Great shot of Big Apple! :)

The only thing missing are super tall towers....Still can't believe WTC will not be rebuilt.....These days even obscure towns like Dubai and Taipei are getting bigger towers.....It's an absurd! :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

How many miles long and width is Manhattan? I think that the city of Amsterdam can fit twice in Manhattan!

How many miles long and width is Manhattan? I think that the city of Amsterdam can fit twice in Manhattan!

According to this (http://www.newyorkhistory.info/forums/Main01/messages/433736726.html) site, Manhattan is 2.3 miles in wide.

I found more pics!

As New York City's biggest admirer in the world, I have to say that I am stunned at this pic and also that I won't ever take the fact that NYC has lost
its most omnipotent and impressive towers, the WTC

They were so huge that even when seen from the distance they still looked big, and that was something that fascinated me so much.

Now that they're definitely gone, I still feel a hole unfilled deep within my urban landscape heart...

Yes, the Malaysian guy is right: the city seen from above looks so well planned and organized, even if it appears to be strange that this city could have had any plans or strategies on its creation, since I have heard of nothing on this. Well, I may be just a bit ignorant on the subject, since it's not my city.

Thanks for the pics, hope NYC recovers its position of most tall skyscrapers-crowded city...

it will be hard to do so, Hong Kong is way ahead, and Shanghai is coming fast!!!
But NYC and Chicago will always have the advantage number/history

Not really "amazing", but two pics taken by myself when I was back home on vacation in June. Both taken from a moving car on the Whitestone bridge.

I really wished I could have taken more of the city, but I never really got the time to take my camera down there. Also my laptop breaking while I was home didn't help either. :wallbash:

Well, it's good to be back on the forums. I look foward to catching up. :)

The quality of this gallery is not quite that of the last aerials I posted, a wing tip here, an off axis shot there. And I know it's hard enough to shoot straight without a tri-pod ...much less in a small Cessna.

At any rate they're still nice views...Hopefully some different angles...If there is such a thing.

This is a French site that is dedicated to aerial images...some really good work from around the globe.
Check um' out (http://www.pilotlist.org/balades/balades.htm) :okay:

I think that the freedom tower will be better than world trade center!!!!!
more futuristic and more height!!

:ohno: :ohno:
I am sorry my friend I could NOT possibly disagree with you more, the World Trade Center twin towers were a work of art. So big, yet so simple. The Freedom Tower is shorter then both, as it is only around 1,000 to 1,100 feet to the roof.

Those views were like the ones I saw when I flew into NYC for the first time. What a great way to enter the city (unlike taking Amtrak, for one), and what an impression -- I don't think any other city could possibly match the awesomeness, except perhaps Hong Kong.

I still regret not having filmed the view, as I brought both my camcorder and camera onto the plane. The weather and visibility were perfect on that day. My plane flew along the entire N-S length of the island and turned right to spectacular views of Long Island Sound before making a complete U-turn to land.

Once I looked out the window for the first time, I just couldn't bring myself to turn away to set up my equipment...the scenery flew by so quickly, and I didn't want to miss anything. If I have another such opportunity (I last visited in August amidst a foul storm), there's no doubt I would capture it all and share the wealth...

Can we all agree that the top of the ESB offers the most spectacular view of anything, anywhere on Earth.

Absolutely stunning!!! That picture was taken when, summer 2003? Judging by the construction on the AOL Time Warner Towers, the Times Square Tower, and the lack of the appearance of the Bloomberg Tower, it must be, right? Simply awesome shot. I'm impressed.

While some cities may now have taller skyscrapers, a much overlooked fact is that New York still has bulkier ones. This phenomenon is primarily due to the larger size of Manhattan city blocks.

Each World Trade Center tower, for example, had a floor area of 4,020 sq.m.; Two International Finance Center, by contrast, only has an average floor area of 2,600 sq.m (which tapers towards the top).

Each World Trade Center tower also had a gross floor area of 4.8 million square feet. In comparison:

Taipei 101 has 4.4 million square feet.
Jin Mao has 3.0 million square feet.
Each Petronas tower has 2.3 million square feet.

To put it another way, it took over four Petronas towers to equal the sheer bulk of the two World Trade Center towers; Jin Mao only has the same amount of floor space as the shorter 55 Water Street; and the MetLife (Pan Am) building is almost as large as Hong Kong's Bank of China and The Center combined.

The photographs below are of scale models of Tokyo and Manhattan, taken at a simulated height of 1000m:

Minato Ward, Tokyo

http://www.mid-tokyo.com/03_e/img/newyorkL.jpg
Manhattan, New York

http://www.mid-tokyo.com

In summary, city skylines made up of lots of tall, thin buildings don't hold a candle to Manhattan's singular collection of massive blockbusters.

hella good
November 4th, 2004, 09:02 PM
The model of new york is crap.
wheres the GE building? why is metlife so small? and what is going on with the buildings around times square!?!

Could spend hours looking at pictures of NYC. I once heard that up and coming world cities acquire new skyscrapers like the governments of aspiring economies acquire fleets of Mercedes. I think the truth is more that every world city aspires to be just like NYC. Feedback on my website appreciated.
