyle of people. We want to explore tourism potential which we feel has not been tapped properly. The tourists come to the town, but go back as soon as they visit the World Heritage monuments at Ajanta and Ellora as there are no other attractions. If they prolong their stay by just one day, it would make a huge difference and will help the region's GDP to grow by at least 15 per cent," Chaturvedi said.
Chaturvedi added that Prozone would also provide good job and growth opportunities to local youths.
A five-screen Satyam' Cineplex is also part of Prozone, he said, adding that every age group will have something to explore at the mall, turning the visit into a family outing.

fuwad October 8th, 2010, 07:57 PM Provogue to open its first mall in Aurangabad today
Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA
Provogue (India) Ltd, the country’s fourth-largest retail company, is opening its first Prozone mall in Aurangabad on Friday through its subsidiary Prozone, its joint venture with UK’s Capital Shopping Centres Group Plc (formerly called Liberty International Plc).
Prozone Aurangabad, a horizontally designed development of over 1 million square feet, is completing its phase one on Friday. It will include a mall, a hotel and office blocks.
The mall that has been designed keeping the regional community of Marathwada in mind, will create 5,000 jobs in Aurangabad. The company has already employed over 4,000 people for the first phase construction, which lasted three years. Once the hotel and office blocks are ready, more jobs will be created.
Nikhil Chaturvedi, managing director, Provogue and Prozone, is hoping to attract millions of tourists at the mall.
The mall will offer the entire Marathwada community a vast range of shopping and entertainment experiences for the first time from India’s leading retailers like Shoppers Stop, Westside, Pantaloon, Globus, Reliance Trends, Croma and others.
Aurangabad residents can look forward to shopping at fashion brands like Provogue, Nike, Reebok, United Colours of Benetton, Wills Lifestyle and Allen
Solly, while speciality stores across categories of footwear, kids, jewellery and books will also be a part of the mall.
“Prozone’s mantra ‘All my wants, in one place, for the whole family’ has driven every aspect of design, services and amenities of the shopping mall,” Chaturvedi said.
In all, the mall will comprise hypermarkets like Tata Trent’s Star India Bazaar, a food court having Indian and international quick service restaurants (QSRs), a 5-screen multiplex that will come up in phase two, a 40,000 sq ft family entertainment centre, a banquet hall and many retail stores.
Capital Shopping, the joint venture partner, owns 9 of the top 21 regional shopping centres in the UK.
“In the UK, Capital Shopping Centres attract more than 300 million visitors per annum. Prozone Aurangabad will have a significant impact on increasing the amount of time tourists spend in the city and can have huge impacts and benefits to the local populace and the exchequer,” Chaturvedi said.

fuwad October 11th, 2010, 05:12 PM OMIGPI fund opens first shopping mall in India
Old Mutual
11 October 2010
The Prozone Aurangabad Mall has opened its doors.
The Triangle Real Estate India Fund, a $120 million venture by Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments (OMIGPI) and ICS Realty, is targeting growth of its portfolio through more partnerships in retail-biased assets now that its first Indian investment, the Prozone Aurangabad Mall, has opened its doors.
Ben Kodisang, managing director of OMIGPI, a part of the Old Mutual international long-term savings and investment group, said the opening of the new shopping centre, which represents the fund's first investment, signalled it was ready for growth with existing partners - and new partners.
He said the Triangle fund was also partnering with Prozone, a joint venture between Provogue, a leading Indian retail group and Capital Shopping Centres plc, in investments in two other fast-growing cities - Coimbatore and Nagpur.
"In two years' time, these two cities should see the opening of these further investments with our partners. These will be mixed use developments covering 800 000 square feet (74 320m²) of retail, together with office, hospitality and residential components."
Mr Kodisang said the Prozone Aurangabad Mall, a $75 million shopping centre, symbolised the value of partnerships, and was a milestone in OMIGPI's decade-long associations with India.
"In 1999 ICS Infrastructure was founded to introduce international groups to India. In 2005 our initial links with ICS were cemented in Pioneer Property Zone. This joint venture where we contribute skills from our experiences in retail developments and ICS facilitates access to clients, enables developers in India to get a structured approach towards building and managing shopping centres. Having gained an appreciation of the Indian market - and of the opportunities - with our partners, we established the Triangle Real Estate India Fund, based in Mauritius, in 2008."
The Prozone Aurangabad Mall was also a realisation of an opportunity to address the under-representation of organised retail in smaller ‘tier 2' cities like Aurangabad in a responsible and sustainable way.
"We believe in the merits of investing in ‘tier 2' cities where there is market demand and which we believe offer better value and long term growth," said Mr Kodisang. "While we, as investors, and our stakeholders, are set to benefit from the fast-growing consumer market in India, we also recognise the benefits associated with the mall for the development of the Aurangabad community. These include upgraded roads, world-class shopping, entertainment and banqueting facilities and a market place for smaller local traders."
Prozone Aurangabad Mall, located in a prime residential neighbourhood in one of the fastest growing and industrialising cities in India, has 800 000 square feet (74 320m²) of space and more than 150 retail stores selling top local and international brands, a five-screen cinema complex, a large family entertainment centre, 3 000 parking bays and a market trading area to promote local entrepreneurs. The centre is anchored by key national retailers, including Shopper's Stop, Tata's Star India Bazaar, Croma and Westside, and select Pantaloon formats.
There are also plans to build an office complex above the centre. A business class hotel will be constructed to complement the precinct.
The mall is three kilometres from the city's international airport and a 15-minute drive from the city centre. It has a primary catchment area of 1 million middle- to high-income consumers within a radius of 7-10 kms (or 25 minutes' drive), while its secondary catchment area comprises about 1.65 million middle- to high-income consumers within a radius of 50-100 kms (30 -90 minutes' drive).
Aurangabad, housing the administrative headquarters of the Marathwada region, is a major educational centre. It ranks as the seventh-most-popular tourist destination in India, attracting some 1.5 million tourists a year to see the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves.

fuwad October 16th, 2010, 07:36 PM Sedans put Aurangabad on world map
Mumbai, Oct 15, DHNS
A group of industrialists, mediapersons, lawyers and doctors led by Rahul Dhoot of Videocon and Rishi Darda of Lokmat Media Group came together to change the general mindset about Aurangabad.
“Aurangabad has everything. It is an economic powerhouse, but investors are still scared of coming here due to its perceived negative image, which we have decided to change forever,” said Sachin Mulay, President of the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture.
The group sent a seven-member team led by Mulay to Benz’s outlet in Pune to negotiate the price, and the German automobile-maker was too happy to do the bidding, considering that it would be the single-largest bulk booking in one go.
The Indian arm of Mercedes manufactures three models - S class, E class and C class - at its Pune plant, and the prices range from Rs 28 lakh to Rs 78 lakh per piece. Of the 150 Mercedes-Benz cars that were sold, there were 13 S-, 74 E-, 39 C-, 6 GL- and 18 M-Class cars.
According to Manas Dewan, while the S, E and C class of cars were manufactured in India, the GL and M class of cars were imported from Benz’s US plant.
“It was a mix of locally made and imported cars and there was shipment time and other issues... the buyers also wanted to take delivery just before Diwali,” Dewan told Deccan Herald.
Mercedes-Benz India’s MD and CEO Wilfried Aulbur personally attended the handing over ceremony in Aurangabad.
“All of us have worked very hard to reach where we are today. And we all felt that we deserved to satisfy ourselves- and to realize a long cherished dream. It could only have been the best- and hence Mercedes was the brand to be!” exclaimed Rahul Mishrikotkar who drove away with an E-Class.
Proud owners
“We are well travelled and have exposure to different global brands. Yet when we analysed options, Mercedes emerged as the obvious choice,” said Rahul Pagaria, another proud Mercedes Benz owner.
The cars were delivered by a Pune-based distributor B U Bhandari, which has now opened a special service centre in Aurangabad to cater to the new vehicles.
“Now we have a service center right at our hometown, and then there is the Mondial service for roadside assistance… who else can offer such comprehensive assurance?” added Atul Save.
“In short the fascinating cars, impeccable service, customer oriented packages, as well as the high resale value made Mercedes the obvious choice. Of course, the tristar emblem is an unsurpassable statement!” summarised Sameer Mulay, who bought an ML-Class.
Till date, Aurangabad had 15 Mercedes, of which 11 belonged to the Mulay family alone, while four belonged to four other families.

fuwad October 20th, 2010, 06:51 PM Biggest Mercedes-Benz deal in a day in Aurangabad
16 Oct, 2010, 07.10AM IST,IANS
AURANGABAD: This sleepy Maharashtra town showed its massive spending power Friday as 150 gleaming new Mercedes-Benz cars purred out of the company premises with all the paperwork in order.
The buyers, known as the ' Aurangabad Group', included top industrialists, businessmen and professionals.
'We wanted to put Aurangabad on the world map by this,' commented Rishi Darda, managing director, Lokmat (newspaper) Group and one of the proud buyers of a Merc.
The customers started trooping in since Thursday for the deliveries of the vehicles of their choice and the entire programme ended Friday afternoon on the auspicious Navaratri ashthami day.
The 150 cars which were lovingly grabbed included 13 S-Class, 74 E-Class, 39 C-lass, and the imported variants -- six GL-Class and 18 ML-Class.
An elated Mercedes-Benz India managing director Wilfried Aulbur said there is tremendous economic power in tier-two and tier-three cities of India. 'Today, it came to the fore in a bold, aggressive and dynamic manner with the sale of 150 Mercedes-Benz cars at one stroke.'
The total sales figure for the day came to Rs 650 million (Rs 65 crore), making it the single biggest deal of its kind in a day for the company in the country, said Manas Dewan, deputy general manager, product management and corporate communications.
'All of us have worked very hard to reach where we are today. We all felt we deserved to satisfy ourselves - and to realise a long cherished dream. It could only have been the best - the Mercedes-Benz brand,' said Rahul Mishrikotkar of RHS Ventures , who bought an E-Class.
Aulbur said that Friday's record sale showcases Aurangabad as the 'new face of India'.
The deal has created significantly high interest from investors many of whom are now actively contemplating entry into this city, besides several large brands which are now aggressively eyeing Aurangabad as 'a preferred destination'.
Situated in the backward region of Marathwada, Aurangabad is world-renowned for the world heritage Ajanta-Ellora caves, the Bibi Ka Maqbara, Daulatabad Fort and the grave of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Prozone Aurangabad, designed to be a ‘horizontal mall’ on the lines of international developments, opened its doors to customers in a grand ceremony held recently. Spread over 20 acres, the mall promises to offer a truly multinational environment of shopping, entertainment and dining, among other facilities.
The grand opening ceremony was attended by political dignitaries, Bollywood celebrities and leaders of India’s largest retail giants such as Future Group and Shoppers Stop, among others. Also present on the occasion was David Fischel, global CEO of Capital Shopping Centres Group Plc, the leading shopping mall developer in the UK, which has co-developed the mall with Provogue (India) Ltd.
Stressing that growth opportunities are phenomenal in Aurangabad, Fischel said, “The people of Aurangabad, where half the residents are under 35 years of age, are eager for places to spend money. The city doesn’t have a bowling alley, hip nightclub, entertainment, enough retail options for everyone’s wallet or a place for families to gather for a relaxing day out. There’s no place for leisure here. We are totally committed to making the Prozone mall Marathwada’s premier retail and leisure destination. We will work hard to ensure that it becomes the pride of every citizen in the region.”
Prozone Aurangabad, a ground+1 structure with more than 1,500 parking spaces, offers world-class services and amenities and a thrilling environment involving a mix of entertainment, retail, food courts, cafés, restaurants, fine dining, banquet hall and a future hotel and commercial hub.
The mall will house India’s major retail brands, including Shoppers Stop, Star Bazaar, Westside, Pantaloons, Croma, Satyam Cineplexes, Reliance Trendz and KFC. The property also houses numerous support services including banks, ATMs, underground car parks and public transport, service alleys for transportation of goods, separate entry and exit for service vehicles, children’s play area, first-aid, staff canteen facilities, large atrium, 100 per cent power backup and logistics service providers.
The company expects the mall to attract more than six million unique visitors per year, about three times the total population of the city. Aurangabad is the first tier II city in India to develop a retail and leisure destination of this scale. The arrival of Prozone will lead to further rapid transformation of the city of Aurangabad and the Marathwada region.
A recent article on Bloomberg recounted surprise by Daimler AG on the order of over 140 Mercedes by a group of city leaders. Bloomberg reported that the community of just under two million today has undergone massive growth and development in the last few years, especially after investments from leading national and international corporates, which has created a new major hub of potential buyers and new-generation entrepreneurs.
Speaking before the opening ceremony, Nikhil Chaturvedi, managing director of Provogue and Prozone, said, “We saw the opportunity in Aurangabad from Day 1. The Aurangabad mall project has been a labour of love; we believe in the city and the passion and commitment of its government, community and businesses – we have invested a huge amount to ensure that Aurangabad will have the very best and the very first mall of international design standards of any city in India.”
Salil Chaturvedi, deputy managing director, Provogue and Prozone, noted, “The arrival of Prozone means that we’ll be bringing in tourists and business travellers to Aurangabad at a scale never seen before. And they’ll be staying longer in our city to enjoy our local lifestyle and culture and our new 'destination mall'. Prozone was built by the people of Marathwada and it is a leisure and retail destination for the people of the region. We are extremely proud to to be opening our first mall in the city of Aurangabad.”
Prozone is an FDI-compliant joint venture company between Capital Shopping Centres Group Plc of UK and Provogue (India) Limited. The JV invests in the development of regional mixed-use centres, which include retail, entertainment, food courts, multiplexes, IT parks, hotels and other commercial and mixed-use development.
Capital Shopping Centres is a UK FTSE-100 listed property company with assets of over £5 billion (equivalent to approximately Rs.38,000 crore), of which regional mixed-use centres account for over 90 per cent of the portfolio. The company is the third largest REIT in the UK and among the top 20 in the world and owns nine of the top 21 regional shopping centres in the UK.

fuwad October 28th, 2010, 07:40 PM India’s Smaller Cities Show Off Growing Wealth
By LYDIA POLGREEN - The New York Times
Published: October 23, 2010
AURANGABAD, India — For decades this central Indian city was vintage old India: crumbling Mughal-era ruins and ancient Buddhist caves surrounded by endless parched acres from which farmers coaxed cotton.
A new residential development in Aurangabad, a city of 1.2 million people. As the small city’s fortune’s have grown, cultural mores that once made ostentatious spending unseemly have shifted.
But this month Aurangabad became an emblem of an altogether different India: the booming, increasingly urbanized economic powerhouse filled with ambition and a new desire to flaunt its wealth.
A group of more than 150 local businessmen decided to buy, en masse, a Mercedes-Benz car each, spending nearly $15 million in a single day and putting this small but thriving city on the map. Frustrated that the usual Chamber of Commerce brochures were slow to attract new investment, the businessmen decided to buy the cars as a stunt intended to stimulate investment in Aurangabad, one of several largely unknown but thriving urban centers across India’s more prosperous states.
“In and around Aurangabad there are companies worth a thousand crores,” an amount of Indian rupees equivalent to about $225 million, said Sachin Nagouri, 40, a hyperkinetic local real estate mogul who came up with the idea. “But Aurangabad is not known even in this state. There is plenty of money here. We just need to show it.”
Economists and government officials have long acclaimed India’s so-called second-tier cities as new founts of prosperity and incubators of India’s growing middle class. Cities like Pune, a manufacturing and information technology hub a few hours outside of Mumbai, and Ahmadabad, the biggest city in India’s wealthiest state, Gujarat, have shown that smaller cities can attract big business.
But now even smaller cities in some of India’s most prosperous states are booming, too. Coimbatore, a city of about one million in Tamil Nadu near India’s southern tip, has expanded from textile manufacturing to software development and making auto parts.
Aurangabad, with 1.2 million people and a stable base of automotive assembly plants, factories and agribusiness, has long attracted the attention of companies selling small appliances, cellphones and economy cars. But as the city’s fortunes have grown, and cultural mores that once made ostentatious spending unseemly have shifted, companies selling luxury goods are also seeking out these newly flush consumers. A sprawling new mall just opened here, as well as new multiplex theaters and luxury hotels.
“The story of Aurangabad is the story of India,” said Debashish Mitra, head of sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz in India. “There are many cities like Aurangabad, where Indians have money but were not indulging in luxury; they were always in a saving mode. But now that is changing. People want to spend, and feel they deserve luxury.”
That certainly describes Mr. Nagouri, Aurangabad’s answer to Donald Trump. He has made a fortune buying and developing land in highly leveraged deals. He lives in a sprawling modern house kitted out with Italian marble floors and designer sofas. Four cars sit in his driveway, including the latest, a gleaming white Mercedes sedan with buttery chocolate leather seats.
He was working out at the gym one day last spring with a friend, he said, when the idea for the group purchase of the luxury cars struck him. Perhaps, he wondered, if they could get enough people together they could generate publicity for the city. It started with a core group of 20 friends, but as word got out the number quickly grew. Eventually more than 150 businessmen signed up, most of them in their 30s and early 40s like Mr. Nagouri.
These men could not be more different from their cautious fathers, who stashed every penny as a hedge against an uncertain future in India’s economy, which until 1991 was heavily controlled by the government. In the land of Gandhi and the birthplace of Buddhism, grand displays of material wealth are still frowned upon.
Older men like Ashish Garde, who runs Nirlep, a company that has made nonstick pots and pans here since 1968, declined to join the group. Mr. Garde said the nearly $15 million spent on luxury cars would have been better spent on investments in industries that would create jobs or donations to charity. He declared himself satisfied with his economy car.
“Those of us who went through the hardships of the past know the value of money in a different way,” Mr. Garde said. “Those who get quick money, their relationship is different. After globalization things happen very easily. The element of struggle is gone.”
Mr. Nagouri’s family once had a small fortune in land holdings, but his father, a university lecturer, made a bad bet on a spring factory that went bankrupt.
“We had no money even to take a bus,” he said.
In the 1980s Mr. Nagouri got a job as a clerk in a construction company and spent six years studying how the business worked. He made a bit of money on the side selling sand and bricks. Eventually he struck out on his own, borrowing $2,000 from friends and relatives to build a small apartment building. He said he sold it almost immediately. “I understood the gimmick,” he said.
Not everyone is cheering Aurangabad’s new ostentatious wealth.
Sanjeev Unhale, a local antipoverty activist and journalist, said that the money spent for the luxury cars could have gone a long way to help those left behind by Aurangabad’s boom. The Marathwada region, of which Aurangabad is the capital, is cursed with perpetual droughts. Cotton farmers often assume huge debts to stay in business. Suicides by debt-ridden farmers are common, Mr. Unhale said. India’s economy may be nearing double-digit growth, but the wealth is not widely shared, and hundreds of millions live on $2 a day.
“Mercedes is for luxury,” he said. “It is not the manner in which we should show our mettle. We should show it in the genius and quality of what we produce.”
The desire to flaunt new wealth, however, is a natural part of India’s economic trajectory, said Ashutosh Varshney, a Brown University professor who has studied the social dimensions of India’s economic rise.
“It does show the burst of ambition in the small towns of booming states,” Mr. Varshney said. “It is, deep down, a drive for recognition, an impulse known to be sociologically and psychologically important when those lower down rise.”
Pramod Khairnar Patil, a local builder who bought a Mercedes, said entrepreneurs like him deserved to enjoy their wealth. Initially he had planned to buy the least expensive model, which sells for about $50,000, but his daughter persuaded him to upgrade, which nearly doubled the cost.
“It’s more expensive, but we should step ahead,” he said.
Mr. Patil has seen Aurangabad’s fortunes rise since he started out as a builder in 1990. Where he once built claustrophobic one-bedroom apartments for aspiring middle-class families, today he puts up airy townhouses and bungalows.
“People’s dreams are changing,” he said.
His own fortunes have grown, too. When his father built the modest house in which Mr. Patil lives, it did not occur to him that he needed more than one parking space. At that time owning even a single car was a distant dream. Now he has a problem deciding whether to park his sport utility vehicle or his shiny new Mercedes in the driveway.
“Times have changed,” he said. “The things that were luxury initially now are the need of the time.”

Posted: Sat Oct 23 2010, 23:40 hrs
Aurangabad: Express News Service
The state’s first eco-industrial area would come up in Aurangabad soon and the work will start in 2-3 months. Minister of State for Industries and Environment Sachin Ahir, here to attend some social functions, said, “The plan has been approved by cabinet and will be executed within 2-3 months. Only eco-friendly projects will get a place in this industrial area.”
He said, “We can’t predict how long it will take to complete the project.” “Our industrial policy stresses promotion of eco-friendly units and we are coming up with new ideas,” he said. Old units in Aurangabad MIDC will also be upgraded to meet pollution norms, he added.
He also said the state government had revised its policy of acquiring land for expansion of industrial areas. The state will not acquire agriculture land but will opt for barren land. State will not put pressure on people for land acquisition. Ahir said 15 per cent share of developed land will have to go to the owner.
Ahir, who also visited the newest landmark in town, the Prozone Aurangabad Shopping Centre, said malls can offer tremendous job opportunities to local people as the retail sector needs minimum skills. He said shopping centres should thus be promoted across the state.

fuwad November 22nd, 2010, 04:39 PM 101 BMWs booked in one day in Aurangabad
Associated Press Nov 22, 2010
Aurangabad: History was created on Sunday in Aurangabad when the young entrepreneurs including builders, industrialists, doctors and other professionals booked 101 BMW cars in a single day.
Pankaj Agrawal, one of the young industrialists said that the reason behind the mass booking was to put the name of their city in front of the world along with availing group discounts.
"The main aim of making a group of 101 BMW was that by doing so we would receive good support from the company, there would be quantity discount which is not possible individually. And the most important thing is that …Aurangabad would be known on a word level. These were our main intentions behind this group booking," said Agrawal.
He further added that Aurangabad city has a lot of hidden potential which is now being unleashed.
"There is lot of potential in Aurangabad city which was hidden till now. Now everybody is unleashing those potentials," said Agrawal.
This is the second time that the city's businessmen have become part of a record automobile deal. Earlier this year on October 14, 150 Mercedes cars were purchased in Aurangabad in a single day.

Chopper service was launched on December 14. (price per hour Rs.60,000)
Taking a cue from the recent bulk order for 150 Mercedes-Benz cars at one go, VVIP Aviation Pvt Ltd, a Delhi-based private aviation company, today announced launch of its multi-city chopper service in Aurangabad.
Briefing reporters here, the company chairman, Suresh Chavhanke, said for one month, the helicopter would be parked at the Chikalthana airport and would be shifted to the company franchisee, the Pune-based Manas Thakor's five-acre piece of land near the airport. Manas Thakor would look after the helicopter operations in the town.
The light helicopter does not require much of a space or a special facility for its landing, as it can land on a terrace of a building or on a lawn, he said.
The service can be extended to the foreign tourists willing to use the helicopter to save a bigger amount of time that they have to spend while travelling by road.
Many industrialists, business people and political big wigs need helicopter service. They have to bring in helicopters from Pune and Mumbai, whenever required, and pay more the flying hours, he added.

chetan_expert February 10th, 2011, 04:59 AM Hero Honda looks beyond north, eyes Maharashtra
India's largest two-wheeler maker Hero Honda is learnt to be in talks with Maharashtra government to set
up a large manufacturing base in Aurangabad. This would be Hero Honda's first facility outside north India
and is being perceived as a step towards improving its show in the western markets where Bajaj Auto,
India's second-biggest two-wheeler maker and main rival, has its main
base.
Hero Honda, which recently ended its joint venture with Japan's Honda,
plans to buy 800 acres in Aurangabad in the estate of the Maharashtra
Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), sources said. "Hero Honda
has got the government sanction on February 1 for the same. The
company may set up a manufacturing unit in Aurangabad," a person
close to the development said.
HT could not independently verify the price of the 800 acres in the
Aurangabad MIDC or the total investment the company plans. However,
a person involved in the development said, "One condition for Hero Honda would be to recruit at least 30%
locals in the factory."
The company had approached Maharashtra authorities for its facility, sources said.
A company spokesperson neither denied nor confirmed the development. "We are yet to take a final
decision on the location of our proposed fourth plant as we are still evaluating various locations. Therefore,
it is premature to share our capacity plans and quantum of investment at this time," a spokesperson said in
an emailed response to a questionnaire sent by HT.
Hero Honda with its three plants and 5.5 million annual production capacity needs more factories to
address emerging demand. The company, which has sold 4.4 million two-wheelers in the last 10 months, is
operating at full capacity. It currently has three manufacturing plants in north India and has been eyeing a
fourth one.

THE DEAL MAKER Sachin Nagori, 41, is a first-generation real estate developer
S achin Nagori won’t forget the occasion in a hurry. It isn’t often that an unknown businessman in distant Aurangabad is chased by The New York Times or The Times of India for an interview. Or have Wilfried Aulbur, the then managing director of Mercedes Benz India, drop by at his house.
In October 2010, Nagori had pulled off a coup. He persuaded 151 businessmen to buy a premium luxury symbol: A Mercedes Benz car. By using their collective bargaining power, Nagori managed to extract a hefty 20 percent discount from the German carmaker. The bulk sale made its way into record books as the largest number of vehicles sold in a single day in a city, turning Nagori into an instant celebrity. In a small town like Aurangabad, the news spread like wild-fire, catching almost everybody’s imagination. And that included Pankaj Agrawal, another businessman in search of fame.
A first-generation entrepreneur, Agrawal owns an LG Shoppe home electronics department store and a Bajaj Auto dealership in Aurangabad. He has a large home on one of Aurangabad’s arterial roads and owns two cars. Agrawal decided a luxury car would be more befitting for his status in society. And what better than an imported sports car, the BMW M6?
By November, Agrawal had lined up some interested buyers so he too could negotiate a bulk deal. Aurangabad had no luxury car dealerships, so he approached the nearest one in Pune. He lured BMW into doing a road show and by the end of it, Agrawal was all over the national media, taking credit for masterminding the sale of 101 BMW cars in Aurangabad — though there was no contract with BMW yet.
That’s when BMW got a shocker. Close to 40 customers at its dealership in Pune called in to cancel their bookings. They wanted discounts similar to what BMW had been offering customers in Aurangabad. Senior executives at the car maker went into a huddle and decided that it made no sense to support bulk deals. “I consider the sale of 101 cars like this as the starting point of brand erosion. If I agree to the unreasonable discounts that the group asks for, the dealer will not make any profit, we will not make any profit and also anyone else who does not get the discount will heavily complain. What I sell to people is not a product, but a dream,” says Andreas Schaaf, president, BMW India. Over the next few days, the company called off negotiations. Agrawal lost face. And Aurangabad’s second tryst with fame turned into a farce.
Yet despite losing the sale, the key lesson hasn’t been lost on BMW’s German president. “Aurangabad is a good example where nobody had that city on his landscape, but it had the potential. Obviously, people have the buying power to buy premium luxury cars. And the consequence out of this whole thing is that as BMW, we have to speed up our dealer network sales,” says Schaaf. For starters, BMW has already sold 20 cars in the city and is looking at shortly setting up its service station in Aurangabad.
On the face of it, Aurangabad’s rather dramatic entry on India’s consumer map may seem a bit contrived. For all the conspicuous consumption, there’s plenty that’s remained the same, especially the deep sense of community among its residents.
Spread over a radius of about 8 kilometres, Aurangabad has a population of about 1.4 million. Traffic is minimal, the roads are barely motorable and the errant traffic sense of its residents is no different than in any other Tier II town.
It isn’t until you hit the town’s southern side that you come face-to-face with the new wealth: A stretch of sprawling bungalows dotting the streets. Jalna Road, an arterial road that connects the city, is the nerve centre. Practically everything is located in and around this stretch. The evidence of prosperity and change are clearly visible; from the four-month-old 800,000 sq ft Prozone mall, which is the largest and only mall in the city, to dealerships of automobile brands like Skoda, Nissan and Maruti Suzuki and eateries and hotels like the Taj and Lemon Tree.
In the last five years, the city has morphed well beyond its status as Maharashtra’s tourism capital into a hotbed of industrial activity, primarily led by the automobile and engineering cluster. In more recent times, the growth has been spurred by agriculture and real estate development. Cotton farming has grown in the surrounding villages. Farmers have thrived thanks to cotton prices hovering at an all time high of around Rs. 4,500 per quintal. Residential real estate prices have zoomed. Properties were valued at around Rs. 20 lakh an acre in areas like Nashik Road, Old Bombay Road and Beed Road in 2006. Prices have risen five times in the last four years.

THE FLASH MOB Auto dealer Rahul Pagariya (second from right). A Strong sense of community seeps though town's consumerist culture
Back in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Aurangabad was a typical Marathwada town. People were primarily into agriculture and industry mainly comprised local units in textiles, silver and gold handicrafts, which were sold to eager tourists. The creation of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in the late ’80s saw the arrival of big business houses like Bajaj Auto and Garware.
Gradually, as people started making money from the industries that sprouted up, they quickly realised that they could piggyback on the industrial growth. It also helped that other big cities like Mumbai and Pune became increasingly crowded for companies. Some set up ancillary manufacturing units and others opted for dealerships. “Eventually even the software companies started coming in; the business process outsourcing companies are already here like Birla and Vodafone. They have about 2,000 to 2,500 employees and these companies always take young people who are mostly very optimistic and they want to grow fast. So you can see that the city is growing in that fashion,” says Makrand Deshpande, director, human resources at Skoda Auto India. Deshpande who studied in Aurangabad has seen the city change over the last 30 years.
The change has seeped into the surrounding villages too. Farmers have started giving up farming. Many have sold their land and moved to the town. Their kids have used their education to get better jobs in adjacent manufacturing and service industries. There’s a new builders lobby taking shape in the city. Last November, Pagariya Auto, a Maruti Suzuki dealer, sold 10 Altos in a nondescript village called Karmad. “They all came in one after the other. Cotton prices are at an all time high and the prices of land in the interior parts of Marathwada have shot up. So these people have a lot of cash and they want to spend,” says Rahul Pagariya, director, Pagariya Auto.
This explosion of new wealth is leading to a significant explosion in lifestyle. To begin with, the town had very few leisure and entertainment options. Five years ago, Cannought was the only super market and Nirala Bazaar was the only place where you could buy clothes and basic consumer durables. “People who needed a lifestyle went to Pune, which is a four-hour drive from here. So there was a lot of latent demand. And then everything changed with the opening up of Big Bazaar, which was followed by More,” says Deshpande.
Individualism, the leitmotif of consumption in big cities like Mumbai, is still missing in Aurangabad. A strong sense of community seeps through the town’s consumerist culture. There’s no better example of it than Sachin Nagori.

Straight Up Real estate prices have risen five times in four years
Nagori, 41, is a first-generation real estate developer who couldn’t complete his education because his family was in a severe debt crisis. His father was a lecturer who thought it would be a good idea to sell some family property and set up a factory to manufacture automobile springs. The venture didn’t take off. The family was displaced. “That brought us to an extraordinarily bad shape. We had to sell our house and started living in a rented house at Rs. 800 per month,” says Nagori. For the next five years, he apprenticed at a local builder’s office, at times working for more than 18 hours a day doing small chores. At 25, he started a bricks and sand trading business and slowly over the years started developing properties. In 2005, he arrived on the city’s who’s who list with the Aurangabad Business Center, a 100,000 sq feet complex, which has become one of the city’s premium commercial properties.
The clout he wields is immense — and Nagori’s bulk buying spree isn’t an aberration. As things turn out, this town has a thing for doing things together. In August 2009, when Nagori and his close friends decided to take a holiday in Goa, they formed a group; of friends and friends of friends. Close to hundred people came on board and they chartered a Kingfisher flight to Goa. Again, early in January 2010 when a few people wanted to visit Shirdi, they formed a group. Even movie-watching is a community affair. Every time a new movie releases in town, they come in large groups with their family, friends and relatives to watch the movie.
“We still hunt in packs. The whole thing of mental construct of nuclear family is fine, but people here do things together. When special food is cooked, it does make its way to the neighbour’s home. In our minds, we are still living in mohallas. People still enjoy doing the small things together,” says Damodar Mall, director, food strategy, Future group.

SHOPAHOLICS The mall prozone gets more than 20000 visitors a day
As a result, Big Bazaar, located on Jalna Road and one of the first retail outlets to set up shop, does not have the clean straight aisles of a typical Western supermarket. “The design allowed more people to talk, discuss and then decide, unlike in the West. And the customer is doing nothing but getting another pair of senses along with him,” says Mall. The idea was to make it look like a value and bargaining place. And almost on cue, customers invariably ask for discounts. Mall says he finds the highest level of bargaining in the Swiss watch counter. “It is not that the average Indian consumer is out there to splurge. The intent to extract value is still very strong,” he adds.
On October 8, five minutes away from Big Bazaar, Prozone opened its doors to the public. Spread over 8 million sq ft, it was the first and continues to be the only mall in Aurangabad developed in a joint venture between Provogue and Capital Shopping Centers Group of UK. And Vikrant Misra was in for a big surprise. Misra, a senior manager in charge of special projects has been a part of the startup team which set up Prozone. Quite a few people who visited the mall would take off their shoes before entering the premises. “These people had never visited a clean, big place like this before and frankly we were shocked and really worried to see this because we thought somebody might get hurt,” he says. In fact, in the first 10 days when the mall opened, says Misra, he spotted two Bentleys in the parking lot. “You could see that people had money here and they are coming to the mall to spend,” he adds.
Today, Prozone gets more than 20,000 footfalls in a single day. Retailers who have set shop in the premises, like Shoppers Stop, Levi’s, United Colors of Benetton, Puma and Reebok among many others, weren’t expecting anything like this. In fact, Shoppers Stop is seeing more footfalls in its Aurangabad store as compared to some of its Mumbai stores. “The mall is packed and our expectations have been vindicated by a huge margin. Seeing the demand we are now opening a bowling alley, a Sports Bar and a Satyam Cineplex in the complex,” says Misra.
This is in stark contrast to the days when Misra first came to Aurangabad in 2008 to do a feasibility study. “It was a lonely kind of place with people hardly going out and spending a lot of time either at home or watching a movie. The whole time I kept wondering: Will these people come to my mall to buy stuff and how on earth will I convince retailers to come here?” he says. That whole impression changed when Misra’s local driver took him to Jalna, about 40 km from Aurangabad. “I found a BMW or Mercedes parked in almost every house in Jalna and I was pleasantly surprised. I researched the place and found that Jalna is one of the biggest steel hubs in India. And those people had money and would go all the way to Mumbai and Pune to shop,” says Misra.
Deshpande agrees that spending habits have changed. “If you see Prozone then at one point in time there are more than 5,000 people in the mall. Anybody going to that place will not come back without spending. You spend at least Rs. 1,000 buying stuff for kids or on food,” he says. The hotel or eatery business is booming. Deshpande says that it is difficult to find a place at any decent restaurant in the evenings. “There is no place to sit. Even in pure vegetarian restaurants you have to wait for 10 minutes in the queue,” he adds.
The changing composition of Aurangabad’s society may be behind much of the new shopping and leisure pursuits. Nearly 65 percent of the urban population is under 35 years of age. And an increasing number of people are coming in from outside to settle in the city. “To reach anywhere in Aurangabad, from one end to other, it takes about 20 minutes by road. It is a simpler lifestyle clubbed with new opportunities which is drawing people. And in the bigger companies like Bajaj, Endurance or Varroc, you will find that there are at least 30 percent people from outside who have come to work and live here,” adds Deshpande.
For marketers looking to ride the consumption wave in small town India, Aurangabad could well become the test case for understanding India’s new middle class consumer.
