allmost 3 million in 1910? Why this decline of population?

Manhattan did peak in 1910, but with 2.332 million. Bronx was'nt its own county yet, but if you do the math, this is the figure you come up with. New middle class started leaving Manhattan in the 1910's, relocating in less developed boroughs of Queens and Bronx and even Brooklyn.

Decline of Manhattan

Manhattan:
1900:1,850,000
1910:2,332,000
1920:2,284,000
1930:1,867,000

Growth of outer boroughs

Bronx
1900:201,000
1910:431,000
1920:732,000
1930:1,265,000

Queens
1900:153,000
1910:284,000
1920:469,000
1930:1,079,000

Brooklyn
1900:1,167,000
1910:1,634,000
1920:2,018,000
1930:2,560,000

Great skyline NY.

Do me a favor. Go over to the Chicago board and vote in this poll they are taking. I want some independant voices. They have this poll comparing Hegewisch vs Schaumburg. Look at the areas and make up your mind. The Chicagoans there will take any shithole neighborhood over a fairly decent suburb.

Err.. so i know a troll is someone who comes into a thread to bash and do nothing else. What do we call forumers who come into a thread and post nothing relevant about the thread, just to plug another one.

I'm sorry Uberalles but what the hell does one thing have to do with another. This is a sticky thread about Manhattan. Why on earth do you think people in the ny forum, care about suburbs in chicago, or a poll to see which suburb is better than the other? Kinda stupid don't you think?
I figured out a great name for forumers who come into threads not to discuss the thread at all but plug another, how about, uberalling?

I know I may be looking a long way into the future but do you reckon Govenors Island will ever be developed with parks apartments and offices. I think the Coast Guard and Forces have bases there but that hasn't stopped redevelopment in other cities around the world. I saw a proposal once for a suspension bridge near Battery park. A bridge or tunnel could link the Island and Brookland.

I highly doubt it.
I think Governor's island will become a public park in the future, something like Randall and Ward's Islands, although they want to build a cheap waterpark there.
Who knows, it could become like Roosevelt Island.

Kev the burninator

No, not really the right place in the forum. Try going to the general photography forum. Anyway, I would sugest getting a DSLR. Any kind of DSLR will give you the good, crisp quality that most of these photos have. Right now I'm using a Canon Rebel DSLR which is one of the lower end DSLR's but still really good quality. The Nikon D50 is basically Nikon's version of the Rebel, just in case you like Nikon more for some reason.

Hey babe! I went to chicago for a mini family reunion.. I took about 2485748572348957238957 +1 picatureeees :). I've been to chicago like at least 10 times I have 3 aunts and 1 uncle that live there. My aunt Celia was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago.. She walks alot now and lives in Belmont which is a few stops from the loop north on the red line. I decided most opf my trip I wanted to spend with her, walking and it also gives me a great oppurtunity to take pictures for the guys over in the Chicago forum. I went up the Jhc, and the Sears and also went on a mini river tour to add to my 3 day walking experience.
I'll try and post them today and swiv if it's no trouble ccan you pm me about Image Shack.. I really am retarded with these things.
Walking Chicago gave me a great Idea too. Since I am quitting smoking this week and I enjoyed photographing Chicago so much I think I will do a New York City neighborhood tour and cover the Bulk of the city each week.. so instead of Talb's ( No offense Talb, I know you work hard on your ny hoods threads) Ny hoods tour, which include real estate and google shots I would take my own and plan what hoods to take.

Too much answer for where did u go?

I didn´t, I took all the pics from the site I linked to.

But I actually do believe I read somewhere that it is possible to visit the 102nd floor now/ or will be possible soon. Correct me if I´m wrong. I´ve never understood why it is closed anyway. Does anyone know why that is?

pic shows the midtown expansion west to the hudson and the room for it.

Yeah, that pic really shows a big difference between the western part of Midtown and the eastern part. I guess it´s changing though, I wonder how the western part will look in 20 years from now. A bit more highrises I hope. Hopefully they will speed things up when it comes to "develop" the area.

Id like to point out something. This is a great example of vintage NYC/Manhattan density. There are many many peaks in the skyline. I prefer this to the flat commie blocks of Hong Kong. The difference between them is the horizontal peaks. Hong Kong has many projects where the 50 story buildings are grouped together, look the same, and are all the same flat height whereas Manhattan density has mostly brown buildings with lots of peaks.

Maybe all you Flickr fans have already seen these aerials, but I didn't see them in this thread. They take a while to load, but the second one is impressive-- and maybe the first one too.

So many wonderful pictures!

But do you know what? It's one building that surpasses every other in beauty in this city, and that is the Riverside Church! Amazing church! Fantastic that such classical beauty was built as late as in the 1920's!

:okay:

From wikipedia: "The Church was designed by the firm of Allen, Pelton and Collens. Harry C. Pelton and Charles Collens were commissioned by Rockefeller to travel across Spain and France to find inspiration for their project. They took for their model of the nave the 13th Century Gothic Cathedral of Chartres, France, and for the massive single belltower that dwarfs the rest of the church, one of the towers at Laon, but here with a base 100 feet square, and built on a steel frame the equivalent of a 22-storey building (392 feet). Inlaid on the floor is a labyrinth similar to those at Chartres and elsewhere. The church was begun in 1926 and, with delays caused by a spectacular fire in the wooden scaffolding, finished— with its first service at the main altar— October 5, 1930."

I think this is a very good picture of the facade:

I just went off-topic! Sorry guys! :bash:
Thanx again for all the great pictures! ;)
