The Forbidden City is the world's largest surviving palace complex and covers 72 ha. It is a rectangle 961 metres (3,150 ft) from north to south and 753 metres (2,470 ft) from east to west. It consists of 980 surviving buildings with 8,707 bays of rooms.[1] The Forbidden City was designed to be the centre of the ancient, walled city of Beijing. It is enclosed in a larger, walled area called the Imperial City. The Imperial City is, in turn, enclosed by the Inner City; to its south lies the Outer City.

This is not the world's largest surviving palace complex with an area of 72 hectares because we know about Sadabad Palace: http://www.persiancarpet.lv/english/ir_teh_sadabad.htm -> This palace is known as the Saad Abad Cultural Complex, and bounded by Velenjak to the north and Kolak-Chal to the east, it occupies an area of 410 hectares.

That is Sabz Palace in Sa'dabad Palace Complex, one of the most splendid palaces in the world which has been built using a rare semi-precious stone.

that's nothing like the forbidden city, totally different concept, the forbidden city was only the palace where the emperors lived, that's it,nothing else.as for royal gardens and hunting grounds, they have other places.for instance, also the UNESCO world heritage site,Beijing's Summer Palace,it's one of Chinese royal gardens.

The Beijing Summer Palace:

I think The Forbidden City claims the title based on the above, not the empty space that is included.palaces should be the buildings ,not lands.

Sources? From googlemap it looks no larger than 60 hectares, most are forests. Forbidden city is a 1km x 800m rectangle so it's about 80 hectares. Beijing's Imperial City (not the Forbidden City) is about 800 hectares.

The forbidden City is the center of Beijing, basically it was a big house for the emperor's family.that's Chinese concept of a palace:tons of buildings, not lands.

probably pictures can't tell everything but i have to say from those small buildings in the pictures dont really look royal, more like average people's homes.in China royal palaces have to be of grander and splendor, towering all other buildings like an elephant to ants.they have to have majestic royal atmosphere since the emperors believed that they were the center of the universe and from where they resided they exerted absolute divine power.

I also think that the Versailles Palace has the biggest single floor space. Not including the large gardens etc.

It depends on whether you count several buildings or only the the space of one interrelated palace.

from Wikipedia

World's largest palace
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The title of the “world's largest palace” can be difficult to ascertain, and altogether controversial, as many different groups have motivations to use their own unique standards to advance the claim that a particular palace is the largest in the world.

As measured by “world's largest palace by area enclosed within the palace’s fortified walls,” the title is held by China’s Forbidden City complex, which covers an area of 720,000 square meters (178 acres). The buildings of the Forbidden City have a combined floorspace of 1,614,600 square feet (150,001 m2) and contain roughly 9,000 rooms.

One area of controversy surrounding the title of “world’s largest palace” surrounds which physical measurement to use in drawing comparisons between palaces. Some feel only the actual land area occupied by the structure (the "footprint") should be considered; several of the palaces often proclaimed as the "world's largest" rely upon precisely such a measurement to substantiate their claims of indeed being the largest in the world:

Nevertheless, title to the “world’s largest royal domain,” as measured by the total area considered be part of the palace grounds, is claimed by the Palace of Versailles. Versailles’s grounds cover a total area of 87,728,720 square feet (8,150,265 m2) or 2,014 acres, which includes 230 acres of gardens. However, the palace itself contains 721,206 square feet (67,002 m2) of floorspace.[1]

hunting ground? It's more like Chengde Summer Palace

The project of building Chengde Mountain Resort started in 1703 and finished in 1790. The whole mountain resort covers an area 5,640,000 square meters. It is the largest royal garden in China. The wall of the mountain resort is over 10,000 meters in length. In summers, emperors of Qing Dynasty came to the mountain resort to relax themselves and escape from the high temperature in Beijing.

The whole Resort can be divided into three areas which are lakes area, plains area and hills area. The lakes area, which includes 8 lakes, covers an area of 496,000 square meters. The plains area covers an area of 607,000 square meters. The emperors held horse races and hunted in the area. The largest area of the three is the hills area. It covers an area of 4,435,000 square meters. Hundreds of palaces and temples were built on the hills in this area.

The elaborate Mountain Resort features large parks with lakes, pagodas, and palaces ringed by a wall. Outside the wall are the Eight Outer Temples (外八庙), built in varying architectural styles drawn from throughout China. One of the best-known of these is the Putuo Zongcheng Temple, built to resemble the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The resort and outlying temples were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The nearby Puning Temple, built in 1755, houses the world's tallest wooden statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara.
