Baotou (Chinese: 包头; pinyin: Bāotóu, Mongolian: Buɣutu) is a prefecture-level city and the largest city in Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China. The city's Mongolian name means "place with deer", and an alternate name in Chinese is "Deer City".

sure. China was under Mongolia control during Yuan dynasty (AD1271-1368). China and Mongolia are more or less one country since then. Inner mongolia is an area historically controlled by Chinese agriculturalists, Machus, Xiongnu, Xianbei, Khitan, Nurchen, and Mongol nomads, most of which are Chinese minorities now.

During Qing dynasty (AD1644-1912), Mongolia was administered in a different way for each of the following region:

Outer Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Taoxi Mongolia, The Chahar Eight Banners, The Guihua Tümed banner and The Hulunbuir region.

During the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, Mongolia (Outer Mongolia) declared independence, but had to struggle until 1921 to firmly establish de-facto independence, and until 1945 to gain international recognition. (wikipedia)

It's more of Inner Mongolia even if there was no such geographic concept (IM and OM) at that time, but Genghis Khan and his troops were mostly living and haunting in today Hetao district (in Inner Mongolia), northern Shanxi province and northern Hebei Province. However, you know, during the age of cold arms, a horse is like a tank, the Mongolian warriors had a very long radius of action, so it's not a problem if they planned to cross over the Gobi desert into the outer mongolian steppe/wasteland.

Xiongnu, Xianbei, Khitan, Nurchen, and Mongol nomads, most of which are Chinese minorities now.

a fraction of Xiongnu(huns) and the major part of Xianbei, Khitans were assimilated into Hans indeed.
