View Full Version : Durban meet
dysan1 September 13th, 2009, 08:05 PM Guys after seeing the great effort made by the folks in Joburg to get together for the 3rd/4th time, i think its about time us coastal bums plan on doing the same...?
If any of you guys and gals are interested lets try to set something up, plans for where to go and the like
ToxicBunny September 13th, 2009, 08:39 PM Lekker... bring and come ek se :p
Has to be somewhere with a view tho... somewhere like say Coimbra in Dbn North...
dysan1 September 13th, 2009, 10:18 PM was thinking something more on the lines of actually going out there and seeing or doing something, but cafe ok...prob more centrally located i would think, not all live up in the north me thinks
ToxicBunny September 14th, 2009, 08:37 AM Oh I was also thinking of going out there and seeing things.... have to do that :)... its what we're all obsessed with.
But I was thinking a central "meeting" point, and possible after-meeting relaxing point for a few drinks.
Ron2K September 14th, 2009, 08:54 AM I'm keen, just a bit stuck for dates at the moment. Only date available to me this month is the public holiday on the 24; and the first and third weekends of October are out for me.
Durbsboi September 14th, 2009, 09:02 AM Let me know when & where its at, still trying for that tour too!
dysan1 September 14th, 2009, 05:04 PM towards the end of the month?
romanSA September 14th, 2009, 06:38 PM If I'm in the country, it will be a yes for me.
juzzy September 14th, 2009, 09:53 PM what about Durban international for the arrival of emirates...we can chill at the spur or pannarotti's and wait for the aircraft to pull up... 1st October...im there regardless
dysan1 September 14th, 2009, 11:22 PM Wont it still be during work hours? wat time is it arriving? that could be a plan hey and then use that as an opportunity to plan a secondary one
juzzy September 15th, 2009, 12:09 AM well it arrives at 17.10 and then departs again 18.40
Pule September 15th, 2009, 07:16 AM Guys why don't you meet were you will actually get us photos or is it just a meeting between Durban SSC guys.
ToxicBunny September 15th, 2009, 12:50 PM I was thinking along the same lines as Pule really..
A meeting at some place, then doing a bit of a tour around.... specifically for photos.
Leftfoot September 22nd, 2009, 09:11 PM Im interested, although Im from the bay it would be great to actually get down there and do see some of these awesome projects!....er.....and u guys of course!
dysan1 October 4th, 2009, 05:16 PM so we settling on a date??
ToxicBunny October 4th, 2009, 07:12 PM You set the date.. I'll make sure I'm there :D
dysan1 October 4th, 2009, 07:57 PM Saturday 17th oct?
Ron2K October 5th, 2009, 07:19 AM ^^ I could do that date - I am on standby that weekend though, and therefore may end up either pulling out at the last minute (literally!) or having to rush off to the office in the middle of it. I hope that doesn't happen though. :)
ToxicBunny October 5th, 2009, 08:08 AM I reckon I can do that date as well...
I'm always on standby so if I go huddle in a corner talking secretively on my phone.. it just means I'll need another beer :D
Durbsboi October 5th, 2009, 08:39 AM sounds good, where we going
juzzy October 6th, 2009, 11:04 AM sorry guys...exams till the 22...but have a drink on me (that doesnt mean il pay you back in future though)
Ron2K October 25th, 2009, 08:49 PM Erm... guys... are we still going to do this? :)
dysan1 October 25th, 2009, 09:54 PM lol ya? we need to settle on time and place asap, month nearly over
Durbsboi October 26th, 2009, 10:18 AM Hooters opening....& we get PD to do body shots off the waitresses
ToxicBunny October 26th, 2009, 11:44 AM I won't say no to that :D
dysan1 October 26th, 2009, 06:21 PM Haha thats end of november tho. I out the country from early nov to early dec
dysan1 January 6th, 2010, 12:10 PM surprise surprise this didnt happen :)
ToxicBunny January 6th, 2010, 06:04 PM Totally surprised :)
We do really need to get off our asses and make it happen sometime soon though.
Durbsboi January 7th, 2010, 08:08 AM agreed!
dysan1 February 7th, 2010, 07:28 PM ok guys...tired of waiting on this one...shall we say a friday or weekend in feb? lets set a suitable dat6e and make it happen...
Location suggestions?
Stadium? Airport? Bar!!! (my favourite)
Durbsboi February 8th, 2010, 09:08 AM I thought it was at Hooters, but my vote will go for one of the 2, Stadium or Airport.
GustavoCarvalho February 8th, 2010, 10:14 AM I am up for it either. I went the other day to a pub at Virginia Airport (a place for old people normally, but can be an option to put together the airport and bar idea).
How about in a Saturday afternoon? Maybe this one or the next?
ToxicBunny February 8th, 2010, 10:29 AM This weekend works for me..
Next weekend I'm away with the company on a sponsored pissup :D
dysan1 February 8th, 2010, 11:38 PM clearly gambling makes you lot too much money...this is good for me too as i'm overseas the wknd after
ToxicBunny February 9th, 2010, 07:40 AM I claim innocence on all counts :D
Durbsboi February 9th, 2010, 08:30 AM I got nothing planned ....... so far for this weekend.
ToxicBunny February 9th, 2010, 10:09 AM You do now :)
Ok so where and when then?
dysan1 February 9th, 2010, 11:11 AM midday/lunch time ish? Someone centralish (i do not know where in Durbs you all live but i can drive in from Umhlanga no probs)
ToxicBunny February 9th, 2010, 12:40 PM I live in Glenwood and drive all over.. so anywhere is cool for me, and I likes the midday/lunchtime-ish idea as well.
dysan1 February 9th, 2010, 01:01 PM ok - place? who's all in?
Durbsboi February 10th, 2010, 08:58 AM thought we decided on stadium or airport?
ToxicBunny February 10th, 2010, 09:40 AM Well is the Keg at the stadium open yet?
ToxicBunny February 13th, 2010, 11:08 AM We clearly can't organise a piss up in a brewery :)
dysan1 February 13th, 2010, 03:11 PM i would have to agree with you there! when guys? make it long enough in advance that we can ring in most of the troops
Durbsboi February 15th, 2010, 08:37 AM True plan for 3-4weeks ahead & have something cast in stone, lol. Lets see how far we can get with that airport tour.
Project Director March 8th, 2010, 09:28 AM One of the most charming spots to meet, for small gatherings UP TO 100, is in the upstairs boardroom at the NSRI, from there people can take in the full ongoings of the harbour mouth in its new state and glance over to the vetchies side.
Any funds go to a good cause and you can take your own stuff.
:cheers:PD.
sueffun March 17th, 2010, 08:23 PM Hahaha. this was the funniest post I have seen in a long time, my husband kept asking me what i was laughing about. You guys sound great fun and really should try and meet up for that long overdue drink, sounds as if you need it. Thanks for a GREAT post.......cheers.
Ron2K April 12th, 2010, 07:19 AM Right - breakfast meet, opening day of KSIA - who's in? :)
ToxicBunny April 12th, 2010, 07:57 AM Bring and come.... :)
Will need to find out when the first plane lands... I want to see if I can get some photos of it coming in.
Durbsboi April 12th, 2010, 09:24 AM Sounds like a plan, its a Saturday so its all good :)
Im sure some of the shops will be open ;)
juzzy April 12th, 2010, 11:26 AM im there
dysan1 April 12th, 2010, 11:49 AM shops being open is important...ok...so how do we do this?
ToxicBunny April 12th, 2010, 12:56 PM First things first... we get confirmation on the time of the first flight in..
If its not TOO early then we get there to "celebrate" that event.
Durbsboi April 12th, 2010, 01:42 PM I already emailed my contact at Nino's otherwise we have to settle for good ol Wimpy
edit
got a reply back from the Director, they didnt win the tender for a coffee shop, he still seems pissed off about it since he doesnt want to tell me who did get it.
dysan1 April 12th, 2010, 05:34 PM ^^ check a few pages back on who got in...
Fego, Mugg, Wimpy, CT fishmarket, Spur, Kauai, KFC, Rhapsody's, News cafe...and more...
more than enough to chose from
ToxicBunny April 12th, 2010, 07:45 PM I'm liking either Fego and Mugg tbh....
juzzy April 12th, 2010, 08:44 PM mugg and bean...bottomless coffee! FTW
dysan1 April 13th, 2010, 12:34 AM it tastes like turd
Ron2K April 13th, 2010, 07:44 AM ACSA's season flight schedule suggests that Saturday's first arrival is only at around 08:00, but I'm still waiting for official confirmation. I've also enquired about the viewing deck (or lack thereof).
Durbsboi April 13th, 2010, 09:32 AM We can decide once there or rock paper scissor it.
ToxicBunny April 13th, 2010, 10:41 AM i prefer tiddlywinks... its more competitive.
juzzy April 13th, 2010, 08:09 PM it tastes like turd
 i know it actually does, but hey im a student and when anything drink has bottomless in front of it, il drink it:cheers:
Durbsboi April 14th, 2010, 10:27 AM ^^ Phuket, Patong beach, Rum Jungle bar, bottomless thai beer!

ToxicBunny April 23rd, 2010, 01:36 PM You guys are gonna make me HAVE to go drinking after this meet.... jees.. I'm gonna be one of the oldest guys around :(
dysan1 April 23rd, 2010, 01:37 PM suck it up. :)

Leftfoot April 24th, 2010, 08:15 AM You guys better bring your dads along then so I have company :ohno:l!!! You're as old as you feel...or as my mate Peter G says "as old as your last girlfriend".....so that makes it about 26....!:cheers:
I have mailed Colin Naidoo (ACSA Comms Manager) for permission to film on site on the 1st.
Supa interested in doing a little promo piece for it....its looking so good!:)
dysan1 April 24th, 2010, 02:47 PM so how will we know where to find everyone??
ToxicBunny April 24th, 2010, 03:23 PM In may case.. look for the idiot with the BIG camera :p
But you do raise a good point.. we need to set a proper meeting place since KSIA is so massive.
Leftfoot April 24th, 2010, 06:48 PM In may case.. look for the idiots with the BIG camera :p
But you do raise a good point.. we need to set a proper meeting place since KSIA is so massive.
...there, fixed it for you!
ToxicBunny April 25th, 2010, 09:21 AM Ahhh why thank you kind sir :)
Durbsboi April 26th, 2010, 08:42 AM lol, if I had the go ahead for my filling station outside the interchange that would have been a great meeting place. Obviously we should pick some where thats not to busy and we wouldnt want to get into the way of people. Switch, Project Man, you guys have been to site, where would you think the ideal meeting spot would be?
Leftfoot April 26th, 2010, 10:39 AM Obviously we should pick some where thats not to busy and we wouldnt want to get into the way of people. Switch, Project Man, you guys have been to site, where would you think the ideal meeting spot would be?
.....end of the runway!!!!!! where we can get Blasted wit jet fuel and get great pics! .... ..... er .....then move into the building after first arrival?
ToxicBunny April 26th, 2010, 12:39 PM +10000 I left Leftys idea.. :D
sueffun April 26th, 2010, 01:47 PM I like the fact that you got me down as surefun, was that a freudient slip i wonder or a touch of dsylexia..lol I'm the oldest I bet 50, but i'm sure fun!!! Would love to come and say hi, but seeing that i do that trip everyday from Toti twice i can't face up to another days travelling. Thanks anyway and have a great time.
Ron2K April 26th, 2010, 03:15 PM The problem with Lefty's idea is that it's extremely dependent on 06 being the active runway. If 24 is used, you're not going to see much...
ToxicBunny April 26th, 2010, 03:23 PM We'll cover our bases somehow....
Leftfoot April 26th, 2010, 07:01 PM The problem with Lefty's idea is that it's extremely dependent on 06 being the active runway. If 24 is used, you're not going to see much...
Yeah, its very dependent on which way the wind is blowing. The way I understand it, they always land as far as possible into the wind.....either way, must be prepared. Is there access on the Northern end?
Ron2K April 26th, 2010, 07:35 PM ^^ Not for us mere mortals.
Leftfoot April 26th, 2010, 08:56 PM ^^
Hmmmm!
*dons facepaint and other covert gear......leopard crawls through sugarcane*
Ron2K April 28th, 2010, 09:03 AM so how will we know where to find everyone??
Look for the shortish guy with the A State Of Trance T-shirt. :)
Leftfoot April 28th, 2010, 09:22 AM Look for the shortish guy with the A State Of Trance T-shirt. :)
....you already know what u're wearing??! ...or it that gonna be the look on our faces! :nuts:
Durbsboi April 28th, 2010, 10:01 AM at first I thought he said look for the "Scottish guy"
ToxicBunny April 28th, 2010, 10:06 AM Holy crap... how can someone know what they'll be wearing on Saturday already??...
I didn't know what I would be wearing to work this morning until I got up....
Durbsboi April 28th, 2010, 10:18 AM lol, dont dis Ron, maybe he likes to be organised :dunno: I used to be like that, but now Im just random, stick my hand in the cupboard and pull out 1 hanger
dysan1 April 28th, 2010, 12:05 PM hmmm....maybe i will meet you in the airport...planes dont really excite me
Leftfoot April 28th, 2010, 01:45 PM hmmm....maybe i will meet you in the airport...planes dont really excite me
....how about runways and Glowing lights?
Durbsboi April 28th, 2010, 03:02 PM lol, okay but we really should settle on a meeting point? Switch, ProjectMan any recommendations?
dysan1 April 28th, 2010, 08:38 PM ....how about runways and Glowing lights?
nope sorry...buildings, design more me
juzzy April 28th, 2010, 09:32 PM we could meet somewhere on the piazza... or even better come with a placard saying SSC and your username-gosh we would look retarded to other people:lol:
Leftfoot April 28th, 2010, 10:49 PM Does anyone know when the first flight into KSIA will be......I think the aircraft movement will be pretty random.
....Anyway, today I just wrote off my car so I having stress thinking how Im gonna get down to KSIA......
PLANS WILL BE MADE......WONT MISS IT FOR THE WORLD!
alternate April 28th, 2010, 11:02 PM I'd dig to come, but I'll be away on the weekend. :(
Leftfoot don't forget to stop off at the airport bar :)
Leftfoot April 28th, 2010, 11:36 PM ^^
 One for you....
 One to remember my car by
 One to celebrate the closing of DIA
 One for the opening of KSIA
 One for the SSC meet......or should we make that 2
:drunk::cheers2:
dysan1 April 28th, 2010, 11:47 PM maybe a taxi then? hehe
Switch April 29th, 2010, 08:56 AM Where you meeting and what time?
Can't meet at wimpy as it is through the security checks! Think I'm going to find myself at the old toll because it is right at the end if the runway and the wind direction for Saturday means they will be landing from the north.
Durbsboi April 29th, 2010, 09:26 AM Ok guys we need to settle on time & meeting place soon, otherwise we going to be touring KSIA alone
Leftfoot April 29th, 2010, 09:32 AM Where you meeting and what time?

I think thats where I wanna be Switch....is there easy access there? I would rather catch some planes flying over my head in first then move on the building.
There will be plenty time for the building, but not much time to catch the first landings.
SAA are bringing in that A340-600, that will be AWESOME to see coming in overhead.....if you can GPS the Co-ords...that would be great. I'm gonna try get info from www.windguru.com to try determine whether we need to be North or South.......
ITS ALL TOO EXCITING!!
Ok guys we need to settle on time & meeting place soon, otherwise we going to be touring KSIA alone
Look for parked cars along the road at the ends of the runways! hehe!
dysan1 April 29th, 2010, 04:25 PM ok well i will meet ya'll in the building..pm someone my number...who?
Ron2K April 29th, 2010, 07:50 PM Mike, I have the same idea that you do. Will be dropping you a PM shortly... :)
Leftfoot April 29th, 2010, 10:05 PM Is there gonna be a FIFA ticket vending machine there? Gotta still collect my tickets!
....ok I think we need the following
1. A time for the official meet although I will try get there at sparrows fart.
2. A co-ordinator to collect and distribute contact numbers
3. Some sort of time table of events that day (I believe there is a flyby before first operations)
4. I will probably hang around till the Emirates flight rocks up....that should be around 16:30
I know Durbsboi collected numbers a while back for an attempted earlier meet.....so my vote for item (2) is Durbsboi.
....oh...and bring your Gold Card, the next round is on you!
Switch April 29th, 2010, 10:48 PM Meet at DIA 6:30 at viewing deck as last flight leaves at 7:40
Say if u in. I might not make it but someone got to make a call.
Leftfoot April 29th, 2010, 11:55 PM Meet at DIA 6:30 at viewing deck as last flight leaves at 7:40

I know Durbsboi collected numbers a while back for an attempted earlier meet.....so my vote for item (2) is Durbsboi.
....oh...and bring your Gold Card, the next round is on you!
Nope only you sent me your number, lol
Durbsboi April 30th, 2010, 08:27 AM ok seriously now
Time: 7am? or 6.30am? - what time is the flight flight in or out?
Location: At the spot switch took the pics? (if yes, need GPS co-ord's) or inside the Terminal?
Oh & what are we going to be doing? I gather a walk around the place is in order but I doubt that will take long, then prob breakfast...
ToxicBunny April 30th, 2010, 08:43 AM Well if SA528 is leaving JHB at 6:30, it SHOULD be landing at roughly 7:30 so maybe we should be meeting at about 7am?
Wonder around looking all self important, and then find somewhere to score a breakfast....

No news from Colin....He probably has other things in mind. I have no idea how security will handle us walking around with cameras. Having said that, we could of course be the first people to be arrested at KSIA!!!
As for GPS Co-ords..........these are the 2 areas Im considering
Runway North end - 29° 35.636'S , 31° 8.322'E (might have a little walk to the top of the hill). One can see that dirt road in Switch's pic.....a mate of mine said its accessible)
Runway South end - 29° 37.435'S , 31° 6.338'E (I am assuming I can stop my car on the side of the road here so early in the morning)
Yeah then I need to get old of one of two of you guys for the meet at the main building. (would you mind a PM to me of your Numbers?)
To be safe I reckon Im gonna try get there by 6AM (From Richards Bay)

The spot I was at wasn't close enough. there is a really nice spot of the farm but it is private property. Was going to go there yesterday but didn't and lucky I didn't because the police where patrolling on the farm!!
If it was a A380 I would take the risk but not for a stupid 737!
I thought of something else, you won't be able to see aircraft taking off as they will be off the runway by halfway so either side you go they will be to high to get a nice view. Sucks

I thought as much.....I wonder how that farmer will feel is I wake him up at 06h00 for permission to be on his property. Methinks that would be the right way to do it. What type of police were they? SAPS or like Farm watch?
Anyone know the farmers at 29° 35.404'S , 31° 7.916'E .... wot a spot that would be?
Alternatively, 29° 37.796'S , 31° 6.592'E
Durbsboi April 30th, 2010, 12:10 PM ok guys I created a group for this meet so you can exchange contact details in pvt. Check your notifications for invites. Anyone that didnt receive one hola at me
Switch April 30th, 2010, 12:24 PM The farm is owned by tongaat hullett. They were SAPS.
Was thinking about chatting to them and organising permission to be on the hill. Like starting and aviation club with a subs to pay. What you all think?

Durbsboi April 30th, 2010, 03:22 PM ^^I KNOW! please lets settle this soon....
ToxicBunny April 30th, 2010, 03:36 PM Ok, well first question is inside or outside the airport to start with.....
Durbsboi April 30th, 2010, 03:47 PM Well I think the first question should be time, if we want to see the first take off, which is 6.30am, we would have to meet at 6am. Then we have to decide where is the best place to see it from?
ToxicBunny April 30th, 2010, 03:51 PM Damn you and your logic :P
Durbsboi April 30th, 2010, 04:04 PM hehehehe
juzzy April 30th, 2010, 04:59 PM ok so DB ill be there at 6 (with my pillow) now where? then again we could meet anywhere, i cant see many people being there at 6am,so we i dont think we would struggle to find each other.my dad thinks there will be traffic jams:lol: wait... will there be?
ToxicBunny April 30th, 2010, 05:13 PM I'll be there at 6am as well (*cries*)
Lets organise a meeting place and go from there...
DBN-boom April 30th, 2010, 05:20 PM Tell me where you meet in the airport & we may do a story on you guys (and let me know what to lookout for) Dont worry I wont talk abt SSC - just say a twitter group of DTP fanatics were at the opening day - lol
First flight lands at new (King Shaka) airport as Durban pilot comes full circle
Suren Naidoo
A DURBAN pilot landed a giant South African Airways Airbus A340-600 at the new King Shaka International Airport yesterday in an emotionally charged and historic moment.
As flight SA3501 touched down, with Captain John Herselman at the controls, the passengers, more than 100 of them, broke into applause and high-fives. It was a perfect landing for Herselman and his co-pilot, Captain Les Wahl, in the first passenger flight into the airport.
The trip from Joburg’s OR Tambo airport was orchestrated by SAA, the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) and the Civil Aviation Authority as a test of the new airport before its opening tomorrow. Lucky passengers aboard the flight included Acsa chief Monhla Hlahla, aviation industry bosses and media.
As Herselman flew north over Durban, he pointed out landmarks including the harbour and Moses Mabhida Stadium. With spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and rolling green sugar cane fields in sight as he approached the runway, three air force helicopters could be seen in the distance, escorting the plane in.
It landed and was sprayed by water cannon, forming a ceremonial “water curtain” as it taxied towards the gleaming new terminal building.
Herselman said: “Welcome to King Shaka International Airport (KSIA). You are privileged to be the first passengers to land at this magnificent new world-class airport. You are a part of history.
“Wow, what a moment for KZN and South Africa. After all the wars, we have finally landed at King Shaka International,” said Hlahla.
She was referring to the airport development’s being one of the most contentious infrastructure projects in South African history, having been dogged by delays and spats since the idea for it was first mooted in the 1970s.
“I am happy. You have to understand that everything about this project has been a challenge, including very tight deadlines to have it ready ahead of the World Cup. It’s a culmination of dogged determination and a huge amount of hard work for everyone involved,” she said.
“Today’s test is a major milestone and proves KSIA’s state of readiness. The purpose was to test our airfield infrastructure, like instrument landing systems, air traffic control communication and passenger loading bridges,” she said.
For Herselman, landing the inaugural flight at the new airport was particularly special.
“Some 30 years ago, when the land here was first levelled for the new airport development, I did my pilot training here on what was an airstrip. Now, so many years later, to be able to land the first flight is unbelievable. Not every day will you be the first to land a giant aircraft at a brand new airport,” he said.

Direct flights to India on the cards
May 05, 2010 Edition 2
Suren Naidoo
JUST days after the opening of King Shaka International Airport in Durban, it has emerged that Jet Airways, India's second-biggest airline, is considering introducing direct flights to Durban from Mumbai.
Naresh Goyal, the boss of privately owned Jet Airways, discussed the matter with KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize on Friday. Dinesh Naidoo, marketing director of India's Serendipity Tours, also met Goyal.
Mkhize confirmed yesterday that talks were under way to secure a direct route between Mumbai and Durban. He emphasised that this was "a work in progress" and approval from aviation regulators was needed.
"Teams from the provincial government and Jet Airways will start working on this. Nothing has been finalised. We are serious about securing this route and want it to be finalised as soon as possible."

Its n done already by some countries, can we pull it off?:)
ToxicBunny September 23rd, 2010, 07:10 PM The distances are quite insane in this country really.. and people are struggling as it is unfortunately :(
Durbsboi September 23rd, 2010, 09:06 PM national meet up does sound fun but seeing we have such a mixed bunch of members with some of us still in school/ varsity I think its best to keep it to cities this time. So any ideas?
Switch September 23rd, 2010, 11:01 PM Let's make it in November so it gives us enough time to plan. At the Keg at the stadium?
dysan1 September 24th, 2010, 09:54 AM november sounds good as October is a right off for me. With enough warming i hope most of the Durban crew can make it

Pule September 24th, 2010, 08:09 PM Who knows, I might make it to Durbs for this but as always ti will depend on date and orher factors.
