I really like Kobe, especially the beef! lol.
Seriously, getting away to Kobe from the metropolis that is Osaka is seriously refreshing, you can smell the sea air, its cleaner and has a great waterfront. Around Sannomiya the nightlife is really buzzy without being overwhelming. If i was to live in Japan long term i would stay in Kobe.

Kobe is a great city.Close to water.Ive been living in Osaka for over 5 years now.I never go there.Ive been in the area about 10 times during this period.Mostly for work.I mainly pass through on the Hanshin expressway to get to the breathtaking Seto(inland sea) coastline between Ako and Okayama.
When I do go there I always pop into the 'Mosaic shopping center'.They have a great seafood buffee for about 4,000 Yen(40 dollars US).A bargin!!!!!!!!!!!.The choice is unbelievable.Lobster,Crab,Trout,etc...............................

William Merrell Vories
http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~v-c/Grpfile/shouzou.gif
William Merrell Vories (October 28, 1880 - May 7, 1964) was an architect born in the USA who worked mainly in Japan. He was also one of the founders of "ヴォーリズ合名会社" (later "近江兄弟社") widely selling Mentholatum in Japan.
Later Dr. William Merrell Vories married a Japanese woman 一柳満喜子 and became a naturalized citizen of Japan with the name of Hitotsuyanagi (一柳).
He was born in Kansas, KS, USA, in 1880, graduated from Colorado College in 1904, and came to Japan in 1905 as an Engish teacher with an intention to engage in mission work among the Japanese. Through YMCA activities in Japan he got acquainted with many American and Japanese people and built houses, churches, schools, hospitals, YMCAs and more on their requests. His buildings and houses both well-designed as well as comfortable to live in have been loved by the Japanese very much.
He also loved music very much, making carols and introducing the Hammond Organ into Japan.

Shouldn't these pics be on the Osaka thread? That third pic looks like "The Tower Osaka" construction site, taken from perhaps the Mitsui Nakanoshima Park Tower? Second is the same site from street level, looking north.

Also, since these are new buildings, then these are what you can expect from the interior and from the rooms mainly. World-class living will now be available to the people of Kobe.

Yup, it can be said that with these towers, the opportunity for the people of Kobe (and also residing foreigners) to live in world-class residential buildings is now becoming a reality.
And it will all happen before the decade ends (well before year 2010)

I love how Kobe is, just between the sea and the mountains, and its very dense.
I'm thinking about go to Kobe and stay for 2 days, could somebody tell me some interesting places to go? I also would like to have a view of the whole region, from a tall place...maybe a mountain? If anybody knows any place, help me please :)

You are spoilt for choice really; in the morning, take the Portliner round Port Island;
http://www.feel-kobe.jp/english/sightseeing/island.html
for an afternoon and evening you could go to Sannomiya station, walk down the Motomachi shotengai, go round Chinatown and end up at Harborland Mosaic for an evening meal.
http://www.feel-kobe.jp/english/sightseeing/harbor.html
Tall places? Port Tower is a venerable viewpoint to see the harbour. Both Rokko-san and Maya-san have ropeway access; my favourite is not so high; Nunobiki herb garden.
http://www.feel-kobe.jp/english/sightseeing/kitano25.html
go in the afternoon, walk down thru the garden from the top station; after you walk thru the glasshouses there is a lovely tea shop with a balcony where you can sit and drink herbal teas and watch the lights come up over Osaka Bay
There are better websites that those mentioned; it's just what I found in a hurry; google the terms. Or ask Maki-chan, she's in that area.
Enjoy it; try the cakes, Kobe specialise in European cakes....

I was in Japan all last year, and I spent a lot of my time in Kobe. It really is a great city.
I don't think many people realize though how far the city has come since that fateful day in 1995. Take a look at this video, it shows parts of kobe during late january 1995, and compares them to today. It is almost unbelievable how much kobe has recovered, and how fast it recovered.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgyiP6Umwo4
I was especially suprised when I visited the house of a friend of mine, who lives in Nagata ward of Kobe. Back in 1995, the scope of destruction in nagata was so bad that it looked like someone dropped an atomic bomb on it. Now, you can't even tell something happened there at all.
Here is Nagata ward from January, 1995:

coldstar, Do you know who designed that flag?
Of COURSE I KNOW!!
Tibetan national flag was designed by a Japanese !
Bunkyo Aoki (青木文教) was a Buddhist monk and scholor of Ryukoku University in Kyoto. He was dispatched to Tibet and stayed at Lhasa in 1910s for studying the Tibetan Buddhism.
He deeply felt compassion towards the Tibetan people and admired its great religion as most Japanese do.
Finally, he made friends with His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama there, and was asked for the design of Tibetan national flag by His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama. Then, the national flag of Tibet was introduced in 1912 by the 13th Dalai Lama officially.
The flag is called '雪山獅子旗 (snow mountain and lions) and one of the most beautiful flags on earth without any doubt.
BTW, I myself have been to Tibet several years ago. Since then, I've always been for the Tibetan people. Really great people!!!

Yup, prime beachside property. Before I thought there was only one of those houses, but I guess the owner had the one on the right built. Either that or his neighbor bought Tadao Ando's design and had it inverted. :D

Thread bump update:
It looks like Kobe is also having a mini construction boom of its own. Out of which, five upcoming projects have caught my eye and these are the ff:
1) Suma Coast Tower
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~building-pc/kobe/kobe-115suma.JPG
:cheers1:
Wow. I lived on the 8th floor of that brown building to the left behind Suma Coast Tower (on the side facing the tower!) until last year - when I left it was nothing more than a hole in the ground.
Good thing I moved when I did; my whole view of the bay would be totally cut off by now.
It should also be noted that right behind the tower there are a number of residential homes who protested a huge tower being built right in front of them. They had protest signs up and down the street when I was there.
However considering it replaces a sea of concrete parking, it's tough to decide what is worse. And of course the land costs right across from the beach and near a new station are too high to simply sell it off for houses.
From when I lived there (pics are late 2006 early 2007):

Nice shots! I like Nara.
The only problem is the deer come after you, trying to get food. They are calm usually, but suddenly become so aggressive once they notice your food.
Be careful...

Nara is really charming. It's portrayed as a mystical place in the drama 鹿男あをによし (Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Shikaotoko_Aoniyoshi)). The deer really aren't afraid of people at all. I originally watched the drama for Ayase Haruka, but was also rewarded with beautiful scenes of Nara which surprised me with its serenity and beauty.
