renell October 16th, 2004, 02:59 AM Another skyscraper-interested forumer! hehe.. just like me in my early days.. :D
you're lucky you can drive or walk into the sites. I can only visualise.
Edmundtanso October 16th, 2004, 03:43 AM about the old insular building, i read an article before that they have plans of building a new building there, this was before the asian crisis, so i dont know whether they are going to do it or just renovate the building....hope they renovate it though because it's a very unique building, both western and filipino design
renell October 16th, 2004, 03:52 AM yes, there were plans, and it looks serious since they moved the old mural thing in front of the building to their other building in Alabang. Though i'm not sure how a scraper would look betwee JG and Philamlife....
ryanr October 16th, 2004, 04:29 AM Now, I'm stoked about this mysterious five-star hotel. We haven't heard from Queetz yet Ryan...
You say just a tad shorter than PBComm? That's good enough for me. I'm just relieved it won't be the dull 'provincial' structures that Francis spoke about.
I just spoke to queetz. Its Westmont Bank Tower. About 37 stories, i was wrong that its taller than GT. Right now its on hold because Westmont went under. And its a bank office tower, not a hotel. My bad.
renell October 16th, 2004, 05:07 AM Westmont Bank.. hm.. i think there was one in s.com
here it is
http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=130968
ryanr October 16th, 2004, 05:16 AM Yup! thats the one
renell October 16th, 2004, 05:17 AM looks pretty narrow. i doubt they will use the same rendering though should they revive it.
i saw a fenced lot in Buendia last april. anything happening there?
Francis20 October 16th, 2004, 05:39 AM where at? is it the one beside Sommerset? there's a fenced area there as well. but that was two or one month ago.
ryanr October 16th, 2004, 05:41 AM no beside Prudential. along Ayala ave
renell October 16th, 2004, 05:43 AM where at? is it the one beside Sommerset? there's a fenced area there as well. but that was two or one month ago.
yeah. so nothing happened there?
Prudential is fenced? :? i think we're talking about one too many things at the same time:D
Francis20 October 16th, 2004, 05:55 AM area beside prudential is fenced, but that's wat we call a lot fenced forever. the basement is done, you could actually see structures sticking out, but hardly going beyond the fence's top.
the area beside Somerset Salcedo? I'll check that when i got the time. it's technically along Dela Costa St.
Power-mad October 16th, 2004, 06:41 AM I just spoke to queetz. Its Westmont Bank Tower. About 37 stories, i was wrong that its taller than GT. Right now its on hold because Westmont went under. And its a bank office tower, not a hotel. My bad.
Man, you just burst my bubble! Here I was thinking we could be seeing another grand hotel being built in Makati...
renell October 16th, 2004, 06:45 AM that's a far-off dream man, unfortunately. We already have a lot of hotels, and right now it's not a big thing to build another one. The one in Ermita was an anomaly, because it was already built, but not occupied. and the space looks too small for a grand hotel imo
ryanr October 16th, 2004, 07:01 AM Man, you just burst my bubble! Here I was thinking we could be seeing another grand hotel being built in Makati...
sorry...my bad. I really forget these kind of details:D
renell October 16th, 2004, 07:09 AM Were you thinking of that one in Rockwell? Ritz-Carlton? that one was shelved, according to old reports...:?
ryanr October 16th, 2004, 07:18 AM Its a pity Ritz-Carlton was cancelled. Would have been great to have it in Rockwell. And it looked pretty massive. Maybe they will consider building a Ritz-Carlton elsewhere once the economy improves.
renell October 16th, 2004, 07:35 AM Here's the possible lot.

Well at least it's neighbours:D
cusket October 16th, 2004, 04:06 PM I have been an avid fan of this website for sometime,---but just recently joined--Just returned from visit to Manila--quite impressed---seems cleaner than before--alot of new projects.
I stayed at the discovery suites, ortigas--and in the hotel tv channel displayed a rendering of the Gilarmi project if i'm not mistaken--perhaps discoverysuites will be involved in the project at least as a tenant, which would be great if i may add
the building depicted was quite tall.
ryanr October 16th, 2004, 04:33 PM Welcome to SSC,then!!:) Gald you like MM.
Great, you saw a rendering of the Gilarmi Project? Thats awesome. Too bad we dont have any. I really wanna see how it looks like and its actual height. Did it look nice? Lots of glass or more concrete?
How long were you in Metro Manila? And what places in MM did you visit? Did you go to Greenbelt and Roxas Boulevard (Baywalk)? And what airport terminal did you use. If it was terminal 2 (PAL) thats ok, but if it was terminal 1, it must have been awful:D Too bad terminal 3 isnt open yet.
cusket October 16th, 2004, 06:58 PM Thanx for the welcome, GreyX. I have been visiting this forum for several months now and find it to be informative--I like to learn what's going in back in Manila. From afar, I have been monitoring the construction/building scene since the late 80's and so in my mind I have good pulse on what's going on and what's not going on.
As for Gilarmi, it appeared on my tv screen for a few seconds, I knew what it is because I had read about it in this forum, but I could not tell you much except that it was quite tall and slender, but the building had character. I'll try to find out more about it, maybe I'll ask someone at Discovery Suites about it.
I was in the PHilippines for about 2 1/2 weeks, I spent about 4 days in Cebu. The first few days I stayed in New World Renaissance so I got to familiarize myself with Greenbelt and Ayala Center. Greenbelt is as advertised world class and unique. I think they incorporated the surrounding environment well. Great restaurants. Impressed with the restaurants in Greenbelt (2?)--high tech, I did not eat there but they attract a good crowd. My wife was impressed with Ayala Center-Glorietta in terms of its size. I am more of SM Megamall-type--I like the big crowds and the people from all walks of life.
I did manage to stumble upon North Park or Park Square area next to Glorietta, I was really impressed with that whole scene. I
The only think that disappointed me about makati from a skyscraper fan point of view is that the skyscrapers tend to get lost in all that density, there are alot of buildings that go unnoticed unless you walk around look behind the massive skyscrapers on Ayala. The buildings should be more spread out like Bangkok for example and this should help with the traffic congestion and pollution that becomes entrapped between the buildings.
I really enjoyed the Ortigas area, didn't have a change to explore these areas before, only now when I stayed at Discovery Suites. The building density is just fine and there are alot of interesting buildings to look at.
The most interesting thing I discovered was the new-found cafe style dining (at least I didn't discover it before) that you find in all the shopping areas, like Sm megamall, shangrila, eastwood, and greenbelt. I didn't have a change to go to Market Market or Gateway mall,
My wife really liked Eastwood city. She also like all the shopping areas and the good restaurants. Out of curiosity, we drove past the construction site for Mall of Asia, and it looks massive. My wife who is not filipino, couldn't comprehend where all the money comes from to fund all these projects.
We went to Fort Bonifacio, the buildings are nice and well designed but there seems to be something missing maybe the Market Market will help.
renell October 16th, 2004, 10:00 PM That's true about Makati's buildings, that sometimes they do get "lost" from the air, Ayala Tower One is nowhere to be seen, but it cannot be unnoticed in the ground. but note that there are small and big skylines everywhere in MM. so we can't say we don't have a spread out skyline. :)
Welcome to the Forums
Your Gilarmi update is very intruiging. thanks ;)
ryanr October 17th, 2004, 08:07 AM Well its better to have a more centralized business district like Makati or the Singapore CBD so that the traffic and pollution will be only in that area. You can easily build mass transportation leading to the CBD to improve this. If its spread out like Bangkok, the traffic and pollution is everywhere, and it will be expensive to make mass transportation that leads to everywhere.
But anyways, im glad that you and your wife liked MM as a whole. It has developed significantly over the years, and just proves that RP is not "that" poor as the media tends to show it.
Hope you can get more details of Gilarmi. It sounds great!
Francis20 October 17th, 2004, 08:37 AM Welcome to the forum @ Cusket. you nick tho sounds like casket. Just kidding!
Yeah, we thank that you and your wife liked Metro Manila. Of course every City has its downsides, but we'd better look at the better side of each. Nway, did you have any chance to take photos? Makati CBD would be very visible from Discovery Center.
And that Gilarmi project is really interesting. It's good to know that the plans are pushing thru. So Discovery has a part in it? Good! It would have sure tenants.
And its chances getting built is high. That would be something to look upon to.
Thanks for the info. Hopefully, it would not be too slim, or if so, hopefully, it would be one piece of architecture.
Power-mad October 17th, 2004, 11:02 AM @Greyx, Renell: If only one international hotel will be built in the next few years, I sure hope it'll be a Four Seasons or a Ritz-Carlton. Or a JW Marriott at least. Our people don't have to train in the Ritz-Carlton academy. Service and the aim to please is in our blood.
@Cusket: Welcome to the forums! It was interesting to note that you found Ortigas more to your liking. That's because Ortigas center, unlike Makati, has no zoning laws. It's basically to each lot build his own building. Might we say there's order and beauty in all that chaos then? :|
Francis20 October 17th, 2004, 11:22 AM There's Four Seasons Salcedo which we think, is a serviced apartment.
Power-mad October 17th, 2004, 11:31 AM There's Four Seasons Salcedo which we think, is a serviced apartment.
This is an obvious cheap attempt to ride on the Four Seasons brand equity. I wonder what FSHI will do if they here about this copy cat property?
Francis20 October 17th, 2004, 11:39 AM I dunno. But that is what it's called. Four Seasons Salcedo project. Im not sure if it has something to do the the 4 seasons hotel chain.
Power-mad October 17th, 2004, 11:53 AM I dunno. But that is what it's called. Four Seasons Salcedo project. Im not sure if it has something to do the the 4 seasons hotel chain.
The logo is very different from Four Seasons' tree logo that we have come to know. If Four Seasons were to open or manage an outlet here (or their other brand, Regent) I'm sure it'll be a big deal. This one we have in Salcedo is kinda mysterious, sneaky and weasly.
renell October 17th, 2004, 12:01 PM Yeah, not much internet advertising about it, really. we wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for Francis.

definitely this property does not belong the to fsh chain
Francis20 October 17th, 2004, 12:16 PM haha...it's hidden within these jungle of hirise residentials here in Saldeco Village. It was already on the 10+ level when I discovered this construction...with the help of the construction guys who told me what is it all about and how many floors would it have. But they don't always give accurate info. The E-services construction people told me it's gonna be a multilevel parking lot. I wonder why Ayala Land did not extend an arm to orient or educate these people, and perhaps inspire them to be a little bit dedicated on their construction work.
renell October 17th, 2004, 12:46 PM well i doubt they want to. they get the money to feed their families, i guess that motivation enough for them.
checked www.fshr.com, nothing about a serviced apartment in Makati, or anything in the Philippines.

The last we heard, Marriott is interested in constructing a JW Marriott in MM. They are currently looking for a partner (Ayala is a possibility, since it is their partner for Marriott Cebu), and a site for the 5 star hotel. I'm sure it will get built when hotel vacancies are low, and the economy improves.
Also, the Grand Hyatt proposal in BGC is not yet dead. I guess they are still in the wait-and-see mode before they start construction. It is part of the Capital Place project that will house the future stock exchange.

Wait, check that. We did already have a Regent. It's now the Heritage Hotel Manila. I remember seeing a website about the mysterious spate of hotel fires in the Philippines in 1985. I can't seem to find it now.
Turns out the Salcedo project is called Four Season Hotel. You read that right. No "S". If they were gonna rip-off the FSH brand, couldn't they do it grammatically right? Reminds me of myself when I was 4 years old singing 'Ten Little Indian Boy-SES!'
Dvorak October 19th, 2004, 01:46 AM maybe they purposely removed the 'S'.. to avoid being sued :)
thomasian October 19th, 2004, 06:51 AM ang pangit pakinggan "Four Season Hotel" hahaha.

wow... another Hyatt?!? that'd be nice. Marriott would be great as well. manila lacks big classy international hotels like them.
ang pangit pakinggan "Four Season Hotel" hahaha.
it's wrong grammar too...!! hahaha...!
Dvorak October 19th, 2004, 07:08 AM New World Hotel is a Marriott Hotel..
Francis20 October 19th, 2004, 09:02 AM oo nga. wrong grammar. hehe...let's see. it's now almost done when i checked last night. their doing the finishing touches. it's quite slim on some angles, but it looks just right.
bagel October 19th, 2004, 09:20 AM Four Season... may apat na panahon ba sa Pilipinas? At any rate, it does sound stupid. But I don't think it's grammatically incorrect. We're just talking about a difference in semantics here.
"Four Season" in "Four Season Hotel" is more of an adjective than "Four Seasons" in "Four Seasons Hotel" which is more like a proper noun. So in the prior case, "Four Season" modifies hotel, while in the latter, "Four Seasons" is not a modifier.
So in "Four Season Hotel," it means that the hotel lasts for four seasons. "Four Seasons Hotel" means that the hotel is named "Four Seasons."
Am I making sense?
Anyway, it sounds stupid at any rate.
renell October 19th, 2004, 12:58 PM huh? :D my grammatical minds isn't working at the moment.

You are making sense sir. You maybe thinking of something along the lines of Four-season (with a dash) hotel.
It's like it sounds right but wrong at the same time.
Dvorak maybe right in that they're merely trying to skirt IPR issues here.
absent-minded October 20th, 2004, 03:02 AM yaeah, yeah, yeah...!! haha...! i get what boybaha and Power-mad are trying to say... yeah... so it's a hotel of four seasons. it still does sound weird though...
Francis20 October 21st, 2004, 07:41 PM Guys, i think the 4 season/s thingy is getting hot.
lemme have some icebreaker this time...
not so fresh pics tho...but they are new:

renell October 22nd, 2004, 08:03 AM Equitable-PCI looks occupied, someone said before it wasn't.. :?
anyways can you see Shang Grand from your office?
Francis20 October 22nd, 2004, 10:50 AM i can see it from here. but the vertical blinds are always closed, so i have to go to the edge to see it completely.
Equitable Tower is occupied of course.
cropher October 22nd, 2004, 10:58 AM Is it true that both Salcedo and Legaspi villages are supposedly a housing subdivision and not part of the CBD ?
How big in hectares is Makati CBD if it does not include Salcedo and Legaspi
and if they are included how big it is then ?
pau_p1 October 22nd, 2004, 12:31 PM i think Salcedo Village and Legaspi Villages are the MCBD
renell October 22nd, 2004, 12:32 PM huh? :? Salcedo and Legaspi are mostly offices or high-rise serviced apartments and hotels... but there are housing subdivisions beside it.
they're part of the CBD, and i think they make a large percentage of it
Francis20 October 22nd, 2004, 01:15 PM hmmm...wait, salcedo village (or part of it) belongs to Bel-Air, Makati. So It's only salcedo village, that belongs to the CBD. I guess + Legaspi Village.
renell October 22nd, 2004, 01:54 PM Barangay Bel-Air perhaps... but afaik Salcedo and Legaspi are still part of CBD.
either that or im very ancient when it comes to info:D
ryanr October 22nd, 2004, 02:23 PM Yes, both Salcedo and Legaspi are part of the CBD. But i think what cropher is trying to say is that the original plans were for it to become housing subdivisions like Urdaneta village.
renell October 22nd, 2004, 03:20 PM well the name suggests it is a housing subdivision, so maybe there were. the roads look like it was built for high-end villas.
ryanr October 23rd, 2004, 03:46 AM Just like Urdaneta Village;)

I love night shots.
Did you use a tripod?
Francis20 October 23rd, 2004, 08:47 AM hmmm, no. i just placed the cam on the railings of Citibank rooftop for support. i can't get there anymore, so goodbye to those night pics.
the complete compilation of my pics are at my sig below.
bagel October 23rd, 2004, 09:46 AM Why can't you go up there anymore? Is your sekyu friend gone? Or did they finally catch onto your dastardly deeds of taking pictures from the top of a makati scraper?
Francis20 October 23rd, 2004, 12:55 PM i dunno. they've put in some restrictions. the guards changes every now and then. probably bec these guards only got 5 or 6 month contracts. so you see them, now you don't. hopefully i can get up there again next time.

cropher October 29th, 2004, 07:10 AM Wow a superb aerial photo , the portion at the bottom most ( across TESDA bldg. ) of tollway plaza of SSH with Skyway and west service road must be the widest expand of any roadlane in the Philippines all in all it has 24 lanes combined .
renell October 29th, 2004, 08:03 AM nice find ryan :okay: though the photo does seem to lose detail in the background :(
by looking at the Villamor interchange, seems like it's not very recent, maybe couple of months old
ryanr October 29th, 2004, 08:12 AM yeah...the Makati skyline is quite blurry. Nice picture anyways, taken at a good time of the day.

From far away, it really looks empty. Both Makati and Ortigas. But I don't want Manila being filled with too much highrises. It would end up like another skyline would have its own character.

rmb November 5th, 2004, 03:04 PM When is the completion of Shang grand tower? Any recent developments?
http://www.geocities.com/rmb_com/93Makati_night-shang3.jpg
thomasian November 5th, 2004, 04:45 PM But the one you labeled as Shang Grand Tower is One Legazpi Park.
Shang Grand Tower is the one with the lighted crane on the right of the picture though only a very little part of it is visible.
renell November 6th, 2004, 01:44 AM yeah, it may only be months old but the Shang has progressed a lot. that's OLP yeah.
ryanr November 6th, 2004, 02:41 AM ah...nice to see my picture again:D now with labels:lol: btw, you highlighted One Legaspi Park, not Shang;)
rmb November 6th, 2004, 08:19 AM oops i thought it was shang...it has been 10 months I've last seen the Makati Skyline...the change was quite fast...anyway, thanx for d correction. :)
Anyone knows d height of rcbc, olp and shang?
renell November 6th, 2004, 09:37 AM hehe.. i'm usually the one answering height questions :D i dunno if anyone is as intrigued and interesting like me ;)
RCBC Tower One has no official figures, but i put it at around 200-210m. OLP according to s.com is 150m, the Shang, francis and i pinpoint it to around ermm.. i think it was 170-190m
rmn November 6th, 2004, 11:35 AM area beside prudential is fenced, but that's wat we call a lot fenced forever. the basement is done, you could actually see structures sticking out, but hardly going beyond the fence's top.
the area beside Somerset Salcedo? I'll check that when i got the time. it's technically along Dela Costa St.
The Westmont Bank Tower was supposed to be developed by Sta. Lucia Realty & Development, a shareholder of the Bank, before the crisis hit.
rmn November 6th, 2004, 11:56 AM a couple of posts and observations:
1) The property where the proposed 40 + (?) storey Active Plaza Corporate Center was supposed to rise, along Buendia Ave. fronting the Classica Tower, has been taken over by PNB Asset Management. Perhaps the developers, Active Realty & Development (they also own the ACT Tower), defaulted on their loans and the project was shelved.
2) The former site of the PNB Buendia branch, which Ramon Jacinto acquired during the boom years, and where he planned to build the tallest building in city, is back under the possesion of PNB and is up for sale/lease.
3) The Gillarmi Apartments along Ayala Avenue, owned by JTKC Land (http://www.jtkc.com.ph), the company behind The Discovery Suites in Ortigas, is planning to be torn down to give way to a serviced apartment building ala Discovery. I don't know when this will push through, though.
4)The three tower Residences @ Greenbelt located in the former Ansons Arcade, will forver destroy Pasay Road (Arnaiz Ave.) in my opinion. I visited the sales office in GB3 and I tell you those buildings are too darn massive and totaly out of place. All I can say: GREED. GREED. GREED. :speech:
more later...
renell November 6th, 2004, 12:27 PM about #3, we have discussed that before. construction is said to commence later on, possibly in a year's time.
as for #1, i haven't heard of that building's name yet. but thanks for informing us
ryanr November 6th, 2004, 12:41 PM Thanks for the clarification on JTKC Land and their Gilarmi project in the future. wow, there could have been so many tall office towers if it wasnt for the crisis. Well, hopefully new ones will get built now that we are recovering.

I don't recall the details anymore (50 or so storeys???) but I do remember that a Japanese firm planned to turn part of it into a hotel. The crisis hit, and the very ambitous project never pushed through.
Oh, yeah. There is still a vacant lot between Gilarmi and the Ritz. I wonder who owns it?
mysaong03 November 9th, 2004, 10:58 AM Nov-Dec-Jan is always the best time to visit Manila, coz its the season of Xmas!!! evrybody gets excited, shoppers get frantic of excessive buying triggered by tiangges & mall discounts, while lovers & families get inspired from the city's glowing nights...specially along Ayala Avenue...
It's Christmas fever in Manila once again!!!!

that was a cool picture. i think we need a supertall in between pbcom and gt. :)
ryanr November 11th, 2004, 12:59 PM problem is, there is no space available for that. The only possible places for supertalls are left of PBcom (several lots available nearby all the way to many lots available in BGC:D)

ryanr November 20th, 2004, 03:05 AM Thanks rusty...only the 3rd one is new to me. But they are still awesome pics.
The ATO pic looks like its from a helicopter, but i cant imagine how one could go through that area at such a low altitude. So maybe its from Enterprise. Interesting view anyways.

ryanr November 21st, 2004, 09:16 AM Yes, thats because Citylands are affordable, thats why the fill up pretty fast. As for "In God We Trust", im not sure. Maybe the owner is that religious.

i read in their website that their target market is really the middle class so it has to be affordable....
actually, setting aside it's not so creative design, citiland is actually very successful i believe....cityland is sprouting everywhere all over the metro manila area....in vitocruz alone, they three adjacent towers

that's exactly what i thought earlier....i mean walang nakaharang sa cityland pasong tamo na building....so if greyX is occupying a unit facing the makati skyline....he's gotta to have a pretty unobstructed view of the skyline
ryanr November 25th, 2004, 11:49 AM No...my unit is facing Manila bay. Which is also a pretty good view. There are no residential units that face the Makati skyline as they are all office units. I took those pictures from the rooftop. My other unit, in Cityland Pasong Tamo (not Tower) faces Makati, but Cityland Pasong Tamo Tower totally covers my view!! It was nice before the tower was built.

i'm getting confuse....how many cityland pasong tamo building are there cause they bear the same name
ryanr November 25th, 2004, 12:21 PM Cityland Pasong Tamo Tower is a 34 storey building right on Pasong tamo street (now Chino Roces) and directly behind it, is Cityland Pasong Tamo which is a 14 storey condo. Cityland Pasong Tamo was built before the tower and is on Estacion St. (faces the skyway). My family owns a unit in both condos.

pau_p1 November 30th, 2004, 02:01 AM wow.. yeah those were nice shots.. and I agree with a comment the photographer has for the MM scrapers... that Makati (/MM) does have modern towers but we lack that iconic structure like the Petronas....
tyronne November 30th, 2004, 02:12 AM ...but we lack that iconic structure like the Petronas....
agree! that's why i look forward to that Lopez Center if it really will push through in the future. apart from Lopez Center, are there any other proposed scrapers that can be considered an "icon" when built?
thomasian November 30th, 2004, 02:16 AM agree! that's why i look forward to that Lopez Center if it really will push through in the future. apart from Lopez Center, are there any other proposed scrapers that can be considered an "icon" when built?
Lopez Center would really be a stand-out in the rockwell area since it's far from the next tallest bldg., PBCom.
pau_p1 November 30th, 2004, 02:45 AM well.. i hope it becomes an international icon... because I don't think an icon needs to be a high rise tower.... like for instance Taipei 101 of Taiwan which I don't is very iconic type unlike the Petronas....

that's right. i do think, too, that a building shouldn't be that tall to be an icon although height most of the time is a big factor to the overall appearance of the building. lopez center, when built, would be the tallest overpassing pbcom but will have just the right height in relation to the other skyscrapers in makati. i personally do not want to see a super tall building with the rest beside it standing not even half of its height. i also think taipei 101 is so out of place.

renell November 30th, 2004, 08:41 AM well imo we already have an international icon, with the jeepney. as for building... yeah the Lopez Centre could be one... that's a big maybe for me. though in terms with other supertalls, it will be just one among the rest

Lopez Center could be considered an icon, lets just see after it gets built. SM-KS, if completed could also be one. And who knows, we might get supertalls in BGC in the near future.

or maybe we don't need a supertall icon. the san miguel building in ortigas is an icon even if it's definitely not a supertall. :D
ryanr December 2nd, 2004, 11:41 AM Kevin...please post those pics in the Columns thread (to revive the thread:)) I posted a link to it above. Looks like tower 1 is almost completed, tower 2 is making good progress and tower 3 is starting to rise.

renell December 2nd, 2004, 11:45 AM btw it (the columns) won't be a supertall. it's only 30 storeys. no supertall yet for MM ;)
ryanr December 2nd, 2004, 12:18 PM or maybe we don't need a supertall icon. the san miguel building in ortigas is an icon even if it's definitely not a supertall. :D
maybe you are right. But not many people outside the Phlippines know about the San Miguel HQ. I think supertalls become icons because they stand out and are big engineering achievements (im not saying SMB isnt). Also, there are not many supertalls around the world, compared to "regular skyscrapers and buildings". Each supertall is unique.

I agree, Ortigas doesnt have parks and nice cityscape. It really lacks planning.
Just a random observation, but damn there are so many Honda CRVs on MM's streets. Just about all street level pictures have them:D

Power-mad December 5th, 2004, 05:55 AM what do you mean by the shoemart isn't in kansas anymore expression
Shoemart has been known for unimaginative merchandising in the retail market. SM Makati's architecture and design is clearly an attempt to reposition itself to capture a broader part of the AB market. Go to the health and beauty section and the appliances section: it's clearly a notch higher than your run-of-the-mill Shoemart outlet. It's almost like Rustan's, save for the wider array of brands.
renell December 5th, 2004, 08:25 AM Indeed. SM, in its old, dull, generic form attracted the working middle-class who needed the simple things for a simple price. That photo of it inside looks like Glorietta, with more space.
Francis20 December 5th, 2004, 08:55 AM the inside of SM Makati looks a bit better than Glorrieta. In my opinion. With more space and less complications minus those upscale stores. The main lobby looks more of an airport. I suppose it's better than Naia 2. I'd prefer to shop there over some other malls in Makati.
absent-minded December 5th, 2004, 09:29 AM I was also pleasantly surprised in the two times I got to go to SM Makati. much more modern than the older SMs. very open and bright and airy(sp?).
Power-mad December 5th, 2004, 11:43 AM I did some recon shots of Makati, as a preparation for shooting the fireworks (which are already underway) another time. You know to test some angles and composition while it wasn't too dark yet. Then I realized the test photos look good enough to post. So I'm posting them. Just because I could. ;)
(N.B. Most of the angles are kind of gasgas na so I didn't care to put captions on the photos. Why belabor the facts? And forgive me if I tagged them with letters. That is just so no one loses anybody when he posts 'the eighteenth photo looks familiar though I think I've never seen the 34th photo before.' Huh? Which one was it?)

You mean the Ayala Ave nightshots, right? Go ahead, no biggie. I must admit those pics weren't very good. I'm still not very adept with digital cameras. I've always used a manual SLR all these years. Any tips from the others here on the best settings for night shots using a digicam? If I used a twilight setting and disable the nightscope function, you think I might be on the right track? I know a tripod is essential, that I'm sure of.
Regarding the fireworks: Didn't shoot them yet. I just studied the possible angles from atop Urdaneta apartments (not the nearby Makati garden Francis, too short :) ). I plan to shoot it next weekend. I've been told it's shorter this time. 5 minutes tops.

Power-mad December 7th, 2004, 12:07 PM @ powermad - Its good that you planned out where to take fireworks pictures:) Smart thinking.
The good thing about the Ayala fireworks is they are recurring. If you didn't get good pictures, you can always go back the next day, or the next week. My biggest frustration was the Centennial celebration fireworks. My position near the CCP fountain didn't allow me to take good shots. The projectiles were very low--I only got the top part of the displays. I have learned my lesson very well.

Very cool, sobrang asensado na talaga ang SM.
Francis20 December 13th, 2004, 04:13 PM there are about 7 colors. i just dunno how long would it take for it to change colors. there's red, green, blue, hmm...lavander, cyan. errr...(now there's 5)....i forgot the other ones. ill observe again next time.
hey i got one stupid question to all observers. this has been bothering me for the past few weeks. my question is: does the floor area of LKG decrease from the lower floors up (to about the 36th floor) then increases again from the 37th beyond? i just noticed that when i changed residence...thus giving me other perspective of the nice building. 2. Is Makati sprawling or they just filling up holes by building new talls?

@renell.. thanks for that info...
and yeah SM's exterior used to change colors every few minutes.. but I guess this Christmas season, they made the light to be fixed green and red... maybe after the season, they'd again change colors every now and then...
also, that SM side that I took was the extended side of SM Makati which used to be a parking lot. Now, the whole SM Makati looks like that.. I took those night pictures on the top parking level of Park Square 1.
they used the slogan MyStore MySM after they built the SM Extension... i think, or at least since three months ago...

- Makati Shangri-la is in new colours. didn't it used to be reddish-purple kinda? oh, what does EDSA Shang look like now...?
- Makati looks amazing all bright and busy!!
- the Shang Grand Tower looks real tall already (if that's the one that's mostly blocked with a crane on top)
- I wish I could be in Manila right now...!!! hahaha!! still not feeling the Christmas season at all back here...
