I just wanna know, is the Marine Tower still a designated, working lighthouse?
Which means that the beacon, if it is still there, is used for the guidance of vessels rather than decorative.

I visited the city sometime ago when in 2001.Nice place.I couldnt understand why it was named Japan's second largest city.It must just mean the population in the city proper. It was small compared to Osaka.I walked everywhere. From Chinatown to the port and through the city up to Shin Yokohmaha station.A big place but not as big as Osaka.

How long would it take to get from Shinjuku to Yokohama's Landmark Tower by train?
In about 30 minutes you reach Yokohama station with the JR Shonan Shinjuku Line. Add 5 more to the tower by the Minato Mirai subway line.

I recently visited Yokohama. The Landmark tower is nice, and the elevator the fastest in the world. Quite a trip.
The elevators in theTaipei 101 have now the record. But the elevators in the Landmark Tower are still very impressive.
I have a small video that i have made. The video is 35 second long and begins in the second floor and ends in the 69.
If someone have 5,5MB webspace i could upload the video.
I made a big mistake. I was only in Yokohame because of the Landmark tower. It would be better if i had spent some time in the city.

i've been up both.... the taipei 101 and the landmark tower and although the latter is supposed to be slower imo the lifts in the landmark tower felt noticeably quicker. maybe they accelerate faster but have a lower top speed.

^^ Wow, great shots you got there, vapour! I enjoyed and loved all of them.
Yokohama is stunningly beautiful and breath-taking, indeed!
As usual, Japanese public areas (even the public food areas) are sqeaky clean.
Thanks for the pics. :cheers2:
P.S. Why don't you paste your pics at the Greater Tokyo article at Wikipedia. The pictures there are extremely outdated.

and thanks for the pic of Kawasaki Musashikosugi.
Recently another big project of Musashikosugi was revealed.
Does anyone know how tall is the *massive* building u/c over Shin-Yokohama station? I guess it's around 100 metres.
JR Tokai's shinkansen Shin-Yokohama station will be only 75m (19 stories).
Takashimaya department Store will move in.

Currently redevelopments of Musashikosugi are under way mainly in South Exit area. (18 scrapers are now under construction, including 59 floor residential tower.)
But last week, new projects by 3 different companies were revealed. They are 7.3 hectares, all in North Exit, near Kosugi Tower Place. A station of Kawasaki City Subway is due to be built there.

Although my "Location" tag says Saitama, I've never introduced Saitama so far on the forum. So I rode on my bicycle today, taking some photos of the neighborhood.
Here I present my neighborhood... but be warned, this is just some nameless suburb in Saitama Prefecture. You really have got nothing but apartments here.

Compared with the legendary used underwear vending machine (http://www.photomann.com/japan/machines/index.htm), rice vending machines are not even remotely weird. ;)
Even in Japan, though, the vast majority of vending machines are either those of drinks, cigarettes, or railway tickets. You may occasionally see other kinds of machines, but the chance to meet truly bizarre ones, like those of hamburgers (http://www3.famille.ne.jp/~nom/jihanki/gutenburger.html), hot spring water (http://www3.famille.ne.jp/~nom/jihanki/onsenstand.html), or live lobsters (http://www.geocities.jp/lgcl0127/ebi.html), is terribly rare (to the point it's virtually none).

Or is it Kobe???

Nope. Relatively speaking, Saitama Prefecture is still much less urbanized compared with Tokyo (including Tama area) or Kanagawa. It means less condos/flats, and also less detached houses, too. (Rice vending machine is a good sign to show you are in a country side.)
In Japan, places famous for expensive residence, Japanese equivalents of Beverly Hills, include Den-en-chofu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Den-en-ch%C5%8Dfu) (Tokyo), Ashiya, Nishinomiya (both near Kobe), etc. As for modern residential area in general, I guess large new towns like Tama New Town (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tama_New_Town) (western Tokyo), Kohoku New Town (northern Kanagawa), or Senri New Town (northern Osaka) can be considered as "kings" in terms of their sizes.
Of course, I do like my neighborhood. With a little laid-back atmosphere, it's a nice place to stay. But objectively speaking, Saitama Prefecture is not particularly known for... erm... anything.
i notice alot of Nissan cars in Japan.. is Nissan the top selling car manufacturer in Japan? :?
It's Toyota who rules this country.
Car sales in the year 2006:
1. Toyota 1,660,388
2. Nissan 766,763
3. Honda 702,290
4. Suzuki 691,004
5. Daihatsu 622,484
6. Mazda 269,152
7. Mitsubishi 263,488
8. Subaru 245,234
9. Isuzu 91,982
10. Mitsubishi Fuso 71,414
11. Volkswagen 54,390
12. Hino 53,952
13. Mercedes-Benz 49,713
14. BMW 49,014
15. Lexus 31,089
16. Nissan Diesel 19,754
17. Audi 15,018
18. Mini 13,184
19. Volvo 10,885
20. Peugeot 10,289
In my neighbourhood, BTW, you see lots of Honda, possibly more than Toyota, since their factory is near here. By the same logic, I assume Nissan can be seen more in places like Kanagawa.

So, what's the automobile population in Japan?
Quick googling gave me these numbers.
Total population (2006): 127,767,944
Number of legally registered four-wheel cars (2007): 75,881,492
People with driver's licenses, excluding those for motorcycles (2006): 76,7246,48 (or 60% of total pop.)
People in larger metropolitan areas (that is, either Greater Tokyo or Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto) have less cars, thanks to the well developed public transport. In anywhere else, on the other hand, the situation is not that different from North America. For instance, there are 32 cars per 100 people in Tokyo Metropolis, while there are 83 cars per 100 people in Gunma Prefecture.
How do you dare...
I have to admit Shinnosuke is the most famous Saitama citizen internationally. :D Totoro would be the close 2nd.

Yokohama is the third largest town in Japan, with a population of3.27 million.
Yokohama is situated only 30 minutes by car or train from Tokyo.
Yokohama dates back to the 11th century but it was first when the port was opened in 1859 that the town started to grow.
On September 1st, 1923 The Great Kanto Earthquake totally destroyed Yokohama. 20,000 dead and and 60,000 houses were destroyed
Still Yokohama had almost completely been rebuilt by 1929.
Again in 1945 the city was burnt to the ground by the US bombings.
In one air raid on May 29, 42 percent of the city area was burnt to ashes. 14,157 died, were injured or missing, 79,017 houses were destroyed.

In saitama, you can try Kawagoe. There's a touristic area nearby with traditional houses and a watchtower. It's about half an hour north-west of ikebukuro station with the express train.

I don't really recommend Saitama Prefecture to visit (it's the least popular tourist destination in Japan), but if you really want to, my picks would be:
Kawagoe: As already said, there is a historic area with traditional buildings, although that's just for a few blocks. The shopping district called Crea Mall is fairly vibrant, too. "Kawagoe Festival" on October is very nice. 40 minutes from Ikebukuro on Tobu Tojo Line.
Koku-Koen: Literally "Aviation Park", a suburb of Tokorozawa with a large park. There is nothing breathtaking here, but is nice for a laid-back outing. 40 minutes from Takadanobaba on Seibu Shinjuku Line.
Matsubara-Danchi: There is a rather large complex of apartments here. If you just want to see a faceless suburb in Saitama, this can be a nice choice (although it can well be super-boring). 30 minutes from Ueno on Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line + Tobu Isesaki Line.
Shinrin-Koen: Literally "Forest Park". A huge park with forest and cycling roads. If you want to ride a bicycle until you fall by sunstroke, this is a place to go. 60 minutes from Ikebukuro on Tobu Tojo Line.
Chichibu + Nagatoro: You can go Seibu-Chichibu Station in 80 - 100 minutes on Seibu Ikebukuro Line + Seibu Chichibu Line. This place is truly a beautiful scenic area. Only the problem is, this is not a suburb at all, but a mountainous country side. Chichibu Night Festival on June is very nice, if you can wait another 10 months from now.
But actually, if you just want to see suburban everyday Japanese city in Greater Tokyo, my recommendation is to take a ride on Tama Urban Monorail. I rode it last week and the view from there was great. Because the line was built recently, it runs on a fairly tall viaduct, something like 20m above from the ground-level.

The park sounds great because of the cycling option. One of my most fun experiences in Japan involve cycling from Akihabara to Taito-ku where I've stayed before, I truely felt like I was part of the city.
Can you rent a bike there?
The monorail also sounds fun. The ride from Haneda was great too :D
Hopefully, I can wake up early tomorrow to quickly visit. I guess about 3 hours including the ride there and back is good enough? Need to do some shopping before my flight back on 7pm

Yep. The course is something like this (http://www.shinrin-koen.jp/cycling.html).

Shinjuku - (Keio Line + Keio Sagamihara Line) - Tama Center - (Tama Urban Monorail) - Tamagawa-Josui - (Seibu Haijima Line + Seibu Shinjuku Line) - Takadanobaba
The above route takes roughly 100 minutes excluding the waiting, so 3 hours seems reasonably enough. (For just riding the monorail, not going to the park.)
Have a fun (with many kids screaming here and there)! :)

Yes indeed, Landmark Tower is a landmark by itself. I had visited the tower when it had just been commissioned. I bought something in the Sogo department store and while coming out, I left my glasses. Within moments, I was followed and the glasses given back to me.
Landmark had also lots of designer shops and up-market garments stores. When I wanted to visit all of them, my friends got annoyed and asked me as to why I was so much interested in garments.
Perhaps Landmark is to be looked at as Minato Mirai rather than an individual building. The whole place has a feeling of being born the same day.

Landmark Plaza is best viewed as "details" in the painting of Minato Mirai. This is perhaps the only fully planned and futuristic city in Japan.
For its symmetry, it has become a photographer's delight. The exterior is as beautiful as the interiors. Once I bought something inside Sogo, and came out leaving my spectacles on the counter. Immediately I was followed from behind and the glasses handed back to me.

Yesterday I visited the world’s tallest statue, a huge standing Buddha 120 metres (394 ft) tall. It is located in Ushiku city, some 50 kms to the northeast of Tokyo.
Once you arrive in Ushiku station, you get on bus (500 yen, ouch!) that takes you to the statue in about 25 minutes.

The Buddha is located in a pleasant park in what seems to be a quite popular Sunday ensoku spot for people living in north Kanto. There’s a Japanese-style garden, an area for kids and of course, souvenir shops. Oh, I also saw about 8-10 people from India/Sri Lanka, I can’t tell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v153/sashimigadaisuki/P1190446.jpg
The statue itself is 100 metres tall, plus a 10 m lotus and the base, 120 in total.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v153/sashimigadaisuki/P1190442.jpg
It is really massive. Completed in 1992, it was funded and built by a company called Kawada Industries http://www.kawada.co.jp/global/index.html It weights 4,000 tons.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v153/sashimigadaisuki/P1190451.jpg
Once inside, first you’re led into a room with optic-fiber lit, colourful buddhas… not exactly what you expect to be honest :D Then, you walk to the next floor where several construction pictures are in exhibition:

From this level you take the lift to the 5th floor, which actually is about at 85 metres tall.
Unfortunately, there’s no real observatory on the top but several narrow gaps; this is the best pic I could take from it :(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v153/sashimigadaisuki/P1190462.jpg
Back at the base of the statue, on the 3rd floor there’s a golden room with 3,300 buddhas, quite impressive.

I was meaning to get out to Ushiku on my last trip, but it's kind of hard to justify a trip just to see the statue. It is really in the middle of nowhere isn't it? It's hard to get a sense of scale on the pictures since there's nothing to compare it to.

Yes it is. There're several factories just north of the statue, but nothing tall you can compare with.

I just went there two days ago. I'd post some pics up, but they're pretty much the same as yours .. but worse since its winter and all the trees are dead :P
Its certainly a nice statue. I think it was 900円 for admission.. but to be honest, I think some will lose interest in that Ushiku is kind of far from Tokyo (not too far, but not convenient), and that you gotta take a pricey bus ride too. Maybe if they had some other things around there, it would be worth it for them.. but all I saw on the bus ride to there were just farm land.

Japan's tallest building to be built in Saitama City !!
Big news has come in!
According to today's newspaper, nation's tallest skyscraper is to be built in new redevelopment area (shintoshin,新都心) in Saitama City.
The scraper is 323m high and comprised of offices, hotel, hospital and shopping mall.
The construction begins in April 2009.
I found this when searching for info on the Osaka Tower

Looks like the area has filled in since then!
A NICE COMPARISON:
From top of Landmark Tower in late 2004:
Same position, in January 2007:
Wow, what a difference! I wandered around the Minatomirai area of yokohama back in 2004 and was struck by how empty it was - so many empty lots. Something that particularly struck me as odd was that the shin-takashima station on the minatomirai-sen was surrounded by nothing, for blocks in every direction. I also found it unusual there was a toyota dealership on a surface lot sandwiched between enormous skyscrapers.
Two pictures I took then: (2/13/2004)
From the opposite side of the Negishi-sen embankment:

Tokyo International Forum
The Tokyo International Forum (東京国際フォーラム, Tōkyō Kokusai Fōramu) is an important urban landmark in Tokyo, Japan. It is used mainly as an exhibition and concert hall and conference center. One of its halls seats 5,000. In addition to seven other halls, it includes exhibition space, a lobby, restaurants, shops, and other facilities. Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly and completed in 1996, it is famous for its swooping curves of steel truss and glass; the outside is shaped like an elongated boat. Standing between Tokyo Station and Yūrakuchō Station, its address is in Marunouchi, Chiyoda.

Kawasaki
Kawasaki (川崎市, Kawasaki-shi?) is a city located in Kanagawa, Japan.
It is sandwiched between Tokyo and Yokohama to form part of Greater Tokyo, the most populous urban area in northern Kanagawa. It still exists without its own city subway system, however, the city is heavily rail based. The region where Kawasaki lies was originally part of Musashi Province, or Tokyo region (as opposed to Sagami associated with Kanagawa), as evidenced by the Nambu Line.
The city was founded on July 1, 1924 and was designated on April 1, 1972 by government ordinance.
Kawasaki occupies a belt of land stretching about 30 km along the south bank of the Tama River, which divides it from Tokyo prefecture, with the city of Yokohama immediately to the south.
The eastern end of the belt is flat, and much of it consists of heavily industrialised and densely built working-class areas, centered around JR Kawasaki Station. The reclaimed coastline of Tokyo Bay is occupied by vast heavy chemical industry complexes at the heart of the Keihin Industrial Area.
In contrast, its western suburbs occupy an area of hills known as Tama Hills and are mostly pleasant, often newly developed residential areas for people commuting to Tokyo. Shin-Yurigaoka station on the Odakyū Odawara Line serves as the regional hub of the western half of the city.
Despite its status as the 8th most populated city in Japan, it is often seen to lack an identity (and certainly a true city centre) of its own, due to the fact that it is effectively part of the huge Tokyo-Yokohama conurbation.
Kawasaki Lazona Plaza
LAZONA Kawasaki Plaza (ラゾーナ川崎プラザ, LAZONA Kawasaki Plaza?) is a Shopping mall in Saiwai-ku, Kawasaki, Japan. This mall connected by west side Kawasaki Station.

A few questions about Yokohama:
Do most Yokohamers commute to Tokyo for work or do they work in their own city?
Does the prefecture (and the Greater Tokyo Area as a whole) suffer from NIMBYism like here in the West?

Well, perhaps the good thing about Japan is that things don't have to be centralized in the nation's capital. For instance, unlike developing countries (such as the country where I'm from) where technology, development and progress is felt only in the capital or the 'main area', Japan sees that other areas get opportunities.
Things such as employment, distribution of goods and services, healthcare, education, transportation, economic development. Perhaps, to put it in a simpler way, you don't need to transfer to Tokyo (or to the Greater Tokyo Area) in order to experience progress and economic development.
I mean just look at places like Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe for proof that people there are happy. Heck, even in Okinawa, Hokkaido, Kyushu......and even Kyoto is now even on the list.
Or something like that.......

NIMBYism you got to be in the field to be using this term. Whats your firm, are you on the developer end or the lobby end of the NIMBY problem.
as for NIMBYism i think its a more of a western phenomenon where individualism and private property are enshrined in the social psyche.

All of the following data is from the 2005 national census, available at http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/stat/census/kokucho0510/hokoku/pdf/chapter10.pdf"]http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/stat/census/kokucho0510/hokoku/pdf/chapter10.pdf, p15 (only if you can read Japanese).
People living in Yokohama over the age of 15 who commute to work/school: 1,930,568
Work/commute within Yokohama: 1,201,539
Work/commute to outside of Yokohama: 729,029
Destination of commuters who live in Yokohama, but commute elsewhere:
Tokyo (23 wards): 446,000
Kawasaki City: 102,000
Central Kanagawa Prefecture: 44,000
Yokosuka / Miura: 41,000
Shonan: 36,000
Elsewhere: 59,000
Total: 729,000
Origin of commuters who commute to Yokohama, but live elsewhere:
Tokyo (23 wards): 52,000
Kawasaki City: 71,000
Central Kanagawa Prefecture: 69,000
Yokosuka / Miura: 70,000
Shonan: 61,000
Elsewhere: 70,000
Total: 393,000
Based on that, the 23 special wards of Tokyo capture 61% of people who live in Yokohama and commute outside of the city, and 23% of all commuters who live in Yokohama... Which means one in four commuters who live in Yokohama are destined for Tokyo.

High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility aims to pursue frontier science in particle physics, nuclear physics, materials science, life science and nuclear technology, using a new proton accelerator complex at the highest beam power in the world. The plan has been discussed and proposed jointly by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK (http://www.kek.jp/intra-e/index.html)) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA (http://www.jaea.go.jp/english/index.shtml)). Previously these institutions proposed the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) at KEK and the Neutron Science Project(NSP) at JAEA, respectively. The present new joint plan is based on these past proposals.
In addition, an upgrade towards 5-MW proton beam power at the few GeV energy region is proposed as a next step in the future. These accelerators will be constructed at the Tokai campus of JAEA, about 130km north-east of Tokyo.
At the 50-GeV Proton Synchrotron (PS), nuclear/particle physics experiments using kaon beams, antiproton beams, hyperon beams and primary proton beams are planned. Using kaon beams, production of strangeness in nuclear matter become possible, and the study of the influence of nuclear matter on this impurity probe of a strange particle will be performed. Experiments on kaon rare decays, such as K0 -> pi0 nu nu-bar to measure CP matrix elements, experiments on neutrino oscillation using the Super-Kamiokande as a detector, etc. will also be carried out.
The 3-GeV ring will be used as a booster synchrotron for the 50-GeV main ring. In addition, it is designed to provide beam power of 1 MW. Extensive physics programs which cover nuclear/particle physics, condensed matter physics, materials sciences and structural biology will be carried out there. Among them, the major highlights are materials sciences and structural biology using neutrons produced in proton+nucleus spallation reactions. Since a neutron has a magnetic moment but no electric charge, neutrons can be used for the study of magnetic properties of matter. Also, since the neutron has a mass which is similar to that of the hydrogen atom, neutrons can probe sensitively the location and dynamic behavior of hydrogen atoms in materials. The role of hydrogen atoms in biological cells is of particular interest in life science and, there, the neutron beams play a crucial role for these studies. In addition to neutrons, muon beams are also important in which muSR (muon spin rotation/relaxation), muon catalyzed fusion, and other materials sciences can be conducted. Also, particle physics experiments such as a muN -> eN conversion experiment can be performed. Radioactive beams produced from the 3-GeV PS are also useful to nuclear/astro physics research. Finally, the high current 600-MeV Linac will be used for R&D for the accelerator-driven nuclear transmutation.
The beam power is sufficiently high for all the above sciences. However, a higher beam power will enrich, in particular, neutron sciences. Thus, we plan to upgrade the accelerator to 5MW for spallation neutrons.

Yokohama Celebrates 150th Anniversary Of Opening Port To Foreign Ships
On July 1, 2009, Yokohama Port celebrates the 150th anniversary since its opening in 1859.
In commemoration of its anniversary, several events are planned to take place from April 28 until September 27, 2009, including an animation film show by Shunji Iwai, exhibition of works by a French art company "La Machine", theme restaurants, and a pavillion by a Yokohama-based car manufacturer Nissan.
Admission tickets are required for some of the events, and more than a million advance tickets were sold during the 1st phase of the sales period last year.

Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum April 12, 2008
The Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum (新横浜ラーメン博物館, Shin-Yokohama Rāmen Hakubutsukan) is a food amusement park located in the Shin-Yokohama district of Kohoku Ward, Yokohama, Japan. (The "u" in "Raumen", referring to ramen, is intentionally spelled that way.)
The museum is devoted to the Japanese ramen noodle soup and features a large recreation of Tokyo in the year Shōwa 33 (1958), the year instant noodles were invented. Within the museum are branches of famous ramen restaurants from Kyūshū to Hokkaidō. The current list includes Sumire, Katsumaru, Genkotsuya, Rokkakuya, Ippudou, and Komurasaki among others, but new ramen shops are being added on a regular basis. There are also large collections of ramen bowls, cooking utilities and instant-ramen packages.
The project started in 1991 with the goal of revitalizing the former boom town Shin-Yokohama. The museum opened on March 3, 1994.
In the museum patrons can make their own instant ramen to take home. There is a Nissin Cup Noodles factory where you can design the packaging, choose the ramen flavor, and pick up to four ingredients.

Yokohama Museum of Art
Yokohama Museum of Art, founded in 1989, is located in the futuristic Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama city next to the Yokohama Landmark Tower, the tallest building in Japan.
The museum has works by many influential and well-known modern artists including Constantin Brâncuşi, Paul Cézanne, Salvador Dalí, Jimmy Ernst, René Magritte, Henri Matisse, Ossip Zadkine, and Pablo Picasso. Dadaist and Surrealist works are especially well-represented.[2][3]
The museum also features work by important Japanese artists, especially those with connections to Yokohama such as Imamura Shiko, Kanzan Shimomura, and Chizuko Yoshida. Other artists whose work has appeared at the museum include Kiyoshi Hasegawa, Yasumasa Morimura and Lee Ufan.
The building which houses the Yokohama Museum of Art was designed by Kenzo Tange, the Japanese architect who won the 1987 Pritzker Prize for architecture. The structure is described as an "attractive and spacious building " that is "airy and well-lit".[2]
The museum's main hall is 18 meters tall and is open to the second and third floors. A glass ceiling allows natural light into the space. Louvers control the light levels. It has supurb acoustics, is often used for new art projects and cultural events, and is said to be a "particularly impressive" example of modern architecture.

Enoshima Island/Enoshima-jima April 13, 2008
Enoshima (江の島) is a small island, about 4 km in circumference, at the mouth of the Katase River, which flows into Sagami Bay in Japan. Part of the city of Fujisawa, it is linked to the Katase section of the same city on the mainland by a 600 meter-long bridge. Adjacent to the closest beach to Tokyo and Yokohama, the island and the nearby coast are the hub of a popular resort area.
Benzaiten, the goddess of music and entertainment, is also enshrined on the island. Enoshima is the center of Shonan, a resort area along the coast of Sagami Bay known for its scenic beauty.
The island is the scene of the Enoshima Engi, a history of the shrines on Enoshima written by the Japanese Buddhist monk Kokei in 1047 AD.
In 1880 after the 'Abolish the Buddha. Destroy Sakyamuni' policy of the new Meiji government had made the land available, much of the uplands was purchased by Samuel Cocking, a British merchant, in his Japanese wife's name. He developed a power plant and extensive botanical gardens including a very large greenhouse. Although the original greenhouse was destroyed in the 1923 earthquake, the botanical garden (now Samuel Cocking Garden) remains an attraction with over half a million visitors a year.
Enoshima is served by three railway stations: Katase-Enoshima Station on the Odakyū Enoshima Line of the Odakyu Electric Railway, Enoshima Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway and Shonan Enoshima Station on the Shonan Monorail.

Hetsu-no-miya (heh-tsu-no-me-yah) shrine
The first structures you will see after entering the torii gates is Hetsunomiya, the main shrine, sacred to Tagitsuhime-no-mikoto, and was originally founded in 1206 by Sanetomo Minamoto (1192-1219), the Third Kamakura Shogun. It consists of three structures: Haiden {high-den}, or the oratory, Heiden {hay-den}, or the hall to dedicate votive offerings to the sanctum and Honden, or the sanctum. All were rebuilt in 1657.
To the left of the shrine is the octagonal Ho-an-den, meaning a hall to install holly objects, and the structure was modeled after Yumedono of Horyuji in Nara, though much smaller in size. It is dedicated to the two famous Benten Statues: The nude Benten and the one equipped with eight arms. The nude, milk-white Benten statue measuring 54 centimeters tall is in half-cross legged posture playing the lute, whereby it is also called Myo-on (sweet tune) Benten and greatly venerated by pop musicians, kabuki players, etc. Being carved realistically to the fullest extent including woman's genitals, the shrine office is sometimes embarrassed by the request made from the influential quarters to let them take a look at it. Why unclothed? Some say because the white pigment will be stained by saline moisture if it is clothed.
The other Benten statue is nearly as tall as the Nude Benten, or 59 centimeters tall to be exact, and has eight arms, each holding something like a sword, a bow, a hoju (a peach shaped Buddhist fitting) etc. An ICA designated by the Prefecture of Kanagawa. Although it is certain that the statue was made during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), who fashioned it remains unknown. Cross-legged, it is arrayed in karaginu, or a half-length kimono which is outermost layer of the 12-layered court ensemble. In days of yore, the statue must have been richly tinted in colors. According to the literature made by Fujisawa city, the statue was carved in the late Kamakura Period, and the nude Benten statue later than that.
During the Edo Period, the statues were usually enshrined deep inside the feretory and worshipers were unable to view them face to face. The Temple exhibited them for the public only every six years, that were the Year of Snake and Boar. In those years, Enoshima was overwhelmed by crowds, and its revenues soared.
Since Benten is of Buddhist elements, the statues were almost thrown away shortly after the Meiji Imperial Restoration of 1868 under the anti-Buddhist movement. They were dumped into a corner of the hall of Nakatsu-no-miya. Local children played with them. A closer look at the Nude Benten will reveal her left hand down the elbow, the left leg down the knee and the right ankle are slightly different in tint from other part of the statue. They were missing at the time of retrieval. Unfortunately, the replaced one does not look, say connoisseurs, like the original one. The right sole, for example, should face straight upward, but it does not.
The statues here look rather like sculptures for appreciation than objects of worship. They are exhibited on a display stand, not enshrined on the altar.

Nakatsu-no-miya (nah-kah-tsu-no-me-yah) shrine
This shrine was erected by Priest En-nin in 853, dedicating to Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto. Curious though it may sound that Buddhist priest erected a Shinto shrine, amalgamation of Shinto and Buddhism was already progressing in his days. Present-day shrine was rebuilt in 1689.

@benchijade
Thanks for the sacred photos! I want to go to Enoshima too.. it is a relaxing place by the seaside.
@Vapour
Wow, thanks for beautiful and yummy photos!
You seem to have spent a great weekend!
I like Yokohama Chinatown too! It is full of energy. I'm always tempted by many delicious-looking food stalls and restaurants whenever I visit the place.. :p
A friend from HK said it looks like old HK of 30 years ago. I hear the history of Chinatown dates back to 1859, the same year when the port was opened for foreign trades. So I guess Chinese people living in the town for such a long period are somewhat Japanesized now, but they still seem to retain old Chinese traditions.
The water front area, in contrast, looks so modern and beautiful.
I cannot believe until 150 years ago it was a very small fishery port..

^^ Wow, did you go to Kawagoe? Cool!
I want to visit it soon. It's a town of old sake brewries and historical buldings,
and called 小江戸(Ko'edo) that literally means Little Edo. (Edo means old Tokyo in 19th century)

Guys, come to Kawagoe right now. Cherry blossoms here are in exactly full bloom today, which means they will be overblown within a few days. I assume many places in central Tokyo already are.

For Kawagoe-like taditional scenery, go to Kita-in (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=ja&geocode=&sll=35.917059,139.48386&sspn=0.006343,0.010171&ie=UTF8&ll=35.917503,139.488945&spn=0.006343,0.010171&z=17) and Renkei-ji (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=ja&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF-8&ll=35.919571,139.482068&spn=0.006343,0.010171&z=17) temples.

For easygoing suburban scenery (which isn't particulary original, but actually makes the vast majority of Kawagoe scenery), go to Oise-bashi Street (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=ja&geocode=&sll=35.917503,139.488945&sspn=0.006343,0.010171&ie=UTF8&ll=35.92375,139.424733&spn=0.006342,0.010171&t=h&z=17) or Kawagoe Water Park (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=ja&geocode=&sll=35.917503,139.488945&sspn=0.006343,0.010171&ie=UTF8&ll=35.912845,139.447467&spn=0.006343,0.010171&t=h&z=17).

This isn't strictly Kawagoe, but Tsurugashima Sports Park (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=ja&geocode=&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=35.922038,139.398876&spn=0.006343,0.010171&z=17) in Tsurugashima-city isn't bad either.
