Oh my, I'm sorry Nobunaga for disrespectfully answering back at you when you had nothing against me all along. I apologize to you (and to all of you guys) for being so irrational into putting any blame without thinking. :(

I hope that you would forgive me for my actions early on. I promise to delete my previous post asap.

Blackraven, my post was not directed to you at all ( I never realized you were from the Philippines until now). As mentioned -- just some unrelated tourism banners that briefly spammed the forum.

Any concretestructures above 300m (supertalls) is highly unlikely to be built in Japan.

No particular reason, but it just doesn't happen as you see.

It starts the demolish work of an existing building old pavilion in March, 2009, and
the completion in the spring of 2014 is scheduled.

Japan is a very, very earthquake prone country- that's why people are hesitant about building supertalls.

No, technology has overcome that bit. Before earthquakes, if buildings get taller than 200m, wind is more of a problem and that problem is already solved. It's all down to economics. At the current stage, ~200m box seems more economical and profitable than 300m+ supertalls and that's it. So, yeah, "no particular reason" should be reworded to "no particular technical reason".

I cannot believe that there wasn't a movement to stop the demolition of the Nagakin Capsule hotel in Ginza and the Sony Tower. Both are some of the finest examples of Japanese domestic post-war architecture.

It is events like this which make me despair for Japan. I lived in the country for several years and felt sometimes that the government works everyone so hard they are exhausted and have no time to complain about their surroundings.

Thread bump update:

It looks like Kobe is also having a mini construction boom of its own. Out of which, five upcoming projects have caught my eye and these are the ff:

1) Suma Coast Tower
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~building-pc/kobe/kobe-115suma.JPG
:cheers1:

Wow. I lived on the 8th floor of that brown building to the left behind Suma Coast Tower (on the side facing the tower!) until last year - when I left it was nothing more than a hole in the ground.

Good thing I moved when I did; my whole view of the bay would be totally cut off by now.

It should also be noted that right behind the tower there are a number of residential homes who protested a huge tower being built right in front of them. They had protest signs up and down the street when I was there.

However considering it replaces a sea of concrete parking, it's tough to decide what is worse. And of course the land costs right across from the beach and near a new station are too high to simply sell it off for houses.

From when I lived there (pics are late 2006 early 2007):

As a business district?

I would put Nakanoshima in the same district as Osaka/Umeda, but would place Higobashi/Yodoyabashi within the greater Honmachi area. They are adjacent but I think that the transportation links and the river (Edobori/Tosabori) make the separation.

It's tempting to try and draw parallels between the two but in all honesty but I don't think that Osaka and Tokyo are that similar. Tokyo is just a much larger city with many very distinct business districts that operate almost like independent cities. In Osaka the areas overlap/overflow more -- especially Umeda and Yodoyabashi/Honmachi.

Hmmm. I disagree with a lot of these. Here is my opinion (having lived in both cities).

I'd add one:

What about Dainkanyama, Nakameguro and Jiyugaoka? Or something like Aoyama? What are the areas in Osaka where the creative types live? Centrally located neighborhoods with cafés and unique shops?

In Osaka the southern neighborhood of Horie (堀江) is a gentrified area with cafes, trendy shops and restaurants, galleries, etc. Also Minami-Senba (南船場), but this area is less residential. Up north there are (to a certain extent) Fukushima (福島), Nakazakicho (中崎町), and Chayamachi (茶屋町), but these neighborhoods are still in early stages of gentrification.

Wow they really dont hang around in Japan!

This is the new Hankyu (or Hanshin) shopping store and adjacent office tower. I always get them mixed up.

I can't believe this is so far progressed already... I lived in Osaka from 2003 to early 2005 and this didn't break ground until 2007 I think.

In London the Heron Tower, which will be 242m (794ft) and the tallest building in London when complete, was approved back in 2002 and is only on the 3rd floor now!!

I can't wait to go back to Japan... hopefully I will go over in April/May this year for a couple of weeks.

Naniwasuji Underground Line gets the green light

The only problem is the deer come after you, trying to get food. They are calm usually, but suddenly become so aggressive once they notice your food.
Be careful...

Nara is really charming. It's portrayed as a mystical place in the drama 鹿男あをによし (Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Shikaotoko_Aoniyoshi)). The deer really aren't afraid of people at all. I originally watched the drama for Ayase Haruka, but was also rewarded with beautiful scenes of Nara which surprised me with its serenity and beauty.

I wish I had lived there when I lived in Osaka from 2003-2005... I'd have saved over £450 (90,000 Yen) a month in a rent if I'd stayed there... over the 15 months I would have had an extra £6,700 in the bank (~1.3 million yen)!

Knowing Japan, Osaka and the dodgiest areas of the city (Shin-Imamiya and surrounds) it really isn't that dangerous at all. Childs play compared to South Bronx, Parisian Banlieues and Hackney/Peckham in London.

Normally you cannot save money, if you live in a poor environment, spending money for something useless in reality. Where you live only deserves how it looks like. Try dressed smart in those slummy areas, I'm almost sure that the people stare and start throwing the stones at you, because you do not fit in the neighbourhoods. Can you stand that poor standard of living, appears to be a backpacker or a homeless? Probably you'd better working in a company in Minato-Ward in Tokyo, nice and clean, surrounded by the multi-national environment, than the people fussed about the things you don't normally even care of. I shall definitely be stressed out the way the ideots keep me annoyed all the time. You are more likely to spend the money for drinking or the similar ways to evaporate stress in that situation. For instance, if I stayed in a cheap guest house in Brighton, I definitely go out for clubbing every weekend or walk around the infamous stone beach and lay down, eating the fish & chips purchased from the pier for some sunbathing or playing beach volleyball with the people who can't even be bothered of bathed in the English cold and mud ocean, because it's no point living like a snob unless you live in an expensive apartment in central London, where I commuted to, Victoria station from Sloane Square paying 850 pounds per month when I worked. But normally I had time going to Covent Garden or Royal Albert Hall twice in every month or so, with the host family I lived together for 4 years, or going to France with the friends every Easter or over the Christmas. It's normally dull, staying in England all the time, desire for some holiday pack, even though I very much liked the home-made English wines and puddings in some typical sleepy small towns.

Yes, KANSAI International Airport serves international flight in KANSAI region including OSAKA.
A 3-kilometre bridge (on the right in the picture) was built to connect the island to the mainland at Rinku Town.

Article on the building height restrictions in Osaka.

Even more construction is starting in Osaka, now it looks like the Umeda Kita Yard is finally going ahead. The first plans for the area date back to 1987, it's about time I would say. Officially the heights are still 179,5 m, 175,3 m and 174,3 m for the 3 highest towers, but it looks from this drawings that they are going to be lower (according to the blog I got the drawings from), more in the 150 - 155m range.

Fall in love with Kyoto
Japan's ancient capital will capture your heart

KYOTO, Japan -- Despite unlimited opportunities to connect through social networking and text messaging, TV commercials for computer dating services suggest that romance can be surprisingly elusive for singles in 2010. But a recent visit to Japan has convinced me that Canadians may be looking for love in all the wrong places.

Even for tech-savvy Japanese teenagers, the path to love can still be a time honoured low-tech journey that starts at the ancient Jishu Shrine in Higashiyama, a district of Kyoto. Built by a shogun in 1633, the shrine has been attracting the lovelorn up through its gate ever since.

Legions of unattached Japanese make pilgrimages to the home of Okuninushi-no Mikoto -- the god of love, matchmaking and marriage.

But finding true love is not without risk, says guide Mark Amano. Visitors who appeal to the love god for help must first shut their eyes and navigate the 10-metre distance between two "love fortune-telling" stones.

Often these romantic pilgrims -- mainly teenagers and young women -- are guided on their journey by high-spirited friends shouting, "Left, right, be careful, forward, watch out, stop!"

It is said those who make it safely from stone to stone without falling or straying from the path will see their love realized.

Admission to the shrine is free but visitors can buy love amulets to help seal the deal. And when it comes to affairs of the heart, who couldn't use a little help from a higher power?

Does it work? While there are no guarantees, a notice board in front of the shrine is covered with messages from happy couples around the world -- including some from Canada -- who believe "Japan's cupid" intervened on their behalf, Amano says.

Love may be a compelling reason to make a day trip to Higashiyama but it is not the only one. Most North Americans only associate Kyoto with the international environmental agreement -- the Kyoto Protocol -- that was signed there in 1999. But long before its name became part of modern Western vocabulary, this former capital city was the heart of Japanese culture and politics.

During its 1,100-years as the seat of government, it evolved into a sprawling but beautiful metropolis, home to Imperial palaces and villas, gardens and teahouses, and some 1,300 Buddhist temples and almost 400 Shinto shrines. No less than 17 Unesco World Heritage sites are found within the Kyoto prefecture.

For tourists, that's a lot of decision making about what to do. One could fill weeks -- maybe months -- seeing nothing but temples and shrines but in Higashiyama visitors can spend a leisurely day enjoying different kinds of attractions in a pedestrian-friendly area.

Jishu Shrine is tucked right behind the commanding Kiyomizu -- or Pure Water -- temple, a World Heritage site founded in the 8th century and rebuilt in 1633. It's a must-see.

The temple's main hall, which was built entirely without nails, juts out from the hillside like a giant sun deck. The views over the city are magnificent, especially in the fall when the Japanese maples turn brilliant red, and in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.

Jumping off the verandah was once a test of bravery. It was believed those who survived the 13-metre fall would be granted their wish, Amano says, adding that many who took the challenge plunged to their death, and others were horribly crippled. The practice is now outlawed.

Right below the main hall is the Otawa waterfall, where visitors queue up to catch and drink the pure spring waters tumbling down the hillside. These are believed to have therapeutic properties and confer wisdom, health and long life, Amano says.

After the temple visit, meander along nearby Sannenzaka St. and the hodge-podge of narrow lanes that branch off of it. These cobbled streets lead past old wooden houses, shops selling traditional Japanese goods such as lacquerware and decorative paper, and excellent small restaurants, where you can get a steaming bowl of noodles and pot of green tea for under $10.

Being married, I didn't take the journey between the fortune-telling stones at Jishu shrine but I fell in love anyway -- with the colourful, beautiful pottery heaped up on tables outside shops along the rustic backstreets. I couldn't resist buying a few plates to take home. (I cursed their weight in my hand luggage but was happy I made the effort.)

On a pleasant day, the area takes on a carnival atmosphere and it's not uncommon to see women strolling about in beautifully patterned kimonos. Amano says temples and shrines sometimes offer discounts on admission to encourage people to wear traditional dress.

Sannenzaka leads downhill into Gion, Kyoto's well preserved geisha area, which in its heyday was one of Japan's largest and well-known "flower towns." Developed in the middle ages, the old quarter is still home to many ancient machiya (townhouses) and ochaya -- private "tea houses," that provide traditional entertainment. Gion is one of five flower towns in the city.

In Kyoto, geishas are called geikos and trainees are called maikos, Amano says. It is not unusual see the kimono-clad entertainers strolling around the flower towns at twilight.

At Gion Corner, tourists can learn more about geiko culture and other traditional Japanese arts -- Kyomai (Kyoto-style dance), Kado (flower arranging), Chado (tea ceremony), Koto (Japanese harp), Kyogen (comic play), Gagaku (court music) and Bunraku (puppet play). These are presented daily during a one-hour performance with English translation.

The Hyatt Regency Kyoto, a contemporary hotel with many nods to tradition, holds a maiko dinner once per week in its Touzan Restaurant. The meal -- kelp-marinated sea scallops, charcoal grilled Fukuoka beef sirloin or sea bream, green tea cheesecake and wine -- is beautifully prepared and presented.

Before and during dinner, two elegantly costumed maikos sing, dance, play traditional games and chat with guests under the watchful eye of a more experienced geiko.

Toshi Yui, an 18-year-old maiko from the Miyagawa flower town, tells our group she started her training at age 15, and hopes to become a geiko before she is 20.

But, even in 2010, being a successful geiko means more than just donning robes and wearing elaborate hairdos and makeup, Yui says. Maikos and geikos must "live the lifestyle 24/7."

That lifestyle would be quite foreign to most Canadian teenaged girls. The training is quite rigorous with days that start early with lessons and end late with performances around town. They get only one or two days off per month, and are not allowed to marry or even have cellphones. And there is no salary -- a maiko's expenses are paid and her kimonos provided but proceeds go to the house she is affiliated with.

Still, Yui says she was inspired to follow this traditional lifestyle by stories her grandfather told her when she was growing up in Osaka.

The most challenging part of the job? Coping with the elaborate hairstyle, which takes more than one hour to do and must be maintained for about a week. That means sleeping with her neck supported in such a way as to not disturb the hairdo, Yui says.

"It takes about a month until you learn to have a good nights' sleep," she says.

One of my favorite buildings in the world. That is 18 pictures and I feel I didn't cover much of it or do it much justice, though something is better than nothing! :nocrook:

In March! Remember you were posting pictures in the Miami forum and I was replying with pictures of Osaka and Tokyo? I was in Japan at that time. I went to my old roommate's wedding reception in Yokohama, and did a bit of sightseeing while I was there. I need another couple of months to finish all of the sightseeing I want to do!
