I had lived there for a while some years ago. if you like driving you can drive around the country within a day. that time I was there (around 8 years ago) there was no dual-carriage roads, although I remember there were some construction works on the road towards Lochiel/Badplaas. anyway the king of Swazi has got the best collection of cars in the area.

Well Swaziland is a country independent from any other state. The development of Swaziland was also done independent of developments in South Africa.

Swaziland has only one expressway, the others are just two or three lane roads. The network has the name MR. The expressway is MR3, but we also have MR1, MR5, MR8 etc. MR1 being the oldest road in the country. District and rural roads are normally named D. example D12, D18 etc. The MR roads are all tarred while some of the D roads are tar and some are gravel. Some D roads are even better than some MR roads as the government is in the process of tarring the important routes. The network is fairly extensive but some of it doesnt have tar, but it is nevertheless maintained by the Ministry of Thinkhundla and Rural Development.

Drove through Swaziland in 2007. The connector between Mbabane and the SA border is a formal motorway, with blue signs, a motorway sign at the beginning and access restrictions. From Mbabane to Manzani, there is a substandard motorway of 2+2 lanes. No access restrictions apply, so the signage is in green, the colour for non-motorways throughout Southern Africa.

Here (http://www.panoramio.com/user/1480171/tags/Swaziland) are a few pictures of that road.

Swaziland Government is currently improving the whole Road network. The MR3 from Oshoek(SD - SA border) to Lomahasha(SD - Mozambique border) will be a world class highway and currently has bypass section in our two major cities Manzini and Mbabane.

The Mhlambanyatsi road back in the 1970s, Swaziland was undergoing a lot of changes since we had just got freedom. The then King Sobhuza II made a lot of efforts to industrialize the country. He encouraged the skilled English to stay and help in the industries and education sector, this significantly help improve Swaziland's economy. Seen in this picture is a man made forest which constituted one of the country's biggest exports and provided lots of jobs.

A rural road north of the country. Most unpaved rural roads are maintained and graded by the Ministry of Tinkhundla and Rural development which was under the deputy Prime Minister until the recent elections and has now been reestablished an independent portfolio.

This is the North of Swaziland and it is VERY mountainous. Building a road in this country is many time more expensive than in South Africa, but the road system is being constantly improved.
