:bash:

^^They might as well paint it black. Or neon orange perhaps? The stature of these buildings as Neoclassical masterpieces have already fallen into the cracks.

January 5th, 2012, 02:15 PM
Whoa, I am amazed by the aerial view of Barcelona :eek::eek: Otakaw is right. Barcelona has way more organized road networks even if we contest Manila's pre-war state. Manila could have retained its historical richness and neo-classical architecture of most buildings instead. Why they paint the city hall with yellow and black? the building is beautiful but the color isn't. The color combination looks very gloomy

ploy
January 5th, 2012, 02:45 PM
We don’t have town planning, that is the problem. If you go to more develop countries everything is in order, streets, buildings, parks. There are less traffic congestion, less eyesore, less flooding, IS is outlawed.... tsk tsk tsk primitive mind.

Look what the Americans did during their time: Luneta, government office, road networks…..

JustHorace
January 5th, 2012, 02:45 PM
And if you a look at a comparison between the original neo-classical buildings of American Manila and their present reincarnations, you'd see there are obvious alterations. The old ones were more ornate.

pwede lakarin if you're into it. From quiapo church pwede ka lumakad towards quezon blvd then to avenida rizal towards mendiola, turn left til you see san sebastian church. Another way is via arlegui street. From quiapo church take the underpass and cross quezon blvd, exit arlegui. Keep walking along arlegui till you see the church, yun lang medyo nakakatakot yung lugar lalo na if you're a first timer in the area. Just blend in na lang.

Keep walking along arlegui till you see the church, yun lang medyo nakakatakot yung lugar lalo na if you're a first timer in the area. Just blend in na lang.

gaano katagal kung lalakarin. Usually kasi nilalakad ko lang from the bus terminal (phil rabbit) to Quiapo Church.

The Angela Apartments was designed and completed in 1936 by renowned Architect Fernando H. Ocampo of the fabled Manila Cathedral.

Regarded as one of the first "high-rise" buildings of the Philippines,
The Angela Apartments remain as one of the few Art Deco period architecture still standing today.

They also have a gallery of interior perspectives and the units on sale here (http://theangela.weebly.com/gallery.html).
I hope that the same foray be undertaken by developers who have appropriated historical structures, especially here in Manila.

Instead of an expensive makeover of the session hall wherein only the priviledge few(mga anak ng dyos) uses, why doesnt the city govt spend for its people, its citizens. Maybe theyre blind or they just chose to look the other way but there is an explosion of beggars, and homeless people in the city of manila. Kids with their arm stretched out and sometimes grabbing watever food they see even if it is in someone else' hand already is everywhere. And if you happened to ride a jeepney, you should not be surprise to see young kids age 5 jumping inside and asking for alms or food or water. The situation is just desperate. And lets not mention the street scene. If manila were a lady then shes a lady that hasnt taken a shower for ages with her clothes all in tatters. Im not exaggerating, I think most visitors and tourists should have notice that also. I say shame on the mayor, the vice mayor and the city council for spending meager resources of the city for its own use while neglecting the very citizen they swore to protect and serve.

I remember my experience last year. I am on my way to Divisoria from Sampaloc. They take advantage of the horrible traffic para makapanlimos sila. I believe for this particular situation, there is a part to be blame to the government for being blind to take necessary actions regarding this situation, but the bulk of the blame must be pointed to the parents of these children.

but there are more appealing waiting sheds in CBD's like in Ortigas, the Podium to ADB are examples. All they have to do is incorporate Filipino designs/materials,maintain them

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Jejomar C. Binay Thursday lauded the solar-powered city council session hall of the Manila City government and expressed the wish that he has such technology in his "palace by the seashore."

Binay in his speech, during last Tuesday's inauguration of the facility, cited the City of Manila for leading the use of renewable energy (RE) sources among local governments in the country.

OWMAYGASH bakit nakakagawa sila ng ganitong structure. Grr. Kainggit.
I strongly believe that it's not because of money. With the right mindset and the right vision plus creativity, kahit konti lang yung money, we could build such and even surpass them if we want.

Think positive! I think little by little nakikita na ng filipino public yung importance ng "good design"(you can actually see new buildings around the metro that was created by someone with an "eye for design"). I hope we reach that level of thinking na we can create something that incorporates design and art with functionality, hindi lang sa architecture, kundi sa marami pang aspects of our daily lives.

The Spaniards are one of the most artistically inclined people in the world. It's a sign of an advanced society. What more can you expect from a nation that produced the likes of Goya, Velazquez, Dali and Calatrava?

^^ Ano naman 'yong grabe kung naka-iMac sila?

Btw, the session looks nice. And they'd be now streaming the sessions live over the Internet.

Here's to "I'm just saying" part.

My point, at an average, an iMac costs 60,000 php. An ordinary PC with above average specs (actually almost the same specs with the iMac) costs about 25,000 php. See the difference? If you can cut costs, then do it. Let's face it, Manila is not really THAT wealthy, and cutting extra dineros (mas o menos 30,000++ php) and settling for a less sophisticated machine won't hurt the newly renovated session hall. :) I hope this explains my sentiments.

And BTW (I just wanna kindly request to everyone) Using the phrase "I hope" or “Sana gawin nila ‘to” and “that” shouldn't be in our systems anymore, it sounds so cliché for me now. I always see that phrase around this forum kasi (even I myself used to do that). I realize that mere hoping won't make us move. We must make a step to let them know our opinions and suggestions. There are lots of ways nowadays on how to reach our concerns to them, like their Facebook , Email, or something . Even if they don’t read it, at least we’ve done our part, and it’s their fault already if they don’t. So please lang, don’t say “I hope” anymore. OK? Hehe. Thanks! :)

Buti nalang may Makati at Fort Bonifacio pa sa Metro Manila.

Ouch that hurts coming from a promdi criticizing manila  pero tama lahat ng sinabi mo.

I mean, seriously? Is this something of an achievement for the whatsit local officials of Manila to be so proud of? Who the fudge are they fooling here? And, in their heart of hearts, do they honestly expect that Manileños will be grateful towards them for having built this semi-visually-appealing waiting shed that it even deserved three banners for its inauguration? Good thing no one dared to plaster their names in those banners. :bash::bash::bash:

Wow what an achievement!! Is that the most beautiful house for homeless people in liwasang bonifacio or what!! Amazing..

CLARK FREEPORT – The Eiffel Tower for France, the Opera House for Australia, the Statue of Liberty for the United States, the Petronas Towers for Malaysia, the Taj Majal for India. And for the Philippines, a 10-story high “balanghai”?

This, at least, is what is being pushed by the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) which has sought the help of senators and other sectors to also approve and finance a unique landmark that would identify the Philippines in the world map.

The balanghai or balangay is a wooden sailing boat used by the early, pre-Hispanic migrants to the Philippines. The name was adopted later to refer to the well-organized independent villages that Spanish colonizers later found in the country in the early 16th century.

The proposal for a landmark balanghai building surfaced anew here yesterday as the NCCA announced its hosting here the fourth “Taboan: Philippine Writers Festival, which will be held from February 9 to 11.” Taboan, a Visayan word which means marketplace, is one of the seven flagship projects under Philippine Arts Festival (PAF) of the NCCA.

In a press briefing, NCCA chair Prof. Felipe de Leon said the proposal to construct a gigantic 10-story high balanghai was voted on during a meeting held recently in Cebu amid the need for a “national symbol or identity.”

He lamented that unlike other countries, the Philippines has no landmark associated with it.

He said that during the NCCA conference in Cebu, the balanghai was voted as the most appropriate symbol for the country, winning over the rice terraces and the Philippine eagle.

“My idea is to have it constructed at the site of the Nayong Pilipino Park in Manila or the wildlife park in Quezon City,” he said, adding he would not object to the landmark being constructed in Pampanga if any local personality would finance it.

De Leon said the structure would also house a museum.

He admitted the need for funding sources for the proposal as he noted that the NCCA’s P230 million budget for this year would be adequate only for its previously lined up projects for the entire 2012.

At the same time, Dr. Juliet Mallari, head of the Taboan writer’s festival, said the event to be held here would be participated in by “the country’s poets, playwrights, essayists and fictionists from different parts of the Philippines.”

“The NCCA has been hosting the conference for the past three years in pursuit of its goal to harness the skills of today’s writers and to highlight the importance of history and culture in Philippine literature,” she said.

NCCA literary arts head Dr. Priscilla Macansantos said the festival will zero it on the promotion of literature in the vernacular, noting that English literature among Filipinos already has a niche of its own.

”Taboan will feature panel discussions, lectures, literary readings, performances and a book fair,” Mallari said.

Mallari noted that “the Philippine Arts Festival is held every February in celebration of the National Arts Month, in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 683 signed in 1991.”

Mallari said that while the literary component of the festival will be held only for three days, the entire festival would be month-long.

“It will banner the flagship projects of the seven committees of the NCCA’s Subcommission on the Arts (SCA), embracing architecture, cinema, dance, literature, music, dramatic arts and visual arts,” she said.

This year, popular television and film icons Boy Abunda and Dingdong Dantes, who were involved in last year’s festival, would be joined by Piolo Pascual as NCCA culture ambassador to further popularize the festival.

Just wondering, in your opinions.
What would it take to somewhat revive Intramuros and the whole of Manila to pre war. Or atleast to let it have the unique filipino spanish feel and architecture it had in its pre war glory centuries?
What buildings do you think should definitely be restored or renovated. What buildings should be brought back that have once been demolished? Should the burnham plan be finished? Should the government make policies about buildings in manila being build in bahay na bato style?
I imagine Intramuros and Manila city as a city with beautiful Mestizo architecture.

For me, Intramuros would be totally restored to its former self. Every building on the same ground it stood, restored in every detail without additions. So no palacio del gobernador and bayleaf etc.
Second for me would be Rizal park. I would change a lot here. First off, bring back the the beautiful name of Luneta! Then id want the burnham plan for the government center to be finished, just adding the 3 three more buildings around agrifina circle. And bring back the agrifina circle!
Also paint the existing buildings in Luneta in white and restore the buildings to pre war state which were more aesthetically and architecturally beautiful. Also make it a strip mall again, not a park. Trim those trees!
Third, id want the bay area buildings to be built with mestizo architecture without height restrictions. And restore taft ave to the time when tranvias were still riding there, with nice mestizo architecture on the sides of the road. Do the same with the roads in ermita and Malate.
Fourth, restore renovate all old buildings and ancestral homes which are historically or architecturaly important to Manila, bring back those houses that jerry acuzar restored and put them back to their old places.
Fifth, restore all the plazas in Manila with their beautiful churches as focal points and make them relevant again. Also finish burnhams plan by making the parks he wanted for public space, and the tree lined pasig river he always imagined.

Theres so many things to make Manila glorious again, like restoring the el hogar building along the pasig, giving the san sebastian church a better paint job, restoring the Met to its full glory, restoring old teatros. But i dont know much about the city, only what i have learned here. So what do you guys think? How to bring back back Manila to its former glory?

"Triumph of Science over death" Guys ito yung gusto kong bubungad sa Manila ang Obra din ni JP Rizal Astig [skull] meaningful, Iconic, World Class symbol in other interpretation at di kakuntra kuntra what do you think? Positive side Maganda ito in a larger Scale like Miss Liberty of NYC Muy Caliente Filipinos!:D:righton:

Maganda yan. Who made that statue? Sino nag disenyo? At saan sya nakatayo? If Jose Rizal designed it, then that would definitly be beautiful standing on the baseco compound. A big balanghai somewhere on the bay area? Sorry, but what the?

What i would like is a replica of the galleons that rode the Manila Acapulco line. I read somewhere that the big mighty galleons the spanish used to fair over the world seas where made mostly in Las Islas Filipinas by Filipinos. That would be nice, a big replica of a 19th century galleon, standing next to Intramuros, open for people to see. A sort of maritime museum.

Gusto ko to! Pero dapat we hire someone like Napoleon Abueva to 'reinterpret' this sculpture to a larger scale version, as far as i know, the original sculpture by rizal is really small. Also, mas maraming details ang mailalagay sa larger scale! nice idea.

Another one is make a new sculpture, like personified "Madre Filipinas"
wearing filipiñana and maybe carrying something symbolic to the Philippines like a native spear or sword while standing proud facing the sea. awesome.

Guys kung ako lang siguro may katungkulan sa Gobyerno sad but not ;) ito ang isa sa Project ko ......This statue is sculpture of JP RIZAL mismo tittle 'Triumph of Science" over death" sa ngayon nakatayo ito sa Pedro Gil UP College of Medicine campus. as I look at it could be a potential Iconic figure Statue somewhere in Manila Bay. Napaka meaningful like the Statue of liberty is originally small in the River in Paris, and now is Famed Icon of New York.

If ever na ilalagay siya sa Manila Bay Area, pwede siya sa Luneta, dun sa place where the giant Lapu-Lapu monument is standing (then put a fountain around naks), or on the location of the old Lighthouse on the Pasig River para mala-Statue of Liberty, or sa Plaza Rajah Sulayman (kaso medyo maliit yung area).

If outside our city naman, maybe sa New Nayong Filipino Entertainment City or CCP.

But (hindi naman sa pagiging naysayer), it might be criticized by, alam mo na, the extreme conservatives (because of the exposed chest of the lady sculpture) :)

Before I was thinking of making a meme of It's More Fun in the Philippines for Manila, like "It's More Fun in Manila" or something. But I thought that there are some things in our city which are "Not So Fun" -- the pollution, the garbages, the traffic, the chaos, and so on. So I thought that the national campaign "#1 For Fun" is more appropriate for our city. We must not just hope that the people seated in our government would fix all these mess. We must move by ourselves as mere hoping will not bring us into progress. Any kind of step, whether it be simple or complex, that will benefit our city and the people will bring us one step forward to the Ideal Manila we all want. May this be a movement for each one of us Manileños in order to clean the image of our city and bring back the glory Manila has been deprived of. Eventually, we could all say that "It's More Fun in Manila." So, are you with me? :)

Exactly, Imahe ng Pilipinas ang pinaguusapan. I know that it's just a suggestion but the thing is PH is a conservative Christian country na di gaya ng pagka-narrow minded na sinasabi mo, having such explicit image demonstrates nothing but mere pittance form of art and I think it's a clear imitation of the statue of liberty in NY! Your right! Eriq----Form of Art i eg.. should not be limit because of Religion, it's one way of people's expression. as I said I went to Vatican and Rome last year I saw and observed that most figures such as Statues is expressive Nudity in an Art form with the exception to Saint's and Angels where Basilica of Saint Peter is just inside Rome itself. Kahit america man yan, Japan, o kahit saang bansa man galing.

PRESS RELEASE
Manila Media Bureau
December 3 , 2011

Mayor Alfredo S. Lim yesterday called on barangay officials to take the lead in making Manila bid for the record of being the cleanest city, if not in the entire country, at least in Metro Manila.

In his speech at the inauguration of the newly-concreted Calamba Street inSampaloc stretching from Maceda to Antipolo Streets in Sampaloc, Lim cited reports saying that out of 200 most livable cities, Manila placed 128th and that in Southeast Asia, Singapore has been ranked as the cleanest.

Lim said that of the criteria cited, he is interested in the aspect of cleanliness which can only be achieved more effectively if barangay officials will actively campaign and lead their constituents toward cleanliness.

“Sa aspetong cleanliness, dun tayo pumasok. Mura lang naman ang walis- tingting. Kayang-kaya naman siguro `yan ng budget ng mga barangay,” Lim told the barangay officials present, led by chairmen Bong Marzan and Olie Policarpio, who, along with city officials headed by his chief of staff and media bureau chief Ric de Guzman, also attended the inauguration of the said street.

Lim expressed hope that through a city-wide cleanliness effort, Manila ’s ranking may improve the next time around.

Problem is the usual itenerary of a tourist coming to manila is Hotel-Luneta-Intramuros and possibly chinatown. They are all located in manila proper. The roads leading to and from those places are among the dirtiest around asia and is full of vagrants, homeless people. If only those areas are as clean as las pinas, makati cbd, ortigas center, marikina then im pretty sure a tourist will have a different impression of manila. For a foreigner the philippines is represented by manila, therefore they judge the country's image from what they see in downtown manila only.

As i observed there is a catastrophic failure of enforcement of city rules. MMDA chairman says mmda doesnt have the authority to arrest litterbugs, that authority lies with the police. So we see a lot of policemen in the streets but what are they doing exactly? They just stand there, direct traffic once in a while and most of the time sitting in their aircon patrol cars or in aircon coffee shops. For people who have been abroad kahit around progressive asian cities lang, their policemen and other enforcers strictly enforces anti jaywalking, littering, vagrancy. Any litters are quickly reported to the proper agency which will in turn responds immediately. If our policemen will only do their work properly then manila will be rid of litterbugs, jaywalkers, illegal street vendors and most importantly squatters. Ganun ang nangyari nung bago pa lang ang martial law sa atin, the PC (police constabulary) will not hesitate to arrest jaywalkers and litterbugs.

Isa sa rason sobra kasing naka focus sa usaping politikal ang mga namumuno, and this include the present and all the past admins.

Reminds me of Anti-Epal Bill. :))))"

<---- Alfredo Lim liked that comment, then deleted mine and unfriended me.

I just realized that he did not just unfriend me, he even BLOCKED me! Even my friend who liked my comment in his wall he blocked.

I mean, WHUUT?

I was just making "parinig", like an indirect criticism, that he should not make such kind of images as it is inappropriate. So he got hurt because of that simple comment? Stupid.

I really just couldn't take this one. I remained silent all these times on how this Mayor has been incompetent in improving and restoring our city to its old glory. Before I was posting some suggestions and reporting some wrongdoings in our city in his FB wall, yet he rapidly blocked me on Facebook because of posting that comment. And that certain foolish supporter-friend of his who replied, "nakakasakit ka sa atin mayor ng maynila. kung atienza ka lahat kami lim." <----- Ang tanga lang niya talaga. How pathetic.

Why do people keep on voting this kind of narrow-minded idiot, who is not open even to these small criticisms? OUR BELOVED CITY OF MANILA DESERVES A BETTER LEADER! Not this stupid old man. You're absolutely right @Hugodiekonig, he's definitely a loser. A PATHETIC LOSER.
