I don't know what it it is but hubzilla's photo of the metro (view from the pan pacific) reminds me of ghost in the shell, a futuristic movie about robots.
Love that photo of yours hubzilla! It's really good with the mystic efects of the smog on the scrapers beyond.

MAKATA CITY? What is that supposed to mean, I hate it when they misspell city names and good gracious even Philippines is spelled as PHILIPPENES!!!

Something tells me that I believe in ncbmandy's opinion about it being done objectively.

Well.... I just don't see why they would do it in purpose. We're talking about the SSC admins and big shots here. Not some ignorant "My city rules and yours sucks" bunch of people who lurks around. but.... i dunno really.

Back to the topic. hubzilla's pics are classic. I think I asked some via email. gotta check my inbox.

Aside from the few gaps in between, I like how the skyline has almost a uniform height. I'd hate to see a skyscraper towering and dominating the skyline like that of the Petronas Towers or Taipei 101.

June 18th, 2005, 04:19 AM
From that view... I expect 2 skyscrapers which will fit in with the skyline in a couple years time: Joya Lofts and Eaton Makati, which is near Primetown Suites. OLP is nowhere to be seen and only the top of Shang Grand is visible. Thanks for the photos

awesome pictures yet again, dudz!! nice work!!

the little Rockwell cluster looks so nice from that angle! especially with the way the three scrapers are laid out and go from tallest to shortest from back to front. haha! and yeah, shang grand's trapezoid roof is just barely sticking out from that view.

umm... what are those white towers in the leftmost side of the first and third shots? I was thinking one of them was Manansala at first, but they seem to far off from the rest of Rockwell.

I wanna see GreyX's pics too! ahaha!! can't wait...!

I think that man on a horse is Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. The first president of the first Philippine Republic who also happens to be from Cavite province.

That angle shows that the Rockwell skyline will have two separate clusters once Joya Twins and The Metropolitan gets finished. Rizal Tower being the tallest on the right cluster while The Metropolitan would appear tallest on the left cluster.

thanks everyone and also for the info, thomasian. the full development of rockwell is really exciting.

@absent-minded...you're right lance, the white tower is the manansala. its distance from the other towers from that angle made it look like its outside of the rockwell area.

This sounds interesting but it's so easy to do things wrong in a project like this. I didn't know Makati had enough of a preserved "old" zone (other than the church at Guadalupe). I hope restoration doesn't turn into Disneyland kitsch.

Makati City to revisit its beginnings
First posted 00:39am (Mla time) June 26, 2005
By Tarra V. Quismundo
Inquirer News Service

MAKATI City is set to recreate its history with the planned Heritage Zone.

Located outside the urban jungle of skyscrapers and malls, the project aims to take residents and visitors back in time to learn about the city's storied past.

The project will be Makati's version of the Walled City of Intramuros in Manila. The 335-year-old city is creating a trail of historical landmarks of the old Makati in the community where it began, Barangay Poblacion.

"We would like to give pride of place to our residents. We would like to show that Makati is a city with a soul, with a rich past," said Dwayne Samarista, the Poblacion barangay official who heads the community education and information committee.

Under the plan, Makati Heritage Zone would form a historical trail within Barangay Poblacion and portions of neighboring Barangay Guadalupe Viejo, incorporating historic landmarks on the streets of J.P. Rizal and P. Burgos, part of Makati Avenue, and the Pasig River bank on Makati's side.

Oldest

"Barangay Poblacion is the city's oldest community... Makati's history is our history," said Samarista.

Makati rose along the banks of the Pasig River, in what was a marshland in the 16th century when Magellan landed in the Philippines. In the early years of Spanish colonization, Makati was a source of adobe or volcanic tuff deposits.

The Heritage Zone project aims to recreate Makati's lifestyle and architecture in the early years, said Makati Information and Community Relations Department head Joey Salgado.

Covered by the historical trail would be the Museo ng Makati on J.P. Rizal Street, the churches of Saints Peter and Paul in Barangay Poblacion, and the Nuestra Señora de Gracia in Guadalupe Viejo.

Museo ng Makati on J. P. Rizal Street, a community museum in a rebuilt stone house that used to be the town hall, has a collection of paintings and relief chronicling Makati's history and development. The museum also has replicas of documents and artifacts from centuries back, the museum administration said. Admission is free.

Another historical monument, the Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul, was built in 1620 before Makati itself was founded. It was meant to be the "centerpiece" of the rising Makati community at that time, said Samarista. Bearing architectural trademarks of colonial mission churches, the Jesuit-run parish church on a hill once dominated the Poblacion skyline.

The centuries-old stone walls of Guadalupe Viejo's Nuestra Señora de Gracia, also known as Guadalupe Ruins, mark Bernardino Street.

Samarista said the Heritage Conservation Committee, an inter-agency task force undertaking the heritage trail project, had identified five centuries-old houses within Barangay Poblacion as possible additions to the Heritage Zone.

The committee has begun a "cultural mapping" of the planned Heritage Zone. Samarista, a committee member, said data gathering could take years.

Research

"The committee is currently doing a research of tangible and intangible artifacts of history, including cultural and structural history, songs and dance, and oral history through residents themselves," said the barangay official.

"We have called on our old residents to... start remembering the past... to give us old documents, old family photos, calendars, letters, and any other relic of the past," Salgado said.

The Heritage Conservation Committee is composed of officials of the local Urban Development Department, the City Museum and Cultural Affairs Office, the Mayor's Office, barangay officers, and consultants from the United Architects of the Philippines.

The committee has also consulted officials of Taal town in Batangas, which had established its own heritage zone.

"We're looking at the best practices in other towns, to learn from their example," said Salgado.

The heritage task force, said Samarista, would also seek the help of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the National Historical Institute in accurately and faithfully recreating Makati's history.

Restoration

When actual construction begins, Salgado said old homes would be restored in accordance with a single cultural theme. Streets would be repaved to create an "old world" ambiance.

Streets that are part of the historical trail, Makati Avenue, and J.P. Rizal and P. Burgos Streets might be closed to vehicles to allow safe pedestrian access.

The Makati Heritage Zone project is part of the five-year Makati 21 Development Plan, a comprehensive economic, social and cultural prospectus drafted in 2003.

The development plan aims to boost investment, generate jobs, provide housing, and preserve Makati's heritage to make "the city relevant to the 21st century" and enable it to keep its distinction as the country's premier city, Salgado said.

With the project, the city hopes to make people aware of its deep and strong historical roots.

Having born and raised in what was known then as Culi-Culi (now known as Barangay Pio del Pilar, south of Makati), Gen. Pio del Pilar is the acknowledged official hero of Makati. A monument in his honor, facing that of Lakandula, can be found at the intersection of Paseo de Roxas and Makati Avenue. Formerly situated at the intersection of Paseo de Roxas and Ayala Avenue, Gen. Pio del Pilar's monument was moved to its present location to give way to the Ninoy Aquino shrine. There also used to have a high school in Makati bearing his name (I just don't know if it still exists at this time).

One of the few but well-known historical landmarks in Makati is the Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Church (also known as the Vicariate of St. Peter), corner of Padre Burgos Street and P.P. Roxas Street (near Makati Avenue). History has it that the Katipuneros, led by Gat. Andres Bonifacio, met inside the said Church many times during the uprising against the Spainish colonizers. It is said that there is a tunnel under it leading to the Pasig River which the Katipuneros used either to attack or retreat from the Spaniards. What is more interesting are the two huge centuries' old acacia trees standing across the Church. As if they are guarding the Church, these acacia trees have been witness to Makati's historic and colorful past.

Makati's rich religious tradition includes the 'sayaw ng mga rosas' (dance of the roses), which the Makati maidens still perform up to this time in honor of its Patroness, the Our Lady of the Rose, whose feast day falls on June 30. It is considered a devotion (panata) by the City's single ladies, who should remain single (for 7 consecutive years) while dancing the dance of the roses.

Bustero, the church you are referring to is the equally historic Nuestra Senora de Gracia parish church, which is popularly known as the Guadalupe ruins. It should be as old as the Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Church in the old Makati city proper. The seminary next to it is the Guadalupe Minor Seminary. The San Carlos Seminary is just a stone's throw away.

History tell us that, during the early days, pilgrims to Antipolo coming from Manila and nearby towns would stop by the Nuestra Senora de Gracia church to pay homage to the Virgin and to ask her intercession for their safe travel. After praying to the Virgin, the pilgrims would then descend to the nearby Pasig River to drink, then continue on with their journey to Antipolo.

I hope that the city government of Makati would be successful in this worthy endeavor. Our towns and cities should and must do their utmost to preserve their cultural heritage for the future generations of our country. The City of Manila, with Mayor Lito Atienza at its helm, has been successful in preserving Manila's historical landmarks. That should make Manilans proud of their city!

Thank you Carlo. It's a lovely church. Are the seminaries run by the same order? Actually while I like Billboards in General I wish they had a nice icon on Guadalupe ridge (instead of Caranz's mega structure) like the christ redeemer or something to mark it's history. Not many people remember it's significance and we tend to forget who we are as a people specially if we don't try to mark notable parts of our history.

Yes Sugarboy, I've participated and given my two cents on it.

I agree that there should be a place for billboards in general and their size and appearance should be controlled. I always remember the story of the giant Nadya Hutugalong billboard in Jakarta and the number of accidents it caused just because people were mesmerized by her!

I think Makati is on the right track trying to regulate it.

@mhe-ann...ayan ha, kasama paborito mong lkg, kalahati nga lang :D

Does it have the same design?

pau_p1
July 7th, 2005, 05:48 AM
yep.. I believe it will have the same design... so currently the underpasses in the CBD is on the corners of Ayala-Paseo de Roxas, Ayala-Herrera St., Ayala-Salcedo St., Ayala near the corner of Makati Ave, Paseo de Roxas-Sedeno St (beside Ayala Tower1), and the u/c underpass for Makati Ave near the corner of Ayala.

Actually they should have merge the 2 underpasses near the corner of Ayala Ave and Makati Ave....

Binay has turned Makati, the primary business district, into a stage to express his political bias. No wonder more businesses are moving out to Ortigas and Bonifacio Global City. Skyscrapers development in Makati will not thrive in the long run as business owners will certainly move to other unbias business center.

Shame on Binay

Make way for Bay City at the Centennial City. I bet all the future Manila skyscrapers will move there. Wala na, sinira ni Binay ang Makati, the last time ginawa ng stage sa coup dahil may suporta si Binay don. No wonder lumipta ng business venue ang Ayala family.

simple lang @christerdom...take a shot of a view in parts, the shots should overlap somehow, then with a panorama-making tool (most image editing softwares have this tool) you can stitch them together :)

Francis20
July 9th, 2005, 07:08 PM
yes, PET Plans Tower is near the seminary. Malapit din dun sa Philip Recto na architectural firm. This tower has an obstructed view of Makati CBD. It looks tall standing in the midst of nothing. walang tall structures nearby, but i heard that the same developer of GA Tower will soon build a condo right there. Name is Torre de EDSA or something to that effect. Or might be somewhere near Buendia. Let's see.

Hello Sir DUdz...i just have a quick question...i use the canon photo stitcher thingy. you're welcome @isagani, @christerdom and @lili. well, i'm not really an expert in making panos. marami rin akong sablay :D nway, based on my experiments mas maganda if you'll use a tripod so that the cam is parallel to the ground. then if you have an optical zoom...zoom in to the max so that the images are really square and you shouldn't pause too much in between shots otherwise there will be these pano distortions when you stitch them. maybe you can practice by making a pano of your room or house first and when you're skills improve then capture those awesome views that lifts the spirit of anyone who sees them. it's a great feeling :okay: here's a helpful site...

I am an Australian who will be coming to Manila in mid-August to work for 6 weeks. I have been told that I am apparently working in the tallest building in Manila. I would love to see a shot of what the building looks like before I go over there, so I can show it to my work colleagues.

hey there! welcome to the Philippines! :) or the Philippine forums for now...

the tallest building in Metro Manila would be PBCOM Tower (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=106171) in Makati City.

I was in the Philippine during the weeks of July 11 through July 25, and have been impressed by PBCom Tower one evening, when I saw it from the Skyway almost fully lighted - specifically its upper floors. I think that was at around 7:30-8:30 pm. It was such a great view. I believe the PBCom Tower has a high tenant occupancy rate.

yes it is almost fully occupied now. it has hi-profile tenants. Acer, Mitsubishi, HSBC, Maersk Sealand, E-Telecareto name a few. And some tenants occupy more than a floor. It seems to be the most lighted up (RCBC probably places 2nd) during that time of the night when Philamlife and Enterprise tenants are about to call it off from work.

I think that, with the demands for Grade A buildings in the Makati CBD, we should soon see these low-rise buildings being demolished to give way for tall Grade A structures. The same is true on those old, low-rise buildings on that long stretch of Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenue (Buendia Ave.) from the intersection of Ayala Avenue up to EDSA, where the City of Makati has just lifted up height restrictions of buildings on the Bel-Air side. With this recent development, the construction boom should now shift to that area of the Makati CBD. Note that Toyota Philippines has, in the past, had some plans to build a 40+storey scraper on its property in the corner of Buendia and Malugay (?) Street. The Concepcion Group, whose property is just opposite the Maya Shell Station (the said property now being owned by Philestate), should also now be thinking of pushing through with their original plans of constructing their headquarters building in the area.

OLP looks quite different from that angle. is the Columns the one that's partly cut off on the left of and behind RCBC? and is GB Parkplace the one to the left of HSBC? the Shang Grand Tower really is up there now. it's recognizable from basically any Makati shot! hehe btw, I think the panelling on the trapezoid roof is now done. all of it from Greenbelt 3's balcony thing is already complete...

No! They shouldnt demolish buildings in Legaspi and Salcedo Villages. Those buildings are classics and should not be neglected. The purpose of having low-rises with similar heights was to create a Paris looking district. If they want to build new skyscrapers, they should build them in the remaining empty lots of the Makati CBD or in BGC.

ALI Swaps Shell Maya for Fil-Estate’s North Triangle Stake
Philippine Daily Inquirer - 01/02/05

The corner lot where Shell Maya, the
gasoline station at the fork of Buendia,
Geronimo and HV de la Costa streets
stands, has been swapped by Ayala Land
in exchange for the Fil-Estate Group’s
stake in the North Triangle property. The
gasoline station is now on a month-tomonth
lease, and that its stay would last
no longer than two years given the desire
of Fil-Estate to build a mixed-use condo
complex on the property and ride the
crest of the reviving market. The area has
become a 24-hour neighborhood with the
surge in 24/7 call center offices in RCBC
Plaza and nearby buildings and in the still
upcoming purpose-built Ayala buildings in
front of the Makati Medical Center.

The reason why, for so many years now, there have been a height restriction on buildings constructed on the Bel-Air side of Buendia Avenue (from Reposo up to EDSA), was because of its (Bel-Air Village's) residents' objection on tall structures, which they said, would block, and deprive them (the residents, trees, plants, pets, etc) as a result, of enough sunlight and air (ventilation).

Demolish the dilapated buildings in Pasay and build the new Skyscrapers there instead of Makati. The Binay-run business district does not deserve development until Binay is ousted.
Plus, building a new skyscraper in Pasay adjacent to Makati (not the Bay Side) will improve the area.

Binay is such an asshole for using the city's funds to pay the rallyistas. Have you seen the stubs they distributed during the Anti-GMA rallies? Such an ass for advocating anti-corruption.

Sorry it's kinda off-topic. Well, I agree that Pasay needs a damn good face-lift. I wish more of glass/steel structures along Roxas Boulevard. The Manila Bay sunset illuminating those structures would have been dramatic!

Good News for Filipinos ... Bad News for Californians! Our Company announced that we will be moving 150 jobs from our Dental Dept, and 350 jobs from our Medical Dept. See attached memo.

Anyone has pictures of APAC in Alabang and Accenture in Makati --- to receipients of our Outsourcing. I think the jobs are already posted at Accenture Philippines website.

Date: August 5, 2005

INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM

One of WellPoint’s core values is to be customer-focused in everything we do. This is a commitment we strive to fulfill by providing programs and services that are high quality, affordable, and meet our customer’s health care needs. Managing the administrative costs associated with our health care programs is an important way to keep our products and services affordable and, therefore, remain competitive.

In an effort to improve the affordability of programs and services, WellPoint has entered into partnerships with two companies, APAC and Accenture, to handle select California work related to claims and provider calls. APAC and Accenture are companies with national and global operations. These partnerships will ensure a continued high level of quality and produce greater efficiencies.

Many of our competitors have taken similar actions within their own organizations. We must address these important business issues to maintain a competitive playing field. Because health care is an increasingly competitive environment, we must find ways to address business solutions, both inside and outside the company, that keep health care costs down while also investing in our goal to continually seek improvement in quality of care for our members.

The decision to partner with these two companies, which is subject to California’s regulatory process, will affect about 350 positions over the next 12 months in California. Because of attrition rates and temporary employees who handle some of this work, no associates will be affected in 2005 as a result of this transition. Approximately 85 associates who handle claims and provider calls could be affected during the first six months of 2006.

While these positions will transition to our business partners in Manila, other jobs are being created in California and elsewhere in the West Region. As you know, Medicare Part D has created 100 new full-time positions, including supervisory roles, to handle a wide variety of work. Associates whose jobs transfer to our partner companies can post for one of these new positions or others throughout the company.

If we are to be successful going forward we must continually find new and better ways to meet our customers’ demands for innovative, affordable products. To achieve these goals, WellPoint will continue to evaluate various types of business relationships with other companies in order to continually build a customer-responsive and efficient company. We will continue to make decisions that help us improve health and health care quality and keep health care affordable. These changes will transform how we do business, which will contribute to new growth opportunities for our business and our associates.

The vacancy level in the Makati CBD continues to

to further ease to 7%.

The stock of office space in the Makati CBD expanded by less than
1% QoQ with the completion of People Support Center adding

Still, there is a dearth of office project announcements in the CBD.
This may be due to:
The lack of available land at the fair market value.

Office rents have not yet reached the acceptable threshold to

Have no idea about APAC. As for Accenture, they have quite a lot of offices - notably at GT Tower (several floors), Makati Stock Exchange Bldg, and somewhere in Legaspi Village all in makati, Union Bank Plaza in Ortigas, and soon in Gateway Cubao, or was that Robinson's Office bldg in mandaluyon?

Of course the morale is low. However, there are a lot of opportunities within the organization --- so it is up to ourselves. What scares me is I know how good Accenture is on attracting quality people. We only moved 350 and we are a 30,000 employee organization. There is opportunity for growth in the Philippines. Somewhere down the road I will be affected but it is OK I'm moving back anyway as soon as Belagio2 is completed. I'm just glad we pick Philippines and not India or China. Hey Grey, what's that run-down building in pic 1? Makati is really improving progressively.. That's fabulous!

2nd pic looks just like the midtown area of Manhattan looking from Jersey side.. Instead of Hudson River, you have the whole 'green' area...

Here's a pic I snapped as I was walking over Paseo and just happened to have my camera with me.

Jude: Thanks for the pic. Insular Life has always been one of my favorite buildings in Makati (maybe because it's so familiar, as if it were an old friend). I'm glad to see how they upgraded it.

Hi everyone. This is my first post *applauds self*....yah, that's sad.
Anyways, I was wondering if it's OK to request pics? I'll give it a go as I'm pining for memories. You see, I was lucky enough to live in Makati for eight months! I miss it terribly. I'm desperate for a pic of The New World Renaissence from San Lorenzo Village. Preferably at night when it's lit up! Seeing as that was view I went to bed with and woke up with.
It would be really cool to see it again :)
If anyone can find (or take) a pic of that I would be so appreciative!

Thanks for the Insular Life pic Jude. It made me feel nostalgic.

Also, Alamid's picture is awesome, Amras. Thanks for that, too.

All very nice pics. I'm sure all those based abroad who haven't been back for a while appreciate looking at all the changes though others who are able to capture it through their pics.
