snow is red September 2nd, 2008, 08:50 PM Key Bund project goes underground
2008-9-2
THE building of a 7.8-kilometer tunnel, a key section of the massive reconstruction project at the Bund, will begin next year and will be completed in 2010.
According to the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co, the section will connect the exit to the Yan'an E. Tunnel in the Pudong New Area and extend eastwards along Pudong Avenue to the Jinqiao area.
There will be nine ramps to the tunnel, four for entry and five for exit. With two ramps to Yincheng Road M. and the Lujiazui area, vehicles can take different routes to the offices and tourist attractions in the commercial zone and the project will ease traffic congestion.
Other ramps will lead to Pudong's Rongcheng Road, Fushan Road, Taolin Road, Minsheng Road, Luoshan Road, and Jinqiao Road.
The tunnel will pass several Metro Lines including lines 2, 4 and 14. "One ramp at the Lujiazui area is only 1.5 meters away from tunnel of Metro Line 2," said Lin Qingquan, a chief engineer of the project.

That's the bad thing about Shanghai Daily, they never post pictures in their report, at least China daily got some decency to do it.

I hope this report will somehow clear some confusions, although still with no map
A VEHICLE tunnel will soon be built that will link Lujiazui in Pudong with Puxi and hopefully ease one of Shanghai's worst traffic-jam areas.
The tunnel-construction firm said yesterday that the passage would connect the Pudong end of Yan'an Road Tunnel, run under the Huangpu River and Jinqiao Road and come out in the Jinqiao Export Processing Zone.
The 7.8-kilometer end result will be called the East-West Passage Tunnel and will comprise a vast, inter-connected underground system.
Some roads in Lujiazui and nearby areas, as well as two other tunnels for vehicles that travel under the Huangpu River, would also be connected to the East-West Passage with entrance and exit ramps, said the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co Ltd, builder of the project.
Drivers heading for and leaving the Lujiazui area would enjoy many more choices, said Lin Qingquan, chief engineer of the project.
"We believe the future underground tunnel in Pudong will also free the Yan'an Road Tunnel from the terrible congestion in rush hours,'' Lin said yesterday.
Preparatory work for digging the tunnel began in February, including relocating residents living along the route and removing underground infrastructure pipes.
Two temporary ramps are being built beside the Pudong end of the Yan'an Road Tunnel. When completed, these ramps will be used by vehicles to enter and leave the Yan'an Road Tunnel from the Pudong side, while the opposite end will close for construction.
"A major step of the project is to connect the Pudong end of the tunnel at ground level with the future passage underground,'' Lin said.
Between the connection point with the Yan'an Road Tunnel and the end in the Jinqiao zone, the underground passage will have five exits and four entrances, linking it with major roads in Lujiazui and nearby areas in Pudong.
The Renmin Road Tunnel and the Xinjian Road Tunnel, both running under the Huangpu River, would receive renovations to their Pudong ends and be connected to the future passage, Lin said.
Yincheng Road, the core area of Lujiazui, Rongcheng Road, Taolin Road, Minsheng Road, Luoshan Road and Jinqiao Road will all be linked to the underground access after the ramps are built.
The Yan'an Road Tunnel services nearly 100,000 vehicles every day, causing serious traffic congestion.
Digging of the tunnel was scheduled to start at the end of this year but it was still uncertain whether the tunnel would be ready in time for 2010 World Expo, officials said.
Six stations and tracks for the planned Metro Line 14 would be built directly below the level of the underground vehicle tunnel, engineers said.
They said the East-West Passage Tunnel presented a major design problem as a future ramp on it leading to the core of Lujiazui would be only 1.5 meters from the tunnel shell of the Metro Line 2 underground passage.
"We are still studying different approaches on how to best tackle this challenge,'' Lin told Shanghai Daily.

snow is red September 23rd, 2008, 10:34 PM Battered economy trims pace of progress on infrastructure
2008-9-24
A TIGHTENING economy is putting great pressure on local authorities to finish the city's major infrastructure projects on schedule, local government officials said yesterday.
Many of these projects are needed to improve transport and basic city services for the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.
During a meeting yesterday, city officials urged the companies and government departments working on these efforts to address the challenges and speed up construction. Local government plans to invest 122.4 billion yuan (US$18 billion) this year on construction efforts ranging from new roads to improvements to the water system.
Officials confirmed some projects are alarmingly behind schedule mainly as the result of economic factors, including increasing material costs.
Officials said that in June, for instance, the market price of reinforcing steel bars rose 61 percent, sand jumped 53 percent and concrete increased 18 percent.
Uncertainty in the global financial markets and the country's previous efforts to tighten credit are also causing difficulties in obtaining financing to fund the projects.
In addition, increasing complaints from residents living near construction sites are contributing to the slowdown, officials said.
Some operations have been suspended because of complaints about noise, traffic jams and ground subsidence.
City officials said yesterday they have completed only 49 percent of the construction work planned for this year, based on spending levels.
At the same time last year, 76 percent of the planned construction tasks had been finished.
The urban engineering authority said yesterday it has begun to install sound barriers at 900 spots that have received the most noise complaints.
These stretches cover 763 kilometers along the Outer Ring Road, the Middle Ring Road, other expressways, the elevated train line and some major bridges.
The city has also started efforts to remove 403 kilometers of elevated cables in 10 downtown districts and place them underground to prepare for the World Expo, officials said yesterday.

This is really great news. The fact that Shanghai has overhead cables in many pats makes it resemble a North American city. Good to know that it is going the "Euro way" with underground cables.
snow is red October 29th, 2008, 01:17 AM Shanghai port activity runs deep
2008-10-29
THE Yangshan Deep Water Port is full steam ahead and on track for Shanghai's goal of making the city an international shipping hub.
The project's developer plans more auxiliary facilities and value-added businesses.
Phase III-B, the final phase of the project's main northern development, is due to be operational this December, bringing the port's annual designed handling capacity to 9.3 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) with 16 berths.
Construction on the project's new western section would start next year and the section would be gradually put into use from 2010 through 2013, said Liu Zuoliang, chairman of the Shanghai Tongsheng Investment Group, which started to develop the deep water port in 2002.
The western development will include 10 to 12 berths in relatively shallower water, with designed annual capacity of 7 million TEUs.
"We don't want to start them too hastily, as current capacity expansion can meet demand growth, which has shown signs of easing," Liu told reporters yesterday.
He said that while the northern section's design capacity was 9.3 million TEUs, this could be expanded to between 12 million and 15 million TEUs.
The port handled 6.09 million TEUs in the first nine months, and is expected to handle 8.5 million TEUs for the whole year. This compares to the full-year government forecast of 28.5 million TEUs for the whole of Shanghai.
Liu said his company would open a ferry center in the western extension, and further develop logistics, processing, tourism and other infrastructure in the northern area.
The port, connected to Shanghai by the Donghai Bridge, also plays a key role to ensure the city's energy supplies. An area has been developed that serves as an energy port, housing liquefied natural gas receiving facilities and refined oil storage tanks.
The LNG facilities are expected to receive the first cargo of clean fuel from Malaysia early next year.

THE main structure of the underground Renmin Road Tunnel's northern passage was completed yesterday, the construction team said.
The Renmin Road Tunnel starts at the junction of Renmin Road and Huaihai Road E. and will run to the junction of Yincheng Road E. and Yincheng Road S. in Pudong. It is due to open around the end of next year.
Digging of the northern passage under the Huangpu River began in February.
The tunnel is expected to divert traffic from the Yan'an Road Tunnel, which is currently heavily congested.
The tunnel will be just over 3 kilometers long. The section under the Huangpu River is 1,470 meters long.
When completed, the tunnel will be key to the Bund's underground traffic network. Together with the Xinjian Road Tunnel, which is also under way, the Renmin Road Tunnel will connect with underground traffic and access the central part of the Bund, the shipping-trade center at the northern Bund and the Lujiazui financial zone.

snow is red November 23rd, 2008, 11:09 AM Tunnel digging ready on the Bund
2008-11-20
DIGGERS are ready to start an underground passage that will run down the Bund alongside the Huangpu River, as a key stage of the city's underground traffic reconstruction project.
One of the country's biggest diggers has been transported to the scene to be tested. It is planned to start operating underground before end of the year, according to the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co, one of the project operators.
The infrastructure project will transform the Bund. After it opens, most traffic through the area will be run underground while pedestrians are given a larger, quieter space alongside the Huangpu River.
The project also involves making use of the underground spaces below the Shiliupu Dock at the south of the Bund, which will be used for car parking space, shops and restaurants, and a bus terminal.
When the project is completed and opens in March of 2010, there will only be four car lanes at ground-level on the Bund, reduced from 11 lanes in the past.

FANS of traditional thrill rides will be happy to learn that China's first wooden roller coaster is now being built in Happy Valley theme park in Songjiang District.
The 86-hectare park will become the biggest in eastern China region when it opens in July next year, according to Songjiang District government.
Happy Valley, located inside the Sheshan National Tourism Resort, will be 10 times bigger than the downtown's Jingjiang Amusement Park, according to its investor, Shenzhen-based OCT Properties Co Ltd. Chain parks of the same name have opened in Shenzhen, Beijing and Chengdu since 1998.
Installation of seven of the park's 10 major amusements has started or nearly finished, according to the project operator.
The wooden roller coaster will run on a 1,200-meter steel-rail circuit laid on a wooden track, and rise to a height of nearly 33 meters. The other thrill machines include a "Space Shuttle" that sends riders 60 meters into the sky in two seconds.
The park will also offer carnival games and other leisure facilities, including a 4,500-seat theater.
Visitors will be able to reach the park via Metro Line 9 and a free shuttle bus.
Happy Valley Park is only one of the tourism projects that are being developed in the Sheshan National Travel Resort. The others include the 210-hectare Chenshan National Botanical Park, which will feature more than 25,000 species of plants. The first phase of the botanical park will open next year.

snow is red November 28th, 2008, 12:24 AM Watergate bridge to be demolished
2008-11-28
THE Wusong Road Watergate Bridge will be demolished next August as part of the Bund traffic renovation program, the city construction administration said yesterday.
The overpass running across Suzhou Creek, built in 1991, would be removed to re-introduce an open view of the riverside strip, construction officials told a delegation of members of the Shanghai committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference yesterday.
Local members of China's top advisory body are visiting to investigate the development of the city's key infrastructure projects and industries.
Officials said when the traffic construction program was completed, the Bund area would be regenerated, with most of its space given over for pedestrians and tourists.
The landscape and skyline along the Bund would be improved with the demolition of ''inharmonious'' buildings, such as the Watergate Bridge, as well as an improved road design, they said.
The Bund would also be largely covered with plants to provide a pleasant environment.
''In the future, there will be only two car lanes on the ground level of the Bund and they will only open to tourist buses,'' said an official with the construction administration.
Traffic capacity
The main elements of the Bund traffic program include the construction of a multi-level underground passage system along the Bund to connect to Zhongshan Road S. and Wusong Road, as well as two vehicle tunnels running across the Huangpu River to reach Pudong.
Work will be finished before the World Expo in 2010.
The project aims to boost traffic capacity in the Bund area, long troubled by rush-hour congestion.
The main part of the underground passage along the Bund will be 3,720 meters long and allow six lanes of traffic on each level.
Construction of the Xinjian Road and Renmin Road tunnels, other key steps in the Bund project, were progressing smoothly, according to city officials.
Nearly 100 digging machines are running underground on the city's massive tunnel and Metro projects. Some CPPCC members raised concerns over the working conditions of the large number of engineers and migrant workers on the projects.
They urged the company and industry watchdog to ensure there was enough ventilation in the underground sites, improve working conditions and increase health checks for the workers.
Meanwhile, builders of Metro Line 7, which will be a key line for Expo visitors, said yesterday that they would ensure the interval between trains during the Expo period would be only five minutes.

snow is red December 5th, 2008, 05:42 PM Third phase of Yangshan Port completed
2008-12-05
SHANGHAI: The third-phase construction of Yangshan Deep Water Port was finished yesterday, expanding the annual throughput of the port to 9.3 million TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units), said an official with the project company.
Liu Zuoliang, chairman of Shanghai Tongsheng Investment Group and also the vice director of the port project, said the completed north part of Yangshan Port is equipped with 16 berths along a 5.6-kilometer waterfront.
Starting construction in June 2002, the Yangshan Port has become a new engine of development at the Shanghai Port, which has replaced Hong Kong as the world's second largest container port after Singapore.
Concerning the unfolding financial crisis, Liu admitted it had affected the port industry. "In the first 11 months this year, Yangshan Port's container handling capacity has increased 9 percent year-on-year, a sharp drop from the same time last year," said Liu.
In addition, shipping freight from Shanghai to Europe has slumped from $1,300 to $200 per container this year alone, Liu added.
However, Shanghai government is confident the current financial turbulence would not affect the construction plan of Yangshan Port, which will build 30 berths on a 10-kilometer waterfront, able to handle 15 million TEUs each year upon completion.
As early as 2009, construction of the port's west part will start, which will come into use gradually from 2010 through 2013.
According to Liu, the west part will include 10 to 12 berths, and have a designed capacity of 7 million TEUs.
"We will not slow the construction speed in the face of the temporary market slump, because we expect the Yangshan Port to bring Shanghai another economic boom," Liu said.

SHANGHAI started construction today on its first private-jet airport for small jets.
The Shanghai Airport Authority officially began work on the project at Hongqiao International Airport this morning. The private-jet airport will serve business jets.
The first phase of construction is based on demand of 6,000 flights annually.
The report said the authority is funding the project, but did not say how much the airport will cost.
A 3,000-square-meter terminal, a 5,000-square-meter hangar as well as a parking apron capable of serving three private jets will be completed in the second half of next year.
Shanghai's two civil airports – Pudong and Hongqiao – served about 2,000 private flights last year. Both airports are expected to serve 10 to 15 percent more private flights annually.
A joint company by the Shanghai Airport Authority and Australia-based Hawker Pacific Aerospace will be responsible for the new airport's daily operation.
It will also provide visitors to World Expo 2010 Shanghai more transport choices.

snow is red December 17th, 2008, 01:26 AM Pudong to have its 'People's Square'
2008-12-17
Century Metropolis, a 6-billion-yuan (US$876.4 million) complex of shops, offices and underground parking, dubbed as Pudong's "People's Square," started construction yesterday.
The project is part of Pudong New Area's plan to extend the Lujiazui area to the east to develop Zhangyang Road into a commercial zone.
Century Metropolis boasts a good road network with three main roads leading to it and has four intersecting Metro lines.
The complex will be enclosed by Dongfang Road, Zhangyang Road, Fushan Road and Weifang Road. It will cover about 90,000 square meters and be divided by Shiji Avenue into two triangle-shaped sections.
When completed, the complex will also be connected underground to Shiji Avenue Station, a major transport hub. Presently, Metro Line 2, 4 and 6 meet at the station.
In future, Line 9 will also be extended eastbound across the Huangpu River to connect to the station.
Construction of the first triangle-shaped section, the Century Metropolis 2-3 Parcel, was launched yesterday and will be completed in four years.
Lujiazui Financial Trade Zone Development Co and Bailian Group will invest 6 billion yuan to develop this section. Lujiazui Financial will develop the office buildings and Bailian will be responsible for the development of the shops.
According to the plan, a retail podium, five floors and part of the sixth floor to be used for auditoriums, is located in the northern part along Zhangyang Road, the shopping street.
Three office towers of more than 10 floors are located in the southern part close to Fushan Road and Shiji Avenue.
Offices will start from the second floor and the first floor is earmarked for retail businesses.
The other triangle-shaped section, to be developed by Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, will contain a 39-storey office building, a 23-floor hotel and will also have space for retail, restaurant, entertainment and cultural activities.
Pudong's gross domestic product rose 11.9 percent on year in the first half of this year, and it expected the growth rate to reach 11 percent for this year.

2008-12-27
SHANGHAI started work yesterday morning on the Chongming-Qidong Expressway, an important part of a regional project that will shorten travel time between Shanghai and the eastern Jiangsu Province by nearly half.
When it's finished in 2012, the expressway will link Chongming Island with Qidong, a coastal city in Shanghai's neighboring Jiangsu Province, the Shanghai Construction and Transport Commission said.
"The expressway is the first cross-river project in Jiangsu Province that directly connects to Shanghai from north of the Yangtze River," said He Ping, of the province's transportation authority.
It marks the final phase of the Shanghai-Chongming-Jiangsu connection that will link downtown Shanghai, Chongming Island and Jiangsu Province with a series of bridges, tunnels and highways.
"The expressway will play a crucial role for Jiangsu, and even Shandong Province, to connect to Shanghai, especially to the Pudong International Airport, Yangshan Deep Water Port and Waigaoqiao Port in Pudong," said Dai Xiaojian, general manager of the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel-Bridge Construction and Development Co Ltd.
The six-lane Chongming-Qidong Expressway, spanning 51.2 kilometers, will merge into the Yangtze Tunnel-Bridge Project on Chongming Island, and stretch north to connect to the Nantong-Qidong Expressway, which will further extend to Nantong city in Jiangsu.
The Yangtze Tunnel-Bridge Project, which will open before the 2010 World Expo, will link Pudong New Area and Chongming Island via Changxing Island. The tunnel-bridge project, the world's longest such complex, extends 25.5 kilometers, with a tunnel running under the Yangtze River and a cable-stayed bridge over the water.
About 70 percent of the expressway, stretching 22.73 kilometers, will be built on Chongming Island, passing through ecologically sensitive forests and wetlands.
An 8.4-kilometer bridge will link Chongming and Qidong. When the new link opens, the drive from downtown Shanghai to Qidong is expected to take about one hour, as the distance will be cut to 80 kilometers, from the present 200. The trip takes now about 150 minutes.
"Qidong is a large place for development. It will benefit Shanghai's aim to transfer some of its industries to outside cities," Dai said.
Land prices and other costs in Qidong are reportedly lower than in other cities that are located within one hour of Shanghai.

snow is red December 28th, 2008, 06:52 AM Global sourcing center to rise
2008-12-27
SHANGHAI plans to invest 2 billion yuan (US$292 million) to build a transnational sourcing center to promote foreign trade and attract overseas purchasers to base here, the city government said yesterday.
Covering 130,000 square meters, Shanghai Transnational Sourcing Center will comprise an international exhibition center and two office buildings.
"It is a key step in building Shanghai into a platform for international sourcing as well as an international trade center," said Sha Hailin, deputy secretary general of the municipal government and director general of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce. "The annual International Sourcing Fair to be held in the center will gather together global buyers and lure more buyers to base in Shanghai."
The center is located at Changfeng Ecological Business Zone in Putuo District, a 2.2-square-kilometer business area earmarked for the service industry and one of the sites to house corporations' headquarters.
The business zone will consist of 1.5 million square meters of office building and commercial and entertainment facilities as well as 1.2 million square meters of high-end residential and serviced apartments.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc, an American media company, will build an entertainment center, which will be completed in 2010 before the World Expo, with a domestic property firm in the zone.

snow is red January 2nd, 2009, 04:49 AM Bumper year for city infrastructure
2008-12-31
SHANGHAI has begun 12 billion yuan (US$1.76 billion) worth of major infrastructure projects this year and will make an even bigger investment in public facilities next year, government officials said yesterday.
Shen Xiaosu, deputy director of the Shanghai Construction and Transport Commission, said some major projects previously scheduled to start after 2010 will be brought forward to start next year in an effort to boost domestic demand.
Shen said the city plans to invest even larger amounts in expanding the Metro system and the highways, plus projects to improve environmental conditions in Shanghai. The exact value of investment was not announced.
Construction of Shanghai's Metro Line 12 also started yesterday and is expected to go into operation in 2012, the city's Metro authority said.
The southwest-to-northeast line will have 31 stations, all underground, from Qixin Road in Minhang District to Jinhai Road in Pudong New Area.
Chen Qiwei, spokesman for the Shanghai municipal government, said the local government will carry out a subsidy package to ease employment pressure, which is expected to worsen next year due to the economic downturn.
Companies will be compensated for accepting formerly unemployed locals. Job seekers, especially college students, will be offered financial assistance for enrolling in vocational training programs.
Chen said the government has spent 525 million yuan on building homes for seniors this year and increased the city's capacity to nearly 80,000 beds catering for seniors.
That is still not enough, due to the vast numbers of elderly and aging residents, officials said.

Whiteeclipse January 20th, 2009, 07:30 AM Shanghai to build 120,000 flats under indemnificatory housing projects
Shanghai, the largest city in mainland China, will build 120,000 flats under its indemnificatory housing projects within two years, said Mayor Han Zheng in a Shanghai Municipal People's Government press conference on Jan.17, as reported in Shanghai Securities News.
The mayor noted that about 60,000 flats under the housing scheme started construction last year, totaling 4 million square meters, will be distributed in the second half of this year. In addition, it is estimated that approximately the same amount of housing will begin construction in 2009.
Last year, the trading volume of new housing in the Shanghai real estate market shrank by 42%, and the average selling price fell by 1.77% compared with that of the previous year.
In order to stimulate the market, a series of state- and local-level policies were enacted. According to the mayor, the real estate market has already responded positively in the period from the end of last December to early January this year

Whiteeclipse May 18th, 2009, 06:44 AM Shanghai to be the center for insurance innovation, official
The China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) signed a memorandum with the Shanghai municipal government Friday to build the country's financial hub into a center for insurance innovation as well as technology research and development.
The CIRC, or China's top insurance regulator, would launch pilot programs in Shanghai concerning insurance fund usage, said commission chairman Wu Dingfu.
"We will initiate more trial insurance policies in Shanghai in preparation for future application on a national scale," Wu said.
At present, the CIRC is mulling over a plan to introduce a new endowment insurance type to Shanghai residents that collect the premium before income tax is deducted.
This is compared with the current endowment insurance policy which requires individuals to pay the premium after turning in income tax.
The new product will rule the endowment insurance out of income tax and thus help individuals save money.
Once taken into action, the trial program would have unmeasurable influence on China's social security system as it encourage people to purchase endowment insurance for a more secured later life, according to Wu.
The CIRC also pledged to support the development of shipping insurance to contribute to Shanghai's ambition to develop into an international shipping center.
The State Council, or the Cabinet, unveiled a detailed plan at the end of April aimed at building Shanghai into a global financial center and shipping hub by 2020.

This is silly, big cities like Berlin or Hamburg are very accessible for all people. A harmonious society cannot exclude the elderly and handicaped.
Whiteeclipse August 17th, 2009, 06:31 AM Shanghai aims to be Asia Pacific logistics hub
Shanghai aims to become a logistics hub in the Asia Pacific region by 2011, according to a blueprint on the logistics industry released on Friday, the Shanghai Daily reported.
Under the stimulus plan, the city's logistics sector will grow of 10% annually and account for more than 13% of the city's GDP by 2011. In the meantime, the city will speed up the establishment of a logistics resource exchange center and set up public distribution centers to offer door-to-door logistics services focusing on agricultural products, medical equipment and medicine.
Manufacturers and logistics firms will also be encouraged to cooperate in the fight against the fallout from the economic crisis and to develop major logistics projects, according the plan.
Shanghai Vice Mayor Tang Dengjie said logistics services play an important role in every industry and are key to helping the city become an international financial and shipping hub.
Shanghai's logistics output rose 14.7% annually from 2006 to 2008 to RMB 179.4 billion, accounting for 13.1% of the city's GDP and 25.3% of the service industry's total.

Why, should disabled people just stay in their houses and not get in the way of 'normal' people in crowded places?!?!
No! Disabled people should have the right to go wherever they like just like the rest of us, and it's the job of city authorities to make it as easy for them to do so as possible! It's good this flyover seems to have lifts, all new developments like this should have them.

What I originally meant was that the juncture was not really accessible for the disabled even without a bridge (because some people hinted that the bridge was a hindrance for the disabled). I didn't say the disabled should stay home. I just said that the bridge without a lift was not an additional hindrance.
Haoting October 14th, 2009, 09:41 AM China builds 'Pentagon' shopping centre in Shanghai
A £150 million replica of the Pentagon is being built in China to house a Shanghai shopping centre.

The new shopping centre will be around 40 minutes from the centre of Shanghai by car
The Shanghai Pentagonal Mart is bigger than the Virginia headquarters of the US defence department, sprawling across over 70 acres, but it has a rather more mundane purpose.
When its doors open at the beginning of next year, it will be a shopping centre. The site is around 40 minutes from the centre of Shanghai by car.
"The project started in 2003," said a spokesman. "Construction started the following year and we are nearly finished. We are just sealing the roof."
He added: "The design of the project was inspired by the appearance of the Pentagon. This building is not only impressive externally, but it is actually a very smart design. The logistics mean that people can circulate freely inside."
The US Pentagon is said to have been designed so that employees can reach any office inside in under seven minutes on foot.
"We have signed thousands of tenants already, including a number of Western brands," said the spokesman, while declining to reveal the precise details of which clients had committed to floorspace.
Shanghai Megamall, the owner of the building, has had strong support from the local government in its vision, and has also managed to sign up the United Nations as one client.
The UN will place its procurement and logistics centre at the Shanghai Pentagon. Last year, the UN procured $1.8 billion (£1.13 billion) of goods made in China, including mobile homes, electrical equipment, telephones, furniture, vegetable oil and salt.
One anonymous Chinese internet user, on seeing pictures of the building, said: "Nice copy. Next up is Dubai's tallest building".

The West Bank project, formally known as the Oriental DreamWorks project, will occupy a nine-block area in the city's Xuhui District.
The cartoon studio is a joint investment by DreamWorks and stated-owned media firms.
The project will also involve local culture organizations such as Shanghai Film Group Corp, Shanghai Drama Art Center, Shanghai Conservation of Music and restaurants and bars, said Chen Chengquan, director of the Culture Bureau of Xuhui District, according to Xinhua news agency yesterday.

The bureau declined to reveal details of the project's timetable or the level of investment.
The project is an expansion of a DreamWorks investment project announced in February.
US company DreamWorks said it was to build the studio in a project called Oriental DreamWorks, a joint venture with China Media Capital and Shanghai Media Group and Shanghai Alliance Investment, an investment arm of the Shanghai government. With an initial investment of US$330 million, the studio would develop original Chinese animated and live-action movies, TV shows and other entertainment.

(Shanghai Daily, June 20)
SHANGHAI is to have its own film museum by the end of this year, officials said yesterday at the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Shen Yun, granddaughter of famous Chinese playwright and screenwriter Xia Yan, donated Xia's books, scripts and letters to the Shanghai Film Museum. Xia was the pseudonym of Shen Naixi.
Celebrated Chinese film director Wu Yigong donated the prize certificate of his film "My Memories of Old Beijing," which won the Best Feature Film award at the Manila International Film Festival in 1983.
"Shanghai, the cradle of Chinese film, has made great contributions to the domestic film industry," said Ren Zhonglun, president of Shanghai Film Group Corporation. "It has been a dream of several generations of local filmmakers to build a film museum in the city."
The museum is located at the original site of Shanghai Film Group Corp in the Xujiahui area and will open to public by year's end. It will feature exhibition halls covering 10,000 square meters, a 4D-theater that combines 3D film with synchronized effects and film studios that offer visitors simulated experiences of being a film director, an actor or a cameraman.

(Shanghai Daily, June 26)
THE first wholly Taiwan-funded hospital on the mainland opened in Shanghai today. It is the first Taiwan-owned hospital to benefit from the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) signed by mainland and Taiwanese authorities in 2010.
Shanghai Landseed International Hospital was built with 150 million yuan (US$23.81 million) from Taipei-based Landseed International Medical Group. It will mainly serve people from Taiwan, foreigners and local Chinese who demand better health services, the hospital said.
Previously, the mainland government only allows foreign companies to set up joint venture hospitals.
After the signing of ECFA, Taiwanese investors are allowed to set up wholly-owned hospitals in Shanghai and in cities of Fujian, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Hainan provinces. A similar pact known as Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement or CEPA, signed by mainland, Hong Kong and Macau authorities allows Hong Kong and Macau investors to set up wholly owned hospitals in Shanghai, Chongqing and the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan.
The Landseed Group has run the joint-venture Shanghai Chenxin Hospital since 2002.

(Shanghai Daily, June 28)
SHANGHAI Airport Authority told shareholders yesterday that Pudong International Airport Terminal 1 will undergo a major renovation this year to expand its retail space.
The board of the listed company agreed to invest 1.4 billion yuan (US$220 million) in the renovation project, said Jia Ruijun, vice president of Shanghai Airport Authority.
The project, slated to finish by 2014, will add 6,000 square meters of retail space to the terminal building.
Jia said it is part of their corporate strategy to "further develop non-aviation businesses," noting that revenue from the company's non-aviation businesses exceeded that from its aviation business last year.
The Pudong airport is also building its fourth and fifth runways to handle the increasing air traffic.

Lingang project to get 100b yuan in 3 years
(Shanghai Daily, July 14)
SHANGHAI will invest 100 billion yuan (US$15.7 billion) in the next three years on bettering public services and boosting upscale, high-tech and service-industry projects in its coastal Lingang New Town area, officials said yesterday.
The city is looking to Lingang New Town, a large project being built in the Pudong New Area, as a way to boost economic growth, a plenary session of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China was told.
The investment is to surpass the amount used in the past nine years to develop the Lingang zone, said Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng. The city will also try to attract companies that locate their R&D offices or sales operations in Shanghai, Yu said.

everywhere July 14th, 2012, 10:33 AM Disneyland with Chinese characteristics
(China Daily USA, July 14)
When the Shanghai Disney Resort opens in 2015, all the attractions will look amiable and adorable. But the process that helped create them was the product of creative opinions, challenges and discussions involving many different voices and backgrounds, including leading Chinese artists and designers.
More than 500 designers, or what Disney calls "imagineers", have worked for years to create the design concept for the first Disney resort on the Chinese mainland, in the hope of making the 3.9-square-kilometer resort 100 percent Disney, but with distinctive Chinese flavors.
For these Disney imagineers, who have already designed five Disney resorts, ensuring their designs are genuinely Disney is not as much of a challenge as ensuring Chinese elements and consumer tastes are appropriately considered and incorporated. To achieve that goal, the designers launched numerous focus groups and undertook countless field research trips to hear from audiences, and witness and experience Chinese culture firsthand.

Shanghai Bund International Financial Centre
Work has begun in Shanghai on the Foster + Partners and Thomas Heatherwick-designed Shanghai Bund International Financial Centre, building services consultant Mott
MacDonald confirmed today. The green project is comprised of a hotel, cinema, central plaza and retail mall over 420,000 sq m, with two commercial towers designed to
achieve LEED Gold certification. The complex as a whole has been designed in line with China Green Building Energy Standard credentials.
Speaking on today’s news, Mott MacDonald’s project manager, Cheng Jie, said: “This project is a great chance for Mott MacDonald to demonstrate its skills and knowledge in
China. Through multinational co-operation with our buildings team in the UK we have really been able to add value for our client. It is further progress for our business in
mainland China, where commercial developers are very active at this present time.”
In order to reach the highest possible levels of sustainability, building services have been largely confined to the basement levels to enable green roof systems to be
integrated into the design. This also allows for increased efficiency in the office spaces. Construction of the north plot is destined for completion in 2014 while the south side
should be fit for use by the end of 2015.

The Staggering Shanghai Groundscraper-Hotel Breaks Ground
The project we’re going to picture now is based on the principle of the “groundscraper”, developed, in part, by Le Corbusier, when he felled his skyscraper project at Chandigarh toppling it into the unstable abyss. Charles Jencks, in a slightly macabre way, called it “a skyscraper that has met a fate worse than death.”
The groundscraper idea is obvious in Constant’s New Babylon and Candilis and Wood’s 1964 1964 Berlin Free University project, before being reworked by Steven Holl. His name is also known for the “horizontal skyscraper” completed in Shenzhen during last year.
The Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland goes literally down into the earth, within an abandoned quarry at the foot of Tianmashan Mountain, around 45 km to the southwest of the city center. The challenge of building the 380-room luxury hotel, a significant part of the 428,000 sq meter theme park, was planned and designed by a British engineering brand named Atkins.
Out of its total of 19 stories, the building goes 16 stories deep, towards the floor of the quarry, as a graft on the side of the 100-meter deep pit. An underwater restaurant, a 10-meter-deep aquarium and an athletic complex designed for water sports are planned to reserve the two deepest stories.
Reportedly similar to a waterfall, a 60-meter tall curtain made of glass descends adjacently to the rockface. Extreme sports enthusiasts will feel at home here, because the surrounding cliffs are designed for rock-climbing and bungee jumping.
As the construction of this impressive park has begun, we found out that its costs have been estimated to a mind whopping $555 million, although they are expected to grow as the building process progresses. The hotel rooms will reportedly cost around $320 per night.
