I've seen lots of forumers on SSC who just dislike skyscrapers. It's a bit strange, since it's a skyscraper forum, yet it also means we SSC forumers are more and more varous, and I think Chongqing is various enough to satisfy different tastes. :scouserd:

Chongqing's like some cities of bay area of the US,it's built in the valley, not on the hills around. :sleepy:Someone also think that the topography is like LA's.The area you saw above is just a little part of CQ,and this area is also the most mountainous.

I've been to Chongqing so I know the geographical features over there... unless it has changed in the past few years :|

Each U.S. bay area city is different, so don't clump them together. Chongqing's geographical location is NOTHING like that of L.A. L.A. is relatively flat with no rivers running through it.

Chongqing is extremely mountainous.

Chongqing is extremely mountainous.

I think the downtown area of CQ(Where you posted in that pic) is obviously mountainous compared to most cities.I don't know whether it can be called extremely mountainous or not,but this unique style of CQ and beautiful landscape around Chongqing attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.

The topography has nothing to do with building a subway or not.Generally speaking, the subway is under ground, what account are geological structure and the components of the geology.

Your statement that Chongqing is built across the river,so the subway is difficult to build is fully wrong, too. If cities buit across the river cannot build subways, well London,Paris,Shanghai,Guangzhou etc all would have difficulties in building their subways.

Whatever you think, the subway is under construction now,Chongqing will have its subway in the near future.

I never said that the fact Chongqing is built across rivers make it IMPOSSIBLE to build subways. Obviously it's more than possible as San Francisco for example has the BART system that crosses the bay.

However, being in a mountainous region, in addition to having rivers making it more difficult to build a subway system, especially if the elevation varies by a good amount.

Chongqing needs to clean up its river banks. I know some are paved but most aren't yet.

I think they are waiting to see what will happen till 2009 When The three gorges dam will complete totally. The water will rise a lot.

I know they do some research now,for example, which plant is suitable for the greenary of the river banks.Because you know the river doesn't keep the same level all the time,so the plants along the river bank will be covered under the water during some time of a year.

Definitely, but We need the effort of the upper area like Yunnan Province, and Sichuan province.

BTW,it's probable that the Yangzte river will get blue or green within the part of Chongqing after the completion of Three Gorges dam like Jialing river now.

hi, guys,

i am a recruit, here are the pictures about my trip to Chongqing Beibei Jinyunshan National Forest Park yesterday.

actually,i have posted it to the other column ,but it seems that less foreigner like it,55555555555555~~so i decide to rebuild my confidence by posting it to Mainland column, hope u can like it~ ha.ha......

it's about the ancient architecture 、natural landscape & lifestyle~

ok,let me introduce something about this National forest Park.
it's locate in Beibei Disctrict of ChongQing city ,and it's about 40km from downtown, but it is not a suburb area.

i just want to use this unique thread to present a different Chongqing to everybody.......(about 50 photos)

because if we saw the City development is very fast n ve the great master plan.

Why the city comparisons??

"Chicago is USA's Chongqing "

Isn't chicago the birthplace of the skyscraper? There is only one chicago...

"China's NY will be HK"

Well HK IMO is better than NY but you can't really compare the two, they are too different.

What's a skyscraper? A 10fl+ building? Those onese were invented in the Middle East I think :D

I love Chongqing and I love Chicago. Two great cities! But I don't get these comparisons. Chongqing is China's Chicago, Suzhou is China's Venice... why not Vladivostok is Russia's Tampa or Toulouse is France's Sapporo?

now my main concern as with all the cities in china is the preservation of historical buildings and pollution, judging from the pictures i've seen of the city the water seem to be in pretty bad shape.

Although the rivers in Chongqing is far from "pure" and "clean", but the "yellowness" isn't pollution, but sand.

The comparison can be discussed in a rational way. However, saying a Chinese city is USA's XXX without sufficient reasons is way too subjective and retarded. Demography, economy, politics, culture, history, geography, urban planning and reputation of all Chinese/American notable cities should be known first.

Okay here is my explanation:

Shanghai - NYC
Goes without saying. Financial center. Huangpu region feels a lot like a shorter (older classical buildings) version of downtown Manhattan. Has two huge business centers: NYC has midtown and downtown, Shanghai has Pudong and Puxi. Largest city in respective countries. Huge number of skyscrapers. Chongming can become like Long Island in future. Enormous (former) Jewish population. etc. etc.

Guangzhou - LA
Both in warm climates and are the largest cities in the wealthiest province/state of their countries. Guangzhou's Tianhe skyline resembles LA's. Big sprawling city. Palm trees all over the place. They are sister cities.

Chongqing - Chicago
Refer to the article at the beginning of this thread

Hangzhou - Philadelphia
About 100+ miles south of New York/Shanghai. Both very historical cities and former capitals in the past. Geography of the city is similar as in they are both on a stretch of land sandwiched by water. Both are home to one of the most prestigious universities in their country named after their their province/state, University of Zhejiang/University of Pennsylvania.

Nanjing - Boston
Very very culturally significant in their respective countries. Both an educational center. Both 250ish miles from New York/Shanghai. Both preserved older and distinctive parts of their city found in few other places in their countries. Both are considered more laid back/intellectual counterparts to New York/Shanghai.

Dalian - San Francisco
Both have very hilly geographic areas and are located in a bay area. The skyline resembles each other as do the individual houses surrounding the downtown area. Both still have very distinct vintage trolley cars. Both are very important commercial cities in their respective regions of the same caliber.

Changchun - Detroit
Both are notoriously dangerous cities known for their massive industrial capability particularly in automobile/transportation manufacture. Many times I've heard people refer to Changchun as the Detroit of China

Xiamen - Miami
Very famous beach city. Located in a very hot and tropical area. Palm trees located everywhere. Popular destination for vacation for both countries.

Urumqi - Houston
Enormous city in a desert relatively remote part of the country. Both very automobile reliant country as public transportation coverage is not amazing.

Shanghai is not an ancient city by any standards!!! There were a couple of villages in the area around the time of the Song Dynasty and until the Qing Dynasty, it was nothing more than a walled town. It has a history as a recognizable city of a couple of hundred years tops. NYC has been around since 1624 (Ming Dynasty) and if you want to include Shanghai's history since its "inception" during the Song Dynasty, well NYC had Algonquin villages in the area over a thousand years.

1.the air qualite(even though it has been absolutely improved a lot,but compares to where im staying, still a lot of work needs to be done)

2.2 rivers around here, that makes fog all the time, together with the first reason ive wrote,it makes the no so much natural lightning less clear

3.we dont have that much electricity power to just light up so many empty towers like paris,i live here, and i can surely tell u guys that ,in la defense, few people working at night, maybe there is some, but mostly, its empty..
as for us,we cant do that,so the lights u see above, its actually working there, even though not that freaking much like Tokyo..sorry to sound that harsh, but thats the truth

4.economie problem, we r improving,but still...do i need to explain more

5.i hate french keyboard...again,sorry about my english

Chongqing's infrstructure is pretty impressive, but I don't understand that its GDP per capital is so low, I guess it is only 20% of GuangZhou(USD10,000+ in 2006)

I think you meant something like Chongqing megalopolis, that's not a city at all.Chongqing city proper is of course far higher.

Chongqing is a modern city, with an ancient history spanning more than 3,000 years. It is the nation's fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. It encompasses within its borders, a great wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests and abundant flora and fauna. Being the focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges tourist industry, Chongqing is a tourist attraction as well as being a commercial city. Situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River - at the confluence of Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, in Southwest China, Chongqing is a port city with the largest area and population in China.

Chongqing is a massive city. It is the centre for commerce and jobs. It used to be part of Sichuan province governed by Chengdu (capital). But it always had a massive population and industrial centre, therefore it was made a municipality on 1997 with counties from Sichuan. This created a municipality with a population of 31 million people. Foreign companies are investing operations in Chongqing because it the Chinese government need to develop the interior and also to provide jobs for the millions of people who are locals and also from other provinces. This will enhance the economic prosperity of the interior and reduce the widening rich poor gap that China is experiencing. Since 1997, Chongqing has developed its city and pour resources in infrastructure, housing, factories and services. Major financial firms such as KPMG and also Intel has operations in the Chongqing.
